"Why Does The GOP Exist?"

Ben Domenech asks that reasonable question. Sadly, there's no reasonable answer.

After running through the GOP's recent collapses on fiscal restraint, national security and pro-life issues he concludes with the only answer possible....

Well, actually, the aim is to pass a Highway Bill. It is a thousand page tax and pork-laden monstrosity which does not deserve to pass in the first place, and whose failure would be greeted as a positive development for any fiscal conservative. For conservatives, the Highway Bill is a bad thing that could be the vehicle for something politically useful. For Republicans, this is not the case. The passage of a Planned Parenthood defunding amendment would set up a direct conflict with the White House over the issue, and undercut McConnell’s priority of passing a Highway Bill with an Ex-Im resurrection attached to it – two things that are not a priority at all for Republican voters, mind you, but for the corporatist constituency the Republican Party actually serves, are near the top of the list.

And that is why the Republican Party exists.

Again, there was a better and conservative alternative to the GOP's traditional "shower money on unions and Chamber of Commerce members" approach. But hey, what's 1.3 billion dollars more in debt so long as the donor class gets its return on investment?

I think the GOP success in 2010 is the worst thing to ever happen to conservatives. After the Bush/Hastert/Lott years the GOP had been cast out over spending, Iraq and the financial collapse. The Democrat overreach of 09-10 returned the GOP back to power before conservatives had time to sufficiently purge the GOP's ranks of the type of people who led it to disaster in the first place. Instead of arguing over the proper direction of the party (and the conservative movement) the GOP was thrust back into power.

Boehner, McConnell and their top lieutenants were just a step below the disgraced establishment figures that led the GOP to electoral disasters. They rode the "TEA party" wave back into power but they don't reflect the post 2010 mood of the conservative movement. They are as much in the pocket of the DC spending establishment as those that came before.

The conclusion the party leadership reached was 2006 and 2008 were just the normal ebb and flow of politics along with some extraordinary events. The GOP didn't see the anger at the bank bailouts and the like as the culmination of disgust with the party's leftward swing. They simply saw it as a storm they could weather before returning to business as usual.

They read the 2010 elections as a sign that their basic positions were sound and voters would once again support them without any sort of deep soul searching or course correction.

Take McConnell for example. Not only did he refuse to let conservatives offer an amendment to the highway bill to defund Planned Parenthood, he personally lobbied GOP Senators to vote for an Attorney General that is investigating the group that brought the body parts trafficking to light.

The mismatch between the energy, and yes anger, that provided the GOP with a quick return to power and their view of how the GOP and government should function is at the root of the current discontent within the party.

A new CNN/ORC Poll finds that just 30% of registered voters nationwide say they feel their views are well represented by the government in Washington, while 40% say they are not represented well at all. That figure spikes among Republican and Republican-leaning voters. Among GOP voters, 53% say they don't feel their views are well represented in Washington at all, nearly double the 27% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents who feel the same way.

That's a stunning figure considering the GOP was returned to power with record wins just 7 months ago.

Right now the only thing the GOP has to offer is "but, but Hillary." If the current Trump bubble is any indication of the real mood of many conservatives (and that's far from certain) the GOP may find its, er, trump card isn't going to work this time.

Political parties and movements need identifiable goals to attract and motivate supporters. The GOP is has been running an interesting experiment for the last 6 years or so....can a party prosper by delivering only for its elite financial supporters "victories" that are in direct conflict with the goals of a significant portion of its voting base?

So far the answer has been yes but it doesn't seem to be a sustainable business model. Time will tell.

9 I'll be happy to drop a handful of earth on the "Republican" coffin as it is lowered into the ground. The spectacle of useless oxygen-wasters scarfing up the Big Bucks has grown very, very old. There's not a single principle or shred of honor among them, from the trough-slurping pols in Congress to the mincing little Special Snowflakes like Prince Reebus.

Bury them deep, and replace them with patriotic Americans whose deeds back up their words. You don't fight traitors by sipping cocktails with them, much less actively helping them move their agenda along.

51 Given the number of candidates, I think it's possible that we'll have a convention this year.

Plank one: If the GOP wants conservative votes, there must be a clean sweep of the top Congressional positions: McConnell, Boehner, McCarthy, and the rest. I'm not talking about a vote on whether they should stay, I mean a guarantee from them that they will step down. Let's see if they are willing to put the good of the party and the country ahead of their own careers.

