McConnell And Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid Team Up To Save Ex-Im Bank And Planned Parenthood

Mitch McConnell swears he totes opposed to saving the crony Ex-Im Bank. He's just making it possible for big government Republicans and Democrats to save it.

The Majority Leader is pleased.

Ted Cruz, no as much.

And how does this save the baby parts traffickers at Planned Parenthood? Well, Rand Paul wanted to offer an amendment to the highway bill to defund federal spending on Planned Parenthood.

“The continued disregard and disrespect for human life at Planned Parenthood, a partially taxpayer-funded organization, is shocking and appalling,” Mr. Paul said.

“Recent video revelations, involving potentially criminal activity, make it more obvious than ever that this organization has absolutely zero respect for the sanctity of human life and is an affront to the most basic human dignity enshrined in our founding documents. Not one more taxpayer dollar should go to Planned Parenthood and I intend to make that goal a reality,” he said.

McConnell however has put the procedural fix in to save the donor largess and the baby parts traffickers:

The actual bill the Senate has taken up, HR 22, is not actually a highway bill, and so once the Senate votes to proceed to the bill (on Friday, most likely), McConnell will propose an amendment to add the highway legislative text. Originally, McConnell wrote this amendment as a "substitute amendment," which it really is. But at some point this week, he changed the amendment so that it would be a "perfecting amendment."

The paper amendment filed has the word "substitute" crossed out, and the word "perfecting" penciled in.

The relevant difference here: If it were technically a substitute amendment, many amendments could be made to the substitute bill. If the Boeing senators added Ex-Im renewal, conservatives could respond with an amendment actually reforming Ex-Im, such as capping its size, shortening the duration or curbing how much of its financing could go to one exporter.

But with a perfecting amendment, typically only one amendment is allowed unless there is unanimous consent for more. McConnell has determined that one amendment will be the Boeing senators' Ex-Im amendment.

Now I'm sure Team GOP will bemoan Cruz's comparison of McConnell and Reid but how exactly would this have been handled differently with a Democratic majority?

You know whose fault this is? Donald Trump!

While McConnell has personally spoken against Ex-Im reauthorization, Democrats said in June he had agreed to schedule an Ex-Im vote in order to get highly divisive trade legislation passed.

McConnell at the time denied that any deal had been made, and Cruz said the same assurance was given in a private Republican conference meeting. "Like Saint Peter, he repeated it three times," Cruz said Friday.

McConnell spokesman Don Stewart declined to comment on Cruz's remarks.

I agree, they have to go. All of them. But before you yell "Hell Yea!" - are you willing to take significant losses in doing so? These losses may mean losing the majority in the House and Senate. Perhaps even the WH. Worst case, the democraps get all three. Ask yourself if you are all in with that scenario.

I am. Honestly I fail to see how things would play out differently except for the amount of time before we are truly in the crapper.

I'm still in with AllenG - burn it, salt it, scatter it. Only way through (not out) this problem would be building a viable 3rd (4th? 5th) opposition party. And this will take time (and losses) to build.

The Texas Republican said his staff at the time told him that McConnell is "lying to you," but Cruz suggested that he took the Republican leader at his word.

"What I told my staff that afternoon, I said, well I don't know if that's the case or not. But I don't see how when the majority leader looks me in the eyes and makes an explicit promise," he added. "I don't see how I cannot take him at his word."

I think 95+% of the politicians on "both sides" are opportunistic, Ted Baxter types who are driven entirely by what their staff and consultants tell them polling and focus grouping says they should say / feel/ act.

I think they all put on a big show for us, but are just unprincipled hacks out to trick us in to giving them a seat in DC where they can run their own little fiefdoms of power and corruption... then eventually cash out with a lobbying firm or whatnot and live off that.

So if the "culture" and "media" were pushing a more free-market oriented "norm" I think the R's and many D's would be pushing that.

They just think that socialism is what enough people want to get them elected, and that's it. Plus the donors all have their hands out, so you have to help the cronies.

And people like us? Eh... fuck 'em.

Reagan chose Bush for similar reasons. It was a mistake. Reagan could have won without Bush. Reagan had some blind spots -- he really didn't understand intra-party corruption. He was an outwardly visionary president, not a reformist. The first George Bush should have been consigned to the dustbin of some ambassadorship and maybe we would have been spared the endless sorry litany of Bushes.

