Planned Parenthood Hacked, Says Hacker Group

Updated 7:25pm

Confirmed.

The women's health and abortion provider said Monday it has reported the crime to the Department of Justice and the FBI.

"Extremists who oppose Planned Parenthood's mission and services have launched an attack on our information systems, and have called on the world's most sophisticated hackers to assist them in breaching our systems and threatening the privacy and safety of our staff members," said Planned Parenthood Executive Vice President Dawn Laguens Monday afternoon.

Yes, yes, hacking is a crime. Very bad. Don't do. Much punish.

And this feeds the laughable victim mentality of these genocidal vampires.

And yet . . . my sympathy meter is pinging a big fat zero. Let's see those emails.

Original Post

Pro-life hackers? Pro-life hacktivists? Tomato, tomato.

One of the hackers, who goes by the pseudonym “E,” told the Daily Dot that the cyberattack was politically motivated.

“Trying to mold an atrocious monstrosity into socially acceptable behaviors is repulsive,” said E. “Obviously what [Planned Parenthood] does is a very ominous practice. It'll be interesting to see what surfaces when [Planned Parenthood] is stripped naked and exposed to the public.”

Planned Parenthood Chief Information Officer Tom Subak told the Daily Dot on Sunday night that the organization was previously unaware of a breach in their systems.

In a statement, Planned Parenthood says it is investigating the claim.

The hacker group 3301 hasn't released any stolen data yet, but they say they got the Planned Parenthood website databases, names and email addresses of employees, and internal emails.

This part sounds like typical juvenile internet warrior bravado, but take it how you will:

The hackers say they attempted to deface Planned Parenthood's site or have it redirect to the hacker group's Twitter account. However, they were unable to accomplish this goal because, according to E, Planned Parenthood's website “backend is so terribly configured,” which thwarted their attempts to gain further administration access to the site.

Defacing someone's webpage is the internet equivalent of having your pants pulled down in a public place. Embarrassing, but fixable. I'm more interested in these internal emails, which no doubt contain plenty of juicy details.

Think about it. Put some wine in them and the Planned Parenthood people were just fine discussing crushed baby parts over foie gras and brioche toast. One can only imagine the horrible things they say to each other in the comfort of their own emails.

A couple of the broadcast nets gave Planned Parenthood's very own Cruella de Vil an opportunity to defend the organization's enthusiastic organ trafficking efforts this weekend. Mollie Hemingway recaps the ABC appearance in case you missed that horror show.

I know from direct experience that when you have them absolutely nailed with irrefutable evidence, the final fallback position is to attack the messenger.

Which means that the very fact that they are attack the people who made the video means that PP has no defense for their actions. None whatsoever.

How could they not know at the stage that "attacking the messenger" is essentially an admission of guilt on their part? Don't they know that line of defense is signaling complete back-against-the-wall desperation?

Either they had root access or they didn't. There's one file you need to edit as root to get the site to redirect somewhere else. to

"Well, it's not technically illegal under US law to sell fetal tissue, as long as you don't make any money on it."

Well who gives a fuck it's its legal or not? The whole point of these videos is that the pro abortion crowd has been lying for decades about "clumps of cells" that are totally not humans, when in fact they are delivering (then killing, or vice versa depending), then dissecting and selling premature babies.

Why aren't we talking about THAT?

Not whether or not its technically legal under federal law.

256 Eh, I think someone is just trying to cash in on the controversy.

You're normal hacktivist types don't strike me as the staunchly pro-life or pro-dignity types.

Plus PP is usually fairly paranoid and crazy security conscious. Look at the video group had to go through. And there was still a chance it failed.

Or to put it different: Back in the day I did animal research. Universities set up all sorts of stop gaps to prevent PETA infiltration. Super background checks, private email lists that cover administrative issues related to animals (so they don't have to send it to the university distro list.)

Heck, My dissertation, being on animal research will probably be excluded from the master events list. (as is common for all things animal research.)
Other universities go as far as to have fake entrances to their "facilities" (quotes because the facilities are usually actually in entirely different buildings. So less fake entrances and more fake buildings!)

The point being, I've seen crazy, and locked tight security.

And from the PP people I've had the distinct vomit inducing pleasure of dealing with, the animal researchers look sane by comparison.

The Certified ethicist would like to chime in here.

This is a complex issues because...ah you know what fuck my career prospects. I'm going to answer this one honestly:

We're all emotivists now. Via strict ethical codes (Hey there Kant!) this is probably wrong. But you know what, I'm willing to give heavy deference to actions taken in defense of life. If you're on this thread saying that PP shouldn't have been hacked, PP doesn't care. You're an "extremist who opposes their mission and services" just like the hackers. If they had their way you'd be crunched up for your organs just like the fetuses they mauled.