53 I agree with many of the points, what I don't agree with is the idea that if Democrats prevail in the coming elections, that somehow the GOP fixes itself and conservative principles are reestablished.

The truth is, leaders like McConnell or Boehner are what the GOP had for almost the entire latter half of the 20th century and they seemed perfectly content to be in the minority in Congress forever just as long as they got to dip their beak in.

The solution is to behead the leadership rather than some sort of mass sit out on future elections.

It does sound bad. It should be a DEmerit system, such as deporting the criminals when they interact with law enforcement first.

I can't believe that a big percentage of democrats like the new communist-fascist democrat party. I know a super majority of republicans don't like the republican party. I still think that a third party would be very close to the other two parties. If not what's the worst that could happen, we get shutout of legislative actions? Well we got that now. This is a zero risk proposition now. I did think differently until December 2014. Now what difference would it make? NONE.

107 I'd hate to agree with the real DrewM, but he might be on to something.
Without our time in the wilderness the GOP didn't really reorganize around any principles, conservative or otherwise. Just powerhungry people doing power hungry things.

I'm not sure what the answer is though. Clearly the voters wanted to put the breaks on the dems (which, to a point the GOP has done, we're still going down the hill, just slightly slower.)
The voters might be OK with that (that is to say, they're fine going down the hill and off the cliff, they just don't want to feel like they're doing that, so slow it down to a different pace but keep moving.)

And this is where Drew and I probably disagree. We could vote all the GOP out, reset the time in the wilderness, but by then the damage done would be to great to fix even with a party composed entirely of TrueCons. (i.e. bread and circuses would have stuck by then.) But reforming in place seems impossible too.
I'm frankly at a loss.

I despair, I despair!

No one agrees with that. At least, I haven't seen anyone.

The point is that we think the DOPe is *dead.* All you see now is the twitching of a corpse; a chicken running around without its head. However, enough people are still wed to the DOPe, that we have to knock it down and wait for the twitching to stop before we'll get enough support for a Conservative party.
Posted by: AllenG (DedicatedTenther) - Not dead yet

Well, I would respectfully disagree, I think DrewM is obviously organizing some sort of boycott of why we should never vote for another Republican candidate ever again.

I'm on board with the hating on the GOP, my frustration is finding a constructive outlet rather than just surrendering to Democrats and then hoping for the best.

I think it's a lot easier to destroy the leadership of an established political party than create a new one from scratch. Especially since we have some of the highest majorities nationwide in 100 years and these Republicans campaigned as conservatives (mostly)

The rank and file has just never really been involved with deciding leadership, but that needs to change ASAP.

But the Party is a collection of voters, it's "us". So when you say the Party has repudiated us, what you mean is the assholes temporarily in charge have ignored us. That can change, ask Eric Cantor.

We need a change in management, if you have a bad employee, you don't burn the company to the ground, you fire him.

Every political party is going to have assholes, if we rebooted and renamed it "Ultra Pure Conservative Party" there would be Boehner's and McConnells trying to get in on the action as well.

McAdams (and others), just a tiny anecdotal data bit on the state of the GOP.

Last week (I think) I was reloading and had dopey Hannity on as background noise. He was interviewing Cong. Jordan, head of the Freedom Caucus. Guy sounded smart, nice, sincere, etc. Blockhead asks him the basic question - why no results since the 2014 election? Specifically honed in on the hilarious, unspinnable example of the deferred DHS appropriation (amnesty EO thinggy), which was promptly folded on in the new session.

Jordan sort of mumbled how it was "disappointing". Blockhead (rightly) said "disappointing? are you kidding me, that was a disaster, a clear retreat, after it was THE hill they themselves designated as their new red line (or words to that effect)?". Jordan: "yeah, I know" (sort of mumbled)

Then, to make things unmistakably clear for the optimistic or slow-witted, Jordan offered as how the fact that the Ex-Im Bank had timed out without reauthorization was "something who could have imagined that? so see, there ARE some things happening!".

Head of Freedom Caucus. Smart, articulate guy, probably would be a dream as dictator given his policy preferences. But really, just barely able to mail it in when asked by a fairly simplistic radio guy what there was to hang on to for those who wanted some change of course from the freefall we're in.

