Scott "The Enigma" Walker Announcing Today He's Running For President

Nifty video.

Great message...I'm a conservative, I've won as conservative, I've governed as a conservative and I'll be a conservative President.

Awesome, right?

Here's the thing. The Scott Walker we all thought we knew from the union fights really hasn't been the Scott Walker who has spent 6 months running for President.

For many it started with the whole Liz Mair thing, which I defended him on but has continued on issues like immigration (he supported amnesty for years before suddenly opposing it), ethanol, etc.

And now his campaign aides can't keep their damn mouths shut about how conservative he really is.

That's why, according to Walker allies, he's going to pursue exactly the opposite strategy Romney used in 2012. Whereas Romney started in the middle and moved rightward throughout primary season, Walker is starting on the right and will shift toward the middle.

"You start in Iowa and lock up conservatives, because if you don't do that, none of the rest matters," said one longtime Walker adviser, who requested anonymity to discuss campaign strategy. "It's much easier to move from being a conservative to being a middle-of-the-road moderate later on."

The adviser added: "In Iowa, you see the beginnings of that. He's capturing that conservative wing first and foremost, and then moving from Iowa to the other states and bringing other voters into the fold."

A little free advice to Walker, find this person and publicly execute them.

I want to believe that Walker is the "Better Liar" I've been looking for...the die-hard conservative who campaigns like a moderate all the soccer moms can swoon over.

But for a guy whose sales pitch is supposedly authentic conservatism on steroids, he just seems slippery.

He could be the greatest thing ever or another moderate who will sell us out in a heartbeat. I just don't know. The rule of thumb is if you can't spot the sucker at the poker table, it's you. I get the feeling conservatives going all in on Walker might be the suckers.

We'll see.

And, when viewed from Space, the wall will spell out "TRUMP's WALL" ...

47 I think Walker being the "better liar" and being (or at least speaking) less conservative than we'd like aren't quite exclusive. If the "most conservative candidate that can win" is accomplished at hiding his conservatism, but also has the skill to hide poo-grains of leftism... well, that sucks, really, but may still be our best option. The impressive act would be primarying conservative, running as a partial squish on "scary" topics in the general, and governing conservative, but I don't see that as an easy way to win.

As Wisconsin stands now we have a far more conservative legislature with long unheard of margins than have been seen ever.

His Lt. Governor Rebecca Kleefisch will be a future player in this Sate and maybe on a national level.

The party is a hell of a lot healthier than it has ever been with a far more Conservative tilt than even the Thompson years.

And what has he changed on that you find offensive? I haven't seen anything yet that bothers me save for his lukewarm stance on illegals. I want to see him shore that up but other than that I have no big issues with him.

And no, I'm not surprised that candidates tailor their message to different voters. They all do it. They've always done it. They will always do it.

Voting for anyone is a crapshoot but I like Walker's record of executive action, emphasis on executive and action. He's not perfect, nobody is, but he is the best combination of record and experience in my book. Your mileage may differ.

174 Walker has a proven track record of actual accomplishments which, hey, there's a nifty thing. See re: Perry and Jindal also.

Someone, and my apologies for forgetting who it was, mentioned something that gives me pause in that why is Walker not out there raising hell about the John Doe investigations and why has that law not been repealed. It's not a deal breaker but it does temper my enthusiasm somewhat.

I don't really have a problem with saying hey I'm going to campaign as the fluffy bunny. So long as it's a positive spin on fundamental positions, that's fine. I'm assuming, however, that we're all very gun shy about rhetoric and reality and the ever evolving leftward about those who run as conservatives.

192 Why is that? I agree that getting Mexico to pay for anything is just noise but what's the big deal with building a wall? If Chinese peasants could build a wall over extremely rugged terrain that is longer than the width of the US I don't get the pushback that building a wall on our southern border is technically impossible.
Posted by: JackStraw at July 13, 2015 10:40 AM (OGm46)

In Texas, any fencing has to built well inland of the border, sometimes a mile or so, because it can't be built in the floodplain, so you're walling off people form their houses, farms, or even their college classes, and so police and fire department can get to your house. That's why the fencing in Texas has huge gaps.

