Because it seems to me that Democrats spent years claiming that there ware millions of uninsured people who were going to DIE all over our sidewalks if the taxpayers didn't cough up the cash to build these Obamacare exchanges. Was that not true? Read the whole piece because it covers all the tropes of failed liberal policy. 1. The entire policy started from a false premise."The viability of state health insurance exchanges has been a challenge across the country, particularly in small states, due to insufficient numbers of uninsured residents," said a statement from the office of Hawaii Democratic Gov. David Ige, announcing last month that his state's sign-ups were being turned over to the federal government.It turns out that the very expensive solution of upending the nation's healthcare systems to serve relatively few people is not a good plan. Go figure. 2. Magical thinking.
Twelve states and the District of Columbia fully control their markets. Experts estimate about half face financial difficulties. Federal taxpayers invested nearly $5 billion in startup grants to the states, expecting that state markets would become self-sustaining. Most of the federal money has been spent, and states have to face the consequences.Self-sustaining? How was "more services" and "fewer costs" ever going to be self-sustaining? It was magical thinking, as Vermont discovered:
In Vermont, a debate has been raging about whether to abandon the state exchange. Democratic Gov. Peter Shumlin originally wanted a single state-run system for all residents, along the lines of Canada. Shumlin backed off because it would have meant prohibitively high taxes.3. The solution must be kept secret. The Obama administration's annual conference with state exchange directors will focus on sustainability, they say. They also say the two-day meeting will be closed to the media. 4. Misuse of taxpayer money. The feds are investigating exchanges or exchange officials in Massachusetts, Maryland, and Oregon for misdeeds ranging from misuse of millions in federal funds to outright fraud. Who could not have seen this coming?

Democrats lied and disguised the issue confusing it with the fact that catching many diseases earlier tends to save for *that individual patient* (that is not considering the costs of screening, false positives, etc. across a population. Also that doesn't apply to all diseases, just a set of them.)
I had conversations with people where I tried to explain this, to no avail. But climate science is settled or something.

Medicaid. Hmm, failure (to improve medical outcomes). Preventive care, failure (thanks tslrbike). HeadStart, failure (to improve outcomes). On, and on, and on. Almost all large-scale interventions like this, some of which have superficial logic and appeal, fail. And it is known, and indisputable. As tsrblke notes, there is simply no economic rationality to all of this.
And that's the base problem. The "system" was already *long* effed up (started with the WWII exemption of medical benefits from wage calculations and taxes) by the cardinal sin of ALL stupid interventionist social engineering: distorting true prices. Shifting costs is a close cousin of this.
It is insanely infuriating to think what medical/financial miracles would be commonplace in the US, if only that sector had almost any true market/pricing dynamic allowed to operate.

I, and I think most of the other readers here, come here for one reason. Yes, it is to be told things we like to hear and what we like to hear is commentary with a rightist bias. It is that simple. There are literally thousands of news sources and commentary sites portraying the leftist vision. I can choose any of them if I want to be insulted, it's not like sneering progressives are in short supply.
Also, not demanding 100% fealty to the cause, god knows Ace himself (PBUH) has fallen off the horse every now and then, but you seem more and more like our version of John McCain. You are nominally on our side, but give the impression that you're embarrassed to be see with us and pretend not to know us in polite company.

The really sad thing is that there is no way of pointing out the damage and outrage of the situation, and opposing it, say, even of rallying the populace to oppose it (if they did). Further, there is no way to prevent any of the damage being done, or implementation of the pernicious "reforms".
If only we had responsive, representative institutions, say, even an opposition party, surely this thing could have been hobbled from the starting line.
Oh, and a system of law where obvious illegality would be checked by the courts. Yep, a court system that actually had much to do with law would be nice, too.

Single Payer for lawyers is (1) perfectly legal (bar membership requirement) (2) easily implementable and (3) wildly popular.
If you want to see Washington crumble, attack its power base. Attack the Inner Party. Attack the Lawyer-Government Complex and do it by doing to them what they do to everybody else.
Obamacare is a lawyer-built system. Have you ever been to the doctor's or a hospital lately? It's all paperwork and procedure. The easiest thing about my medication-mandated liver biopsy was the actual biopsy. The "privacy protection" was the real pain.
The problem, of course, is that paperwork is a benefit to lawyers, not a cost. More paper, more billable hours. Lawyers don't have "better things to do" because they can charge for everything. This is the problem when they make the rules, they have no sense of the cost of time.

I like how on the podcast they have been exposing Gabe.
First it was Gabe hating on Trump and going "Why can't you guys support Ted Cruz instead." And Drew gets him to show his hatred of Cruz as well. You know because Gabe thinks that Cruz is playing us. And we are MUCH MUCH MUCH worse than other countries on this score. I don't know if people know this, but lawyers don't run the show over there. Because of our Federal system and out-of-control judiciary, nobody knows what the law is at any moment. The law isn't even "the law" it's whatever you can get a judge to rule.
So that's why the Apple Terms of Service is 60 pages long, updated every 3 months and you're expected to have read and memorized it entirely.

My school has one of the best Health Law programs in the country (at an otherwise mediocre law school.)
And the first bioethics PhD IIRC.
They have incredibly limited interaction. Indeed only 2 lawyers who started the JD/PhD ever finished the PhD part.
But I digress. Point is, law program did a big HIPAA class after HIPAA launched. Class ended with "well at least that's our best guess, who knows how it'll actually play out."

I'd note that Kevorkian's first victim actually had no active illness. She was at risk for something (might have even been inevitable like Huntington's I forget) but at the time no signs or symptoms.

Having moved to the San Antonio area after retiring, I was amazed at the types of vehicles I saw illegals driving.
I wonder if they are using their forged/stolen credentials to get car loans they have no intention of paying, or if they are actually making that much money working off the books?
I used to be proud to be a good citizen who obeyed laws and followed the rules of my society.
Now I just feel like a used up chump.

The fines weren't actually that bad until fairly recently. Now they've become potentially astronomical. Sounds like that doctor's office staff needs some additional training. Disclosure of PHI for treatment purposes is one of the clearest exceptions.

That was one of the first visible clues - the construction around our place is (ok, should be) illuminating. Weekends (when workers show up in their own vehicles) are the giveaway - the local younger guy shows up in the older Corolla or obviously used pickemuptruck.

Yeah but why take even a minimal risk when you can pile more paperwork on the patient. (Minimal to them even, since the HIPAA paperwork doubles as a "Where do I send this to?" Form.)
On the other side of things, consent forms are a joke these days. Heck when my wife gave birth they just had her sign a digital pad that said "I consent to procedures." (Her doc is good so he made sure we were as prepared and informed as is possible for an instrument delivery. Which is to say only marginally understanding of what's about to go down.)

That's what has me puzzled. Presumably, the illegal is using a stolen SSN so that the employer can use the figleaf of claiming to pay payroll taxes. So this should mean that taxes are withheld, even if the illegal never bothers to file a return.
They don't own housing, they rent, so they pay property taxes indirectly through the landlord.
So I wonder whether the ones with blinged out vehicles and nightclubbing clothes didn't bother to get stolen credentials, or if they can actually make that much cash under the table.
But then again, I guess your cost of living must be real low when you bunk up six to a room.
