What's your favorite movie for... ...going out with "the guys"? ...a first date? ...a quiet night at home? ...getting over insomnia? One of my go-to "insomnia" movies is "My Cousin Vinny." I almost always fall asleep at the same part of the movie. Rarely fails me. It's not that I don't like that movie. I DO like it. But it's got the right pacing and sound level (no explosions), plus a decent soundtrack. Very relaxing. The first movie I ever saw with my then-boyfriend/future-husband was "Ghostbusters." I was ticked off, though, because he had already seen it with his bff. My life is a Seinfeld episode, apparently.

...going out with "the guys"? --Last "going out with the guys" movie I recall watching was Return of the King. Since then, with fatherhood I've watched next to nothing without the wifey and/or the littl'un. ...a first date? --Damn, can't recall but I never saw a movie on the first date --too hard to get to know each other when the film is rolling. My old friend liked to have his dates watch Braveheart(!) with dinner at home though. ...a quiet night at home? --Damn, almost anything. From the category, "Life Imitating Art", comes ...
On Friday, Chrysler announced that it's issuing a formal recall for 1.4 million vehicles that may be affected by a hackable software vulnerability in Chrysler's Uconnect dashboard computers. The vulnerability was first demonstrated to WIRED by security researchers Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek earlier this month when they wirelessly hacked a Jeep I was driving, taking over dashboard functions, steering, transmission and brakes. The recall doesn't actually require Chrysler owners to bring their cars, trucks and SUVs to a dealer. Instead, they'll be sent a USB drive with a software update they can install through the port on their vehicle's dashboard. .... the revolution will be installed via a USB flash drive. Regarding insomnia, Mrs. Chronda trained me to sleep with the TV on (before her, I required silence). I've found the best things when I'm having trouble are:
- Harry Potter movies (best for me is Goblet of Fire; I frequently fall asleep right after the kettle whistles in the opening). - Crest of the Stars, although sometimes it takes me until halfway through episode 3 to fall asleep. - Columbo. Except for season 1 episode 7, in which a woman's plan to murder her husband involves setting off a very loud burglar alarm. Posted by: Anachronda at July 25, 2015 06:04 PM (o78gS) 11
I used to love Sleepless in Seattle for chilling out and have seen it far too many times that I would ever admit, but along the way I stopped seeing a charming rom-com and started seeing Ryan's character for as a whacked-out liar and stalker who ridicules a kind and gentle man, keeping him on the hook whilst she sets her hooks into a another.
Ick. I do, however, still really like You've Got Mail and, another Ryan flick, When Harry Met Sally. Presently, my go-to rom-com is Return to Me. It's just about the perfect rom-com. I also like Cool Runnings because it's simple and funny and it's completely guilt-free. Clueless is a magnet movie that I've yet to pass on the channel guide without stopping. When I want to watch something non-rom-comy I watch The Lincoln Lawyer. I thought of Singles yesterday and think I'd like to watch it again. And Primary Colors. Billy Bob Thornton as Carville is too good to pass up. Hell. Who can choose just a handful of movies as their faves? Posted by: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse at July 25, 2015 06:04 PM (PMlgt) 12

For a first date, (and this tells you how long I've been out of the dating scene) Much Ado About Nothing or any other decent Shakespearean love story. Posted by: Y-not --------------- I was joshing. I'm a born and bred Southerner. I would say 'unreconstructed', but I'd probably be hunted down by the DoJ. I actually appreciated the discussion about preparing grits. Most from other parts of the nation would be as clueless as Vinny. A married couple of my acquaintance moved out to Washington state, where he had a job with Boeing. Their first Christmas, I mailed them a present of a sack of grits, figuring that they might be suffering from deprivation. Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at July 25, 2015 06:14 PM (9mTYi) 22