Yes, they can put in gates, but they'll have to put in hundreds, and few want the responsibliity of having the key.

So yeah, it can be done, anything can be done, but it's more complicated than many think.

So far in the condemnations that have taken place, the people who fought it and held out for more money have done better.

I think we should give all GOP primary candidates big shiny gold medals and declare all of them winners because everybody's equal but oh so special in their own very special and unique sort ofway.

Grow the hell up. It isn't tearing down a candidate to examine their comparative strengths and weaknesses and determine if they've got the stuff for the job. Take Walker, for example. Walker's strength is he's not afraid to fight public sector unions. Walker's weakness is neither ISIS nor Iran are public sector unions, and his comparisons along those lines discredited and disqualifiedhim, in my view. Last I heard, Wisconsin schoolteachers haven't been capturing sex slaves and crucifying children.

Walker's a lightweight. We can't afford a lightweight President this time around--especially since it's a virtual certainty our next President will be a war President, thanks to Barack 'Peace In Our Time' Obama.

Most of the "border fence" we do have is chain linked and/or regular post and wood fencing (like for cow pastures).

It gets broken and/or driven through fairly regularly.

If illegal immigration is not stopped, the lack of ID check at polling places will allow them to vote. Studies have shown that illegal immigrants have been voting in large numbers already, and 7/10 of Hispanics vote Democrat.
If we do not put a stop to this, we are effectively allowing our government to dissolve the people and elect another. Do you want to be disenfranchised in your home country? If the answer is no, then immigration is the key issue.

360 I'm anti-Walker, but I think his "success in a blue state against the unions" may be a bit overblown. It's not a knock on what he did, but I suspect that he got a lot of help from the left, specifically the retired union left.

If I'm an already-retired unionista in WI, I know deep down that the state retirement system is unsustainable. If it crashes, I stand to lose my retirement. But if it's brought under control via Walker's reforms, my retirement remains stable; sure, I might lose a little, but that's better than losing it all.

We know that leftists are shallow me-firsters. Makes total sense that the retired folks drawing union retirement pay might tacitly support Walker. It would just be a case of "FU, I got mine, and I'm keeping it."

Just a thought, and maybe I'm reading too much into it.

California is easily the MOST Left Politically of any State.

We are also the most corrupt... with laws being ignored constantly and special interests having all the power in Government (even more than the Feds IMO)...

Hell.... 17% of Drivers are driving on suspended licenses... because the Highway Patrol has changed from a group dedicated to enforcing the Law, to a State Revenue Generating Entity.

Yet they have time to take Guns away from Veterans... if you can even buy a REAL gun legally here...

In California, you see the RESULTS of too much immigration.... as you have immigrants who will not FIGHT for the American Culture, because they were not raised in it, and thus do not KNOW it.

I don't want his work to kill him. But, with the retirement age getting pushed back, pushed back, pushed back, he might be 70 before he can retire. He'll be dead by then, if he keeps going at the rate he is going.

totally agree, except the 1000 mile long Texas part of the border fence isn't built on the border. It's built well into US territory. We would be essentially ceding a lot of acreage back to Mexico with a truly solid, impregnable wall.

Not that it can't be done, but it probably won't. And any time a candidate promises to do that and do it quickly, it's a signal to me he's lying, or ignorant. They all lie, but this is a particularly obvious lie to anyone who's familiar with the situation.

What can be done is putting in more fencing than we have now, but a solid wall ain't happening.

SJW - Attacks Christians because they believe in peace and thus will not fight back.

Kevin D. Williamson - Attacks nominal conservative "allies" knowing that their desire not to violate Reagan's first rule will protect him.

SJW - Attacks law abiding citizens exercising their Constitutional rights knowing that they will only resort to lawful means to protect themselves.

Kevin D. Williamson - Attacks principled conservatives for their opposition to positions that are not conservative , and safely doing so from his protected fortress in the Establishment Republican mouthpiece, NRO.

SJW - attacks cultural icons and hallmarks of Americana (that won't fight back) and attempts to control and micromanage people, usually because of deep self-loathing , "daddy issues" and insecurity

Kevin D. Williamson - attacks the base of his own party because of his fear that someone that his beloved father-figure, Republican puppet masters can't control might depose one of his acceptable candidate talking-heads.

