Did the White House Farm the Rolling Stone Fake-Rape Jackie Story to Rollling Stone?

From once and future Congressional candidate Mike Flynn, my own answer here is by a qualified yes, and that qualification is "of course it was, dummy."

The Obama administration disclosed Tuesday it first learned about Rolling Stone’s ill-fated story on campus rape in Sept. 2014, about two months before it was published, when reporter Sabrina Rubin Erdely called seeking information on the government’s investigation of the University of Virginia’s handling of sexual assaults.

The revelation from the Department of Education came the same day that a media watchdog group asked congressional oversight committees to start an investigation into what the administration may have known about the story before and after it was published and what it did to address the concerns raised in the article.

"The larger question we raise regards the role of public officials: Was this contrived, indeed fabricated story, part of an orchestrated power grab over U.S. universities by administration officials intent on using a major publication as a political weapon?" the Institute on Government and Media Integrity wrote in a letter to Rep. John Kline, Minnesota Republican and House Education and the Workforce Committee chairman, and Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., the chairman of the Senate education committee.

The request could open the door for Congress to obtain access to documents that have also been sought by news reporters but so far have not been released.

White House officials who talked to The Washington Times on Tuesday said the administration had virtually no involvement in the story except to arrange a short interview between an Education Department official and Rolling Stone, which was supposed to be limited to a broad discussion about Title IX investigations and the Office of Civil Rights ongoing inquiry into UVa.

Oh is that all?

"In response to the [Rolling Stone] reporter’s inquiry, the press office arranged an interview with Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Catherine Lhamon for Sept. 24, 2014. The interview focused on what it means to be under Title IX compliance review by the OCR. That was our only participation in the reporting of the Rolling Stone story, other than some fact checking about Title IX investigations once the story was written and ready for print. We did not suggest any other people for the reporter to talk to, and she did not tell us who she had interviewed for her story," the department said in a statement to The Times.

Read on to see the White House distancing itself from Rhenda, claiming she's just a gal from around the neighborhood.

22 IIRC, Lhamon was told and there may be emails on this, that no specific questions could be asked about UVA because of the various privacy laws. I presume, as does everyone else, that she totally did.

There is a very devastating comment in Eramo's lawyers response to Rolling Stone claiming that UVA vouched for the story that Emily Renda "was not working closely with Dean Eramo on sexual assault cases, she did not - and has never - had access to University sexual assault case information in any capacity, and Dean Eramo did not participate in providing Renda or Rolling Stone facts to support this false and reckless story."

Source: http://bit.ly/1VkOoEx

That raises allll kinds of interesting questions about Emily Renda's role in this.

Because they want a "grassroots outcry" to an OUTRAGE!!! to expand title ix to cover kangaroo rape courts.

Why? I don't know. It's not totally apparent yet.

But the left likes to throw out these anecdotal events as if they're common place, then the media gets in full drive by mode, then next thing you know the administration is "forced to respond" and... there you have it.

Whether it's campus rape, guns, #blacklifesmatter ... whatever

Emily Renda, a UVa. graduate and adviser to the university on sexual assault issues, first disclosed the story of a student named “Jackie” during congressional testimony in the summer of 2014. She then introduced the woman (and four others) to Ms. Erdely, who made the victim’s account the primary focus of her article in Nov. 2014, according to court filings by the magazine.

35 I have introduced legislation that says that all Department of Education employees are deemed to not be under subpoena to testify to the Senate Education Committee about the Rolling Stone article.

However--and this is the good part--the Senate can override this by passing a bill specifying which particular employees will be excluded from being deemed not to be under subpoena.

This is why it's very important to elect a GOP President and have a veto-proof majority in both houses of Congress!

Yes, too lazy to check myself, but did Gen. Odierno get a good knocking around in the news dump thread about his criticism on Iraq only surfacing now, when he's leaving?

Sounds like he might have been exactly the general officer who needed to resign with a flurry and go public - and more aggressively than he did in this interview - when it might (*might*) have done some good. There's been a lot of reasonable grumbling here and elsewhere that, notwithstanding the insane and unbelievable foreign policy and national security debacles the last few years, not a single senior career officer or official of note has done this.

Right. That was the original DC connection. Jackies case was one of several highlighted in front of congress for the WE HAVE TO DO SOMETHING!!!! kabuki theater.

Because Erderly, like a good reporter, admits to having a "narrative" and set out to find a story. So she, naturally, asked people in DC and in alum organizations for major colleges if they knew of any.

And thus the road led to Jackie.

A former UVa student who is now some kind of rape expert (i don't know) was called to testify in front of congress about college rape and she relayed Jackies horrifying story (and 2 or 3 others) to our congresscritters, who used said testimony to push their phony 1 out of 4 college chicks are raped narrative.

Tied in to the war on women and all that.

The Greek system is the last vestige of entrenched conservatism in academia. Ergo, it must be eliminated, especially the fraternities, because white conservative males. You'll notice that out of all of the college athletes that get accused of sexual assault, that wasn't a topic. Because most of them are from a protected class (see Duke Lacrosse for the exception).

Burn the Witch, dunno. Only a passing personal familiarity with Odierno, but he and many of the others I'm talking about are not really products of a gramscian environment. We're talking individual integrity here. Which, when its absence is projected over a whole civic culture, produces such things as Gov. Pence on the RFRA and Gov. Haley on the CBF, among thousands of other bigger and smaller things. But maybe I'm misconstruing what you're saying.

