Donald Trump, 2012: Romney's Policy of Self-Deportation Was "Crazy," "Maniacal;" Romney Lost All the Votes of Those "Inspired to Come Into this Country"

The Art of the Deal means selling what the public's buying.

"He had a crazy policy of self-deportation, which was maniacal," Trump said. "It sounded as bad as it was, and he lost all of the Latino vote ... He lost the Asian vote. He lost everybody who is inspired to come into this country."

...

"The Democrats didn't have a policy for dealing with illegal immigrants," Trump told Newsmax. "But what they did have going for them is they weren't mean-spirited about it."

...

"For people that have been here for years that have been hard-workers, have good jobs, they're supporting their family... it's very, very tough to just say, 'By the way, 22 years, you have to leave. Get out,'" he said during an appearance on Fox News. "I'm one of the world's very conservative people, but I have to tell you on a human basis, how do you throw somebody out that's lived in this country for 20 years."

When he had nothing to gain either way from his policy, he said that self-deportation was maniacal, crazy, mean-spirited, and "very tough" (as in hard, or terrible, to do).

Now that he wants your vote he's "severely conservative" on the issue.

Hey, you all believe what you all gonna believe. You do you, as they say.

Trump is also telegraphing an interest in a third-party run, saying he's not thinking about a third party run -- "yet."

A refrain in here has been "but what has Trump said that was wrong".

TRUMP:Number two, I will get ones that are criminals, drug dealers, and the people that are forced in by Mexico and you know exactly what I am talking about, because Mexico is smarter, and sharper, and more cunning, and frankly, have much better negotiators than we have. And I would get ones that are forced in by the country of Mexico, into our country. Forced in, those people would get out and they get out fast

So, (1) forced in by the Mexican government? Is there a citation somewhere?

(B) They have better negotiators? We're negotiating about Mexico forcing its rapists on us and they're winning? Is that really what he's saying?

He uses that word - negotiators - to remind people that he wrote a vanity piece in the 80s about his dealmaking skillz.

I don't see Trump as running severely conservative, or whatnot. He is who he is.

60 The summer before a campaign truly kicks off in earnest is called the "silly season" for a reason. The fact that so many people indicate a willingness to believe whatever shit is spewed by whatever clown is "attacking the establishment" is indicative of how fundamentally non-serious so many TruCons really are.

Anybody falling for Trump's self-promotional schtick should just fuck off home and leave the political discussions for those of us with functioning brain cells. I wasn't in the least bit surprised to see Drew lecturing the so-called "establishment" that Trump is all their fault. If it is a day ending in "y" and Drew has a cold it is the "establishment's" fault.

And there were the Usual Suspects, lapping it right up with enthusiasm.

And you TruCons wonder why the mainstream of the party thinks you are to be discounted and ignored. The self-be-clowning as you fall all over Trump's idiocies should be a clue.

But, nothing gets some people more excited than hating on the great unwashed Spanish-speaking horde from down south all comin' to steal "our jobs." Mr. Pavlov, ring that bell and watch those dogs salivate!

he called Romney's policy of self-deportation (which would happen, Romney said, because he would cut off all the jobs going to illegals through E-verify and stuff) "crazy" and "maniacal" and 'Mean-spirited."

So they get to stay here, and keep working their illegal jobs....

but we'll have a Big Wall or something, I guess.

81 untrue, untrue, untrue. Clinton won with a mere 39% of the vote. Bush, then, had less. A fair amount less.

It is a strange thing for the GOP to get less than 45% of the vote.

Where did those votes go?

------

If you took the Perot votes away, you'd likely get to a 52/48 split. Depends on who you think would get the 52. I'm convinced it would have been Clinton based on analyses I've read. But we'll never really know.

You're falling into the same fallacy the gope usually pulls, that somehow they are owed the votes on the right end of the spectrum. I'm saying those votes would have stayed home, and will next year.

If anything the shame of the 1992 election was that so many people wasted their vote on Bush.

Is he saying we need an AGREEMENT with these countries to patrol our own borders or enforce our own laws?

