Chess On A Sunday Evening [OregonMuse]
Howdy, folks. This is an open thread, but in memory of the late, unlamented Saturday afternoon chess thread from a couple of years ago, I have some chess content I've been sitting on for awhile. First up, is the upcoming Bobby Fischer biopic, Pawn Sacrifice, due out in September. My comments follow.
There have been some other movies about Fischer I've watched on Netflix, and all of them have been uniformly bad. This one looks like it might be good, so I think I'd like to see it. However:
1. I wish they'd stop portraying Fischer as a child prodigy. ("Who taught him to move like this?" "He taught himself."). Fischer was not a child prodigy, plain and simple. When Bobby started playng serious chess, certainly he rapidly got to the point was a strong player with potential, but I don't think he was all that different than any number of other young, strong players with potential. He didn't start getting really good until about age 12, and he didn't start getting scary good until age 14-15. Up to that point, he was the youngest ever to earn a Grandmaster title, and while that's certainly a remarkable achievement, that doesn't make him a child prodigy. A real child prodigy would be someone like the great Cuban champion Jose Capablanca, who learned the moves at age 3 by watching his father play. Or Sammy Reshevsky, who was doing simultaneous exhibitions against adult competition when he was 6 or 7. 2, What was up with Fischer walking around Reykjavik with a paper bag on his head? And trash talking Boris Spassky on the beach? I remember the shenanigans at the 1972 world championship, but not those incidents. I hate it when they make stuff up; Bobby was nutty enough so they didn't have to embellishit. 3. Another thing that worries me about that "he taught himself" line is, are they going to claim that Fischer achieved what he did without any teachers whatsoever? Because if they are, that's flat out wrong, Bobby had more than one coach, albeit early on in his career But, despite these potential flaws, I think I would like to see this movie.
The second item here is a chess puzzle. Here you see three White pieces on the board, but no Black pieces. To solve this puzzle, you need to provide 3 different possible locations for the Black King. That is, on what squares do you place the Black King such that: 1. The position is a stalemate for Black. That is, it is Black's move, but there's no safe square to move to. 2. Black has just been checkmated 3. It's White's move and it's mate in one. So there are three answers, and they're all different. And, as far as I can tell, there's only one possibility for each solution. Personally, I found the first two fairly quickly. The 3rd one took me awhile, not sure why. So, have at it. As I said, it's an open thread.

"Checkmate" comes from medieval Persian, "Shah qmat" meaning "The King is dead."
The Europeans learned of chess from of the Persians (who learned of it from its inventors, the Indians), so many Persian terms stuck.

Well, Fischer was a child prodigy in terms of the general population...but chess is littered with child prodicgies, so in chess terms, Bobby Fischer was (as you note) merely a so-so child prodigy compared to others like Reshevsky (who was probably the greatest of them all).
What Fischer really was was a teen prodigy. A great chess players skyrocket in their teens, but Bobby went from random kid player to world class in about 3 years.

believe it or not, that is actually an issue.
Built into the rules of the game is that "white" (the player with the light-colored pieces) ALWAYS goes first. As a result, white is generally considered (borne out by statistics) to have the advantage throughout the game. So, in chess, there really is "white privilege."
Secondly: the embarrassing absence of world-class black players, in any country in the world.
The US has, I believe, only one or two black grandmasters. One of them, Maurice Ashley, has basically stopped playing to become the main announcer and play-by-play commentator at big chess tournaments, because he's good at maming things sound exciting. But in truth he never was never anywhere near the top 100 in the country, and not even in the top 1,000 in the world.
Africa has a handful of grandmasters, but all of them (or almost all of them) are "white" Africans from South Africa or Zimbabwe/Rhodesia.
And aside from that, I can't really think of any.
Now, similarly, there are basically no good chess players from Japan, because it simply isn't part of their culture, just as it isn't part of the culture of Africa. So that explains much of it.
But in the US and Europe there is no real-world discrimination in chess tournaments and training, and yet still it remains a pursuit in which almost no black players excel.
Sure, there are plenty plenty black "club players" and even black masters, but they almost never rise above that level.
So the question of "Is chess racist" has indeed arisen.
But since chess players are usually intensely apolitical, the attempt to stir the pot goes nowhere.

While I know the moves of the chess pieces I have never been able to find a book or program that teaches basic stratagey and tactics... which pices to develop first, a few basic attack and defense patterns, etc.
Any help would be appreciated!

