10 FYI

A Navy officer and a Marine fired their sidearms hoping to kill or subdue the gunman who murdered five service members last week in Chattanooga, Tennessee, according to multiple military officials familiar with internal reporting on the tragedy.

It remains unclear whether either hit Muhammad Abdulazeez, who was shot and killed on July 16 after he gunned down four Marines and a sailor at the Navy Operational Support Center in Chattanooga. It's also unclear why they were armed, as it is against Defense Department policy for anyone other than military police or law enforcement to carry weapons on federal property.

A report distributed among senior Navy leaders during the shooting's aftermath said Lt. Cmdr. Timothy White, the support center's commanding officer, used his personal firearm to engage Abdulazeez, Navy Times confirmed with four separate sources. A Navy official also confirmed a Washington Post report indicating one of the slain Marines may have been carrying a 9mm Glock and possibly returned fire on the gunman.

Not exactly correct. It specifies if you have been deemed not competent to handle your own affairs. What is new is the SA admin is making the determination here and not the courts, although somebody else had to make the not competent call.

Something else I read at another site which I don't know if it is true or not, but they have said returning vets from the ME are being automatically deemed "not competent". I have not been able to verify that.

60 Has anybody wondered why leftism seems to be flourishing in the midst of insanely high global debt?

I believe that the central bank policies are primarily the reason. Perpetual zero percent interest rates encourage governments to borrow to pay for lavish entitlements (to perpetuate politicians staying in office) and lavish entitlements encourage even more lavish entitlements because once people start getting free shit, they demand more free shit. And there is no limit on how much people can demand - it's human nature.

Now the question is why. Why are the central banks so interested in promoting massive government debt - globally? One could just about get carried away in conspiracy theories. You know the ones, the ones that are so much theory as they are reality.

You don't need conspiracy theories, because the actual answer is fairly simple: bread and circuses.

To quote the old senator dude in Gladiator "Rome is the mob."

As long as people can still eat and have their entertainments, they don't actually care very much about other policies or their effects. So central banks (which are very tightly tied to central governments) make sure the money flows freely because it keeps the mob happy. The mob stays happy because their supply of Cheetos, beer, and TV/movies are is not threatened.

73 To be honest, I don't want someone who's so out of it that they can't keep track of their finances (pay bills on time, write a check, deposit money etc.) having a gun.

What's bad about this is that there's no judicial oversight. No where to go for appeal.

And you might have someone taking care of your bills because you're sick or incapacitated physically.

That's different and there should be a way to appeal that ruling.

It's like the no fly list. Nothing wrong with that but you can't find out if you're on it until you try to fly. and you can't appeal it or find out why you're on it if you know you're on it.

All this star chamber shit and secret courts is what cranks my antenna. This is not what this country was founded on.

We can disagree about how to secure our selves but no way should their be secret laws and courts and being forced to be silent about what the government's doing.

Thanks GW.

F*ck that. No where in the 2nd amendment does it mention "keep[ing] track of their finances."

What's bad about this is that there's no judicial oversight. No where to go for appeal it's unconstitutional.

FIFY.

That's different and there should be a way to appeal that ruling.

No, it's not - not to a bureaucracy. And there shouldn't be a "ruling" in the first place.

It's like the no fly list. Nothing wrong with that but you can't find out if you're on it until you try to fly. and you can't appeal it or find out why you're on it if you know you're on it.

No, it's not. There is no Right to Fly either in the natural rights of man or protected by the constitution.

Because being armed was the default assumption, then many incidents would not occur. Neither would criminals be so numerous or take the risks that they do.

Death IS a deterrent if meted out quickly and on the spot. This can only occur if citizens are armed.

But of course this would never get anywhere so the best we can hope for is plenty of options to take the grabbers to court.

Indirect cost manipulation is the oldest trick in the book though.

Take a certain University in a town that begins with Mi.
They were working on a new drug to help with transplant rejection. MALG. You can't charge for the drug beyond what it costs to produce per FDA rules for unapproved drugs.
It worked so well that trials expanded, UM could barely keep up.
So they decided "cost to produce" included a brand spanking new research building and upped the price accordingly. Eventually the FDA caught up to them, but only because of a clusterfuck of other problems (idiots not using the right consent forms, a program director embezzling tons of money.)