Posted by: ace at July 09, 2015 03:03 PM (bhepQ)

No, but instead of Mexico escorting central americans through their country and turning a blind eye to the drug gangs smuggling them across the northern border, we could use our influence to get them to at least pretend to not want people crossing the border in to Norte Americano illegally.

Of course, it's a win/win/win for Mexico. They get the remittances in the form of hard US currency, they don't have to deal with a restless unemployed underclass, and they don't have to support said underclass financially.

So it's a tough sell to get the Mexican government to try to enforce their northern border and to not allow central americans to cross their southern border (with the intent of coming to the US), but it's doable.

Self deportation is nothing the way Trump describes it. He's dead wrong about it or at least you can say it has never been tried. At least not for 40 years or more.

When illegals are denied ANY benefits and employers are punished the way the IRS goes after conservatives for employing them, then people will a) have zero incentive to come here in the first place and b) those that are here will be forced to get the hell out.

another shock, apparently Palin is the Plan B for the Trump bid.

okay i'm getting out of this thread. There's just too much predictable fanboism.

I posted an article. This article contains, get this, ACTUAL FACTS, actual positions Trump has taken in the past.

This is valuable information, whoever you are.

But there is a contingent here, and all over the web, that is *determinedly* anti-fact, and is just pure emotion, and gets very UPSET when you post facts.

They have Their Truth, their emotional Truth, just like the Social Justice Warriors, and they get emotionally angry when this Unreality is threatened by contrary fact.

I can't deal with these people, just as I could not deal with the thousand claims that Palin made herself MOAR VIABLE by quitting the governorship.

This hyperemotionality when confronted, again, by FACTS, does not speak well of you.

And it's exhasusting for me. So i'm going to look for news stories, and hang out on twitter, and when people go "Why is ace on Twitter instead of being here?" it's because i get exhausted by the brittle emotional landscape of people who seem to think that *FACTS* can be insults.

They have compromised themselves to the tune of "Read my lips, no new taxes." Trump is fed up with Obummer and friends running the USA into the ground, and he at least has named problems and solutions. That is a lot better than anything I have heard from the "approved" candidates yet. And I somehow feel Trump's negotiating style would work better on foreign policy than anything else mentioned yet. He wouldn't sell out the Middle East to Iran and pick VIENNA to do it in, either.

To be fair to Trump, there's a difference between saying "we need to build a fence and enforce immigration law" and "it's difficult to deport someone who has lived here for 22 years."

So they get to stay here, and keep working their illegal jobs....

194 Ace - I'm somewhat surprised by your reaction. I guess you won't be reading this. I really don't think too many people take Trump all that seriously, and I'm quite certain people do not think he is all that conservative. People don't really support Trump. Trump is a proxy. He is a proxy for how people feel on immigration. Much of the GOP and the top tier candidates do not seem to care about it (at least not in the same way). So how to get their attention. Well one way is to support the one person who seems to express how they feel about it. I doubt Trump believes what he is saying, but as Drew said he is filling a vacuum. And he is giving a voice to those who cannot voice themselves. The end goal is not to elect Trump (not for most people). It is to get the GOP candidate (whoever that may be) to focus on this issue. This isn't fanboyism. This is politics.

Rudy Giuliani explained one of his border plans the other day. Evidently he's been working with other countries (South America) who are dealing with Illegal Invasion issues too.

One of his solutions (out of a comprehensive approach) was to put 40 stations across the border, manned with so many hundred patrols. Hundreds per station, and they would need to be mobile to deal with the movement of the illegals as they try to avoid the units. This is one plan he sold south of us.

He *may* have said 22,000 patrols, total. He was okay with a wall as well.

There must be something Mexico wants/needs from us, on an ongoing basis. No need to tie the two together explicitly on a "tit for tat" basis; in fact, if you have two brain cells to rub together, that's the last thing you do, because it restricts your freedom of action, and invites the other side to game your demand. ("OK, here's your tit; well, not really a tit, more like side boob. A little bit of side boob. Actually, just a glimpse. Of a flat-chested chick. Cool?")

