All this present bullshit is just that, and a strong wind and rain can yet clear it away. I think a LOT of Americans have been corrupted by the silly and venal promises made by many of our present politicians, but I refuse to believe that a majority are flat out evil, mendacious and malevolent (though those people are out there and have a good amount of access to the levers of power).

I've slowly realized that my priorities can no longer include desperate last ditch attempts to re-animate the dead corpse of the Republic as traditionally conceived.

Instead, I have to focus on keeping me and mine alive, and healthy, and culturally and economically viable, as the Republic's arrogant successor, the Empire, becomes simultaneously much bigger and much less stable.

Surviving the coming national disintegration is the key point.

There are many things worth salvaging out of the memory of the Republic: concepts, traditions, laws. Perhaps the chance will come for a re-implementation of those ideas in a successor state, once the Empire goes bust and fragments.

A few months after that? 9/11. I said to the liberals, "Hey, what happened to the peace you were so quick to take credit for? Looks like some people were at war with us the whole time." Blank stares.

So now we've got a much much less prosperous economy than in the 1990s, along with a shit-ton of new debt, and we've got a much much more unstable national security situation than in the 1990s, and once again I'm saying to the liberals around me, "Things can and will get far worse than what you see right now. Far worse."

I fully expect that I'll be looking at blankly staring liberal faces in a decade or so after a nuclear ICBM explodes in New York City.

if you have problems pasting text then try pasting it to a plain notebook/text editor (to get rid of any funny characters and then copy and paste that plain text to this box.

There are even parts of text in the posts, here, that you can't copy and paste directly to this text box. You have to clean it up (reduce it to plain ASCII) by first pasting it in a plain text editor and then copying that to here.

The European finance ministers who told the Greeks to go fuck themselves obviously feel that the banks who will get burned when Greece defaults will survive. After a little bit of short term pain, the Euro will emerge significantly stronger. The smoking hole that used to be Greece will serve as a fresh head on a spike at the main gate into town as a way of proclaiming "We are really serious about the rules."

Of course, a stronger Euro that has survived the Greek adventure can be bad news for the US dollar. Iran already takes Euros for oil. a lot of other world commerce might start taking place in Euros as well. My town will have a 4th of July parade, a reading of the Declaration of Independence (this is MA, so gotta be traditional) and, in place of fireworks (illegal here) a huge-O bonfire down at the beach.

Sadly, the town is jam-packed with Choom Boy and Lieawatha supporters, plus more Ghey Rights advocates that you'd expect in a town of 7000. They mix hard-core leftism with good old New England-style patriotism.

I've had trouble dealing with the disconnect between what the town does and reality every year. I think I'll give it all a miss this year.