Posted by: tsrblke

Un exercise politique: Go to your state Republican party site. See if they describe the process for being nominated or appointed to party positions. Do they have dates, forms, contact information? Now see what similar information they have for the candidate process.

Example: As a California Republican, youre invited to become an Associate Delegate of the California Republican Party. CRP Associates are invited to all state Republican Party conventions, receive news and updates directly from state Republican Headquarters, and are among the first to be invited to participate in campaign programs and events throughout California.

To become an Associate Delegate: A CRP Delegate must appoint you to become an Associate Delegate.

Well, certainly nothing self-perpetuating about that. And that's just Step One.

210 I'm not sure what the full, practical solution is to all this, but step one is to only elect people who promise to spend as little time in Washington as possible--maybe even write that into the party platform.

The social structure, the lifestyle that's everywhere around them, the lifestyle that awaits them if they play ball, and the local bureaucracy all view you as their enemy.

You can keep complaining about the people you send to Gomorrah becoming corrupted and, sure, a certain character of man could dodge that; but you putting a significant hurdle in front of your goals as long you keep them there.

Here's where you start: Keep them out of Gomorrah.

Loves the slight of hand telling you why we can't round up and deport all the immigrants. You know like getting of things like sanctuary cities or removing WIC cards and anchor babies and easily a list of a hundred things.

Just a reminder: it's easier to be a Democratic politician than a Republican.

A Democrat pol only needs to come up with new ways to spend other people's money. Their voters will read about it via media outlets that want them to succeed.

A Republican has to go against this prevailing narrative, knowing his voters will learn about it via media outlets that paint his efforts in the worse possible light. A Republican, if they're doing it right, has to work on a daily basis to reduce his power.

If they're not doing what we want, it's because it is not politically profitable to do so. "The way you get things done is to make it politically profitable for the wrong people to do the right thing." - Milton Friedman.

So done with the GOP. Besides, CA is now officially a non-partisan state, so party smarty.

However, did keep my voter's booklet around to remind me to check the offices and dates for 2016. They were a number of offices with only one candidate -- I think at least one office actually had none, so there's an opportunity to enter The Beast quietly on the offices people just vote on at random.

And in CA, the fees and signature requirements are reasonable for a GDI.

Actually Chamberlain stayed head of Government up to and during the first six months of the war. The beginning of WW II badly undercut his support though, and he was forced to step down after the Norway campaign went so poorly. Churchill took over just in time for the panzers to go charging across France.

After Chamberlain tendered his resignation to George VI, the King summoned Lord Halifax, Chamberlain's political crony and fellow appeaser. Fortunately for us all Halifax knew he was not the man for the job, and honestly told the King that it was Churchill's time. If we had such honesty in DC today!

I'm sure LDC's little intro to getting involved in CA GOP politics was hardly shocking to most here, who regard CA as an exotic and alien place politically (correct). But don't forget how CA has taken this idiocy to an extreme, and how the latest evolution of disenfranchisement by the judiciary has lent an assist.

With it's "jungle" primary, CA now has the possibility (more the probability in many many cases) of your local choice being twoDems. Yep, that's how bad it is.

But let's say you manage to get a statewide initiative on the ballot, let's say you even win it (against the presumed social tides). Say, Prop 8.

No problem! Faithless "constitutional" officers (attorney general), plus some venue-shopping giving you farcically corrupt and bigoted "judges", mean that the voters' votes are nullified (no "standing" at SCOTUS, if you get that far).

Leave aside that your average coastal GOPer in CA is as dim and clueless on public policy as your average NPR listener. Now the system itself forms a barricade to any sensible action, even in the anomalous cases where the brain-dead electorate reflexively votes its conscience and cultural instinct (as in Prop . Oh - and for those fans of "term limits" and other magical rules-based solutions, recall CA has had term limits on state elected offices for years.

That is pretty much impossible, do the math. The point of a third party is to veto Republican candidates who betray us, like Paul Ryan. A conservative third party could run a candidate in his district and prevent him from returning to Washington.

No more hopeless primary challenges. Yeah, getting rid of Eric Cantor was great...but the vast majority of RINO's defeated their primary challengers easily, and posing serious primary challenges takes real money.