Just indicate your displeasure about what they're doing, and then (after a short but decent interval) indicate that there are unforeseen (and unmentioned) difficulties with your doing what they want. No connection with the first matter, just a bureaucratic snafu, and you've got TOP. MEN. on it. But it's difficult ...

They'll get the message, and then when they do what you want, you do what they want, and you haven't had to climb down or otherwise reverse yourself, AND you haven't put them in a position where they have to lose face if they give you what you want.

Simple, really.

232 >>>Ace - I'm somewhat surprised by your reaction. This is politics.

why are people protesting the posting of FACTS, then? Why is doug screeching, as usual, about "establishment Ace being back"?

Are facts "establishement?"

And that makes the non-establishment crowd what, anti-fact?

There are times when the enemy within is a graver threat to our country than the enemy without - and this is that time.

The political establishment must be decimated at all costs - there isn't much an individual can do, except it looks like Trump is going to give it a go so he should be backed. Sadly, the GOPe will stop at nothing to put a stop to it. The Dems will stop at nothing as well, thus the media, corporations, GOPe, are focusing all their assets, including indirect control of the blogosphere to attack Trump.

Seems uncalled for. I'm not really sure we disagree on anything. I have in no way (not to my knowlege) defended "impolite, unmanful, screeching trolls."

In no way did I articulate that "the more "emotional" you feel about an issue, the more latitude you have in personalizing and emotionalizing every discussion."

I think all my comments have been non-personal and relatively emotionless. That is not to say that emotion doesn't move people in politics. That is a fact - one you would agree with. I'm not talking about to the point of making people become assholes or trollish or saying nasty things. I'm talking from the standpoint that emotion just appeals to voters.

Accepting that does not make one equivalent to a SJW. Reason can back emotion. Pro-lifers are emotional. But they are emotional because they believe it is the taking of a human life.

2nd A advocates are emotional. But htey are emotional because they have a God-given right to bear arms backed by the Constitution.

I have long argued that the GOP should run on guns and abortion. Because that gets people to the polls. Not 57 point economic plans.

Immigration may be on of those issues. Its not my big issue, but it seems to be for others.

362 >>>I think Trump's utility lies in moving the Overton Window back toward sanity and common sense.

I don't think you're right at all. He's moving it in the opposite direction.

Megyn Kelly moved the Overton Window towards sanity.

Trump moves it in the opposite direction, by making common-sense and fair proposals seem like they're mean and racist.

Some people seem to want that -- they want a policy that is already controversial not to be made to seem less controversial and more common-sense (which increases the chances it becomes law), but to be stated in the most inflammatory and unappealing way possible. They want it be even MOAR controversial, because... I don't know. They feel "anger" in their hearts and want someone to parrot their anger back at them.

You do not win by seeming unhinged, emotional, and vengeful; you win by seeming fair-minded, rational, and pragmatic.

The same policy can either win or lose, depending on the approach.

Screaming and yelling and acting like Maenads is not the method for making policy into law. It's a formula for permanent self-ghettoization.

You could have said the same for Newt. But, Newt for POTUS?

One thing I've been noticing is that Trump does not have a handle on the details when in an interview. He knows the big picture, and speaks in big picture, and generalizations, which can get him in trouble. He'll have to practice at debating, or he will do horribly.

Brent Bozell's group backed up Trump's claims about the Mexican rape problem, a Media Resource Center piece, acknowledging that Trump was right on that.

He thanked MRC, but he has to have those numbers on him at the time of the interviews.

No one takes the dopey cake more than Perry, imho, but Trump could pull a Perry in the debates. With no back pain medication in his system.

I've met leaders who aren't good with remembering details, and they could be brilliant leaders, and I've met brilliant number crunching leaders. It's more down to the persons character after that.

Trump reminds me of my days in NY City.

Please explain 2008.

My explanation is that adults left the stage after Bush Senior. Obama was elected because he appealed to two passions: anger at Bush, and feeling historic about voting for the black guy. They turned out. Romney? He didn't inspire, he didn't fight, and his base didn't turn out.

