Seattles $15 minimum wage law is supposed to lift workers out of poverty and move them off public assistance. But there may be a hitch in the plan.
Evidence is surfacing that some workers are asking their bosses for fewer hours as their wages rise in a bid to keep overall income down so they dont lose public subsidies for things like food, child care and rent. Posted by: Nevergiveup at July 22, 2015 08:33 PM (DUoqb) 19

Some restaurants have tacked on a 15 percent surcharge to cover the higher wages. And some managers are no longer encouraging customers to tip, leading to a redistribution of income. Workers in the back of the kitchen, such as dishwashers and cooks, are getting paid more, but servers who rely on tips are seeing a pay cut.

GOP presidential contender and real estate mogul Donald Trump wants to live in the White House but hes planning to be buried on a golf course his own.
The flamboyant billionaire has received approval to build a private cemetery at the Trump National Golf Club, a swanky 36 hole course located in Bedminster, NJ, the Fox Business Network has learned. A spokesman for Trump Ed Russo confirmed the plans for the private cemetery after Fox Business received information from members who said that ground crews had been taking initial steps to build a mausoleum for Trump on the grounds of the club. NGU, if you're still here, I get it that maybe your standard of comparison is New York Effing City, but you really think Padres tickets/parking/food are "cheap"? Baseball used to be, relatively, cheap - for the "big" leagues, compared to other "big" leagues. NFL - hell, the AFL, here back then - was quite expensive, always. But - 8 home games (actually, think it used to be 6, and pre-season was just 1 or 2 - someone correct me, I'm talking about 60s/70s/80s). Anyway, I find the Padres' prices ridiculous, and am happy to say I've almost never paid for a seat (have gone in "free" or corporate-free-to-me seats). And hadn't gone to a game in years until a few months back - but that was only because *deep* discounted ticket, which came as a package to watch a friend's son's high school game at Petco. Don't know how the Padres survive, financially. Guess it has to do with TV rights and advertising, whatever. But San Diego is infamous (in a great way) for being hard on spectator team sports. Especially for day games of any kind, far too many other/better things to do. And perfect weather 95% of the time to do them in. Until the big population growth of the 1980s, even a hot San Diego team could see mediocre attendance, which I find good and hilarious. Posted by: rhomboid at July 22, 2015 09:00 PM (QDnY+) 113
That doesn't sound even slightly historically accurate.
I dunno. Tut was Akhenaten's successor (or nearly so) and there was an awful lot of turmoil in the Egyptian court at the time as the priests clawed back the power they had lost under the Heretic King. I know some folks have claimed Tut was murdered, but I don't know how solid the evidence for that actually is. Posted by: Grey Fox at July 22, 2015 09:01 PM (a42f0) 114
Ann Coulter's book on the subject is AWEsome ("Slander" or "Libel" can't remember which).
Posted by: Aslan's Girl She also goes over McCarthy's heroism in "Treason: Liberal Treachery from the Cold War to the War on Terror" using the Venona papers as supporting documents. Of course, to read a public school history textbook, you'd think the Venona papers didn't exist because they still say the same bullshit about "witch hunts" and "red scares". McCarthy went after commies.
He then became a drunkard and a bully and went after guys like George C. Marshall and 20-something associates at law firms who were commies in college, but at that point clearly weren't. At that point, he became more a liability in the fight against communism than an asset. Posted by: Jack Woltz at July 22, 2015 09:03 PM (bAx8v) 118

Uh, no. McCarthy was a great man that butt-hurt, revisionist progs demonized. They hated that he outed all the Commies. Ann Coulter's book on the subject is AWEsome ("Slander" or "Libel" can't remember which). Rick Perry shows he takes prog's word for it that McCarthy was evil. To me, immigration is the most important issue in the campaign. Only Trump is saying what I want to hear, and he's saying it loudly and clearly. Of interest is that Bush and Rubio have fouled their own pants on the issue, and to the extent Trump's message resonates with the public, it will inevitably hurt them. Even if Trump implodes, he's marked them as the enemy of those opposed to amnesty and colonization, and a lot of people are going to remember that. Besides which, as Lincoln said, "I can't spare this man. He fights."

