Late Hits: Why Were Liberal Democrats Raising Money For Darin LaHood?

Timothy P. Carney looks through LaHoods disclosures, old and new, and finds so many nuggets.

It's another battle pitting the K Street wing of the GOP against the Tea Party wing. LaHood's past and his donor list show his close ties with the Beltway lobbyist class.

LaHood first came to office when he was appointed to a vacant State Senate seat a few years ago. In 2011, running for his first full term in the State Senate, LaHood came to Washington for a fundraiser. The fundraiser was hosted by Democratic lobbyist Bernie Robinson, the former chief of staff to liberal Democrat James McGovern of Massachusetts.

Why would a chief of staff for a Massachusetts Democrat throw a fundraiser for a Republican state senate candidate? "Darin is my friend," Robinson said at the time. LaHood had worked in D.C. for years, as a congressional staffer and at the Justice Department. Robinson also has Illinois GOP ties, having been the state's lobbyist in Washington for two years when Republican George Ryan was governor.

Oh, and also Robinson was a transportation lobbyist who was lobbying the U.S. Department of Transportation, at that point run by LaHood's father.

Robinson is a partner at the Livingston Group lobbying firm. Among his practice areas, according to his bio on the firm's website, is "Transportation, Shipbuilding, Shipping and Ports."

It gets worse.

This proximity to K Street and big business is the norm for LaHood.

Comb through LaHood's PAC donors, and you see plenty of transportation PACs: Warren Buffett's BNSF railroad contributed the maximum $5,000 as did Caterpillar. The Union Pacific Corporation's PAC gave $2,500....

LaHood says he would vote against crony capitalism, including the Export-Import Bank, but his FEC filings suggest his donors don't believe that. The PACs for Boeing, Caterpillar, John Deere -- all top Ex-Im beneficiaries --- are all LaHood donors. Sean Mulvaney, who sits on the board of Ex-Im, also donated to LaHood.

K Street is coming out in droves for LaHood. Lobbyist Robinson has donated to LaHood again. Eight lobbyists from the Podesta Group --founded by Obama chief of staff John Podesta and run by John's brother Tony -- have donated to LaHood.

If we can't even win this one, then let's just never bother again.

No, and yes, ace.

A race that *should* go a certain way, based on the merits and the candidates, of course often does not (2012, ahemm). So Flynn losing, while it would be a travesty and a disaster for the country, would not be particularly meaningful.

Especially an off-cycle primary. In July.

But yes, in the sense that it is becoming difficult to see how anything really can be turned around - I mean big things - yes things are looking pretty hopeless.

Fellas, I've got a decent stock of ammo (and components, though I am amazed the handgun powder shortage continues into its 2nd year). But none of this is going to be settled by ballistics.

Look at the national reaction to the open, almost formal conversion last week of the SCOTUS into a farcical, arbitrary ruling body (Council of Guardians, a la Iran's Shi'a theocracy, is a perfect analogy and slander, think that was McCarthy's).

Right. There wasn't one. He we are. The least accountable part of the federal behemoth usurps authority to arbitrarily impose cultural changes, and also openly declares it is a super-legislature that doesn't judge laws for constitutionality or statutory meaning but actually does mark-ups on them, when it feels like it.

Not saying a majority, or even close, is OK with all of this. But they sit there. Their "representatives", mostly, sit there. Nothing happens. The ratchet turns a few giant clicks. And the hard steel of inertia ensures it ain't clicking back.

36 Don't kid yourselves, most of you will never give up, because you're not "quitters" despite being pissed off at all the retarded, sir, things that are happening now.

For your kids, your grandkids, the neighbors kids, don't ever give up. In the Dark Ages, there was Ireland. And when it was over, the books the Irish kept safe from darkness were brought out and led to enlightenment.

Humans are often vile and corrupt, but worth redemption, if we can hang on long enough.

37 When you look at the laws that get passed, and how they are enforced, you kinda get the feeling of who really runs the state.

