Red State vs. Blue State: The Real Data [CBD]

Here's an interesting article from The Federalist about the skewing of poverty measures. Most of us around these parts laugh at government data, but this is a nice little debunking of the myth that Red states are poorer.....America's Future: California or Texas

The familiar official measure is more than 50 years old, and is showing its age. It has two huge shortcomings: it considers the cost of living to be the same in the 48 contiguous states (a patently ridiculous proposition when considering that the average rent in San Francisco in the first quarter of 2015 was $3,458 vs. $867 in Houston), and it doesn't account for in-kind benefits, such as Section Eight housing subsidies and Electronic Benefit Transfer cards (food stamps).

Thus, the federal governmen's main poverty gauge undercounts material poverty levels in high-cost states such as California, New York, and Hawaii, while over-counting true poverty in much of the low-cost Midwest and South.

34 VtheK,

Why would you want recycling programs?

There is:

1) Zero scientific basis for them

2) more energy is consumed by them than saved.

3) no net money saving by such programs

4) Plus, they are generally huge graft-portholes to the connected.

Around here, we don't have a choice (paying for it, I mean). So I take cardboard boxes and soda cans, fill up the recycle bin, and let them take both, wherever they please, I don't care where. It's less work for me, and rips my trashbags less. Otherwise, I would not bother separating.

66 Anyone with more than two brain cells to rub together knew many years ago about the differences between places like California or New York, and, say, Texas.

Back around 1991 I was offered an IT job (network) in L.A., at a salary of about $40K a year. This was a fair bit more than what I was earning here (Houston) at the time, so I looked into it. Of course, the first thing I checked was the cost of living out there. What I found out was that rents, food, utilities, insurance, taxes, fuel, all the usual metrics, were way above anything you'd see here in Texas.

In fact, after crunching the numbers I figured that just to break even in terms of the standard of living I had here would require an annual salary out there closer to $70K, which was not going to happen.

Needless to say, I didn't take the job...

Kudos to the Horde. One of the funniest things one can find anywhere is a comment thread commenting on things like the disappearance of WD's Trump post. High-larious.

Also, kudos to ace for having (and keeping) a platform/blog that has these bizarre quirks. I love it.

As for recycling, time to stipulate several true things, and realize they're all true at the same time:

* recycling is an irrational and religious thing for the usual suspects (gaia-worshippers, and scientifically/economically illiterate well-meaning people - i.e. NPR listeners)

*some kinds of recycling make normal economic sense; commercial recycling of course has existed since the industrial age began - all a question of the $$

* urban, consumer/mass recycling CAN make economic sense; in some areas like SoCal, the $$$ calculation must include the very pricey cost of landfills - in fact extending the lifespan of existing landfills is a major/primary reason for some recycling here - so in such cases it really *is* economically rational (and doesn't depend, solely, on the market prices of recycled materials)

To me, as with just about everything, recycling can be subject to a cold rational analysis, centered on $$$. No doubt in many markets it makes little sense.

There are of course small commercially-based recycling outfits all over, in fact there are several chains here in SoCal. Don't believe they get public $$$ (though some complicated yet valid economic analysis might show that in fact public recycling affects their markets such as to make them profitable when they wouldn't be - though I think the effect would work the other direction, when you think about it).

In any case, I take my aluminum cans and "dirty brass" (um, I reload) to them couple times a year, pays for a few bricks of primers. That's my "recycling" motivation ....

Grump, could you please come to SoCal and be my real estate agent? I think you vastly, vastlyunder-estimate the insane (insane) real estate prices out here, and not just in the already-developed areas. The cost of acquiring and using brand-new landfills in SD County would be astronomical.

CA's recycling was kick-started by Sacramento for presumably stupid reasons. But landfill costs easily make it a cost-saving measure, at least in the short- and medium-run, for some areas.

willow, you said it.

Many Americans of a certain age literally didn't pay much attention to food prices (outside the usual premium categories of meat/fish, for example) their entire lives - until now. Growing up in CA, you didn't really have to pay that much attention to, especially, produce prices.

Now? Lemons for 80 centsA PIECE? WTF?

Still don't understand how the various CPIs have not reflected the obvious, dramatic, rapid increase in the price of basics going back a few years now. I hear one of the measures (hilariously) excluded food ampersand fuel due to their "volatility" - yeah, that makes sense, you're measuring price movements, but don't include them if they're "volatile"!!

So, anybody gonna hang here? Not a gamer, so no interest in the nerd threads.

naturalfake, yep, lots of empty land, viewed from space. Costs of transportation to said remote spots - even with lower fuel costs than today - not so good. Eventually new landfills will be needed, no doubt. But for now there is a very solid, mundane cost-based case for extending landfill lifespan.

Same sort of real economic and environmental analysis that would result in forever banishing talk of "water shortages" here - coastal new-design nuke plants (thorium) with desalination co-generation activity. As blindingly clear as using a back-hoe to dig a ditch or immunize school kids against measles. Yet - well, you know.

And NEVER, under any circumstances, buy even-numbered versions of Windows.

Windows 3.1? OK. Windows 95? The suck. Windows 98? OK. Windows ME? The suck. Windows XP? OK. Windows Vista? The suck.^2 Windows 7? OK. Windows 8? The suck. That suggests Windows 9 is OK, but Windows 10 will be the suck.

Exactly. It's pretty clear that MS just shoves shit out the door and waits for howls from users, then fixes them. For example, it was very clear that Vista was a test version of Windows 7; they even used the same screen graphics, etc. They just fixed the worst f-ups in Vista and released that as W7.

My laptop runs Windows7. My understanding is that W10 is supposed to be an improvement over W8 and all its tablet type stuff.

Why do I need W10 at all?

Answer this using little words please. I'm amazed I can regularly turn the machine on correctly.

Wrong place gal. I'll make it easy and just mention Baltimore. Black majority city, black mayor, black chief of police, black majority council, it is not the race, but the economic status of the citizens. And by the way, they are all democrats. It's probably just another way to paint Republicans as racists. If they get booted out, or if the R's refuse to mouth their slogans or cave in to their demands, the media gets a chance to say, "Look at those wacisty Wepublicans."

You probably don't. Depending upon how long you want to keep your laptop, you may benefit from a Windows 10 upgrade as Microsoft will not provide security updates for Windows 7 past January 2020. However, you will have a year past the official Win10 release to make the decision.

I doubt I will be installing Windows 10 on any of my Windows 7/8 machines until the first service pack.

Hmf. I worked for a company that produced 'Smart' environmental controls. Remote locations were controlled by a central system. If something went sour, with communications, then the local system would shift to autonomous mode and soldier on.

We had a guy from a well known corporation which supplies aerospace and the military drop by to talk to us. His division manufactures stuff which sometimes vaporizes the manufacturing plant, or a bunker where their product is stored.

After we explained our system to him, he said, "So..., if I lose a building, everything else will keep working, right?"

"Sure", we said, "it happens all of the the time. A contractor cuts a cable, a lightening strike..., things like that."

"No", he said, " I mean LOSE a building."