One of the speculations that I'd read about Fischer/Spassky was that a LOT of Fischer's insane behavior was calculated. He was trolling Spassky to fuck up the Russian's mind and distract him.
Of course, Fischer was genuinely batshit insane so it wasn't a stretch.

The Senate in a rare Sunday session has voted to advance legislation reauthorizing the Export-Import Bank, which expired last month.
Over objections from conservatives, the Senate voted 67-26 to end debate on a measure to add language reauthorizing the banks charter to federal highway spending legislation. All of the 26 no votes came from the GOP, while 24 Republicans voted to move forward with reauthorizing the bank.
A vote to formally add the language to the highway bill will come later this week.
Gosh, I wonder if the Ex-Im will be reauthorized on a razor thin oh so close one vote margin in the final vote?

The Senate on Sunday rejected a GOP-led amendment to repeal ObamaCare that fell several votes short of a 60-vote threshold to advance. The largely symbolic vote, which was attached to a three-year highway funding bill, marked the Senates first attempt to repeal ObamaCare since Republicans took control of the chamber in January.
The measure had been certain to fail, lacking support from any Democrats. The final vote was 49-43 along party lines, with eight senators not voting. Several Republican senators blasted it as a show vote that was intended to appease conservatives angry about a planned vote to reauthorize the Export-Import Bank.

Senators, by a voice vote, upheld the ruling of the Senate chair. Because Majority Mitch McConnell had "filled the tree," a procedural move that blocks further amendments, Cruz's maneuver was ruled "not in order."

Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) was rebuked by his Senate colleagues on Sunday as he tried to force a vote on defunding Planned Parenthood. Lee had tried to attach an amendment eliminating all federal funds for Planned Parenthood to the vote on Congresss must-pass highway legislation.
The amendment was rejected by the chair of the Senate, who called it out of order because it was not germane to the highway bill. Lee attempted to override the decision, but couldnt get the support of 10 other senators.

Just Google "basic chess strategy" or "basic chess tactics". You'll get lots of book suggestions not to mention a holy crap ton of free material, articles, tutorials, and what have you, so you probably won't even need to buy a book.

It incorporates many interviews with the people who actually knew him from the era.
It's not without faults, but it has proven to be the best documentary so far.

This never even came close to happening before, even in the Fischer era.
The players are:
World #4: Hikaru Nakamura, rating 2814
Grew up, I believe, in Seattle. Has for many years been legendary as the world's best "speed chess" (under five minutes) player, and shocked everyone by proving he was just about the best in slow chess too.
World #5, Fabiano Caruana, rating 2808
Born in and grew up in Miami. But because both his parents were Italian citizens at the time of his brith, he had dual Italian citizenship too. So for a while he chose to play for the nation of Italy -- even though he doesn't speak a word of Italian! Eventually he gave up the Italian gimmick, and now plays for his home country the US again.
World #7 Wesley So, rating 2779.
Born in the Philippines, but emigrated to the US to go to college, then stayed to become a chess professional.
All three of these guys have a legitimate shot at the world championship one day, and all are insanely talented. Many would argue that if Bobby Fischer climbed into a time machine in 1972 and traveled to 2015, he would lose to all three of them. (Mostly because of opening theory -- he'd get a lost position out of the opening, and these guys never let the advantage slip).
So the US is in some ways more of a chess power now than back in Fischer's time!

Yes, I totally agree. In some ways, I think Fischer was overrated as a player. Yeah, I went there. He could have been way greater had he been able to keep his inner demons in check. Which, after 1972, just become to difficult. At that point, he concluded that he had nothing more to prove, so he just let 'em all run free.
And the results were ugly and thoroughly disgusting.

So just because I probably haven't clicked on such a "news" source in years, I glanced at the CBSNews thing on Trump attacking Walker that Y-not put in the sidebar.
Curious. He makes several specific and concrete attacks on the heart of Walker's record in WI. Basically that the state's finances are a mess, and that because of this roads and schools are too.
Doesn't sound like either part of that is right. Any of our good WI morons about to debunk/correct? We have a few here who are very on top of WI state guvamint stuff.