I think the "it took a life of its own" part is sort of accurate. There are different factions on the Left as there obviously are on the Right. while loosely allied, they all don't have the same agenda and sometimes they work at cross purposes. Just because the SJWs at the universities want one thing and will find like-minded people at the US Dept. of Ed. to help them doesn't mean that particular thing is popular on other sectors of the Left.

Jackie is, IMO, a player in the Squirrels!11!! Shiny Stuff!!!11! Brigade. Her "story" inflames the base -- those who always need a fresh victim to slobber over -- and distracts what little opposition there is to the current regime.

Said opposition works itself into a lather and opines brilliantly about the travesty of the whole thing, while the regime continues to go on its merry way with Really Important Stuff that we should be attending to.

Like, you know, Iranian nukes, terrorism, the porosity of the border, dealings with our enemies, etc., etc., etc.

It's a damn effective strategy.

Plus, Iran is saying now that of course they're going to continue to be big state sponsors of terrorism, because hey that's just how they roll. And now, thanks to Barry's "deal," they'll have an extra $150 billion or so to help fund all their various terrorist enterprises around the globe.

ThunderB, I don't think these intra-mural fissures result in any "devouring", in the critical *practical* sense.

Yep, a few years back someone on LA County SWAT told me his office could not believe the level of tension and violence in contested black/Hispanic "territories" - he likened it to a war zone waiting to happen.

And yet, do you think the repugnant freakshow that is the CA Dem Party has to worry - even think about - robotically vacuuming up almost all black and Hispanic votes? Nope.

It's one of the many disconnects. The president of the party that still depends mightily on organized labor can brazenly and obviously without any good reason block one of the largest capital projects in years (Keystone), wtihout any consequences.

"The

Of course, Zeta Beta Tau is a protected class as it's a Jewish fraternity so nothing will happen to them. I'm not sure if it's a reflection on how these students were raised to view the soldiers protecting the US and Israel at huge personal cost, or if it the frat used to foster further anti-frat sentiment with conservative/middle class voters as the target of the propaganda.

I previously lived in a neighborhood that had been a black neighborhood, then became a Mexican / Guatemalan neighborhood, and was slowly transitioning in to a gentrified white neighborhood.

I've never met more racist, hateful people in my life than some of my spanish neighbors. The Mexicans hate the Guatemalans (and vice versa), and both hate the Puerto Ricans... but all 3 groups HATE black people.

Spanish kids and black kids would tussle in the street for no reason with regularity.

Both groups seemed happy with their white neighbors though.

But its so funny to me that thats the reality on the ground, yet the sequestered white liberals who live in all white gated communities have the balls to call ME and US racist xenophobe haters, when, uh...

Come live in my old neighborhood for 6 months. Might change your opinion. Go hang out at the local high school for a few weeks.

160 This is one area I know that the Obama administration has planned out: they have pre-packaged responses and scandals ready to roll out on command. The type of reaction, talking points, press coverage etc of events like the Ferguson shooting and so many recent events were clearly prepped. All they were waiting for was the event, the responses and comments are all cued up.

Look at the Zimmerman news story; they fired that off all prepared then were knocked on their heels by finding out he was Hispanic. They have lots of these ready to roll just when they need it, and have people watching for what they can use to play out the skit.

And its why when some big event that they don't have scripted out happens, they are so hapless. They don't know how to genuinely respond, because everything is about political control and organizing the base. That's all they know.

Rude and inconsiderate? yes.

"hating vets"?

Uh... Come on. They were fratdogs partying for spring break at a spring break destination in a hotel.

I think they were just being their usual obnoxious drunken 21 year old selves.

Plus of course, the nice Spanish speaking guys who mow their lawns. Well, they know they exist at least. They only speak with the gringo boss. They'd never, like, interact with them or give them a glass of water or let them use the bathroom or anything because, ew, gross.

Yet from their little cloistered worlds they tell the other 300 million of us that we're horrible racist sexist bigoted people and that we should try to be more like THEM.

*yawn*
Trump's a loud-mouthed, arrogant,unbearable, pig-ignorant, over-generalizing,alienating,show-boating a--h-le
The Republican establishment is made upentirelyof loud-mouthed, arrogant, unbearable pig-ignorant, over-generalizing, alienating, show-boating a--h-les.
I refuse to back one or the other because they'rean loud-mouthed, arrogant, unbearable, pig-ignorant, over-generalizing,alienating, show-boating a--h-le for "my side".
A liability is a liability is a liability, and just cause a blown horse can get you "somewhere" doesn't mean you're going to get where you want to go. At some point it's going to give and you'll be up sh-t creek without a paddle.
I refuse to involve myself in the circular (hexagonal? Nonagonal?) firing squad.

Wake me up when the primaries are done.

347 I vote for the first candidate who introduces his slate of special prosecutors along with his (or her) Cabinet.

Obama's Cabinet, and a substantial body of his sub-Cabinet appointees, and probably the former Chief Executive himself, need to spend the next twenty years locked up in Guantanamo.

And, as your next President, I pledge to reopen it for that purpose even if the current shit shuts it down.

I have a wager of honor here with a Perry supporter in which I bet Perry would actually do worse this time, in votes and primaries won, than he did in 2012*.

Looking like a pretty safe bet. Think he drops out before New Hampshire.

Sci-Fi shouldn't have made the sequels. The original "Sharknado" was already a cult classic in it's own time. The sequels take a lot of that away.
