A Baseball Thread: Midway through Already?! [BCochran]

[This is delayed because of the joys of Cablevision!]

baseball_thread___ill__brush_by_stoostock-d36pk9o.jpg

Hello again my fellow park rats. Grab a beer and a brat and let's talk some baseball.

So we're just over halfway through the season and I figure this is a good place to look at some statistical leaders. Sample size is plenty big enough at this point for it to be worthwhile.

Now, I know there are lots of new stats and crazy stats and OBP and WAR and OPP and NAACP and FBI and CIA and whatever else statisticians make up to justify their ongoing existence, but forget all that. Let's look at the old school stuff. Let's look at what everyone knows. The oldies but goodies.

This time around we'll look at the National League and if CBD will be so kind as to post me again next week (because I have no keys, *ahem*) we'll look at the American League next weekend.

For offensive stats, we'll check out Batting Average, Home Runs and RBIs. For pitching, we'll look at Wins, Innings Pitched and ERA.

National League

Batting Average
1) Paul Goldschmidt .341
2) Dee Gordon .338
3) Bryce Harper .333

This is Goldschmidt's 5th season in the bigs, all with the Diamondbacks, and he's a career .300 hitter who's having a breakout year. Dee Gordon finally became an everyday starter for the Dodgers last year and hit .289. Everybody knows Bryce Harper and no one is surprised to see him near the top of this list.

RBIs
1) Nolan Arenando 72
2) Paul Goldschmidt 72
3) Giancarlo Stanton 67

Arenando has been a mid-level player for the Rockies for a couple years now, but is looking to make a big impact this year. Again, Goldschmidt is raising eyebrows and making a name for himself. Stanton (his name is MIKE), is on pace for what would easily be his best statistical season.

Home Runs
1) Bryce Harper 27
2) Giancarlo Stanton 27
3) Todd Frazier 26

Harper's second appearance stuns no one. Like I said, Stanton is on pace for his most productive year. Color me unsurprised to see our HR Derby champion near the top of the list.

Wins
1) Gerrit Cole 13
2) Jake Arrieta 11
3) Michael Wacha 11

No big names here. All three pitchers have already eclipsed their previous season high totals for wins. Be interesting to see if they keep up the pace down the stretch.

Innings Pitched
1) Max Scherzer 138
2) Zack Grienke 131.1
3) Clayton Kershaw 130

Now we're talking. These are the "big boys". Scherzer, Grienke and Kershaw are considered pretty much the top of the food chain when it comes to pitching and it's no surprise to see them at the top of this list. They're their teams workhorses.

ERA
1) Zack Grienke 1.30
2) Max Scherzer 2.09
3) Jacob deGrom 2.18

Yeah. 1.30...you read that right. Second most innings pitched and just an absurd ERA from Grienke. Scherzer is no surprise as well. deGrom has been a pleasant surprise for the Mets. He's leading the staff in pretty much every category. Of course, you could say that Harvey, Colon and Niese have all underperformed, but let's not take anything away from the young man who's in his second season in the bigs.

Alright, I can hear your eyes glazing over from the stats. Let's stop here and pick it up with the AL next time around.

As always, thanks to Ace, the Cobs and CBD for the post. Hope you folks enjoy it and the season.

Reds traded Johnny Cueto to the Royals today for prospects Brandon Finnegan, Cody Reed, and John Lamb

Lots of other rumors, mostly on Cole Hamels whose price just went way up again after he no-hit the Cubbies yesterday

19 Rampant trade speculation regarding the San Diego Padres, who traded away their farm system for some big names in a push to go for it all this year. The big push didn't work out so well, so AJ "Rock Star GM" Preller now is looking to trade what he can to restock the farm system he traded away. But sportswriters still love Rock Star Preller because he makes the kind of trades that sportswriters would make.