So many good ones, and we can watch them back to back. Or we download (e.g. Suits). We cannot handle commercials anymore. night time in bed? any of the Bourne movies. They always seem to be on, and since I've seen them, I can watch them and fall asleep. But, to be honest, I usually put on RedEye or something (a replay from Roku), and laugh myself to sleep. Out with friends: well, with my circle of friends, it's generally going to be fantasy or sci-fi. LOTR Extended Editions, Stardust, Chronicles of Narnia, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, that sort of thing. Or else introducing newbies to classic movies like Duck Soup or The Great Race.
Alas, I have yet to convince anyone to come over and watch Desperate Journey with me, even though it's got one of my favorite Reagan movie moments ("The iron fist has a glass jaw"). Date: Wouldn't know. Night in: I tend to marathon while I'm working on other stuff, so I'll typically cycle through my Westerns and war movies--McLintock!, El Dorado, The Longest Day, Ike: Countdown to D-Day, etc.--and other classics like The Adventures of Robin Hood, The Mark of Zorro, and Witness for the Prosecution. For sleeping: I'll often put in a DVD of a show like Mission: Impossible or Hogan's Heroes, but a great TV movie that I really enjoy but also serves as an excellent sleep aid is The Seven Dials Mystery. I had grits recently at a Cracker Barrel and was a bit disappointed. (The rest of the meal was good, though.) Posted by: Y-not ------------------- Preferences, of course, differ. My tastes run to a consistency that allows for them to be easily eaten with a fork. Not gummy, but certainly not runny. Cracker barrel grits are almost always runny, and without much flavor.. I'm not sure why that is, unless they make large potfuls, and initially (periodically) water them down through the day. I would not be stunned to find that they use instant grits. That is a wonderful film, and Wayne plays the role that he was born to play. No opinion on the movie questions. I just got chased inside by a severe thunderstorm preceded by a vicious burst of wind. Came from all directions in quick succession, and picked up loose light stuff, and flung it around the yard. I had just returned to the garage with a gas can in hand after refilling the riding mower, when the wind struck. After it died down a little, the dog and I bolted into the house. Power went off, then returned, so here we are in the basement, surfing the Internet, which is spotty, probably because the antenna dish is being shaken.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon ------------- Plenty of love, even if it is a Ford. One thing that struck me in that movie, was that in spite of the Mustang having been prepped, it still exhibited poor rear axle control. At one or two spots, you can see terrible axle tramp. Best movies that you will never watch again?
United 93. Went opening weekend with a bunch of friends. The shaky cam made me motion-sick, but I stayed to listen and made myself watch what I could. It was well done, I thought... but it was rather like going to a funeral. Related: I can't bring myself to watch The Passion of the Christ. I'm sure it's excellent, but I have a very strong visual memory and a very vivid imagination, and even a clinical description of what Jesus went through at Calvary can bring me to tears. I knew I didn't need those images haunting me. Posted by: Elisabeth G. Wolfe at July 25, 2015 07:22 PM (iuQS7) Posted by: King Garrett at July 25, 2015 07:22 PM (gN/Xg) 196
Guy movie? I don't much care for action movies. Would "Pinocchio" count as a guy movie since it has only guys in it? No? Okay. I usually like Denzel Washington movies --- "Man on Fire," for example --- because there is a personal element to his stuff beyond car crashes and chases.
Insomnia cures? The stupid Bourne movies with MATT DAMON!!! Good Lord, those are soporific beyond belief. I mean, who the hell cares about the "hero?" Kill him already. Date movie? Something short and with content that makes for conversation. Doesn't have to be a good movie necessarily but it should provide food for blab. One thing I have noticed is that all my favorite movies don't have happy endings. I think maybe those kinds of movies appeal to me more because the happy ending is so cliche.

My wife just got robbed, so I'm in a Death Wish mood. On her way to an anniversary Party, stopped to pick up books at the Library. As she's leaving, kid runs up from behind her, grabs her bag and runs across the street into woods. Wife chases briefly, slips on a hill, scrapes up her arm. Cops arrive, release the K-9's, I arrive just as they collar a kid about half a mile away, wife gets in cop car, drives over and positively ID's the criminal. After a half hour of searching, the police found her wallet, but not her cell phone. So, yeah, I'm in the mood for a vigilante flick.

"Army of Darkness" -- pure anti-depressant.
"The Professionals" -- best most underrated action adventure from the great period of 1960 masculine adventures. Also, some of the best lines ever and one of the best last lines in movies. "The Verdict" -- David Mamet brilliantly adapting (a mediocre novel) and Sidney Lumet directing one of the most finely tuned and structured dramas in modern films. This movie is about the moral conflict in every man at one point in his life but raised to encompass the very essence of corruption and the risks of moral bravery in fighting it. 76---The defining figure of the western genre - from Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales onward - is the rough man who makes the wilderness into civilization yet cannot himself fit into the world he has made. "The Man Who Killed Liberty Valence" is the western distilled down to its very essence.

Which makes me think of "American Sniper," which I liked very much, even if the war sequences were a bit too long for me. And I liked it precisely because it seemed to me to be very much of that classic Western genre. It really reminded me of "Shane" in particular. Eastwood picked up on that wolves/sheep/sheep-dog theme ---(which, I've been told, was barely in the book at all) --- and ran with it. Also, The Last of the Mohicans." Proof a great epic film is defined by aesthetic composition, moral content and physical urgency, NOT by length. Michael Mann produced the visual and imagination-stirring equivalent of a sweeping novel in two hours, and made every image count. The wordless closing act on a cliffside - a pulsing 10-minute finale of violence and heartbreak and reckoning -- is kinetic poetry.

Yes there are guidance issues and reliability issues and since President Obama has been pushing hard to develop our antimissile capabilities, they are now a totally reliable impenetrable shield. Iran probably has a capability to deliver missile warheads on the US roughly equivalent to the Soviet Union in the late 1950s or early 1960s. First date movie story. Long ago and far, far away a geeky college kid (yours truly) asked a girl to go see 2001. Behind us were two huge jocks and their simple minded cheerleader girlfriends. When the going got weird, my girl (who considered herself something of a film buff) got mad at the giggly cheerleaders who were asking the jocks what was going on. Finally, she stood up, turned around and punched a jock in the chest. I'm thinking, "OMG, I'm too young to die!" But they just laughed at her and I never asked her out again. Little more drama than I cared for.

