Breaking News From the AP: Iran Deal to be Announced Monday [Weirddave]

flaming_skull2a.gif

VIENNA (AP) — Negotiators at the Iran nuclear talks plan to announce on Monday that they have reached agreement on a historic deal capping nearly a decade of diplomacy that would curb the country's atomic program in return for sanctions relief, diplomats told The Associated Press on Sunday.

The two diplomats said that a provisional agreement may be reached even earlier — by late Sunday. But they cautioned that final details of the pact were still being worked out and a formal agreement still awaits a review from the capitals of the seven nations at the talks.

And senior U.S. and Iranian officials suggested that not enough time was left to reach a provisional deal by Sunday. All of the officials, who are at the talks, demanded anonymity because they weren't authorized to discuss the negotiations publicly.

"We are working hard, but a deal tonight is simply logistically impossible," the Iranian official said, noting that the agreement will run roughly 100 pages.

Story here.

Those fools. Those utter, useless, EVIL fools.

I actually hesitated on pulling out the flaming skull because we all knew that this was coming, but I figured in the end, the official announcement that the final section of the road to World War III has been paved was worth dusting off the skull.

We all know that the copy released by the AP is complete propaganda. These were not "tough negotiations" and the deal will do nothing to "curb" Iran's rush to a bomb. The important thing is that a deal was made on Iran's terms because "Deal" was the only thing Obama wanted out of this. The nature of the deal mattered little, and if that's your position going into a negotiation, the deal you get is going to be the one that your opponent wants.

This is what happens shallow, vain, ambitious, narcissistic and frankly stupid people get concerned about what their "legacy" will be. Well, there are many different kinds of legacies. Here's a guy who has a lasting legacy, and he was none of those:

Peace.jpg

Neville Chamberlain was a British patriot who honestly thought he has succeeded in steering the world away from repeating the horrors of WWI, and instead he guaranteed the greater horrors of WWII. John Kerry and Barack Obama are children playing diplomat on the stage of the world. Their overwhelming concern is not what the results of their actions will be, it's that they be remembered. Well, they will be remembered alright.

10 It's a terrible, helpless spectator feeling watching these events play out. I'm reminded of a scene from the 1993 movie, 'Gettysburg', where Union cavalry General Buford, played by Sam Elliot, expresses his great fear that Lee's army will take the high ground before Meade's main force arrives, which--it if happens--means a hopeless assault on those hills by Union forces, with no result but slaughter, disaster, defeat.

"It's as if I can actually see the blue troops in one long, bloody moment, going up the long slope to the stony top, as if it were already done, already a memory...".

Same thing here. I give it a year, two years top before whatever happens happens.

Nope.... most will die of starvation.... I put it at 500 million plus....

The worlds population is ONLY fed due to modern agriculture, and the ability to move large amounts of food to regions where it is not grown.

When the economy collapses (due to debt and the worlds banks no longer being able to prop them up), the system will collapse as countries become insular, to take care of their own.

Think of the US 's economy today, in a WW2 situation... where economic ties are destroyed due to war... where China is not making the crap the US economy wants... where even our MILITARY electronics are made overseas...

Once WAR stops commerce... and history tells us it will... then you need to be self sufficient... (which is one reason I see the 'Free Trade' at any price capitalists in the Republican party as a threat to our existence)...

BUT.... we can and do feed ourselves.... most of the world... cannot...

I think he should stick to illegal immigration for now. That topic is heating up, and he should continue beating on it for a while to extract maximum mileage from it. The Iran sell out is a huge deal, but not ripe for the LIVs yet. Better to focus fire on one target long enough to destroy it before moving on. If he drops illegal immigration now, before others take it up, the issue will submerge. The Democrats and Vichy Republicans sigh in relief, and The Donald won't be able to revive it later.

67 Predicting the future is difficult, mostly it is the when something is going to happen is the difficult part. That something will happen is the easier part.

First ... As some of you may know, and it's not hard to figure out my pre-bane identity, I'm a pretty damned non-religious man. But I tell you ... these events remind me of my childhood stuck in a Baptist church, listening to Revelation. Call me crazy.

Second ... I really, truly, do not understand why so many of you still cling to the notion of "fixing" this country. The US is leading the diplomatic effort that will result in the elimination of Israel. Why "fix" that ? Why not let it fall, and replace it ?

Finally ... To so many of you that recoil at the "harsh" and "coarse" rhetoric of me and those like me ... those are just words expressing ideas. You're going to see and feel much worse. Best start with baby steps, and learn to tough out strongly verbalized ideas first.

Much worse is coming.