Elections aren't about "serious candidates." They're about ideology, passion, and money. Your work behind the scenes is adult and serious, but the electoral scene? It's a circus, and everyone knows it.

That is why Trump is doing well. He has "game" in this environment, and people appreciate a serious competitor, even if he has tattoos or a bad toupee.

407 >>>But if it's all burning down anyway, Trump at least doesn't give a fuck about the media or SJW's. I could pull that lever.

i do appreciate that aspect of trump, However:

The fact is most people subscribe to a value I call "Middle Class Respectability." I think this value is very PC and left-leaning, and would like to destroy it or undermine it. But at the moment, it rules.

You will never get the votes of the "aspiring classes," those who want to join the Upper Middle Class, or who are the Upper Middle Class, by so blatantly telegraphing that you think their values are silly.

If the GOP wants to be, forever, the party of only working class whites and married women, fine, but just because you might hold the Upper Middle Class in contempt, and think the wealthy Philly suburbs are filled with stupid PC voters -- and I hold both of those positions myself -- you cannot base a politics on Working Class White Resentment alone and think you're going to win elections.

And that's what politics keeps turning into -- it's just Working Class White Resentment being spat at the Upper Middle Class (or their aspirants), and that latter group spitting scorn back on to the Working Class Whites.

No conservative has ever won without a significant majority of both cultural cohorts.

This is why I cannot support trump: Yes, it's wonderful that he excites the Working Class Whites.

But he repulses the Upper middle Class whites.

You can't win that way. You just can't. Period.

I'm tired of politics degenerating into a proxy war for class-based cultural superiority.

You're talking about the "soccer moms" and their middle management husbands in the inner 'burbs.

450 There are a million stories in the naked small town. Well, not a million because that would be like a thousand per resident but anyway there are quit a few and this is one of them. This is a tourist town and you know what tourists do, drink. So this couple comes staggering out of a saloon arguing and clearly very intoxicated. A cop happens to be there and does a welfare check. The cop offers to give them a ride to their camp trailer if they don't feel safe walking. the chick had previously tripped and fell flat on her face. They are both highly belligerent and accuse the cop of being the cause of all of their problems because he is the government. This is ironic because they are both Forest Service employees. The chick goes ballistic telling him she doesn't have to do what he says. that she is going back inside for another drink, and slaps the cop. At this point, the cop arrests her, she resists, the dude is getting all upset but eventually does nothing. After an extended battle the chick is put into the cop car where she starts banging her head on the window. They eventually get her down to the jail and put her on the intoxilyzer. The first two times don't work because she is intoxicated beyond the ability of the machine to measure it. On the third try they get a 0.500.

But here's the point: who are we talking about? Whose comments re immigration are the subject of discussion, debate, acrimony, whatever?

Trump, and his statements. He's a con artist, sure; I assume EVERYONE in politics is a con artist (with the possible exception of Romney, and look what that got him).
Rather than playing whack-a-mole against bullshit attacks from the MSM, Trump has seized the initiative, and put the immigration issue on the front burner nationally. He is now driving the bus, not the MSM. Now perhaps a more viable candidate will see how he can use that issue, and move against de facto amnesty. Let's hope.

Posted by: Jay Guevara at July 09, 2015 04:03 PM (oKE6c)

487 Or it could be as simple as he's changed his mind after doing some research. People do it all the time. I would bet people who read Ann Coulter's book would change their stance on immigration pretty quickly. Moreover, as things have worsened, it tends to focus the mind.

I'll admit I would've thought the same several years ago before reading more on immigration, the numbers and the effects. It's very easy to have Trump's previous stance since that's what's fed to you by MSM and most everyone else 24/7/365 and it appeals to Judeo-Christian values.

I've also seen many of the other candidates change their stance on issues (cough Scott Walker cough). I don't like any of them, but at least Trump is focusing on one issue that could help with numerous other issues. Of course, people could just ask him why the change and see if he says he got more educated. He could also just be pandering, but it's better than the other candidates who are just shoving amnesty and other crap in our faces and saying "take it!" They're not even giving lip service to true conservative issues; they're just Democrats with an (R) after their name.