Not saying that Baltimore is sitting on crime reports, but this just cropped up, even though some of the shootings are twenty hours old.
2 killed, 5 wounded between Friday night, and so far today. For those playing our game at home, to correct for Chicago population, multiply Baltimore events by 4.3. Our local paper doesn't publish a daily "Court Report" like I'm used to seeing in other Cities. So now I'm looking online to try to find out how I'll eventually get the crook's name/address, so I know if he's local, and if so how local? And will I likely see him again? The library is 1.3 miles from my house, I go there and to the intervening neighborhoods all the time, so does my wife.

Pretty good. I particularly liked Mike Nichols' willingness to use long continuous shots, especially the scene with Ernest Borgnine (character name?) and Jon Voight (Milo Minderbinder, that name I remember) discussing his corporation while literally *right next to them*, one of their fighter jets is crashing and burning. CBD,
I really like Brad Pitt. He can do a full spectrum of characters. I think he is under appreciated as just another pretty face. Posted by: lindafell de Spair at July 25, 2015 09:54 PM (xVgrA) 505
Recently watched THE SAND PEBBLES. Had some good parts but came away 'meh.'

I just watched Sharknado and am now almost at the end of Sharknado 2, all in preparation for watching Sharknado 3. These are truly the stupidest movies ever made, so I guess I can recommend them as movies to watch when you want to multi-task and focus on something else.

484 Speaking of Blu-Ray.....
Is the video and audio quality better than DVD, or is it just that it can store more data and has extra features and such? Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at July 25, 2015 09:45 PM (Zu3d9) I don't think its quite the jump you'd experience going from watching VHS to DVD but there's certainly an improvement. Well, if I know the CDR, the ONT should be along soon.
Great movie chat, y'all. This was fun. We should do it again. Posted by: Chi at July 25, 2015 10:01 PM (EfRAJ) 512

Music is no longer high fidelity...it is compressed beyond all recognition. Until bandwidth improves significantly, streamed movies are the same.
Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at July 25, 2015 09:50 PM (Zu3d9) An entire generation has been reared with MP3 music and absolutely crappy cell phone audio. Posted by: Bertram Cabot Jr. at July 25, 2015 10:03 PM (W5DcG) 515
World War Z was also a solid movie. Brad Pitt was under control, which made it a good movie. The director did a good job with him. Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at July 25, 2015 09:51 PM (Zu3d9) Agreed. Solid movie. Which should have had ANY title except World War Z. The only thing that survived from the excellent book is the Israeli "Tenth Man" thing. So many fantastically cinematic scenes in the book, and they dumped it all. Fucking Hollywood cockswallup idiots. Posted by: IllTemperedCur at July 25, 2015 10:04 PM (egLDQ) 516

James Bond: It's really hard to believe that On Her Majesty's Secret Service is 45 years old. But the movie is dated to the point that I am reluctant to show it to other people.
A few notes of John Barry's score is in the new Spectre trailer, so that answers that question, Is it a remake? Posted by: BourbonChicken at July 25, 2015 10:08 PM (+4uXG) 520
Took a first date to see The Elephant Man with John Hurt.
It was a miracle there was a second date. Posted by: Ed at July 25, 2015 10:09 PM (uSM1W) 521
Blu Ray is a lot better. DVDs never competed with cinemas in terms of picture quality.
Posted by: BourbonChicken at July 25, 2015 10:11 PM (+4uXG) 522
World War Z belongs in the "terrific book, disastrous film adaptation" thread. Toward the top.

One movie I never pass by is Hatari with John Wayne and a fun supporting cast, Henry Mancini sound track, real comedy and phenomenal animal chase footage. First saw it at the theater and never miss it.

Cops called, are coming over so my wife can sign something. 16 year old, charged as an adult, 15,000 dollar bond.
Posted by: Lincolntf at July 25, 2015 08:40 PM (2cS/G) Pity the perp's in good health. So, did he throw her cellphone away, or just drop it while fleeing? Do you have an idea of the route he took? Maybe walking his trail, and periodically calling her cell with yours, you might hear it ring from where it landed? Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at July 25, 2015 10:19 PM (DAtNG) 526

@ 467 --
Yes! I remember "Special Bulletin." Saw it in college. It solidified my determination to stay in newspapers. That was then. Now I'm sick of the business. And I'm just a desk guy, never a reporter. As for movies (without quote marks for simplification): Guns of Navarone, Harold Lloyd flicks, Animal House, Connery Bond, Midnight Run, Chicken Run, first Matrix, Buster Keaton's The General. That should do for a dead thread. Posted by: Weak Geek at July 26, 2015 04:38 AM (+P39t) Processing 0.07, elapsed 0.0674 seconds. |