Very interesting to me. In each case the attacker knows that his target will not or can not fight back. The common thread seems to be cowardice.

418 I want Cruz but I'd settle for Walker.

Walker also, more than any candidate, brings out the elitist-mastermind (to borrow a Levinism) nature of progressivism. His lack of a college degree though having been a successful Governor, and his all around regular guy appeal (that I don't think is forced) bodes well in the cultural political wars.
Contrasts nicely with Her Royal Entitlement, and in my opinion he's not as vulnerable to the mean, mean, meany arguments that will be leveled against most of the other candidates, by virtue of his bio and general affect.

As I've said before, I think Walker could really follow the Lincoln path of gaining the nomination as everyone's second choice.

Discouraging (to the extent one can be even more discouraged) watching the talk about a border barrier.

It wouldn't cost anywhere near $1T (full-length versions have been costed out for a fraction), check the cost of the few serious barrier sections today (esp. the San Ysidro-El Centro sector - San Diego/Imperial County, basically, which is representative of the situations and terrain for much of the entire border).

As for complicated terrain/settlement situations, as in part of Texas on floodplains, those can be dealt with. They don't amount to a blip on the screen for the project as a whole. Even if some terrirtory has to be "ceded" to no-man's-land, if an actual effective border barrier is built, it is well worth it (nationally). And any good landowners displaced should receive royal compensation, outlandish compensation (again, this will be a drop in the bucket compared to the fiscal savings for any single border county, much less the country as a whole).

In Israel, I haven't yet seen an estimate of the (easily) preventable deaths from terrorist attacks that occurred after the security barrier plans and proposals were available - but whatever it is, it's an outrage and a troubling black mark against Israelis' practical common sense on security, itself an astonishing thing.

But let's not have our own version here. The "technical" or cost fretting about a border barrier are as detached from easily observed reality as the idiotic predictions of bliss and plunging cost-curves were for O-care.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy that Walker was able to reign in the expenditures. I'm just saying that I wouldn't be surprised if people who outwardly oppose him quietly supported him in order to protect themselves.

I understand what you're saying about your Dad. My brother's in the same boat job-wise (although in my brother's case his lack of any retirement fund is his own fault). The guy is now 49 and has been doing floor covering since he was 20. He's been a victim of his own success, highly sought after for commercial work because he always finishes before the deadline and does exceptionally high-quality work. He looks like he's 60 because he simply can't find enough good help and has to compete with illegals underbidding him; as a result he winds up doing 75% of the work by himself. And we're not talking small endeavors, either. When the FedEx terminal at the Memphis airport was built, he and two helpers did the entire thing in two months. All that has taken a severe toll on his body. He really needs to find a new line of work.

I said anything is possible, but it would involve perhaps moving whole parts of towns, moving farmhouses, paying for the loss of condemned land, etc. As long as the Federal government is willing to pay FULL price for the value lost, then build away. This is one of the poorer parts of the US and would lose a lot of acreage.

I still don't think it's going to happen. It has nothing to do with CAN we do it, or a lot of people WANT it done; I just don't think a solid impregnable wall is going to happen, and I know for sure Trump is lying about it. Just being realistic. More fencing will happen, but it'll always have big gaps. It goes right through the middle of towns as it is now.

482 State-owned Iranian news source PressTV has reported that the international sanctions against the Islamic Republic are already beginning to be lifted.

According to the report, Tehran's Day Bank held an official ceremony to mark its reentry into the SWIFT global banking system. SWIFT is the secure network that nearly every bank in the world uses to transfer money internationally.

The European Council instructed SWIFT to drop its service to Iran in 2012. Without it, many Iranians could not send money abroad or receive from foreign relatives.

Somehow, this ceremony was not picked up by Western news outlets, though PressTV published its report on Saturday.

First order of business, sending 100,000 troops to the border letting the world know we mean business. Not sure he/she exists, but if I HAD to bet, I'd begrudgingly vote Walker, just on actions speak louder than words....maybe a Walker/Fiorina

I just got back from walking in the park/bikepath. I passed a father with his little toddler (training wheels and all).