Let's not forget the absolute leftist / cultural meltdown that was George Bush's second term.

4 years of the left acting like paranoid schizophrenics off their meds, and now I'm getting lectured for saying "hey, remember when the candidates asked for my vote and money and PROMISED to repeal Obamas exec amnesty if I voted for them, then did the exact opposite of what they had promised not a month earlier in the lame duck session right after election day?"

The point being that someone stirring up shit isn't necessarily a bad thing, even if it's unpopular at the time. The shit stirrer might just be ahead of popular opinion.

But he repulses the Upper middle Class whites. "

This is where we differ.

I believe that outside of New York and LA, the press is universally
hated. I believe this distain for the network personalities and print
pundits who appear on TV crosses socio-economic lines and unites pretty
much everyone in fly-over country except inner-city blacks.

Beat the media and the election is easy.

--------------------
I agree, outside of the Left's coastal corridors the only place the Leftist mouthpiece media has any real traction is university towns and older people of leftist persuasion who want to feel smarter than their neighbors. (That means you, Mom and Dad. ) Most people with lives and worries for the future (i.e. not the Obamaphone crowd) do not trust the MSM a bit, having seen firsthand how they distort perspective and actively choose sides in news stories. Then the MSM is surprised when FOX news beats them hollow, and when their narratives are promptly (often successfully) challenged by bloggers living between the big mountain ranges. But somehow all the GOP smart people working in DC can't see what we yokels and rednecks can see.

Anger isn't useful - thats correct too. Serious work is involved, serious thought, etc. Its why I'm working for Third Parties and actively asking people to not vote GOP in NYS, and in a larger sense *any* Blue State.

There is very much a class war going on within the GOP and its between the Base and the Political Class. Break the vehicle by which they harm you. A Blue State collapse will not affect the national Electoral outcome and you may, for once, be heard.

530 Since I've never bought Trump for one second this changes my position not one whit. I want him nowhere near a third party. What he's saying now has resonance and credible candidates should take that flag and run with it.

I don't see this as "Establishment Ace" at all. He's calling Trump out for what he's always been - an opportunist huckster and a blowhard. We need to keep the message separate from the messenger - yes to national sovereignty, no to Trump the candidate. I agree with a great deal of what Rand Paul says and I don't want him as President. I agree with very little Trump has even said until last month and certainly don't want him as President.

Third parties have to avoid these kinds of disreputable shuck and jive artists at all costs. It's one thing to be raw on messaging, it's another to be a flip-flopping shitweasel in the mold of Charlie Christ. I don't see the usually cited Tea Party "failed candidates" as belonging in that category (Angle, O'Donnell, Palin, etc...) but they show how tough it is to weather the media storm for merely being amateurish, much less being outright duplicitous like Teh Donald. Especially in the formative "branding" years, we need to be careful who we permit to speak "for" us. This is why I'm a fan of emphasizing we're an issue based movement rather than personality based - the message should always be apart from and greater than the messenger, and not subject to their foibles or frauds.

The short term tactical reason for the Mexican sanctioned invasion is to turn Texas Democrat.People forget that a generation ago, California was usually Republican. That ended withe Immigration Reform Act of 1986, which Reagan stupidly signed on to. Because he believed "This will fix it forever".But he was dealing with the pathological liar Democrats.

So

Border Reports Back Up Trump's 'Rapists' Claim

Donald Trump has been under fire for remarks he made on illegal immigrants during the announcement of his candidacy. "The U.S. has become a dumping ground for everybody else's problems," He said. "When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending their best. They're not sending you. They're not sending you. They're sending people that have lots of problems, and they're bringing those problems with us. They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists. And some, I assume, are good people."

While the remarks are certainly blunt, they're not inherently wrong. Border Patrol seized just under $3.5M worth of marijuana from Mexican nationals in Arizona this past Thursday alone. There's also been 40 cases of sex abuse by illegal aliens this year, and that's just from what Border Patrol has posted as media releases on their website. A staggering amount of those cases involve children and minors...

http://bit.ly/1frPptW

It is also known that our government won't make public the criminal cases with illegals.

