I was watching a show on privately owned aircraft. Trump and his Trump 757 were one of the subjects.
He flew from Florida to NYC - he was the lone passenger. In transit, the Don sated his thirst by drinking from a plastic bottle of "Trump, The Water" (I shit thee not). A man that committed to preventing Global Warming by being flown around in a 757 by himself has my vote. For my children. Posted by: BumperStickerist at July 20, 2015 07:58 PM (0MJOU) 9

I don't think Trump, who didn't serve, should criticize McCain's service. McCain was tortured and permanently injured. That said, what happened to McCain was 40 years ago. Over the past 20+ years, McCain has had a lot of bad votes in the Senate. Plus, he lost to the Shia Muslim Traitor who has usurped the presidency. Incidentally it's the same reason why Bernie Sanders is gaining traction among Dems. He wants a permanent class revolution. He actually said that. He's not even attempting to hide his socialism. That tweet is spot on. Because of hundreds of commenters, someone's going to hit the sweet spot of approval.
Throw enough stuff at the wall, something will stick. And anyone want to believe that Trump has had some marketing research done to find out the sensitive topics? What resonates with who and how much? I'm thinking he was banking on the media throwing a rod over his comments but that most folks don't like McCain and don't much care for his attitude. The POW part is confusing. I don't think he meant to say what he said the way he said it. That's what happens when you don't memorize a speech but speak extemporaneously with only a mental outline as a guide. I think most folks got it though. He was saying that McCain didn't DO anything to become a hero. He DID endure which did make him a hero but he didn't actively do something. That's what I took away from it. And he definitely hit the spot with his dig at how ineffective and wrong McCain's been on legislation. Once again McCain's been asking for this for years and we'll disregard the inept talk about pow's just to hear someone slap McCain around a bit. Here's my take on Trump. I don't think he's in it for the long haul. He's going to ride this train as long as he can then choose a successor to take those votes. The establishment understands he is tapping into something powerful, so they're being careful not to say something they can't walk back later to get his votes. But they are also rubbing their hands in glee anticipating that fateful wrong step. I stole that part about being able to walk back remarks from Rush.

As for my analysis, it's basically this:
This is how bad you suck, GOP. A guy who is not a Republican is beating all your candidates, solely because he challenges the media and doesn't apologize. He seems like a real human, even if he is (very) flawed. All your guys are polished robots, all designed to avoid gaffes, and if they say anything which isn't a bland aphorism they apologize immediately. You aren't an opposition, you're a second option. You don't fight, and so people are gravitating to someone who appears to. This is about how bad you are. Posted by: Bevel Lemelisk at July 20, 2015 08:40 PM (m9wUQ) 214

Personally, I believe whoever is the President in 2016 is going to be like Hoover. They are going to be the one to get blamed when the economy tanks in such a way that even the media can't hide it. (and if it's a so called Republican they'll yell it to the rooftops)
I think that they're setting up whoever wins to take the fall. They expect that person to be a Republican. Let's change things up and give them a Fake Republican that can actually make a deal and knows how to scrape up the bucks to save a project. The project being the USofA. We (the voters) haven't been in control since at least after Reagan. Too many didn't like what he did and intend to see that that never happens again. I say there's no downside to putting sand in their gears. Posted by: Bitter Clinger and All That at July 20, 2015 08:41 PM (x3GpS) 219