I hear the little one say "But we need love."

Dad says "Yes, sometimes we need love, but you have to wash your hands after, okay?"

As I walked farther away, all I heard was Dad emphasizing and trying to get his little boy to promise to wash his hands after whatever the heck the kid did.

lol

502 Oh sheesh. I really wanted Walker to run, but I agree, everything he's said and done in the past six months or so sounds weaselly. And to some extent I agree with him that we're going to have to work out some sort of amnesty for some the illegals already here, but that shouldn't be the starting point of the discussion. We have to secure the border, deport any illegal who so much as jaywalks, crack down on employers hiring illegals, and kick all illegals off of government assistance. Once that's done, a lot of the illegals will 'self-deport' and we can start to consider what to do with the ones still here.

If I were a candidate I would talk up border enforcement and penalizing businesses that hire illegals. If anyone asked me, "But what about all the people already here? You can't deport them all!" my response would be, "That will be the focus of my second term in office."

509 We've tried voting for reasonable candidates. We've tried voting for inoffensive candidates. We've tried voting for people who had a "moderate appeal" that never materializes at the ballot box. It hasn't worked. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.

Let's go by the principle that you don't get flak unless you're over the target. Let's logic it out. Does the Left waste energy destroying people that pose no threat to them? Whoever they're most laser-focused on destroying should be our candidate. Not the ones they want us to pick.

We can either try the political subterfuge game, and probably get fucked by a candidate who is actually a squish who doesn't stand for anything, again... or we can do something different and vote for the one they fear.

Yep. Here in the People's Republic of CA to enroll my kids in school I had to show 18 forms of documentation to prove we were residents of this town. Why not make it 19, and require proof of legal residence in this country?

Same thing with employment. If a company hires an illegal, fine the hell out of the company, say $50,000. And regularly send inspectors out to building sites to check.

Withhold tax outgoing wire transfers of less than $50,000; let those doing the transfers claim their money back on their Federal income tax returns.

Cruise Home Depot parking lots, bust people for loitering, and check documentation. No docs? Adios, amigo.

Strongly discouraging illegal immigration is easy; it just takes the will to do it.

From an outsider (no party) looking in, all 15 or so GOP candidates would be better than (slower govt growth and regs) than Hillary.

Except Jeb. Jeb is Hillary in a male pantsuit. But he would make the exact same leftist decisions on immigration, taxes, budget growth, wall street payoffs, locking in socialist healthcare, etc.

The 'Legal' companies want to charge me up to $8000 for about 200 ft of fence... which is ridiculous...

So... my other choices either do it meself... or hire an illegal... (about $2 a foot average for materials....)...

Welcome to the California economy.... where trying to do something legally costs you about 8 times what it should costs on the other market...
Posted by: BB Wolf at July 13, 2015 12:10 PM (qh617)

---------------------------------------------------------------

Why do legal companies charge so much? Why do you have trouble affording it? Because you both pay so much in taxes.

Why do you pay so much in taxes? Because you're paying for entitlements and benefits for other people.

As Pat Boone said, "I'd rather pay $4 for an apple than pay taxes at their current rate".

Don't be hypnotized into thinking illegals are an inevitability. They are the original source of the problem. The other way of thinking is the way that keeps liberals entrapped: "Things are so crappy right now, so we need MOAR government to fix things and take care of me". No, the reverse is true.

They are here illegally, thus the word illegal. They need to be deported, either by making it impossible for them to benefit by being here or forcibly if necessary.

Hey MH, don't give Jay all the border tough guy love. Here I am! Pick me!

Seriously, every single aspect of this (workplace enforcement, financial leverage over remittances abroad, physical border security) is very simple, and would be *easily* done, if there was a will/decision to do so.

As Jay implies, barriers (like terrain and minefields in land warfare) are meant not just to block, but to channel. I've seen neatgraphical presentations of the *actual* border crossing situation, based on numbers of people/value of contraband. It's a long border but very little of it is actually much used by the bad guys. For good reasons. Every - every - aspect of building an effective border barrier is wildly - wildly - exaggerated by most people when discussing it. Not all do so tendentiously, with a bad agenda. But still.