Ultimately, the point of a third party is to retake the Republican Party.

Moving beyond that, a third-party office-holder can hold backsliders accountable by tossing monkey wrenches into their day-to-day political lives as payback when they cross us.

Right now, it's too easy for GOP to false-flag a Tea Party type without Ryan's odious track record then wring them for 2-6 years of sellout once they cross the finish line.

We need someone with a vested interest in not only implementing our agenda, but being a media and legislative thorn in the GOP's side when it inevitably breaks its deals with dissident right wingers.

313 "The GOP exists to be the "heel" in the pro wrestling show that is the US
two party system. The Dems are the "face," and the announcers are the
media.
"

Spot on. That's what we've devolved to.

One bonus of a third party is the ability to define ourselves again. Trump appeals because a) he's speaking inconvenient truths and b) he's not cowed by media dog-whistling based on GOP baggage. The GOP has accepted a great deal of unearned guilt and is dirty enough from earned guilt to have lost its credibility. Anyone running as a Republican has that albatross on their necks and I think we need to jettison that.

It's a marathon, not a sprint and we're not realistically winning the White House for a decade or more, but we need to get out from under the corruption and cowardice of the present GOP sooner than later.

314 "they prefered the reliable, old-fashioned Republican types in every
single primary. One can hardly blame the so-called establishment for
calling the shots after such a victory over the tea-party."

GOP popularity is abysmal among conservatives - who constitute over 1/3 of the Republican electorate by minimalist estimates. As for "every primary" - Dave Brat? Amash? Sasse?

Dismissive smug triumphalism aside, the establishment victories in the last few cycles have been Pyrrhic at best - burning what little political capital and credibility the party has left to cling on for one more election. They mortgaged the future and that bill's coming due.

315 The GOP exists for the same reason that there's a fake hapless basketball team that travels with the Harlem Globetrotters: controlled opposition.

Our government is now "an exhibition sport," which is the nice way of saying "rigged."

I like this. It works as well as my pro wrestling analogy.

The Dems are the Globetrotters, the GOP are the Washington Generals, and the Media are the Refs.

"Why Does The GOP Exist?"

It's a cookbook.

319 "8 The GOP will betray you.

'twas true seven years ago, 'tis true now."

That's my motto, I created on Hot Air right after the 2006 elections. Credit the True King for popularizing way back then. While all the idiots at Hot Air ridiculed me for it.

320 "The other option is the long game of working your way up the party apparatus and hoping you change it before it changes you.

Query: of the people here how many actually participate in local parties beyond primary voting? (I know I don't.)

I am retired. From the time I could vote, I caucused as a Republican [we have the caucus system here in Colorado]. Caucus elects delegates to the County Assembly. County Assembly elects delegates to Congressional District Assemblies, Legislative [Senate and House Districts] Assemblies, and the State Convention/Assembly. Each Assembly votes those on the primary ballot for their office. Primary election decides the candidates in the General. State Convention also names delegates to the National Convention.
I have been elected to State Convention, and usually to all the lower Assemblies that apply to me every time until I left Republican Party in disgust on January 2, 2013; except for twice. Once was the year I lost a son and did no politics. The other was 2010 when we were getting the TEA Party started and there were so many new people who wanted to take part that I lost election, happily, for that reason. I have run a successful presidential campaign in my county. I have been selected as a delegate to National once. I admit I have never held purely party office, because my job banned that.
Now, I am TEA Party and I have given up on "fixing" the Republican Party because having been inside it, I see that it cannot be fixed. We cannot vote our way out of this mess because there is no opposition party to vote FOR. So, if we are to keep this from becoming civil war, we need to try to form a 3rd party [or really a SECOND party]. I am pessimistic as to the odds, and as I said, I don't think we are going to vote our way out of this.
The Republican Party is the first line of defense for the Democrats; because to fight the Democrats, conservatives have to first defeat the Republicans every time. We cannot fight both of them. If we can kill the Republican party dead, dead, dead; then the Second Party has a chance to fight politically. If not, see Thomas Hobbes' 1651 book "Leviathan".

321 I heard ScottWalker.com tonight at a fundraiser. He's our guy. He'll blow the institutional wing of all political parties up. He talked about what he was for, not about what he was against. He proved he could do it in Wisconsin, and he can do it in the US.