I also question if all the free trade agreements, such as NAFTA have actually been good for our economy or not...
Posted by: BB Wolf at July 20, 2015 08:37 PM (qh617) Free trade is generally beneficial -- especially if you're the exporting nation. NAFTA CAFTA etc are not "free trade" agreements, insomuch as they're "preferred nations" agreements. So in other words, they make special deals with say, Canada and Mexico, that make other countries at a disadvantage if they want to enter US markets. But that's what we're talking about -- other countries getting special deals to export to us with lower tariffs and under more "favored" circumstances (for example, customs). So yes, cheap Chinese products (arguably) leave more spending money in our pockets at the end of the day. So there is that benefit. Plus, you know, the obvious disadvantages. Some here - and the vapid twink "editor" guest hosting for "regularize them" Hugh Hewitt - are really pretty amazing. Of course Trump's showmanship and "controversy" has raised his profile and numbers. But almost entirely because of the one huge issue he tackled (and thinking about it, that metaphor works, not entirely in a positive way of course). Mind exercise: Trump did everything exactly the same, except .... instead of illegal immigration, he highlighted, say, tax reform as his hot topic the last month. Or school vouchers. Or balanced budgets. Describe how "hot" his campaign would be, how much focus he would get from the MSM. Show your work. Posted by: rhomboid at July 20, 2015 08:49 PM (QDnY+) 263

This poll is amazing for Trump. Trump has got nearly one quarter of Republican voters. That's saying something for a field of sixteen!
Further, in the three long months that voters have gotten to know Jebbie, he has fallen nearly ten points! Meanwhile in the one short month voters have gotten to know Trump, he has risen from 4% to 24% so he's gained twenty points. Trump's support in the latest Iowa poll found no drop after his McCain remarks. I saw a suggestion that Trump should take the stage with veterans and make the VA scandal the next news-cycle. That will help him with any one who was bothered by the faux-controversy. Rick Perry is covering himself in shame today. He compared Trump to cancer. Cancer kills people. I've lost close family members to it. It's a recent hurt and felt like a punch in the stomach when I saw Perry's tweet today. It's insensitive and over the line. What's next? Comparing Trump to ISIS? As a former Perry supporter, it truly saddens me to see Perry take this road. He is obsessed with Trump and is virtually stalking him. Posted by: Aslan's Girl at July 20, 2015 08:49 PM (xetep) 266

Describe how "hot" his campaign would be, how much focus he would get from the MSM. Show your work. It could be any issue. Okay, I think the scary part of the is that the GOPe has NO IDEA what to do with Trump. NONE.
Trump is an idiot child compared to the propaganda machine of Dems+Bucreaucrats+MFM. Somebody, anybody, step the fuck up, right quick, or it's going to be Trump or Jeb vs Bernie or Hillary, and just about any of those is a fustercluck of metaphorical nukes landing on our country. Unfortunately, I think the MFM is deliberately backpaging Walker and Cruz, and only letting Perry in as long as he looks like he's weakly biting at Trump. The MFM clearly wants Trump vs. Jeb. The scene in which Mongo knocks out a horse has a basis in reality. Mel Brooks' former Your Show of Shows (1950) and Caesar's Hour (1954) boss, Sid Caesar,
who was a physically imposing and somewhat violent man, reported in his 1982 autobiography "Where Have I Been?" that while trail riding with his wife, her horse caused trouble and he punched it once between the eyes. The horse collapsed, unconscious. He notes that this event was Brooks' inspiration for the Mongo-vs.-horse scene. Posted by: Colin at July 20, 2015 09:03 PM (STIxg) 332

Nothing more needs to be said, really. That post says it all perfectly. ThunderB, I will pray for you. But I do have a question-did she invite herself, or did your husband invite her? If he did, is he okay with her "lifestyle" choices? Because if this isn't your choice, I would advise you to suddenly need to take care of one of your relatives, take the kids, and leave hubby to deal with her. Saves your sanity, and maybe helps him to understand why she is not the best house guest. For what its worth, my husband has a whack job sister. She decided to visit a few days after he returned from the Bosnian war, and announced to my two and four year old children that he was her brother before he was their father and my husband, and she needed time alone with him more than he needed to see us. Basically, I told hubby that he could choose to continue to spend time with this whack job, or he could stay married to me. He chose wisely. She's not been to the house since. And frankly, it's been much better on our marriage. Posted by: Moki at July 20, 2015 09:08 PM (x303I) 356