OK, common sense suffices. But let's go beyond that, to be nice, and just glance at small analogous specific actions and what their impact was. AZ's immigration law, before it was over-ruled by the Politburo, er, the "judiciary", resulted in visible changes to the illegal situation there.

An economist could say that the "elasticity" of the illegal immigration problem to almost any relevant signal - enforcement, physical barrier, complications in getting paid or remitting your pay abroad - is extremly high. You get instant, material results from almost *any* serious action.

Of course you do. Duh. The illegal immigrants are almost entirely rational actors when it comes to their presence here, thus predictably their behavior is very sensitive to key practical issues.

The technical/ownership/social/legal complications to erecting an effective border barrier are, to use a treasured but lost expression, "girls' gym".

I favor an all-of-the-above approach--punish employers who knowingly hire illegals (and make it easy to know if someone is legal or not); fine and deport those in the country illegally (with leniency for a first offense and severe punishment for a repeat); yell from the rooftops that these people are being taken advantage of in the worst way by the smugglers and blackmailers and rapists who know these people will never come forward; punish the Mexican government if they persist in pushing their poorest and most vulnerable into the US.

We, the American employers should not be responsible one bit for enforcing immigration law (you know like the Feds keep taking AZ to court to tell them to stay out of it).

We, the American employers should be able to assume anyone who is in our country and asks for a job is here legally with the government's permission. We shouldn't have to spend one penny or one second figuring out if the person at our doorstep was allowed through - if they are through that is the government's doing, not ours.

Even if they were real (which I highly doubt), they're disgruntled little backbiters who want to see the candidate fail and will tell any lie to make that happen, under the cover of anonymity of-freaking-course.
Now, in a few months, I can't wait to read Drew saying Jeb is our best bet because of "electability". Just like every other squish he's ever supported.

636 So here's the thing: I didn't know he wasn't already running. That's how little crap I'm giving about this.

I don't know what these "campaign gurus" are telling the candidates, but nobody cares anymore.

Trump is a lunatic, but he has one thing right - get out there and fire people up. Don't pussy-foot around it.

637 Stale thread, but another problem on the border is that DOJ won't prosecute drug and human smugglers that smuggle under a certain amount of pounds of drugs, or number of people., so few are getting prosecuted. CBP is undermanned and undersupplied too.

638 We, the American employers should be able to assume
anyone who is in our country and asks for a job is here legally with the
government's permission. We shouldn't have to spend one penny or one
second figuring out if the person at our doorstep was allowed through -
if they are through that is the government's doing, not ours.

That's stupid and dishonest.
Already, employers have to submit I-99 forms for new hires, verifying citizenship or legal residency for new hires. With SS#'s.

Many companies are in massive disobedience of the law as it presently exists now, or are committing criminal fraud, knowingly.

Your statement indicates you know nothing of the present state of the law, which has been in effect for well over 25 years.

Yes. But you know what? Politicians are like teenagers and voting for them is like giving them the keys to your car for the weekend ... and hoping and praying it will come back in one piece.

640 It's happening again. The conservatives are eating their own cuz none are perfect on every issue and we're gonna lose. May as well hand it to Jebby-Jeb, the base stays home, and Hello President Cankles.

Posted by: THE Big Old Fat Guy at July 13, 2015 01:47 PM (rVGaB)

641 Hey Bossy,

I know about all the paperwork. You are belittling someone, who as an employer, had to write fricking checks to pay for employee's ex-wives for child support -- (yeah, there is another gdamned thing I shouldn't be doing).

We always report employees for taxes using the id and s/s they give us - still, though, that isn't enough now is it? This blog is filled with Marxists who want to shut down businesses who happen to "hire workers illegally". Please be aware that verbage over those 25 years have changed: It is no longer "hire illegal workers" but has changed to making "hire illegal workers" the equivalent of "hire workers illegally".

The employers have now been criminalized for not doing the government's job. We have to collect and pay their IRS taxes, we have to collect and pay their Medicare, Social Security, employee share of fed. unemployment taxes, we have to enforce immigration policy, we have to enforce divorce court rulings, we even have to enforce health care crap against our will.