Like casinos for example. Gambling is a recognized vice, and all the proponents who advocated for a state run lottery at ridiculous odds all said it would go no further than that and the take the state would get would go the schools. Ya, sure. And then the casinos were legalized to augment revenue for city and state governments.

Now when you read stories like this one, and see the lines of influence, it's impossible to ignore. The rich get richer, the poor get poorer, and the middle class is getting screwed. So, quick, let's allow in fifty million immigrants to do the work Americans refuse to do, and give them citizenship and the vote.

Torque, absolutely. No argument. People sometimes (accurately) point out that in most of the short history of relatively free presses, outlets/papers etc. were quite partisan. True. But today, there is no "partisan" media organization doing even the most basic due diligence or intelligent questioning on any of the big issues, and certainly not on the big personalities of the State. It's one side only - and that is almost entirely delusional nonsense.

Grey Fox, read that Fernandez piece. Um, meh? O-care is a disaster, of course - but the damage of the RobertsCare ukaz is to the entire legitimacy of the system, to the rule of law, it entirely destroys the function and meaning of the branches of govt. And, besides, the disaster of O-care will not lead to some intelligent alternative approach, if all of our past is any indication. That is the implicit implication of Fernandez's observation, and it's very unpersuasive.

And Greece and the EU? So what. Watch and see if this current drama leads to any material change in the worst elements of the Eurozone, or central bank meddling, or greedy stupid state-centric spending of other people's/generation's money. Don't think so.

86 i'm off to the green committee meeting for my local city council...

i'm the only sane adult in the room: the rest are all true global warming believers who want everyone else to live in tiny apartments and take public transit everywhere...

they, of course, live in suburban houses and drive expensive cars.

i told them i was totally into recycling, so they made me a member

what i didn't tell them was that i meant i reload my own ammo. ;-)

worst elements of the Eurozone, or central bank meddling, or greedy
stupid state-centric spending of other people's/generation's money.
Don't think so."

Interesting schisms are developing within the EU.

The loudest voices against the Greeks are the recent EU accessions who don't have per capita incomes anywhere close to French or German levels. And who refuse to shoulder more debt themselves to get others out of their own self-inflicted debt traps.

Their position is, hey, *we* are grinding it out and living with hard choices, and we're going to insist everyone else do so too.

It'll be very interesting when more of the original-bloc western EU nations end up being sternly lectured by current-bloc eastern EU members about fiscal discipline and trimming the welfare state.

LIB because let's face it, the apathetic, LIV's, MSM, and liberal mobs deserve what they have coming. Let them get think they're special. Let them get nice and comfy on that nipple right up to when the system collapses. Nothing educates like a socialist smash-up.

120 And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand?... The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt! If...if...We didn't love freedom enough. And even more, we had no awareness of the real situation.... We purely and simply deserved everything that happened afterward.

131 Since I know little about the players, I have no real dog in this fight. But I do find it interesting that so many of you fringe nuts think it is a target for your brand of hyperventilated conservatism.

I mean, it's Illinois, the district LaHood's Dad used to represent, and before him Bob Michel. Do you remember Bob Michel at all? He represented the district for decades, rose to leadership in the pre-Gingrich era, and was known for his ability to strike deals with Democrats (back then, it was possible to find reasonable Democrats).

There is no meaningful public polling. Maybe Flynn wins, maybe LaHood - hell, for all I know the other guy, the businessman, might beat them both. But you seem to have a lot emotionally invested here again.

I mention this because many times in the past, candidates you've counted on have turned out to really suck ass. Joe Miller, Sharron Angle, Christine O'Donnell, Richard Mourdock, Chris McDaniel. A bunch of real losers.

So if it turns out you've been foolish once more, don't do anything crazy. There is nothing wrong with you a few years of intensive electroshock therapy cannot help.

133 Muy interesante la historia de America de ustedes.

First, Franklin had to return home to America in 1775 to help her declare her independence and sovereignty and get men much younger than himself to fight his war for him, his mind being made up.