Of course the AP dispatch is ludicrous distortion, as noted, but in one more key respect too. It's not capping off a decade of "tough diplomacy" - it's a collapse ofa remarkably effective sanctions regime that took many years to erect and which was simply abandoned, disastrously and stupidly. Even alongside the other eye-popping self-inflicted calamities of the last few years, this is catastrophic.

And many herethink in terms of mushroom clouds, US cities in ruins, or Israeli-Iranian nuke exchanges. Possible of course but not very likely.

Iran's regime is extremely aggressive, yet extremely savvy and careful (compare and contrast with the Iraqi Ba'athist regime, in 100 words or less). Nuclear capability is the shield under which their ongoing and expanding aggressions can shelter and proceed. No need for mushroom clouds.

Think of North Korea's more zany and insane stunts (assassinating So. Korea's entire cabinet via bombing in a third capital in the 1980s, becoming a literal drug-running cartel state in the 90s). A future strategic gambleor terrorist incident sponsored by Tehran will have its enemies with sharply reduced options - deterred by Iran's nukes.

Nukes simply expand Tehran's range of options and changes the risk calculations for their myriad nefarious activities. A gigantic disaster all in itself, no detonations required. And if things DO go there, then the catastrophic circle will be completed.

Chris Taylor, absolutely understand what you're saying. My main point is that the disaster in terms of expanded/protected Iranian options for mischief is guaranteed, but an actual nuclear event or exchange is less certain.

States pursue nukes for varying reasons, obviously. Iran's case is a very clear one of offense, not defense. But that doesn't mean expecting to *use* the nukes offensively. Iranian behavior the last two decades gives me no reason to think they won't use the nuke in their back pocket carefully, and intelligently, as a deterrent and umbrella for their ongoing aggressions, which are central to their policy.

Nuclear fallout is the ash from a burned up city. It releases Alpha and Beta particles which can be stopped by the walls, windows and roof of your house and Gamma rays which will go through several feet of dirt. The only real problem with Alpha and Beta radiation is if you breath in the dust or eat the dust on your food. Your canned food jars are safe until you open them.

The good news about nuclear fallout is that the most radioactive stuff decays the fastest. The level of radioactivity drops really quickly. If you can stay inside with the cracks around your doors and windows taped up for two weeks, you will probably be OK with respect to radioactivity.

As for the radioactive mutant zombies, that is a different story.

C. Taylor, exactamundo - in fact you don't have to go back 30 years to find what are today commonplace Dem atrocities being rejected by super-majorities, nationally. Hell, as we type today, just two prominent issues (O-care, illegal immigration) produces similar poll results, and would produce similar *electoral* results, in most of the country (heck, didn't OREGON of all places just have a referendum passed preventing illegals getting DLs, or something? that's an indicator right there).

But as we all see and lament here daily, there seems to be little link between the electorate's desires and the ruling class/regime's behavior, on issue after issue. The system is broken in that very fundamental sense.

Ace ought to put up a link to buy gas masks on the side bar so that if you buy some for your family he will get a cut. It would be good if Ace had a pied a terre outside of New York City and Amazon bucks might help him come up with a down payment.

Hey, I have really bad hay fever and I wear one of those Israeli gas masks while mowing the lawn. It makes a big difference. After mowing the lawn I get undressed and take off the gas mask last before jumping in the shower to wash off all the pollen. The fact that a gas mask will protect you from breathing in fallout dust in the event of a nuclear explosion is just coincidence.

350 37 million died in WWI. 80 million died in WWII. I wonder how many will die this time around?

Math says we are overdue for a war with a nine digit body count.

I will be surprised if the survivors don't ultimately count ten.

Oh - and weirddave, spot on about these being children playing on an adult world stage. Many people fling insulting adjectives at many Dems/libs because they hate their policies and "ideas" (rightly so), but in this case there really *IS* a question of intellect and character.

You could gather up every cabinet member (most deputies, too) and major agency head, and not have a single person a serious administration would ever consider putting in an important job. Ash Carter's no dummy, technically, he's just you're typical policy and strategy lightweight, reached his Peter level as a dep-asst SecDef, probably. FBI head is not stupid, either, though he's got a pretty simplistic and self-righteous concept of constitutional matters. And the senior staff? Ha. Exclusively Beltway lightweights, hacks, mediocrities.

Even the political side is pathetic. But as they run in an empty field (the GOP essentially offers no serious opposition), with a dumbed-down electorate and a massive propaganda apparatus promoting/masking/distorting every move as needed (press/academia/pop culture), they ..... win!

354 Yep, pretty much by definition. Long half-life ~ low specific activity.
I used to do a lecture demonstration on the various particles and emissions. Alpha particles are easily stopped by a piece of paper. Beta particles take several layers of aluminum foil.
Gamma rays (forgotten the source) took several lead bricks.

