Cecil the lion was a beloved tourist attraction at the Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe. A hunter paid 50k to someone to help lure Cecil out of the park and then used a bow and arrow to kill him. Afterwards, he was beheaded and skinned.

Authorities are looking to press criminal charges against the hunter who has been reported to either being a Spaniard or a dentist from the USA.

Ah, I was waiting for the art thread to do a trip report.

GETTYSBURG, or My Weekend Among the Octo-Ds*

First off, thanks to whichever Moron suggested Confederate Trails dot com for booking a horseback tour of the battlefield. It's a two hour ride for not much money, they give you little radios with an earbud so everyone can clearly hear the guide, and the guides are highly educated about the war and the battle. They are paid, but are amateurs in the sense of the word which is rooted in love.

So Alex the Magnificent, All Hail Eris, and I mounted steeds and trotted off in a line of a dozen or so horses to the southern approach of the third day battlefield. Culp's, Cemetery Hill, Cemetery Ridge, the two Roundtops, and got a nice narration about both the battlefield movements and the actual facts of living that battle in uniforms made of wool blankets in July, how much feed the horses consumed, and all sorts of sundry goodness.

Also, both 'Ettes mounted daintily and no one fell off a horse.

That and the driving around was most of the Gettysburg part of the Gettysburg trip. The town itself is largely unchanged. The wheelspoke roads are in the same places. It all lends itself very well to the imagining.

This was Saturday. The frivolity commenced on Friday, when we all arrived at a state park for the purpose of staying, get this, Outside. Yes. Well, the modified version of Outside wherein tents keep the spiders at bay and air mattresses protect the Callypigian. I built a roaring fire. Eris brought champagne and cigarillos. Hilarity ensued.

Also, if I get a witness at some point today, I will claim to make a pretty damn good camp breakfast.

A new element has been added to the canon. Eris believes "The Rack" to be accurate but insufficiently specific, so she named the constituent parts "Lefty" and "Scamp". For instance, "which way should we go?" "Scampward".

And I ain't tellin' no more.

* Octo-Ds is the mathematical expression for the company of two women who sport DDs, each of whom has two thereof. So eight Ds.

Posted by: Bandersnatch at July 28, 2015 01:39 PM (JtwS4)

89 Mr. Trump, you have arrived. Now cut the bombast and act like a president.
Posted by: Soothsayer
-------------------

Unpossible. Trump may be a negotiator, but that is different than having true diplomatic/philosophical awareness/experience.

Trump is a bomb-thrower. They may be insightful bombs, they may be timely bombs, they may be welcome bombs, but they remain bombs. They have no true intellectual or philosophical substance.

Making such absolute declarations will rankle some, so I'll add that those are simply my thoughts.

It's being reported that a Minnesota dentist (Walter Palmer) was the asshole who paid $55,000 to lure the beloved Cecil the lion off his protected area and then shot him with a crossbow. Cecil was then tracked wounded for 2 days until they shot him and finished him off. They found his skinned body in the bush. So, no, it's not a friendly invite. Sincere, though.

The questioner goes after SoCon values, by claiming that they inhibit "personal choices". Fiorina uses the question to push school choice, attack Planned Parenthood, reaffirm that she's pro-life (in contrast to the questioner), and go after crony capitalism.

Nicely done, imo. Too bad more of our candidates can't seem to do this.

159 I just finished the To Kill a Mockingbird sequel, Go Set a Watchman and I quite liked it (although not as good as TKAM). The only positive review I read was from the NYT who said it ripped apart the myth of the South, created in part by TKAM, that only the white trash were racist scum but instead all southerners were racist scum. Now we see that Atticus himself is racist scum. Not the book I read. Scout, now 26, comes back from NYC to visit her dad, apparently in the mid 1950s. She finds that racial relations have deteriorated badly which Atticus, and too an extent Scout also, view as caused by a recent Supreme Court decision (never expressly stated but I suspect it's Brown v. Board of Education). Both are offended by the court's disregard of the 10th amendment (and by the NAACP) but they react differently. Atticus joins a citizens committee intended to resist federal intrusion into local affairs and Scout, while offend by the court, believes that the change should be accepted. Atticus and Scout have a big fight and eventually learn to accept each other. Atticus is definitely a racist by today's standards but he is present as a good, decent, wise, honest, and honorable man.

This book was, apparently, written in the 50s and it is interesting to look back at this depiction of southern attitudes from a perspective of 60 years. It is a moron-friendly book and I found the confrontation between Scout and Atticus to be very moving.

I thought this was relevant to the allegations of racism as reported in this thread.