They do not want you to know.

If you measure winning in terms of seats and not policy, the GOP is doing quite well.

If you measure it in terms of society, not so much.

TD - I want what you want - though I doubt I'll ever get the policies I want enacted.

But to play devil's advocate here - Obama offered his side catharsis and a two term presidency and gay marriage and nationalized healthcare.

I do think it fair to wonder why conservatives can't have that. And maybe he got the policies because he offered the catharsis and got people to the polls.

Indeed, as that guy from
Nashville sez. If the Democrats turn Texas "Democrat" again, the
Republicans will never win another national election in our lifetimes.
The short term tactical reason for the Mexican sanctioned invasion is to
turn Texas Democrat.People forget that a generation ago, California was
usually Republican. That ended withe Immigration Reform Act of 1986,
which Reagan stupidly signed on to. Because he believed "This will fix
it forever".But he was dealing with the pathological liar Democrats.
-------------------
That is the real purpose which we have seen coming for some time now. The entire purpose of encouraging and supporting illegals is to break the Conservatives of whichever party completely. It's why Trump's noisy position is good right now. If an east coast 1% man can see the threat to our Republic, then the GOP ought to be doing something about it other than going with the flow and plotting how they can make an appeal for support to the illegals that will somehow Trump (heh) all the goodies the Demokrats are handing out. Somebody finally got through to The Donald and told him that if the illegals keep coming, there will be no more USA like the one that let him get rich multiple times!

In the years to come, after Obama has left office, we will begin to find out just how BAD things actually are now. I fear a great deal has been hidden. It was certainly true of LBJ in the 1960's, and FDR in the 30's.

675 Speaking for myself, I'm not attacking "Trump supporters." I understand people are fed up with GOP bullshit on immigration to the point where anyone calling it bullshit gets sympathy and support. I'm not calling them "angry, stupid" or any other elitist shut-up/you're dismissed labels. I'm saying you're right and the GOP is wrong on the issue - but don't follow a Pied Piper.

I fell for Paul Ryan and Rick Perry in the past - I'm not one to cast too many "stupids" on this.

Backing Trump as a serious candidate would be a huge mistake, but the blame lies more in the lack of good third party option or a GOP candidate that gives these people a voice more than their "stupidity," elitists.

Posted by: trumpetdaddy at July 09, 2015 04:41 PM (ljZD2)

704 Look. Let's be realistic. And once again my broken record repeats, but try I must.

We aren't voting our way out of this mess.

You've pointed out the pieces of this puzzle yourself, ace. It's about feels instead of reals in politics now. It's all about the nummy for folks. Politics is downstream from culture.

The Regressives are ascendant because they prepared the battlefield. They softened and corrupted the culture. Thus, they softened and corrupted the populace...and thus the electorate.

That didn't happen overnight.

It can be fixed, but it will take time. No way is there enough time for 2016. 2020 unlikely. 2024...outside chance, if it's not all smoking craters.

Here's the thing: Trying to fix the culture is two fights in one. First, you get your values out there and get 'em to take root. Second, you deal with the competition that's putting theirs out and trying to undermine yours. It's hard when you're the underdog, but it's been done. It just takes a lot of time...and in the meantime, there will be ugly consequences for how far things have gone.

And all of that is long before political maneuvers have any chance of bearing fruit.

I want the GOP gone because it's taking up precious space and resources and interfering with legitimate efforts to fix things. And thus it must go, that it may be replaced. You can say this leaves a vacuum for the Democrats, but it's pretty clear that's already in place; we're just looking at clearing the debris field.

If I seem histrionic, or unreasonable, or any of that it's because, well yeah, I'm a bit upset. But I'm also looking at the field differently--a larger field I guess, a longer game. And also perhaps a different game.

Might want to think about that a bit. Perspective matters.

I do not want to be a minority in my own country and that is what we are being asked to allow and abide.
