Explaining, expertly, why military recruiting stations are gun-free zones.

No terrorists have ever attacked a shopping mall.

Such things just don't happen.

22 I'm so old, I remember when U.S. shopping malls used to get shot up a couple times a year by individual wackos (seems to be less often now that states are letting people carry more). Even if you're completely ignorant of Nigeria (so, most Americans), it shouldn't be real hard to imagine that a group of people can shoot up the same places a single person can.

45 She starts with a argument that is at least not totes crazy:

The US typically doesn't have armed military walking around the streets.
Again, defensible to a point. We aren't a banana republic (yet) where the military maintains peace all the time with guns.

That being said, that sorta conflates two issues. Yeah, we don't have military carrying M16's around town, but we have tons of people (cops, CCW holders, private security) who carry side arms all the time. There's no reason the military should be any different in that regards.

108 I could be persuaded to go down to E-3 or above.

I would be fine with anyone out of boot camp getting a sidearm. They qualified, they are able to fire a gun in anger. They are troops. We trust that buck private with rocket launchers and grenades, but we can't trust him with a pistol to defend himself? Cops don't even get as much training with firearms as a soldier or a marine.

(Search is also bringing up the spoiled-brat progg-anarchist attacks on recruiting stations from 2007-2008--anyone remember those?--but they mostly attacked empty buildings at night because they're too cowardly to face even unarmed military. *ptooey*)

THREE DAYS BEFORE SHOOTING, MUSLIMS STAGED PROTEST IN CHATTANOOGA AGAINST 'AMERICAN TALIBAN'

The shooter at the Chattanooga Marine shooting has been identified as Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez, leading many to question if Islamism might have been the motivation for the shooting. It might not then be a coincidence that three days prior to the attack, Muslims staged a protest at Chattanooga defending Islam:

(see picts)

They targeted Chattanooga because the FBI caught a man from there who was planning an attack on a Mosque in upstate New York.

Just a coincidence? Perhaps. We'll find out more as information is released about Abdulazeez.

Well, that's just not true. There are many, many service people who have little more than the most familiarization with small arms.

There were all kinds of idiots that I served with who would not be qualified to be armed 24/7. I would say E-5 and above, who have held combat-arms MOS's. That seems restrictive...., but believe me, there are plenty of arms-inept people in the services.

239 believe me, there are plenty of arms-inept people in the services.

How many expert shooters do you think are on the police force? If there's a real problem with hapless shooters in the military, that's pretty easy to solve, don't you think? Putting them on the range and training them more then arming them seems a pretty easy and obvious solution.

Yeah, there will be some dumbasses who can't handle a gun. There will be some who just aren't worth trusting with a weapon. They'll identify themselves pretty quickly. I'd like to see that before seeing more troops killed while being helplessly disarmed at the base or while out at the recruiting office.

They need to be able to exercise their right to self-defense because they are citizens, as do the civilians and contractors with whom they work.I agree with arming them, but it needs to go further. I work on an installation where 1/3rd of the people there have CCWs, and many (like me) routinely practice practical shooting. No reason why we shouldn't be able to carry inconspicuously.

YMMV, but I stand by my comments.
There are thousands of service people who might bear arms during conflict, but are primarily suited to,say, typing. They have neither the innate psychology nor can they be (nor are they inclined to be) trained to handle firearms properly and responsibly. It just isn't their job, nor is it practical to make/keep them proficient and competent. It just isn't.

That is why people are steered into different MOS's. There is a vast gulf between the psychology of Audy Murphy and Chelsea Manning.
