This program comes into conflict with a World Trade Organization (WTO) decision that it discriminates against imported products. A bill has been introduced in the US Senate that would make this labeling voluntary for some meat products, specifically from Canada and Mexico. In May, the World Trade Organization rejected a U.S. appeal of its decision that COOL on meat unfairly discriminates against meat imports and give the advantage to domestic meat products. As a result, the program must be reformed to honor existing trade relations with Canada and Mexico and to avoid retaliatory tariffs. I very much want to know where my food is from, and the idea that this is going to be voluntary is a cute, pie-in-the-sky sort of government solution. Are we going to pretend that beef butchered in a Mexican slaughterhouse is subjected to the same scrutiny as that of Canadian beef or American beef? Here's a tasting and ranking of the best "session" beers. What's a "session" beer you ask? "Session beer" is a nebulous and occasionally provocative term in the world of craft beer appreciation. Drinkers debate the merits of low-ABV styles and argue over what truly is "sessionable" and what's not. Many debate the ABV point where "session" can be said to begin. But most of us should agree, at least, that there are few beer experiences more satisfying than discovering a wonderfully flavorful, balanced new beer that won't knock you on your ass if you drink two of them in succession. That's what "session" beer means to us, and it also happens to be one of the craft beer industry's most prevailing trends. This is exactly the kind of beer I am looking for but rarely find. I am not a fan of the mainstream lagers like Bud and Miller -- mostly because they are too carbonated -- but most anything that has real flavor is an alcohol monster. Drinking several beers over the course of a lazy afternoon grilling or reading or shooting the breeze with friends is one of life's pleasures, but not when I am a drunken mess by the fourth or fifth beer. The Paloma is actually Mexico's most popular mixed drink, and the style can be extended to bourbon and gin and vodka and pretty much anything. It's refreshing without being too sweet...perfect for a lazy afternoon when you can't get a "session" beer! It's just a "sour." The general recipe is: two parts booze, two parts sour, one part simple syrup and a splash of soda. Simple and fun. This recipe is from (Moron) Misanthropic Humanitarian. The fish recipe is almost identical to one I use for chicken thighs (boneless and skinless). The tang of the Parmesan is weird, and great. I think I'll try MH's fish version for fish tacos, because the fish can get lost in the bold flavors of the condiments, and this might stand up well. As for the cooked cabbage? I have no idea. But I'm going to try it soon, because it sounds so odd that it must be good!
combine flour and black pepper in bowl and mix well place beaten egg in another bowl Mix corn flakes, Parmesan cheese and cayenne pepper in a separate bowl Sprinkle fillet sides with salt Dredge fillets in flour mixture, then egg mixture and then in corn flake mixture. Place coated fillets on baking sheet coated with cooking spray Bake for 10-15 minutes or until fish flakes easily
shred carrots mince onion Thoroughly mix all the vegetables. Season with your favorite seasonings. Camp MH likes Lawry Season Salt. Cover bottom of skillet, fry pan etc with olive oil. Fry in cast iron skillet, electric fry pan until brown and crispy about 20-25 minutes. A baked potato finishes meal up nicely. Low fat, low cholesterol. Fairly easy to make Something a little different. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Given that I tend to have only one beer a day, then bring on the ABV %, I'm cool with it!
That said, a good "lawnmower beer" is a commodity to be enjoyed on the appropriate occasion. To that end, I've been enjoying the Busch Signature Copper Lager, at 5.7% ABV, and a full flavor withal. Six pack of 16 oz cans is running about $5.50 in the Galveston market. One hell of a value for a very decent beer. And goes well in the skillet, too. Which I shall do on the pork chops I've got laid out for tonight's repast. *Cheers!* Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at July 26, 2015 04:05 PM (RzZOc) 4

Found a new method to do corn on the cob recently. We nuke it instead of boiling or roasting. Simply slice the stalk end flat, 3 ears, 9 minutes--in our microwave, ymmv. It shucks completely with none of the silk stuck in the rows. I frequently grasp it at the tassel end, squeeze, wiggle it and the ear slides out of the husk clean as can be. Minor caution, it gets hotter than boiling will, and holds the heat longer, so be careful handling it. Posted by: irongrampa at July 26, 2015 04:20 PM (jeCnD) 16