I'm telling you, in a three-way race between Trump, Hillary and Jeb, Trump has a decent shot of winning. And even if he doesn't, at least Jeb will come in third.
The GOP needs a wakeup call like that. They can either adapt, or die and make way for a new party at that point. But nothing will happen if (and by "if" I mean "when") Jeb loses in a two-way race against Hillary. That would just be business as usual. I for one have had quite enough of business as usual. 4 Non-Blondes' "What's Up." He's attacked viciously, by dems, media and many spineless gope'rs. His business suffers mightily. Everyone appears to abandon him and he's called every name in the book. He doesn't slink away. He doesn't apologize. He says fuck you, fuck you in the as. He doubles and triples down. He goes out and finds these crime victims that the media promises don't exist and shoves them in your face and says what the fuck. He goes after mccain for attacking gop voters and never backs down. And he pivots to vets isues all the while showing mccain has been awful for vets. Yeah, but is he really hard core conservative on capital gains? Trump's significance, and contribution, lies in:
1. Dragging festering issues out into the open, when most politicos yearn to dance around them with anodyne banalities; 2. Forcing GOP wannabe candidates to move to the right, since Trump is now kicking their asses by being to their right; and 3. Teaching those morons in the GOP how to deal with the Communist press, viz., to seize the initiative with bold statements that they cannot ignore, to stay inside their OODA loop, and to treat them as the treasonous vermin that they are. In short, to take the fight to them. Do I want Trump as a candidate? No. I want him to mentor whoever is the candidate in how to conduct a street fight. So what's the meta here?
Strikes me that what we're seeing is a tacit statement from the GOPe that they believe a conservative candidate cannot win the presidency in the present climate. On the other hand, if the conservative base stays home, the GOP will also lose in 2016. I so hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I suspect we don't need to bother with the formalities of an election in November 2016. Either the conservative base will stay home, or the GOPe/comfort class/let's get along crowd will stay home or vote for the Dem. Either way, barring some major change by then, the GOP candidate is going to lose in November 2016. Posted by: Agent J at July 20, 2015 09:43 PM (ueOgE) 499

Bevel, may be my fault, but you seemed to have missed my point. Trump would *NOT* be where he is today if he said something "controversial" about tax reform or school vouchers (whatever that might be). It could *NOT* be any issue. Yes, you are right, of course his combativeness and what was really normal a generation ago (not automatically backing down/apologizing when there's no reason to) are part of his appeal, but I don't think that any other issue would have had the same traction. And for good reason. chemjeff, not sure I understand your response. I have no idea (or interest) how Trump chose illegal immigration. Trump doesn't interest me, and he probablydoesn't interest most of his "supporters". The message and importance of Trump are what they say about the GOP and the political class in general. Yes, you are right, of course his combativeness and what was really normal a generation ago (not automatically backing down/apologizing when there's no reason to) are part of his appeal, but I don't think that any other issue would have had the same traction. Not so long ago, I thought Scott Walker was our best hope. He's been so great about fighting the Left in Wisconsin, after all.
But then the first few candidates began to announce, and that's when Walker went to Iowa and said, "Yes, sir, I loves me some corn socialism!" That, combined with with his sudden and very public struggles to find a position on illegal aliens that wouldn't offend anyone, showed me that he would not fight the GOP establishment in any meaningful sense. And that very establishment is at least as much of a problem as actual declared leftists are. When Walker got in line Saturday to kiss the ring of that world-class turd McCain, that clinched it for me. We're better off with Walker staying in Wisconsin and just being an awesome governor there. Bevel, and note it's not just GOP rank-and-file. Illegal immigration - well duh! - polls nearly the same across party lines, and even more than most would bet across ethnic lines (incl. "Hispanics"). That is, concrete, realistic and specific illegal immigration questions. rrjpr, well-said. Though verging, perhaps, on an ace-like "over-determined" argument? Meaning Hollowpoint (on this topic, not a reflection of him in any other way) is just lazy and not thinking critically. And speaking of cycles of myth and paralysis (my off-hand term for what results from the process rrjpr describes in clinical terms), today as I zipped past the Yahoo front page (email) I saw a "story" that warned of a looming .... brace yourself .... "government shutdown"!!!! eleventy! Recall that it is electoral death to have a "govt. shutdown". Said "shutdown" can occur almost any time a president wants (effectively, if you understand the politics and the process), therefore Congress must more or less do everything the president wants, and nothing he doesn't want. This is, without exaggeration, the instant reductio ad absurdum we arrive at by declaring "shutdowns" politically damaging. It's amazing how even some more (apparently) observant people didn't see that in the last iteration. Posted by: rhomboid at July 20, 2015 10:08 PM (QDnY+) 593

