Happy Independence Day - [BCochran]

AoSHQ's official baseball corespondent brings you some thoughts on the holiday

Happy Independence Day to Ace, the Cobs, the Weekend Open Bloggers, all of you Morons, Ettes, Lurkers, Advertisers and whoever else frequents this den of iniquity.

While, for obvious reasons, Christmas and Easter are my two favorite holidays, Independence Day ranks just behind them. I LOVE the Fourth of July.

But it seems that more and more folks are morose and depressed and generally blue around this holiday. Many folks, looking at the current state of affairs and projected trajectory, are finding less and less to celebrate about. And while I certainly understand where they are coming from, I celebrate this day all the more.

“But Brent,” you’ll say, “we’re losing at every turn. Liberal/socialist ideals and thoughts seem to be winning the day. The one thing that FiCons and SoCons can agree on is that we’re losing!”

And I don’t disagree.

But here’s the thing, I celebrate the Fourth of July as a refutation of those ideas.

What does Independence Day stand for? What is it a celebration of? It is NOT a celebration of the country as it exists. It is a celebration of the founding of this country. It is an exultation of the ideals of liberty and an act of veneration toward the men who gave tyranny the middle finger.

Those men risked, quite literally, everything. And they did it for an idea. For a hope. On faith. What they fought for had never been done before. When Patrick Henry declared “Give me liberty or give me death!” no one knew quite what liberty would look like. But they were determined to give it a try. They believed in the ideals of freedom. When our Founding Fathers declared “we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor” they did so not with heavy hearts and trepidation, but with boldness and, dare I say, joy. They were throwing off the yoke of oppression and grabbing their opportunity for a free life.

And by God they won. They succeeded. They were victorious.

Yes, they are likely distraught at what exists. There is much to bemoan, to rail against, to fear even. But not today.

Today, me and mine celebrate. We will eat, we will drink, we will colorfully blow some shit up. We will do so because brave men and women believed in freedom and liberty enough to dare all. They had far less than us, but still they had hope. Still they had faith. No one had shown them what liberty looked like, yet still they fought for it. I honor their memory today with that same hope, with that same faith. We have seen liberty, we have tasted freedom. We have done so because of those men and women and I will honor them and their memory and their sacrifice not in moroseness or anger, but in celebration and hope for the future.

There are 364 days to fret, to yell, to quake, to curse, to fear. Let us spend this day in celebration. In joy. Let us refuse to be cowed by the weight of the possibility of future oppression and instead, let us celebrate the day liberty and courage combined to give us this nation.

May God bless you, your loved ones and the United States of America.

And we disgrace their sacrifice by throwing away freedom for the empty promise of utopia.

6 Cochran well said. We're off to a 4th party today. There will be live music, home cooked food, a pig has sacrificed itself for us, and good friends. I'm eternally grateful that I was born in this nation and know no other home. Yes we'll be blowing up shit too.

7 I'm still a Patriot. These days however, it becomes necessary to consider where the emphasis lies, when commemorating the acts of our forefathers.

Politicians created the events surrounding the fourth of July. Noble men perhaps, but politicians nonetheless.

My emphasis at the moment is considering the lives and actions of the blood-spillers. The rabble rousers, those who through word and deed were willing to put their lives on the line.

I'm gearing up for a different kind of commemoration of my Patriotism. Flying a different type of Patriotic flag, and thinking on the actions of men like Henry, John Paul Jones, Samuel Adams rather than John. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, Moseby, and N.B. Forrest. Those men are Patriots too.

All of them were willing to take up arms against tyranny. That is the mission to which I aspire today. Not celebration. And not flying the flag of the oppressors.

Sorry.

8 My hubby's family had a July 4th tradition growing up (they spent summers at a quiet New England seaside community) in addition to the kids putting on a little parade, fireworks, watermelon, grilling, etc. they would read the Declaration of Independence. Had it broken out on 3" x 5" cards so that each person got to read a sentence or two aloud. Got to do this once before the summer house was sold off.
This is such an incredible document and it should be read - and reading it aloud with others makes it even better. Will probably do it today with the family as a reminder of what we are celebrating today.

9 I'll be celebrating. Not the losses we suffered recently but the fact that America, when her ideals are embraced, is the greatest country to have ever existed.

I'll continue the good fight and to do so as best I can.

12 There are some little shmucks at Vox and elsewhere saying they wished the American Revolution hadn't happened. Their reasoning (if it can be called that) is that an independent United States of America was bad for blacks (slavery supposedly would have been over earlier if we'd remained a British colony) and bad for Native Americans.