The Chamber of Commerce is just a political Front for many wealthy American corporatists that are pretty mad at the Middle Class and associated hangers-on (like their children) for expecting to make a decent living and be well-paid in their jobs. So they are looking for new workers who will do these jobs for less, and not rock the boat so much. Thus the Mexican invasion (crime, what crime?), H1-B and L1-B visas. Sure we're gonna take it on the chin here, but so what? Whaddya gonna do, vote against us? Ha-ha-ha.
This dovetails nicely into the plans of the Left and their desire to get a new voting public that will rubber stamp their statist desires and finally kill this Constitutional Republic, and replace it with a Total Democracy (controlled by the Left).Whaddya gonna do? Vote against that? Ha-Ha-Ha.
Got us comin' and goin'. They are not gonna stand for any populist uprising and voters that start to think for themselves.
Yesterday, my wife and I were driving down I-75 in Ohio, and a caravan of cars and pickups was driving north, flying both the American flag and the Confederate Battle flag. In Ohio, on a Saturday afternoon.

PNC Bank was forced to take TARP money, even though they were in good shape, in 2009. So they took the money and bought out National City Bank, and put about 1000 people out of work in Cleveland and elsewhere when they closed the management offices, etc. for National City.

My nephew works for JP Morgan Chase as a lowly branch manager, and was laughing about Jamie Dimon basically calling Obama an idiot, and then getting a fine for $17 BILLION dollars for some other Big Bank pseudo - scandal, and they still made a profit that quarter after cutting a check for it.

The only chess book I've ever read, ever, was "Think Like a Grandmaster" by Kotov. Quite excellent -- he was considered one of the architects of the Soviet training method, and his techniques turned Russia from a third-world backwater to the leading chess nation.
Beware, however, that his other books features anti-US and pro-Soviet propaganda. But luckily "Think Like a Grandmaster" is mostly free from that. It's now considered a great classic in the "learn chess" genre, deservedly so.
However, it is more like a bridge from "intermediate" to "advanced", rather than from "beginner" to "intermediate."
Even so, I do recommend it, if you want o hyper-accelerate your chess knowledge.

In part. The really big mega-businesses, banks, corporations are working hand-in-hand with the Federal government and the regulatory state to throttle any possible competition.
Small and medium size businesses, which are the real employment growth drivers, are being crushed by regulation and the rush to control the economy by the government-ruling class - chamber-pot of commerce. Which is a significant part of the dropping labor participation rate.
As has been foreseen by the people that tell Obama what to do.

My favourite chess on film is at the beginning of the Russian Sherlock Holmes series made in the late 70s. Holmes and Watson play a game of chess (typical Russian touch!) and I burst out laughing to see how differently chess is portrayed on American and Russian cinema. In an American film, it's White moves a pawn, then Black moves a pawn, then White moves something else, then... long, long pause, which settles down into what will obviously be MINUTES of concentration. With the Russians, it's bam-bam-bam-bam... Eighteen moves in about 15 seconds! And the game is over half a dozen moves later. So that's how Russians play chess!

I'm probably one of the shittiest chess players on the planet. But I don't mind losing to people, if anyone wants to play. I use the Free game "Chess by post" which is more or less digital correspondence chess. (In that it's asynchronous).

Speaking to labor, my company is a great example. My program is doing 25% more business than it was 2-3 years ago. But, they WILL NOT hire any additional employees to handle it. No sir. Lord John Sewel, a deputy speaker who oversees standards in the House of Lords, resigned amid claims in 'The Sun' he took the Class A drug at a sex party.

Didn't get much attention, but last year (?) Harper did what should have been done by everybody, always (in which case things would be mighty different). He met with the Palestinian "leadership", during which meeting he bitch-slapped them around for their mendacious criminal idiocy, and then already having done what almost nobody does in private, went out and did what *nobody* ever does - repeated the bitch-slapping in public, and piled on.
Only other time - ever - I can remember a western leader just dropping the nonsense and talking plainly (again, it matters, and it made a difference) was when Dubya had his joint appearance with Sharon. Right after the nth Palestinian pledge of good behavior, and immediately after the ship Karine A was nabbed by the Israelis, proving their mendacity (oh, Iranian-supplied weapons for Gaza, if you're wondering). Dubya just talked plainly - as of course did Sharon - and the press, the Beltway, the UN, the Euros were so taken aback they just whimpered and took their beating.

He was a grandmaster, but had a pretty laid-back writing style. Maybe the book was intermediate-to-advanced for its time. But I think it is accessible for beginners. Any casual player who has read it will have a decided advantage over one who hasn't.