Dunno about that cabbage, but the wife made some the other day that turned me into a believer. Cut a head of plain green cabbage into 4ths or 8ths, slather with butter, salt, and pepper (we used smoked black pepper). Wrap the pieces in foil and throw on the grill while you're prepping the burgers/steaks/whatever. As long as they have at least a half hour to cook, you're good to go.
If you've ever eaten rutabaga, you'll recognize the flavor of these. They went excellently with the Johnsonville brats we had for dinner. I think next time we'll add a little caramelized onion and chopped up bacon to the packs. Posted by: smaulz at July 26, 2015 04:25 PM (g+jFF) 23

My favorite burger chain, by far, is Five Guys. I didn't see how they could have any "secret menu" items, because they already offer you every topping known to mankind and you just need to pick what you want. My sister in law is the absolute worst combination of SJW and ....wait for it nutritionist and ed-yoo-Kay-TOR. Basically she , like all SJWs goes through life compelled to tell people what to do and is deeply uncomfortable if not in control of everyone else's life. (Her's is a chaotic mess but hey , progress! or something.) Every food and medical conspiracy theory is gospel to her. Won't vaccinate her children , terrified of "GMOs", overpays for dirty, small produce because "organic"(As opposed to 'metallic', I suppose). The government and Monsanto are causing blindness in Asian children with golden rice , don't you know? Baking soda in the pits because deodorant causes breast cancer. "That's got CHEMICALS in it ." is her battle cry. God knows what she is teaching the little inmates that she brainwashes every day between fair-trade , non-GMO coffee breaks and bites of organic soy sprout sandwiches. I used to read a few sites set up by sane nutrition experts and scientists but the hordes of GMOrons invaded the comments and the authors eventually pulled their sites. Anyway, I would love to get some honest nutritional information to make good food choice decisions . Is there such a thing? Maybe something along the lines of the AGW debunking sites like ClimateDepot? Posted by: some random meathead at July 26, 2015 05:35 PM (/m9uo) 96

As long as "made in usa" is put on USA products, how does country of origin labeling discriminate against imports? It doesn't. Imports and domestics should all be required to state their origin, and if they all have to do it then there is no discrimination. It is well within the right of the consumer to discriminate BASED ON those labels when making the free choice of what to buy. If a consumer doesn't want to eat something from a particular country, it is his right to choose not to buy it, and to use the country of origin as one of the reasons for not buying it. Labeling isn't discriminatory - it allows for informed choices.

When I want fired cabbage, I just use a bag of cole slaw instead of shredding cabbage heads.
It's not quite as good ( seems to get a little mushier) but it's good enough when you don't feel like taking the time to shred. A pound of ground Italian sausage is an awesome addition to the mix, but of course not with baked fish. I don't believe I have ever had baked fish. It seems like every new idiotic social trend is tailor-designed to make me appreciate the last idiotic social trend in retrospect.
Bud/Miller/etc. may taste like piss water, but at least we didn't have to hear hipsters talk about their freaking microbrew combination or this neo-quasi-prohibitionist garbage of "I drink it for the taste, not for the alcohol." Right around the time that wine is losing its snobbery and exploding in the US, no less. As far as I'm concerned, if I'm not at least a little buzzed after I've finished one, then I've just gotten a little fatter off all the calories for no good reason. You know what doesn't get you drunk? Water, and it's pretty cheap too. I recommend it with a side of ice. For a really authentic taste, I'd recommend using a "faucet", and it really brings out the subtle flavors if you put it in the fridge for about two hours beforehand. Martel..... pay a few bucks, take the fambly to Stewart's Beach. http://www.galveston.com/stewartbeach/ Says "no alcohol", but I suppose that depends on your smuggling and discretion skills, really. Don't flaunt it, they *will* kick yer arse out. But, the nature of the private beach there keeps you clear of the riff raff n' rappers. Not the biggest problem here, anyway. I really like the beach area on Seawall, anywhere between 45th St. and 61st St. Open to the public, but some private concessions for chairs, umbrellas, jet skis and the like. Oh, and by the way, TFB, if those Moscow Mules were served in anything besides a copper mug, you did not get the full experience of the drink.