Now that's an interesting proposition. No Thomas Jefferson and the Louisiana Purchase. No President Polk and the Mexican American War with expansion into the Southwest. No California--we'd all be eating beans and corn in Los Angeles and there sure wouldn't be as many of us. Not so danged many Scandahoovians in the Upper Midwest. No Mafiosos from Italy. The Russians, Ukrainians, Poles and Jews from Eastern Europe could stay home. The Comanches and the Apaches could still be riding horses, chasing buffalo and killing each other.

Yup in this happy Eden in the little twerp's imagination, everything would be better. Of course whoever the writer is he likely wouldn't be here--his ancestors would never have left Europe. And even if he somehow got here, there wouldn't have been a land grant state college to give him the miserable education he's obviously had.

So yeah--the American Revolution never should have happened! What a maroon!

13 I used to celebrate 4th of July and feel proud. That ended November 2012 for me, when I realized I was not only in a nation that would cheat to win, but that I was largely surrounded by people who either did not comprehend, or wholly despised the founding and principles of the country. I haven't flown a flag since.

All across this great land of ours, people will be gathering in public parks. Many parks throughout this country were dedicated to the memory of war dead, or some otherwise long-forgotten hero from that town. There are statues and monuments.

In those parks, all across this land, some schmuck will be playing frisbee tag, or riding his skateboard, and he will run into one of those monuments or statues, and curse the fools who ever thought of putting a damned statue in a public park was a good idea.

Same mentality.

Our country and it's systems from the Outhouse, the former hallowed halls of congress and our criminal judges have bent, bashed, eliminated and profaned all that our country at one time stood for and was founded on. We are in debt, have around a 50% unemployment rate and have criminal syndicates for political parties. Yay! Hip hip hoory God Bless America! Land of the looters and moochers!

26 The Declaration of Independence is considered to be the natural outgrowth of the move towards personal freedom started with the signing of the Magna Carta (June 15 1215), the seminal moment for Western liberties, where specific limits on the power of the crown was forced on the crown by the nobility, to guarantee the traditional freedoms of the nobility and the people because of tyrannical oppression by the crown.

Most people forget that June 15 is also the anniversary of the death of Wat Tyler (June 15 1384) who was one of the principal leaders of the Peasant's (or Wat Tyler's) Revolt, which had been an armed uprising (called for some reason a protest in many sources in true OWS doublethink) to refute a tyrannical power grab on the part of the crown against the traditional freedoms of the nobility and the people.

Freedom is a process, not a goal. That is what the 4th means

27 Well, for the sake of my two sons, I will defend what was started, America, and what it stood for. There have been tests in the past, not least of which was WWII, where between 50 to 80 MILLION people died. It is these times that we cannot loose sight of the big picture, that this country stands far and away for liberty, sometimes more, sometimes less. I am American.

28 Freedom goes both ways. If the prigs are free to take our freedoms, we are free to take them back. Start with small things. Correct prods and their PC talk. I live in a very democrat and union (birm) area and have been doing this. Surprisingly it has had an effect! They admit there is no reason to vote for Hillary, will not vote for Jeb, but like Trump! They also admit obama has been a disappointment, and when a lib said the other day that Obama should have raised taxes on the rich, I told him that had obama done that, Hillary would have nothing to run on. I showed him it was a trick to make us keep thinking "there is more work to be done so reelect them". I saw a light go on! So start small, but start correcting their goofy ideas.

33 We are not losing; quite the contrary. The more the progressive/left spouts their ridiculous politics of race and envy the more the length and breadth of flyover country makes note. There are issues that seem to be a touchstone for the left....hit them hard there. One, the Democrat Party has always been the Party of Slavery, even into the 60's featuring Bull Connor with fire hoses and dogs, George Wallace and the Democrat Congressmen and Senators opposing the 1963 Voting Rights Act with barricades, the ridiculous 'War on Poverty' $10 TRILLION dollars ago. Virtually everything the left has done has been wrong. People today look across this country and see cities like Baltimore, Democrat controlled for 50 years, as well as my own city of Detroit. They show a black community ruined by the lefts need of a victim group so they can be so very pleased with themselves with no regard to the destruction of the black family, which plunged that population into penury and serfdom. Now people understand how Margaret Sanger and her very Hitler like policy of eugenics needed, in her words, to 'cull' certain undesirable populations, such as blacks, through abortion. Its no mistake that blacks make up roughly 11.5% of the population yet account for 40% of all abortions. And its no mistake that Sanger's offspring, Planned Parenthood, locates fully 90% of their offices in Urban environments, i.e. there are none in West Bloomfield. These little factoids opened up eyes, mine included, when discussed with even the most hard core lib/Dem, and even among the liberal journeymen I work with. Punch back twice as hard, as Instapundit sez, and deny libs the moral high ground. Because they don't deserve it.