That's correct.

Regarding how much time, the estimated time needed to spend indoors to avoid the radiation is around 96 hours, IIRC. I seem to remember hearing/reading that somewhere in my distant past and I do remember reading a column by Derbyshire that said this too. Of course, how close one is to the blast and where the fallout hits in intensity matter too, so it could be up to two weeks.

I remember reading about fallout shelters when I was a kid, and the rule of thumb seemed to be to plan to stay in a shelter for up to two weeks.

A lot depends on the wind speed and direction. In some cases, you could be 20 miles from an explosion and the wind could carry the fallout past you and drop it on someone 50 miles away.

That's just because most of the U.S. casualties will be civilians anyway. The war won't last long enough to deploy. Not that any units that try to deploy would last long enough to get anywhere. WW III will be a war of sheer destruction, not conquest.

Also, tritium isn't the trigger for hydrogen bombs, it's the fuel. Triggers (aside from being a fission bomb on its own) contain beryllium, because it readily generates free neutrons. About 60% of a hydrogen bomb yield comes from the depleted uranium tamper, since the energy level of the fusion-generated neutrons from the D-T reaction are just perfect for fast fissioning U-238.

Read "Dark Sun" by Richard Rhoades for a fascinating description of the development of the H bomb (and a frustrating discussion of the political games that got us here).

Pretty sure that "honorable" was not on the list of selection criteria for anyone in the Obama administration.

Aside: it's socked in here, and dark. Wind is picking up, and I heard thunder. Looks like there may be a storm here. Calgary got over an inch of rain in a few hours last night, and some underpasses were flooded. Maybe that system is working its way here. We need rain, in fact. And my own place is on high ground, no risk of flooding.

---------------

You're not wrong, rickl; it just depends on where one is with regard to the fallout and how much of it lands in the area. It can be as short as four days but it can go up to several weeks, too.

http://tinyurl.com/lqyzgkw

How long can I survive in an underground bomb shelter?

Survival will depend on a number of things including distance to ground zero and basic supplies. Generally, you will need to stay sheltered at least 4 days. The closer you are to the detonation, the higher the levels of radioactive fallout will be. Also, since the radioactivity begins dropping soon after detonation, your close proximity means you will have more radiation over time when compared to locations down range who may not start receiving fallout for several hours. In short, you will begin receiving fallout which is more lethal than the reduced amount delivered a hour down range from you. Therefore, you could expect to have to remain sheltered for several weeks if you are within a few miles of ground zero. Regardless of distance, one could survive in a well constructed underground bomb shelter for months assuming enough supplies and circulating air is available.

364 I think he should stick to illegal immigration for now.

In retrospect, perhaps it would have been better to take the guy on, and let the CIA know what's happening. They might have been able to better monitor his network. And if the CIA showed no interest, at least you could make an effort to sabotage his learning.

You are thinking of Iodine which is taken as a prophylactic dose. It saturates the thyroid with normal Iodine so that there is no Iodine-131 uptake. Bentonite is used for kitty liter and in oil wells as a sealant.

369 For iodine blockers, look up potassium iodide, or KI tablets. They can be taken right up to a few hours after exposure to radioactive iodine. They only block iodine, though. Not Strontium, cesium, or any of the heavy bone or kidney-seeking isotopes. For those, you have to avoid exposure.

Posted by: RushBabe at July 12, 2015 03:13 PM (zdw2Z)

371 Great news!!!! After months of knuckle biting face to face negotiations, Obama and Kerry got a great deal. In exchange for "removing Israel from the map", Iran will be allowed to "remove Israel from the map". Also South Carolina and Mississippi. Also Idaho. Also "anywhere white people congregate in large numbers".
Plus, Iran gets the Kardashians, including The Jenner Experiment.
And Joe Biden.

Posted by: fuqdat at July 12, 2015 03:21 PM (4Z0vT)

372 One of the great negotiators, Roger Dawson, says the first rule of negotiating is always "The winner will be the last one willing to walk away from the deal."

Another rule is "Never offer to split the difference; it is a unilateral concession," with the corollary, "Never agree to an offer to split the difference: it's a sign of weakness which should signal you to be firm on your offer."

It's sad to think the future of mankind may rest on the resolve of the French.

~~

But Chamberlain had little choice. What was his alternative? The British war machine had been almost completely dismantled after Versailles, and the public was in no mood for rearming. He had no way of knowing Hitler was bluffing. We didn't learn that until after it was all over.

Munich was a bad deal, but there was no good deal to be had. It's easy to blame Chamberlain for not threatening to go to war in hindsight, because we know more now. Not an easy call at the time.