Posted by: ManWithNoParty There are important "tactical" issues to run on, and important strategic issues to run on. Illegal immigration straddles both the tactical and strategic, because at its root, it is an important constitutional issue that has been kicked down the road by the opportunists that want to capitalize on it, either by getting cheap labor or recruiting Mexicans to vote. It strikes directly at the nerve of many Americans, because it calls into question their value and identity as citizens. It is self-evident that the self -serving and cynical opportunists don't give a whit about what ~70% of Americans (Democrats and Republicans and Independents) think about this. Oh, and Trump was using the *first* "uninsured" number, the same one the idiot in the WH was using during his pathetic and unsuccessful sales tour for O-care. Recall those numbers kept coming down as people challenged them. The only relevant category - involuntarily, financially uninsured - is a small fraction of 42 million. What's Trump plan to deal with the 15 to 20 million illegals here after he builds the wall? You may want to look into that. Posted by: Cruzinator at July 20, 2015 10:21 PM (B7Uun) 629
I do find it incredibly stupid when people explain away some left-wing position Trump has taken with "well what's the difference, the GOP is just as bad!"
I'm not going to suddenly support universal health care because Trump insults someone I also dislike. And I've heard Trump sing all sorts of praises about what a great Senator Hillary was when he was on Hannity years ago, and he even had her at his wedding! You know, if Hillary said she was going to build a wall, I guess all the Trump voters will go to her. Our entire ideology goes out the window if someone promises a wall It's not like somebody has ever promised a wall and not delivered Posted by: Kal at July 20, 2015 10:22 PM (A3kYV) 630

But the goal should be clear: Our people are our greatest asset. We must
take care of our own. We must have universal healthcare. Posted by: chemjeff at July 20, 2015 10:06 PM (2XMpf) Define "our" people, or are you willing to let the government do it for you? To me, the biggest diasppointment has been Ted Cruz
If there was ever somebody who could plausibly be a fantastic border hawk, it would be him This would be his moment, instead he's dodged it Posted by: Kal at July 20, 2015 10:25 PM (A3kYV) 635

@637
Cruz has to tread lightly because he's Latino and because he's a Texas senator who still needs to keep his phony baloney job when his Presidential dalliance is over. Posted by: Kreplach at July 20, 2015 10:29 PM (WVvzl) 637
Selective editing cowardice. I made a couple of lengthier posts to you upstairs, which you conveniently ignored.
Wanna have the courage of your squishy establishment convictions and and tackle them point by point? I have little interest in wasting that much time on an LIV Trumper buffoon. You just go on with your bad self talking up the amnesty supporting, Hillary donating, socialized health care advocating True Conservative Hero that is Donald Trump. #632: As I've said several times already, and been ignored by the anti-Trump folks each time, Trump now calls Hillary a criminal.
It looks to me like he knows better now. We all know Hillary is a criminal. Name another GOP candidate who's come out and stated that, which we all know to be true. Posted by: Prothonotary Warbler at July 20, 2015 10:30 PM (wKc1L) 639
Is someone allowed to have these two thoughts at the same time?
A) Illegal Immigration is probably America's biggest problem B) Trump is a piece of shit attention whore and conservatives are not helping their cause rallying behind him Posted by: Kal at July 20, 2015 10:00 PM (A3kYV) Illegal immigration is good launching point for taxes, budget, unsustainable entitlements, unemployment, crime, defense (failure to), treason. Completely missed my point. You can't get people to think about your ideas if you can't your foot in the door. The "my 50 point plan to deal with illegal immigration" is not going to win over the typical voter. BTW, Trump basically said build the wall first, get rid of the felons and then discuss what to do with the rest. Posted by: WOPR at July 20, 2015 10:34 PM (nRvEn) 642