Call Trump a clown all you want. What I just saw was incredible. Anderson trying to defend McCain brought up all of these wonderful bills that he either sponsored or helped passed and Trump just rattled off statistics on how they all failed and how most of these bills were done to take the heat off of Obama, He just blasted McCain and Obama. The dude just smashed both of them. I like and appreciate what Trumps doing. On the one hand, the right populist demagogue could pull it out. Not sure Trump is that person, but the right one could do it. On the other hand, we'd see what legislation by executive order really means, because such a person would be lucky to even get a cabinet approved, much less laws passed.
If he was strong enough mentally, the FU he could send to Congress would be epic. Posted by: rickb223 at July 22, 2015 09:42 PM (SeGk7) 223

JackStraw, don't disagree - obviously in something like this there are various wheels turning. I just think that of all the major "issues" to the bulk of the country, the "most important/least well addressed" category winner is illegal immigration. A Dem Party (clearly already off the rails and well outside the arc of all American history) that stands in unison in the House chamber to applaud a foreign president slandering an American state beset by desperate crime problems directly caused by that president's lawless/predatory behavior. A GOP .... just highlights: Dubya's catastrophic 2006 amnesty gambit, Rubio's incredible amnesty debacle, and the GOPe's/Boehner's absurd post-2012 election musings on, yep, amnesty. What people forget is that Perot was dead on target with the important issues of his day and provided non-nonsense talk about the budget. (Sigh -- remember when worrying about the budget deficit was a bipartisan issue.)
That said Perot was a self-important loon and so is Trump. But rather than dismissing all the people who are listening to him as idiots, figure out their issues -- immigration and a supine Republican party seem like two of the big ones -- and address them and invite them to support your candidate without insulting them. This shrill denunciation of Trump and, more so, those who listen to him is of no benefit to the party. It is, in fact, solidifying support for the single-payer, big government, Hillary Clinton, crony capitalism advocate and self-proclaimed democrat Trump because he is hammering on a part of immigration -- crimes be illegal immigrants *released from custody* -- that even folks who sympathize with some illegal aliens can get behind. He won't be the nominee and the tone from some quarters is going to convince his current supporters to sit home instead of vote for the eventual Republican nominee. 352 "Cruz voted for the "free trade" thing AND the Iran nuke thing but noone seems to remember either"
The reason "noone seems to remember" is that it never happened. Cruz voted AGAINST the TPA and was one of two Senators who offered amendments to block the Iran legislation. Ultimately, only Cotton voted against it but Cruz was out of town when they took the vote, hence the 99 vote talley. Had he been there, he would most certainly have voted with Cotton. Trump. Rocking the boat, making waves, rabble rouser, kicking over rice bowls, putting knickers in a twist, turd in the punchbowl...

Anyone else remember the grass roots political chess plan in 2008 that promised Reagan II in 2012?

Donald Trump is NOT a cancer.
Don't give him that much credit. A boil, maybe, or a really annoying cyst... Posted by: Richard McEnroe at July 22, 2015 11:47 PM (Kucy5) 429
Oh, can't you see them running scared, I've hitched my wagon to a wreckin' machine!
His hair's the worst that you've seen! Perry says he's too meeeeaaannnnnn! Oww! Might as well Trump, Trump! Might as well Trump! Go ahead and Trump, Trump! Go ahead and Trump! Meh... that's all I've got right now. Posted by: Prothonotary Warbler at July 22, 2015 11:54 PM (wKc1L) 430
Even though during the Reagan years I was an enthusiastic card carrying office holding Democrat.
In fairness, most Texans through the eighties were Democrats. The election battles were between conservative Democrats and somewhat less conservative Democrats. Republicans often chose not to run candidates for local or statewide office, and some very conservative rural west Texas counties still didn't field Republican candidates until just a few years ago. Heck, I voted for Democrat Senator Lloyd Bentsen in 1992, and I was a full-blown conservative by then. I haven't voted for a Democrat since. The big change happened in Texas after Reagan was elected and the Democrats began to lurch to the left. For the first time in history, it became okay to be a Republican and conservative Democrars disappeared. Even then, the change didn't happen overnight. People don't get that Texas was democrat right up into the early 90's. Do you think a Republican state would have elected LBJ and Ann Richards?

396 Prescient11 Yes, Aslan's Girl has a fan club of Morons. Perry needs to read more. Just like most pilots, trying to get by on charm, good looks, and killing coyotes. Well, maybe not the last one. Posted by: NaCly Dog at July 22, 2015 10:57 PM (u82oZ) I do? I had no idea... thanks for the comment, means a lot. As for that darn Perry... I used to love him. Now, he's just a huge (or "yuge") disappointment. Thank God for Trump (and I mean that sincerely). Posted by: Aslan's Girl at July 23, 2015 08:25 AM (xetep) Processing 0.03, elapsed 0.0399 seconds. |