There will be an election in Canada in the fall, unless Harper calls it earlier, which he may. The front-running opposition party is the New Democrats, not the Liberals led by the Spawn of Trudeau. The latter is frightening, but the former is more so. It's a shame that the NDs are surging on the federal front because of their win in Alberta, which had never elected a left-of-centre (doing this intentionally) party since the province was created in 1905. The Alberta NDP was elected because the Progressive Conservative Party (don't ask) had been in power since 1971, had a bunch of scandals, got a new leader, and he called an election too early. They paid dearly, and now Alberta will.
The NDP surge federally is because people think that because they were elected in Alberta, they must be OK. They couldn't be more wrong.

It was a situation where the dominant right-of-centre party got caught up in scandal, turfed the leader, brought in a new one, and he was dumb and called an early election (in Canada, elections are held every 5 years unless the ruling party wants to hold one earlier; in this case, he asked for it earlier).
There is another right-of-centre party in the province, so there was a vote split. On the left, there were 3 parties, but the NDP dominated, and therefore won a bunch of seats because of the right split. I'll add that during the one debate with the party leaders, the NDP leader did really well (I listened online).
The problem is that Albertans are learning that because they elected an inexperienced government (and boy, did they) people are being brought in from other parts of the country to actually run the province and policies are being implemented that people may not like. Congrats, you're stuck until 2020.
I'll also add that Harper is the Prime Minister of Canada because of a left vote split.

There wouldn't be a Prime Minister Stephen Harper if the right-of-centre party named the Reform Party hadn't merged with the Progressive Conservatives, which in 1993 (after Mulroney) melted down from a majority in the Canadian Parliament to 2 seats.

To my mind, WD has always emphasized what unites us as a people, and his musings on "race" are usually observations on race mongering and political hackery. He lauds those fundamental principles that are a foundation under everyone's feet, not the race/class/gender identity pandering that builds walls.

Damn! I LOVED that movie... and then I read his history.
The movie left out some incredibly dramatic stuff in order to shoehorn in their made-up B.S.
In the movie he tells Dr. Treves' wife that he doesn't know where his mother is, and Mrs. Treves cries.
Gee, that's dramatic, huh?
Except that in reality his mother died when he was a child and right when his deformities were just starting to look gruesome and incurable. She was the only one who loved him, and his father actually beat the hell out of him and threw him out of the house (after bringing a wicked stepmother into his life).
Why the hell would they drop that in favor of utter nonsense?
Instead they invent some showman who beats him. The real showman was actually good to him, gave him a handsome portion of the money from their freak show.
The movie even gets his name wrong. He was Joseph Merrick, not John Merrick.
The book "The True History Of The Elephant Man" by Howell and Ford is excellent!
...And I still like the movie for its mood, music and direction. But, damn! Why not get it right?

I love to play pool and watch others. After a long time at the game, it also comes down somewhat to who has the best memory (of the best shot to play under so many different situations). But, there are so many different games to play (8 ball, 9 ball, straight, snooker, billiards) and you also need the skill and dexterity to actually make the shot after you have decided which is the best shot to try.

I don't think of Caruana as having been a Miami resident first and foremost. It depends on how you define "grew up in", I suppose, since when I used to see him play in the NY State Championship, he was living in Brooklyn, as I recall. I think his rating was somewhere around 2100 (USCF) when he was 9 or 10 already.

Is there any such recommended ' bridge ' book for someone who plays chess and wants to move to the next level incrementally?
It depends on what your level is now. If you're average tournament strength, for example, there is Silman's How to Reassess Your Chess with accompanying workbook, which, while it's really a somewhat narrowly focused book, is a good way to open your eyes to certain aspects of strategy. Chess Strategy for Club Players by Grooten is a little more broadly useful. I think you can also consider something like Endgame Challenge! by John Hall (if it's still in print).
The problem with recommending the kind of book you describe is that there are various senses of being "beginner" or "advanced" in chess, and those terms can mean different things to different people. For me, for example, I consider pretty much everybody rated up to 900 or so 'beginner' (thus including a fair number of my students), and 'advanced' would mean 2000 and up. Someone else, though, might say 'beginner' is somebody who only just learned the moves of the pieces (and may not even know the castling rules yet), whereas 'advanced' to him/her might mean anybody who has a rating and plays in more than, say, two tournaments a year.
On top of that, there's the fact that you have a whole spectrum of skill levels in between 'beginner' and 'advanced'. There are significant and noticeable differences between the ways people with USCF ratings of 800 and 1200 tend to play, or between the same 1200 and a 1700, or even between 1700 and 1900. So I think at each of these points, there can be a different 'bridge' to cross conceptually.