Who said: "Two vast and trunkless towers of bling
Stand in the city...Near them, on the pavement,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose hairpiece,
And wrinkled tie, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on those lifeless things,
The voice that Fired! them, and the polls he lead:
And on the pedestal these words appear:
'My name is Trump, king of deals:
Look on my works, ye Republicans, and despair!'
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of Jeb's colossal wreck, feckless and bare
The lone and level polling stretches far away."

172 Southerner-hating commenters rejoice!

On attacking Confederate monuments and the state of Georgia, there?s the polite way and the not-so-polite way.

Our AJC colleague Katie Leslie reports the Atlanta City Council passed a resolution asking Gov. Nathan Deal to study how to add to Stone Mountain:[Councilman Michael Julian] Bond, who described the relief of Confederate generals as ?art,? said he doesn?t believe it should be sandblasted off the face of the mountain. Instead, state leaders should explore adding others to the carving who reflect Georgia?s broader history, he said, such as James Oglethorpe, President Jimmy Carter or Dr. Martin Luther King ....

And Creative Loafing reports that Valdosta activist Mark George, of the Mary Turner Project, filed a 37-page civil rights complaint with the U.S. Department of Justice against Deal and the General Assembly becauseGeorgians (3 million of whom are black) are having their tax revenue used to celebrate and glorify the failed Confederacy, a treasonous government that A) espoused the racial supremacy of white people and B) sought to preserve and expand the enslavement of black people.?

I think a lot of them flat-out misunderstand their oaths. They believe they are swearing loyalty and duty to the government, when, in fact, they are swearing loyalty and duty to the Constitution and/or to the People.

So they get bad orders (not necessarily illegal ones, but ones they see will have bad effects) and believe their oaths bind them to obey those bad orders instead of speaking out in protection of the Constitution and the People.

PETA does not have a position on the abortion issue, because our focus as an organization is the alleviation of the suffering inflicted on nonhuman animals. There are people on both sides of the abortion issue in the animal rights movement, just as there are people on both sides of animal rights issues in the pro-life movement. And just as the pro-life movement has no official position on animal rights, neither does the animal rights movement have an official position on abortion.

She may look daggers at you, or maybe not. If she doesn't want to talk about that maybe you can suggest that to the HR Dept.

Also, pray for her peace and happiness. People who are4 happy are not complaining about the stomach growls of their co-workers.

365 Or here's another approach.

My friend was going to serve at this first church. He's moving into the parsonage the first day and the first person that greets he and his family is some large German woman who (was the treasurer) and said as her first thing, "You can't have any money to spend on the parsonage this year.!" Oooooookay and hello to you too. He didn't say that. After that she made his life difficult about any bit of money he wanted reimbursement for and did it in the brashest way possible. He started praying, "Lord, remove this thorn from my side." Eventually she dropped dead of a heart attack. Obviously he wasn't praying that the thorn be removed in that manner, and I think her high stress level didn't help her medical condition, but there you go.

I have never used this approach with difficult co-workers and am not actually recommending it. ;^)

ThinkGeek dot com has little units that emit various noises randomly. Quiet enough to just distract. Often enough to drive nuts.

430 "A Navy official also confirmed a Washington Post report indicating one of the slain Marines may have been carrying a 9mm Glock and possibly returned fire on the gunman."

A scandal. We need a congressional investigation immediately. We can't have Marines carrying sidearms against DOD policy and defending themselves and others. It sends all the wrong messages.

435 To be honest, I don't want someone who's so out of
it that they can't keep track of their finances (pay bills on time,
write a check, deposit money etc.) having a gun.

What's bad about this is that there's no judicial oversight. No where to go for appeal.

And you might have someone taking care of your bills because you're sick or incapacitated physically.

That's different and there should be a way to appeal that ruling.

Posted by: Bitter Clinger and All That at July 22, 2015 08:58 AM (x3GpS)

So you should lose your right of self defense if you suck at keeping track of your money? That seems... kinda fascist.

It seems particularly fascist when the government is actively and gleefully throwing up barriers to people earning an honest living with which to pay their bills.

Either way, they're documenting all of it. If they're really on top of things, they're documenting it all twice - one for your file, one for hers - and they'll conclude (if they haven't already) that SOMEONE is difficult to work with.

Be polite, play it cool, and don't worry about it.
