Boston To U.S. Olympic Committee: No Thanks

I don't think this is as serious as the media is reporting it. This is posturing. The committee wants Boston to hurry up and sign a host city agreement that includes a provision to pay for cost overruns (of which, there will be many, of course). The mayor has to put on a big show of pretending to care about it.

Walsh made his announcement at a hastily called news conference that coincided with Gov. Charlie Baker's meeting with the U.S. Olympic Committee.

The USOC was pressing Baker for assurances that he would back the bid, but Baker said he couldn't do it until he saw a detailed report about the games from a consulting group. That report isn't expected until next month.

Olympic bids need strong support from key city leaders. The USOC board was meeting later Monday to discuss the future of the bid. Baker's recalcitrance, combined with an about-face from a previously supportive Walsh, gives the board an opening to pull the plug on Boston, where public support has lagged.

The deadline for nominating a U.S. city is September 15, but the committee is eager to get an agreement now. Los Angeles is waiting in the wings.

Andy tells me "the idea of hosting the Olympics is about as popular as the clap up here in Boston. We've seen this movie before." Like this junk-punch op-ed.

When this idea was broached before, they were using a pretty broad definition of Boston. They were looking at not just the greater metro area but even considering facilities as far away as Foxboro.

It would be a nightmare though. Boston doesn't need all that extra traffic. The student invasion causes enough problems. And then there's the small problem of it always costing a hell of a lot more than predicted.

My first (and only) thought at seeing this headline was opening ceremonies similar to the orwellian (wowza talk about prescient) stuff at the London Olympics. Especially the Nat. Health Service stuff. My gawd.

OK, so two centuries ago, Boston had some association with freedom. Well, in the run-up to the Late Unpleasantness, as well.

Actually, Boston could help hold down the costs of the ceremonies by just slightly repackaging some of the London crap. Equally fitting for America's birthplace/mass grave of freedom and ordered liberty, in many cases.

1984

The "profit" also needs to be compared against opportunity cost. Usually the taxpayers pay for the improvement of infrastructure at a higher rate than just paying for an actual improvement of infrastructure without the Olympics.

Of course, in the days when people got excited about the Olympics coming to town, you could use that as motivation to get the dumb sucker taxpayers to cough up the taxes.

One thing people don't take into account, if you're a tourist city already, the Olympics keep tourists *out*.

The regular tourist trade knows to avoid the city and the expense of hotel rooms, etc. at that time.

109 I am pro-Olympics in Boston, and would spend a couple weeks up there if they were held. From the first second it was announced, the cries of life-altering traffic, corruption, etc. started, and there was no way to get anyone to listen. The pols did it to themselves with all of their past failures, but the people are the ones who get screwed. The Olympics would be a blast in Boston. Yes, it would be a HUGE undertaking, and there would be hiccups, but it wouldn't necessarily have been a total disaster. I intend to go to the next Olympics in the US, so I guess I'm on Team L.A. now. The next 3 are in Rio de Janeiro, Pyeongchang and Tokyo, so it's going to be a while.
I think that a better idea than a Boston Summer Olympics would have been a New England Region Winter Olympics. Figure skating, hockey, etc. in the City, skiing/snowboarding, etc. In NH, VT and Maine. Spreading out an Olympics has been done before, they're not confined to City Limits.

111 Boston could host the olympics without doing much. You have an airport, several large outdoor stadiums, several indoor stadiums, tons of hotel rooms, lots of college dorm rooms that could be used to house athletes, etc.

The reason Olympics go knee deep in debt is because they build all this shit that is never used again. Boston - and pretty much every big American city - already has everything needed. If done right it could be nicely profitable.

That's the point. Getting the Olympics isn't about getting the Olympics; it's about getting all those sweet construction jobs for fat unions while fleecing the locals for every thin dime. It doesn't MATTER that there are existing facilities; they'll claim that they have to be "updated" or "modernized." They'll claim all the roads have to be torn up and repaved in preparation for the increased traffic. They'll claim that Logan needs a full overhaul to make it shiny as a new minted coin for all the international visitors the Olympics will draw.
Boston would end up in a hole deeper than they got with the Big Dig.