430 1) Don't trust. The motives as described are jumbled at best, odds are these people were looking for financial information and are doing this as a distraction or have another side motive.

2) There's no particular reason to believe the content unless it's confirmed via another source. This was a problem with the ClimateGate e-mails, which by the way;

3) The MFM will cover for anything truly damaging. If the e-mails are obscure or innocuous, they will show them and dismiss *other* charges made via witnesses or videos, if the e-mails are damaging you will only see them on conservative websites and the MFM will blame the right for the hack and refuse to discuss the contents.

ClimateGate had effectively zero effect on public climate debate, despite showing major figures engaging in data manipulation and manipulation of the peer review process.

ClimateGate also never resulted in identifying the "hackers," and as the material was responsive to an ignored FOIA request, many on the "other side" strongly suspected the "hack" was actually an "unauthorized response" to the FOIA request by someone inside the process who had access to the servers. Still probably illegal access.

IF there is truly horrifying material in the e-mail and it's corroborated, that's something. The hackers still broke a variety of laws, but that's the only scenario in which anything else might happen. *Might*.

It looks more like a Hawk Moth, what a tomato worm turns into. I also noticed that the left and right side are similar looking,, but also very different. So I binged some images of Hawk Moth, and the one that looked most like the Cicada 3301 image was called a "Death's Head" hawk moth. That's as far as I got.

You have clearly never worked in an office with HR stationed in a remote location, management training, and a policy mandated morale committee.

There are horrors like Co-worker Kudos, efficiency awards, unit meetings, safety briefings, birthday announcements, memos about what was talked about in the unit meetings, goals, quotas and cost efficiencies, fights over leave time and flex time, "vest-pocket" training, policy reminders, fights over the fridge, proper use of medical fridges, coffee clubs, parking issues, lost rings and watches, and of course, morale dinners at The Olive Garden for the junior staff.

615 I was truly enamored of the safety briefings we had in a production environment I worked at, and mind you none of use took a step out of the building except to go to the smoking area. They were about avoiding hostile animals and how to dim your headlights.
Oh, and at another point, the managers had to take time out of their days to lurk around and then surprise a worker with the canned speech: "I have been observing you work and I see that you have been working in a safe and efficient manner. This is to let you know that we appreciate you for this."

At one point, I believe there was a requirement for a small audience, and I was working an off shift, so the manager dragged me into the men's bathroom to give me this speech because he knew he could find more than 3 people there for a captive audience.

There are horrors like Co-worker
Kudos, efficiency awards, unit meetings, safety briefings, birthday
announcements, memos about what was talked about in the unit meetings,
goals, quotas and cost efficiencies, fights over leave time and flex
time, "vest-pocket" training, policy reminders, fights over the fridge,
proper use of medical fridges, coffee clubs, parking issues, lost rings
and watches, and of course, morale dinners at The Olive Garden for the
junior staff.

A similar scenario occurred to me as well: a disgruntled former employee or sysadmin who had access to one part of their system (email, intranet, or whatnot) but not the actual public facing web and database servers. Thus, the whole "hack" is smokescreen to be able to spill this sensitive stuff.

Well...we can dream, but I'm skeptical.

Unless emails do come out, being "hacked" seems to help PP more than hurt them in the PR battle.

Most of the time he does stuff that doesn't require much from him in terms of range etc. But, sometimes he steps outside the norm and be surprising in what he can do. Trouble is he gets canned usually when he does this. Looking back at his body of work, even in typecast roles he is better than he appears, superficially. I used to dismiss him. Not any more.

661 Meh, I'm of the opinion that Paul is probably the most personally likeable of the Beatles.

John came across as bitter, spiteful and abrasive.

George was just a hypocrite. On multiple occasions, he was happy to help John publicly call out Paul for things George had done himself.

And Ringo was a wife-beater. I find this especially disturbing after finding out where he got his nickname: he wears a lot of rings.

670 #672: There's a good explanation for that song.

John publicly called out Paul about his propensity for "silly love songs", calling him a sellout in his song "How Do You Sleep?". Incidentally, George, who'd made a bunch of "silly love songs" himself, including "What Is Life?", was happy to join John in this attack on Paul.

"Silly Love Songs" was Paul's response. Seems like karmic justice to me that "Silly Love Songs" was a #1 hit.

I just think George is a hypocrite for joining John in attacking Paul on that front.

Also, when the Beatles had broken up and were in the process of releasing their final album, John and Ringo asked George, who had already released his first solo album, to hector Paul into not releasing his own first solo album. After all, it might eat into sales of their last album as a group.

George tried, and Paul quite rightly told him to get bent.