Funny cat story: I live in a split-level house, and a few years ago I need to have some work done on the ground level, where I normally keep their litterboxes. I closed off that room and moved the litterboxes into the kitchen.

When I returned home that night, there was a turd on the kitchen floor right in front of the litterbox. That was no accident. It was obviously deliberate.

The next night when I got home, there was a turd on the hallway carpet in front of the bedroom.

At that point the workmen were finished and I moved the litterboxes back where they belonged.

There was not a shred of doubt in my mind that the next one would have been on my pillow. Kira has ways of getting her point across.

The "research" conducted by the various "ism" groups is lumped together under the umbrella of "Conflict Theory."

The basic belief is: Sure, we don't have any evidence to back up our claims, but since oppression is our experience, our subjective interpretations are JUST as valid as your objective evidence.

That's basically it, in a nutshell. So they publish in so-called scholarly journals, and are taken seriously.

Why?

65 @57 sorry, sweetie, you once had a p/nis (and still do, right?), so you can never be a woman. However, if you'd started out female and transitioned to male, the feminists would consider you a real man. Got it? Good.

Same.

The bracket that once held the flagpole to my front porch has rusted. I took it down today, filled the holes, and painted it over.

76 Most people forget that June 15 is also the anniversary of the death of Wat Tyler (June 15 1384) who was one of the principal leaders of the Peasant's (or Wat Tyler's) Revolt, which had been an armed uprising (called for some reason a protest in many sources in true OWS doublethink) to refute a tyrannical power grab on the part of the crown against the traditional freedoms of the nobility and the people.

I was just thinking about him recently, and contemplating a "Wat Tyler 2016" bumpersticker with a bunch of pitchforks on it...

Who was then the gentleman?

In Trump news, he is citing the spate of recent crimes by illegals to back up his claim and it seems that Ted Cruz is the only one in the GOP to support what he's said and continues to say. Walker, has neither blasted nor supported Trump yet.

81 I shall celebrate this Independence Day as Day One in the Transformation.

The Transformation is the collapse of the Empire and the birth of the Recovering Republic.

I call it the Recovering Republic because no republic is ever cured of weakness or evil and like an addict is always at risk of relapse.

86 Went to a pre fourth event last night, heard a beautiful rendition of God Bless America. Struck me harder than it ever has that song is a prayer, a plea to God to truly bless this land. Shed many tears at the realization; luckily was dark and people were distracted by fireworks so no one noticed.

God bless America, my home sweet home.

I also recommend the song Bless This Land, is really lovely.

87 Oh and went to Boy Scout pancake breakfast this morning. There was an hour wait in line to get food!! I have gone many years and has never been that busy. Luckily food was worth the wait, yum.

Will watch 1776 and the Story of a Patriot, the film that plays in the visitors center of Colonial Williamsburg, today. (Got both from Amazon if ppl want them.) great reminders of the founding, of how truly insane the idea of men breaking from the greatest nation on earth (at that time) and ruling themselves truly was. May we remain worthy of their vision.

90 As I watch the country I loved being demented and destroyed by the syphilis of Democracy, is it too much to ask, that those of you who also once loved her, will not piss on her grave by using the quisling word "racist"?

Just stop using that fucked-up word, OK? Do you go around calling people "bourgeios"? Of course not. You aren't Marxist hate-heads, don't use their vocabulary.

93 ""There are 364 days to fret, to yell, to quake, to curse, to fear. Let us spend this day in celebration. In joy. Let us refuse to be cowed by the weight of the possibility of future oppression and instead, let us celebrate the day liberty and courage combined to give us this nation.""

So on the 4th of july we should just eat and drink while on the other 365 days we should listen to posters here advocate letting the country burn.... Kind of schizophrenic.

95 As a 68 y/o disabled vet I can't fight the fight I used to but I can damn sure still fight with words.

Suffice it to say "GOD how I love this country"

The grand experiment that began 240 years ago today by our founding fathers, was indeed just that an experiment. None of those brave men knew what the experiment would yield, but it grew into the exceptional nation that the entire world respected. No other nation on GOD"S green earth said give me your tired, your sick, your huddled masses, no sir not one. But we did and we took those people and molded them into the "shining city on the hill" Alas it looks as though the experiment may have run it's course.

By electing the secular progressives to power positions we have forsaken our covenant with the GOD our nation was founded under. These idiots have chosen to "LEAD FROM BEHIND" What the hell does that mean? Why the phrase it's self makes no damn sense. If your leading you do it out front you can't do it from behind. What utter shit.

I pray I'm wrong but the capitol seems to want to confirm my fears.

Happy birthday America at least for now.