Hey y'all, is this a thing? I did a Wayback Machine search on John Russell Hauser's TeaPartyNation page and it came back with a two crawl - both dated earlier this morning.

To try to compare, I did searches for some other random users at TPN whose profiles I got from their comments, and found that they all had multiple crawls on their pages, some going all the way back to 2009.

Is that a thing, like, somebody was hacking in and creating a post-dated profile for this guy, or is this just a random statistical occurrence relating to the way the Wayback Machine operates?

I've come to peace with a Bernie Sanders / Liz Warren / Hillary Clinton presidency with D majorities in both chambers.

I look at it this way: the R's are not going to change the status quo. They're just trying to get their piece of the DC pie for themselves.

The D's are full speed ahead "progressing" in to Utopia.

I, personally, believe Math will become a factor at some point. I would prefer to not live under socialism, but it doesn't seem that voting one way or another is going to change that fact.

So, I guess I may as well just wait for Math to catch up, and stop letting the R's lie to my face and expect me to just suck it up and take it. Because, fuck them.

In Missouri, the latest is a Democrat Senator who is being accused of trying to sex up a couple interns. We had a Republican about 2 months ago who had the same thing happen. So far the Dem hasn't yet resigned...

I think if there's money to be had (as in Washington), it attracts people who want money. If there are underaged children to sex up, then folks like Bill Clinton head to Pedo Island. Here is Missouri, the legislature has always had the tradition of high school students going to Jeff City to intern there. That tradition obviously includes various legislators using the system to cherry-pick whatever type of teenager most tickles their fancy.

2008 was tres complicated.

Kind of a perfect storm.

Glass Steigel being repealed opened the doors to a lot of money that investment banks now had access too and wanted to invest.

Community Reinvestment Act (going back to Carter, then renewed by Clinton) forced banks to loan money to, er, previously "red-lined" areas and to people who may not have had the credit history to normally get a loan.

Banks, in an attempt to get rich quick, sold the shitty loans to Fannie and Freddie (so the govt was on the hook for these shit loans, ultimately), then rebought and re bundled the derivatives of said loans, got a AAA rating from the corrupt credit agencies, and sold these "toxic" assets all over the world.

So who is to blame there?

Well, everyone.

Everyone except for me and the majority of US taxpayers, who ultimately had to pay to unwind that mess. Which, by the way, is coming back.

subprime mortgages and NINJA loans are making a stealthy comeback, and are even more backed by / guaranteed by govt then they used to be. So we will have another round of this soon.

254 It only took two years of Democratic rule to destroy the economy, and only two years of having Republicans run the house to get it going again.

The Democratic Congress lost 2 million more jobs between 2007 and 2010 (8 Million) than the preceding Republican Congress created 2001-2006 (6 Million). I haven't checked but I will bet that holds the record for losses since the Great Depression.

Conversely, the Republican House has presided over an almost 10 Million job increase since 2011.

So combining the two figures, Republicans +16M jobs, Democrats -8M.

Posted by: Ed Anger at July 24, 2015 11:49 AM (RcpcZ)

"crawls" are how search engines and archivers discover and organize webpages, in the simplest terms.

They hit the webpage, pull the meta information (and the full page in the case of the wayback machine), and archive it.

So they might "crawl' the page once a year, or more often if it's a more popular page.

I'm not 100% sure how WayBack specifically works, but in a generic sense thats what "crawling" is.

I think it originally referred to spiders and webs and there was some nerdy joke behind it.

Posted by: hurricane567 at July 24, 2015 08:59 PM (SU9On)

325 Seriously. I have never voted anything but Republican my whole life, yet I no longer register as a Republican.

Why? Because of shit like this. The last straw was Obambi's attempted immigration amnesty. Obama's fecklessness about thousands of central american "young people" streaming into our country. I called the GOP and complained. I called my senators and reprentatives and insisted they tell tell me what their stand is on immigration. All I got was "no comment."

Now, when the GOP calls me I say, "You told me you had 'no comment' on Obama's immigration crap, so I am telling you 'no money, and no vote.'"

Why doesn't the GOP get it? All we want is the rule of law. We want to maintain our own national identity, values, language, and culture. What's so wrong with that?

Why is it racist when WE want to maintain these things, but when other culures want to celebrate and maintain their own heritage, it's not racist?

We, the American people, are so tired of arbitrary implementation of our laws, and we are also tired of being called racist simply because we expect others to follow the law.