If you click the little number next to the paragraphs, you can read the comments to the paragraphs. Some of them are pretty desperate to continue believing. But overall, I thought it was a pretty good article. Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at July 26, 2015 06:41 PM (VPLuQ) 192

You know what doesn't get you drunk? Water, and
it's pretty cheap too. I recommend it with a side of ice. For a really authentic taste, I'd recommend using a "faucet", and it really brings out the subtle flavors if you put it in the fridge for about two hours beforehand. Goya Jamaican ginger beer is hot, literally. I freekin love it. I have it with Jameson and generous bitters. The Goya could be a tad less sweet though

I hate that they're trying to stop the "COOL" labels.
I live right here where the best fish /crabs in the world are caught, yet when I go to my local Food Lion, every piece of fish in the cooler is labeled from Chile, Argentina, China, Thailand, etc... Lets me remember not to buy any. Posted by: Chi at July 26, 2015 06:48 PM (jhBMc) 198
Bud/Miller/etc. may taste like piss water, but at least we didn't have
to hear hipsters talk about their freaking microbrew combination Bragging about "preferring" something that tastes like shit because you don't like the people who like delicious flavor is pretty fucking hipster. Posted by: HR trinken trinken trinken at July 26, 2015 06:49 PM (rHXGG) 199

The issue with country of origin labelling is that as it is currently written anything that contains meat sourced from other countries must be labelled AND stored separately at retail.
This means that if live calves are shipped from Canada at 6-8 months of age to US feedlots, are fattened in the US and then slaughtered in US packing plants, must be separated and labelled with Canada as the Country of Origin. This has a large impact on margins for feedlots, packers and retailers and they're going to try their hardest to re-coup that loss from consumers. In the case above the food safety issue is completely negated as it is killed, inspected and graded in the US and for that matter inspected before it crosses the border into the US to make sure it's not carrying anything that could harm the US herd. I could find/run the stats on what percentage of beef and pork sold in the US originates in Canada and Mexico (from live animals) but since no one pays me to do it any more let's just say it isn't insignificant. My husband gets stuff every month from a delivery service called Bespoke Post. It's pretty damn hipster, but also pretty cool. Anyway, this month's box was some fancy beer glasses and various beer related items. On their suggestion we tried two beers that are, supposedly, among the best.
One was St Bernardus Abt 12 which is a Quad based on the Trappist recipe which claims to he the best ever in the world. I liked it but not as much as the other one which was La Fin du Monde, a triple. IMO, that was the best dang beer I've ever had. Sure I felt pretentious as a hell uncorking that bottle, but if you like Triples, I recommend it. Posted by: Lauren at July 26, 2015 07:01 PM (cYvuA) 203
201: Thanks.
In any case, why have the government force merchants to label? Let the merchants themselves decide whether they'll label or not. It might occur to them that meat labeled USA might sell better than a label-less piece. Why burden the market when it will correct itself? The govt's only role here should be inspecting imports (though if you've got suggestions for effective privatization of that, I'm all ears) and enforcing truthful labeling. #202: Yeah, I've had a couple of different beers from St. Bernardus, and it is good stuff.

I finally got done watching the Louder with Crowder link about Mel Brooks' Springtime for Hitler satire.
Anyone who supports banning that, I would invite you also to object to Gandhi's support of Hitler and the Nazis. Because, he totally did support them. And later, when it was revealed what the Nazis were doing to the Jews, Gandhi came right out and said, "Hey, you know what the Jews totally should've done? Killed themselves, that's what! That totally would've shown up Hitler, whom I swear I never supported." Posted by: Prothonotary Warbler, Trumpketeer at July 26, 2015 07:25 PM (wKc1L) 206

Posted by: Clarney at July 26, 2015 06:47 PM (W+Wy7) The thread's dead but.... Goya's hot because they add capsaicin to it. Read the ingredients label. That's right, they add pepper spray to your ginger beer. It tastes good and spicy but it's not cause of the ginger, it's because of the pepper spray. I knew a number of fast food places had items on a secret menu (example: Burger King's Rodeo Burger) that you have to know about in order to order. I lived in Southern California nearly my entire adult life, and I did not know In-and-Out had a secret menu. Now that I'm on the Leftist Coast (the other Leftist Coast), we don't have In-and-Out, or Jack-in-the-Box, or any of the other fast foods I own stock in...or should. Maybe that should be one of my criteria for retirement: do they have the fast food I love? Check.

Sorry, but Samsung makes junk for refrigerators and dishwashers. I had one of each die on me this year. I paid big bucks for the double door freezer on the bottom number. That went first. Local repair guys won't touch either. Sears guy traveled 75 miles to look at them and tell me the fridge was rusted inside the coolant tubes or some such thing and beyond repair. It was about five years old. He said that was about how long those last. He wanted $400.00 to fix the dishwasher. I paid him $120.00 for a service call and said goodbye. The new Bosch dishwasher is awesome and really quiet.

COOL has wreaked havoc with food supply chains. There has got to be a better way. At pointsandfigures.com today I looked at food regulation. It's over regulated and highly subsidized.
