Well, I assume they're racist anti-government neo-confederates who just want to kill minorities. The media has assured me that's the only reason a White, or White Hispanic, would want to own a gun.

That's kinda the way this one was. Once you got past the concertina wire, the claymores, and the interlocking zones of fire, it was actually very nice inside.
But your comment reminds me of my first business trip after leaving academia. My colleague and I arrived after dark in a taxi that navigated around discarded tires in the road to arrive at a Hilton with razor wire on top of a chain link fence too. We were ready for dinner, and the concierge looked at us urgently and said, "Don't leave the compound." We didn't.

No alarm clock, no coffeemaker, no pictures on the wall, towels that felt like paper towels, one tiny bar of soap, old tv with six channels(no remote, it was missing). Coffee in lobby which necessitated stairs because elevator wasn't working(two story motel). Truck stop next door with semi's running all night. Sheets you could see through, astroturf carpet with stains. Desk clerk who barely spoke english. Lost dollars in the vending machines.....
I would have been happier sleeping in the car. We paid over $80 a night for this privilege.

There were chicanos, Cubans, and Puerto Ricans, for sure, but no general "race" label for people from other Spanish-speaking lands. Usually when the person who died is a minority, then race will be mentioned if it is a crime like robbery, because the press will spin it as undue force being used. But not if it's a terrorist attack, since that would imply that Islam is not the religion of peace.
In this case the victim might be a minority, but the press might be hiding that, since if it were a minority, the couple might be perceived as racists using undue force, and the MFM wants to spare their fellow libjournalists that stigma.

New Mexico is a weird state, while they kinda vote democrat and the whole state is run like San Antonio and the St. Mary's alumni association, but it is a lot more like Idaho or Maine than any other place, and just as poor. And they sure don't have a problem with lethal force, there self defense laws are pretty different from other states but they were all written at a time when assassination was a regular feature of political life and the law was generally handled on a bounty and single gunfighter basis. Even in the early 1900s no one in power trusted anyone with a badge unless they were employing them personally, but they also wanted protection for their bodyguards. Now the New Mexicans, mostly hispanics, run the state themselves they are mostly of the macho rural kind with aristocrat pretensions, so see things the same way.
While there is no Castle Doctrine, it is one where you can use deadly force not just to protect property but also to stop a felony, which we don't even have in Texas. Sure they make liberal noises but it is a very different place than say Minnesota or even Wisconsin.