But why is it so hard to for ted Cruz to say "Build a Wall!"
I don't need a candidate to use "salty" language describing the 3rd world invasion that is happening, but if we're to the point where ted Cruz can't say that, then I don't trust them I mean, we have a secure trip line along the Korean border with our military, why does South Korea get this protection but not the US? I would still 100% vote for him, but you can't tell me a Canadian immigrant who came from Cuban immigrants is going to be a "tough on the border" kind of guy. Posted by: Kal at July 20, 2015 10:44 PM (A3kYV) Posted by: Cruzinator at July 20, 2015 10:46 PM (B7Uun) 654

Ok done. My take away is he wants to expand legal immigration? The U.S. already immigrates over 1 million per year so it just sounds like a slick way of getting back door amnesty for Mexicans. And he also wants to expand the H1b visa system? Again why? The h1b visa system was intended to help companies and industries fill jobs that truly couldn't filled by indigenous workers as we have seen the h1b system has been a disaster for the American tech worker. Cruz sounds awfully bullshitty on immigration. Posted by: Kreplach at July 20, 2015 10:50 PM (WVvzl) 656

I'm not voting for Trump. I am enjoying the chaos he is causing. But, his statement when he made the infamous Mexican remark was build the wall, deport the felons, and talk about the rest after that. Simple and understandable messaging. We aren't doing the first two right now. Just give me those two and the third step becomes a lot less contentious. Cruzinator, I'd like to point out that Cruz is one of only two GOP candidates who thus far have refused to slam Trump. The other is Carly Fiorina.
It's a well-known fact that Cruz met up with Trump a few days ago. I suspect they were discussing the possibility of Cruz being Trump's running mate, should it become necessary for Trump to select a running mate. What will you do if Cruz does become Trump's running mate? Posted by: Prothonotary Warbler at July 20, 2015 11:17 PM (wKc1L) 661

"Trump is running to embarrass Republicans and put Hillary in the White House."
I disagree on Trump's intent, but agree helping elect Hillary is surely the ultimate effect. Trump is only in this for himself. Trump doesn't care if his antics help elect Hillary, as long as it gets him more of the attention every narcissist craves. After Hillary is elected, Trump would continue doing what he's always done since he inherited his Daddy's fortune, paying off politicians (including Hillary) to ripoff taxpayer money to subsidize his ventures, that would fail in a capitalistic free market. Meanwhile, all the emotional release cravers feeling "I'm mad as hell and not going to take it any more" couldn't care less that Trump is Hillary's best political ally (not even counting the money Trump contributed to Hillary's campaign). As long as Trump sounds as mad as the emotional-release voters feel, they'll vote for Trump to elect Hillary. Posted by: gensec at July 21, 2015 07:16 AM (O+6LQ) 672
Don't believe the polls. Use your own decision making when you give your vote. The "Polls" in Israel put the Left (Obama paid) parties as those that would win but in fact despite all the funds and Obama tactics didn't sway the vote and the people proved the polls wrong.

Perry was my guy in 2012 and I made numerous excuses for his eventual failings (which I do think were related to his back surgery) so when he got into the race this time, with apparently a clearer mind and more preparation, I got excited. Then I saw him on Brett Bair's panel on FNC and he couldn't give a straight answer to any question. Not one. His immigration response was pathetic, his answers on the economy were all "look at my record in Texas". And then all the Trump attacks, which are idiotic. To be quite frank, its frustrating when it really feels like NONE of the candidates can give straight answers to any questions (I saw Jindall on the panel and he was the same way). Its ALL generalities with them. Trump is resonating because he's got some specific (albeit mostly ridiculous) ideas and he does seem like he'd actually fight ot win against the Dems.