I'm a fan of removing any sport that has subjective judging criteria. If "artistic merit" is any part of your judging, it should not be an olympic sport.

Which is not to say that those people are not athletes and don't deserve some world-stage event. It is simply to say that I don't believe they belong in the Olympics.

The region is packed with all sorts of arenas, Universities, minor league venues. Most events don't need a Fenway Park or Foxborough Stadium. As to excess events, they often add events particularly well-suited to the host country's best Sports. For Rio, I read ( a while ago, will have to look up) they added a handful of windsurfing events, with a bunch of different "Classes", to pad their medal count.

Sure, I get that. However, like the news, the sports people are hard left. They avoid the combat-like sports out of ideology, not viewership.

One of the worst examples is over several winter Olympics the effusive coverage they gave to that male speedskater, Dan something, whose sister died before his Olympics premier. It was heartbreaking, however, the guy had a habit of choking and/or falling. Meanwhile, there was a female speedskater at the same time who was on freakin' fire - winning and placing in every race she competed. And then guess which one now does color commentary for NBC?

272 Can anybody sign? I've never played fantasy football before, so I'd be a sure cellar dweller.

--I've broached expansion to the commish (CDR M); it's either his call or he'll put it to a vote. We also would open it up if one or both of the other teams don't re-up. Personally, I think 12 is the ideal size for a league and we had 10 last season. I liked the first round bye for the top two teams though.

As for being a newb, well, sometimes dumb luck can help in fantasy, and can keep you from paralysis by analysis. Hell, I won my playoff games with Jay Cutler and Dirty Sanchez (!).

273 @263 I think it's hilarious that one of the money saving measures Romney took was to kill all the lavish parties they were throwing, and turn them into pizza parties.

The look on their faces when those people learned their fancy parties were now like a ten year old's birthday must have been amazing.

So what you're saying is that Boston can guarantee it won't land the Olympics by promising to bring in Romney to manage the whole thing?

274 At firstonly loosely associated with the SLC Olympics. Successful Mormon businessman, he lent support/lobbied for them. But then a whole crew of shitbags from the USOC, from Utah, from all over made a huge fucking mess of obvious corruption and incompetence to the point that Romney pretty much had to take over. At the time, I followed the story closely, but the details are fuzzy.

Oh, and for Rio they did away with windsurfing, replaced it with kite surfing, a local specialty.

276 I would think Bostonians were naturally miffed because of too many Kennedys.

I think that's a safe bet.

Wow, my hero!!

I'm interested in submitting an application. Does the draft involve alcohol?

--Are you in the Yahoo group? You can reach CDR M through that, and it's a Yahoo league.

As for booze, it depends on the timing. I drank last year because it was over Labor Day Weekend.

I always laugh when people say this. Oh no
traffic for 2 weeks will be extremely shitty instead of just shitty!!
That's about the dumbest reason not to have an event in your city.
Besides it's summer, traffic is always less awful in summer since at any
gives time 20% of the population is on vacation and 100% of kids are
driven to and from school.

Gee, you think maybe a lot of people go to vacation IN BOSTON?
And yeah, I'm going to bitch about the traffic. And I'm going to bitch about the inherent cronyism and corruption inherent with winning an Olympic bid. Because I'm not an idiot.

281 GOPe really are a bunch of no good, big spending, tax payer raping, big government cocksuckers, aren't they?

282 oops. wrong article. they still are though.

Posted by: eureka! at July 27, 2015 03:34 PM (g1MTt)

283 The Olympics are as old and tired as that sad old Massachusetts method of local governing called "Town Meeting". Begone with it I say, we'll all be better off.

284 The Olympics ate the economic kiss of death for whatever city gets stuck with it. An ancient Greek albatross, rotting around the staid burghers' necks...

285 If Denver could say 'No', why not Boston?

Denver saying 'No' is why '76 Winter games were at Innsbruck, and Denver said 'No' after being awarded the games. More here http://www.coloradodaily.com/ci_13116680