Rock Star Preller won't be able to dump Matt Kemp and his bloated salary, nobody is sucker enough to take that on twice

41 I got to listen to the last three innings of Cole Hamels' no-hitter on the radio yesterday. (I haven't had TV since 2012).

He's played his entire career with the Phillies since 2006, but trade rumors are rampant. Some contending teams would like to pick up more pitching, and the Phils need young prospects for the future.

There was quite a bit of talk yesterday that that might have been Hamels' last start as a Phillie. If so, what a way to go out. It might be the first time in MLB history that a pitcher was traded immediately after pitching a no-hitter.

Conforto looks like he could be the real deal, he wasn't overmatched. There have been rampant rumors that Alderson is talking to the Reds about Jay Bruce and to the Brewers about Carlos Gomez. The Bruce rumors involve trading Zach Wheeler (who is recovering from TJ surgery) for Bruce. There was talk about Justin Upton but apparently Rock Star Preller was asking for Syndegaard AND Matz and no money for remaining salary. Upton would be a two month rental who is in a bad slump and hurting. Since Alderson has stated emphatically that none of the young Big Four are up for discussion, I'd imagine that he hung up the phone.

The Reds are in a quandry whether to go "all in" on rebuilding or to think that they can make some changes and be competitive next year.
If they trade Bruce, then they are all in for rebuilding.

I hope the Royals are happy with Cueto. He's really a great guy and a lot of fun to watch. Very well liked player with his team mates. If not for Kershaw, he would have won the NL Cy Young last year.

135 Stanton (his name is MIKE), is on pace for what would easily be his best statistical season.

His name is Giancarlo. He went by Mike until around 2012 because his Dad calls him Mike, it's part of Giancarlo's middle name. His Mom calls him Cruz, which is his other middle name. As far as him perhaps having his best statistical season, that was true until he went on the DL about a month ago. Hopefully he'll pick up where he left off. He's a terrific player.

143 Yeah.

Harvey hasn't underperformed when you consider that it's his first year back from TJ surgery. It usually takes a year for a pitcher to get his command back, and Harvey's 99 mph fastball is fine, but he'd been having trouble with commanding his killer slider.

Some observers say that with deGrom and Syndegaard, Harvey could end up being the 3rd best pitcher on that staff, or even 4th because Steven Matz is that good too.

Colon has performed as would be expected of a 42 year old very obese pitcher who relies on guile with a 90 mph fastball and no breaking pitches. He does it very well when he's locating and changing speeds. On days he doesn't, he's pitching BP but he's a character who is fun to watch even on bad days.

Niese has been pitching very well for the last 6 weeks and ran into hard luck because even bad opposing pitchers looked like Cy Young candidates against the Mets lineup. He got hit hard on Friday night, but like Greinke his wife was in labor. I read that Niese actually watched his wife give birth online from the dugout.

Posted by: Mallamutt, RINO President for Life at July 26, 2015 10:25 PM (/HC6x)

Now that's a good question...Staunton was injured this year -goodness knows what his stats would look like if he wasn't.

I've considered Trout the best overall player for a while, but you can certainly make the case for Harper - and Paul Goldschmidt as well.

Goldschmidt's problem is he doesn't have a great bat coming after him in the cleanup spot so in a crunch situation any opposing manager with an IQ above room temp is going to make sure Goldschmidt draws an intentional walk.

Posted by: Donna &&&&&& V. (brandishing ampersands) at July 26, 2015 10:36 PM (+XMAD)

171 Although like Trout, Harper is young. And when he's on, he's on.

Look, I don't doubt Trout, but Harper is something too.

173 Harper is the youngest with still the greatest upside potential. But he is a little immature in his attitude. He's what Josh Hamilton would have been without the drug problems.

Giancarlo (Mike) Stanton is an awesome physical specimen, but he can be pitched to. Nice guy, too.

Trout is both a remarkable outfielder and a tremendous offensive player. I think that MLB wants to make him the "face of the game" because he comes across as a very likeable person.