This is not a fascist country where the businesses are supposed to be big brother. Yet, my bossy conservative friends seem to think that we would be better off moving closer to fascism and let the businesses and government be one.

Sorry, but no dishonesty here, the truth is real: It shouldn't be my job to do the government's job for them.

642 I don't know how the consultant game works, but like with Flynn is IL18, it seems the GOTV game is partly owned by guns for hire, so they have to be on board. Flynn's first choices were apparently bought up by Rauner/LaHood with help from Boehner money.

The real route to the presidency involves dealing with some money people that have "needs" for their money friends. Hillary has those lined up, even from foreigners, but conservatives have a more difficult route. And if Walker is the real guy, he has to choose his staff carefully ... they might just cut him off at the knees as a favor to Bush. Or maybe that "awkward" quote was floated to win some big money Chamber type people.

The unions went hardest against Walker, so he deserves the valor award. Carly can say all the right things, though I don't even know all her positions. But she probably won't be getting the big money like Jeb.

One "subsidy" Americans overlook is the half price discount on all our electronics and clothing, which we get by enriching our enemy China with most favored trade status. That robbed America of jobs, while building their military and economic might ... but everyone clings to their cheap stuff subsidy. No one is pure.

643 Going to disagree with everyone on this board that agrees with Ace.

Walker beat the shit out of the heavily entrenched unions in Wisconsin. Wisconsin voted twice for Barry, and it voted three times for him.

He turned Wisconsin into a Right to Work state and he turned the legislature from blue to red.

He actually executed on promises and a plan-where other candidates are talking about it. Big f'ing difference.

The Republican primary is full of wannabes. The only ones that matter are Walker, Bush, Cruz, Rubio and Paul. Bush is the old establishment that Ace talks about. Cruz and Paul are the future of the Republican Party. Freedom loving, combat special interest type people. Rubio is close to Walker; but he has never been an executive.

If Walker runs against Hillary, he will add her bust to the trophy room in his house. Next to Richard Trumka, Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson

Posted by: Jeffrey Carter (@pointsnfigures) at July 13, 2015 02:36 PM (LnE5F)

644 Not sold on Walker, but what other wins on contentious policy issues have we had lately outside Wisconsin? That's gotta count for something.

Posted by: Max at July 13, 2015 03:02 PM (e1SFr)

645 "I get the feeling conservatives going all in on Walker might be the suckers."

Yeah, we better vote for Amnesty Jeb or "Donated almost exclusively to Democrats" Trump instead, right? Oh, wait, that's a terrible idea. Well, how about one of the one-term Senators currently running? Oh, right, that would open up a serious criticism of "How can you say Obama wasn't ready as a one-term Senator, but that one of these guys are?" (There's also that pesky little detail that Senators make questionable presidents, with Obama serving as Exhibits A through Y.)

The Left despises Walker. That's more than enough reason to vote for him. They also unearthed everything they could about him in the recall and in 2014, making him battle-tested. That sweetens the deal. (If you don't see how, look how Jeb has botched almost every major policy question so far.) Throw in the fact that he won three elections in a blue state. Gee, you think he might have campaign people who know how to GOTV?

But hey, feel free to play the "I'm not gonna support the guy who doesn't support me 100% of the time" game instead. Worked so well in 2008 and 2012, didn't it? Look, I'm not saying you have to support someone you don't want to, but I'm really sick of the haughty attitude found on the Right. Candidates shouldn't lie their asses off to the base or take the base for granted, but the base needs to see the bigger picture. Is the threat of someone not supporting you on some issues really more unacceptable than someone who will not support you on *anything*? 'Cause if it is, then you're no better than a LIV. Actually, you'd probably be worse because a LIV would still turn out to vote, while you're sitting at home like a sucker.

648 At this point, it's anyone but Obama and his kind. Even Trump would be better than Obama - at least he has SOME knowledge of economics.

So, Walker. Fine. I like his fighting spirit.

Just as an aside Jeb? Well, I'm a Floridian. He was a decent governor. But I DO NOT LIKE dynasties. And if we end up with another Bush/Clinton year, I may just go vote for Bugs Bunny. Or move to China, or some other more sane country. (At least they are experimenting with Capitalism...sort of.)