The kid Pederson with the Dodgers could become a great player if he could make more contact and cut down on his strikeouts.

I remember the 79 team that won the WS and the 90-92 team that tore my heart out (especially 1992, ugh). I also remember the 20+ years of sub .500 baseball. Pretty much stopped caring after a while. Now that they are winning again, its....odd. Anyway, glad they are doing quite well.

Pederson reminds of Gorman Thomas, the Brewers slugger in the 1980's. Thomas said fans showed up to see him to do one or all of the following: hit a HR, strike out, and smash into the outfield wall and he always tried to oblige them. Mark Reynolds (now with the Cards) has the same approach - I remember he was always either striking out or launching a bomb into the second deck.

I used to know a woman at work whose husband was from St. Louis and he was a diehard Card fan. They would go to St. Louis for Christmas and one of his relatives there belonged to the same church as the Pujols family.

Around 2009 or 2010 or so, this church put on some sort of children's Christmas pageant and the Pujols Down syndrome kid was given a very small part - it entailed just standing on the stage carrying a banner or something. My coworker said the poor girl came out on stage looked at the crowd - and began shaking. She cried out "Daddy! I'm scared!" and Albert was up there in a flash. He picked her up and carried her offstage, with a stricken expression on his face.

My coworker was as big a Brewer fan as I am, but she said she couldn't hate Albert after that - every time he stepped up to the plate, she remembered him carrying that scared child offstage.

Nope, use the same nic I do here. If you see post-game threads when the Mets one, I'm always the one who puts up the "Another Win For Milos!" GIF

The guy who puts up the "Metsband" comments is great

242 239 "The other times I get annoyed with the other AA commenters is when a thread turns into "Tulo Talk" "

It's a Mets' related blog version of the Donald Trump debate.

I got pissed off at some of them for cheering on the hijacking of the ask the commissioner hashtag on Twitter with a lot of vulgar shit about the Wilpons (who I can't stand either) that made Mets fans look like total assholes.

The Wilpons are a huge problem, but there's not much that can be done about them and reading nonstop bitching about them doesn't provide me with any insights into the game

Ahh, now I recognize you. Love that GIF.

I'd tell you my nic but it's top secret. All I can say is that I live in the DC area and I'm a Mets fan. A DC Mets Fan, if you will.

245 Well , after the shellacking Big Papi and the Sox just gave my Tigers, I guess I will be going full Nationals. After all, Nats got our best 2 pitchers. I miss you Max! Oh and ESPN coverage- I don't tune in to watch your commentators for 2/3 of the game.

The ONT is around, if you want to deal with it

247 Cubs are going to bounce back the next three games. They should be able to sweep the Rockies.
Rockies have a decent defense especially the infield, about an average offense, and absolutely no pitching to speak of.

248 At least six people (and probably many, many more) who were raised in homosexual households like Moira Grayland, wrote amicus briefs to the Supreme Court against gay marriage before its ruling.

249 183 my team sucks butt. But I got to see (or listen to) one of the greatest team ever assembled - the Big Red Machine of '75-'76 win back-to-back World Series when I was 9-10 years old and a huge baseball fan.

Back then, you maybe got to see your team play on TV a couple times a month, but the infamous WLW broadcast every game with a signal that could be heard well up into Canada and as far south as Florida. Magical times for a young kid who loved baseball and emulating his heroes in the backyard in endless emulations of his favorite team

I remember a Monday night game on ABC during the summer, and a Saturday afternoon game on NBC. That was it until we got cable in the late 70's and we got WTCG (later WTBS) and the Braves games. It was at that point I would be able to see the Reds actually play every season more than 1 or 2 games.

Then, in the 80's, WGN started on our cable system, and I got another slate of Reds' games. Sadly that all ended when both got rid of the games. Luckily, I then got DirectTv and their MLB package, and I then could watch about 150 Reds games a season. Now I have the online package and it is the best thing in the world.
