If news CAC used to post before kicked us to the curb:

The two brightest planets are gliding closer together in the early evening sky, and their celestial dance culminates with an ultra-close pairing on June 30th.

Anyone who pays even cursory attention to the evening sky has surely noticed that the two brightest planets, Venus and Jupiter, have been drawing closer together in the west in the evening twilight.

But now the spectacle is taking an even more dramatic turn. on June 30th, Venus and Jupiter will appear so close together just 1/3 degree apart that they'll look like a tight, brilliant double star in the evening sky. You'll be able to cover both with the tip of an outstretched pinky finger.

http://tinyurl.com/putj5yh

Was a show stopper last night. Should be spectacular this evening.

"Dear Penthouse Letters. I never thought something like this could happen to me....":

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), a 2016 contender, reveals in his new book out Tuesday that he once watched pornography with Supreme Court justices while serving as a law clerk.

Cruz was clerking for then-Chief Justice William Rehnquist and recalls standing behind Rehnquist and Justice Sandra Day O'Connor in his book, A Time for Truth.

"We were in front of a large computer screen gazing at explicit, hard-core pornography," Cruz wrote, according to The Washington Post. "As we watched these graphic pictures fill our screens, wide-eyed, no one said a word. Except for Justice O'Connor, who lowered her head, squinted slightly, and muttered, 'Oh, my.'"

Books, also, were recalled and rewritten again and again, and were invariably reissued without any admission that any alteration had been made.

Even the written instructions which Winston received, and which he invariably got rid of as soon as he had dealt with them, never stated or implied that an act of forgery was to be committed: always, the reference was to slips, errors, misprints, or misquotations which it was necessary to put right in the interests of accuracy."

Meanwhile, this:

Chipotle has been handing out some provocative coupons at gay pride parades around the country.

The coupons are printed with the phrase "?Homo estas?" above a photo of a burrito. Below the burrito, there is text that reads, "Which way do you sway?" with arrows pointing to two buttons. One button reads "I eat tacos" and the other reads "I eat burritos."

Chipotle spokesman Chris Arnold said the company has used the tagline in support of Pride events for several years "and it has always been very well received in the LGBT community." "If there are some who find it insensitive, we certainly apologize for that," he told Business Insider.

I'm 6-2 and 230, but I wasn't considering firing from the shoulder. Just want unlimited mags, secured targets, and firing as long as the barrel heat will let me. Just need the release, that's all. No other response (or gun) feels like it would be enough this morning.

98 Circa - the F-4B Phantom II was a pure Navy design for an interceptor. It was designed to carry 4 AIM-7 Sparrow and 4 AIM-9 Sidewinders. That was its only original mission.

The F-111A was intended by the USAF to replace the F-105. A low level supersonic capable nuclear armed tactical bomber. Not to tangle with fighters.

The F-111B was supposed to take the AWG-9 and AIM-54 of the Navy Missileer program and cram it into the F-111 airframe. And thus create an interceptor to replace the F-4. Grumman got saddled with the task of adding a tailhook, FB-111 wings, a new shorter radome, and a myriad of other modifications. The TF30P-3 engines could be counted on maybe 25,000lbs of thrust from each. But the F-111B was severely overweight. Thus it had a Thrust to Weight ratio of of less than 0.5lbs of thrust per 1lb of airframe. Grumman tried WIP and SWIP to reduce weight but it was still a pig.

But McNamara thought F really meant Fighter and lo the decree was issued. And the Navy was stuck with a sow's ear called the F-111B.

They need to go back to the F-22 for now. Then someone needs to sit down with the Air Force and explain to them their roles (air supremacy, strategic bombing, and non-close combat tactical support). Then let the Army provide their own close combat tactical support and let the Navy/Marines develop aircraft that meet their needs.

As Vic pointed out, you can't build a do-it-all aircraft. It's like building a ship that can submerge, is an aircraft carrier, can fight surface engagements, and land on a beach.

139 I believe others have mentioned this but the only way forward if the SCOTUS is going to act as a super legislative body, then it should be representative of the 50 states.

To that end, the SCOTUS should be expanded to 50 and and each states legislature will propose a jurist. Obviously the president can select who he wants but the congress can simply refuse to approve those outside of those picked by the states.

Congress sets the number of SCOTUS members so this isn't an issue.

This maneuver would have to be undertaken when the GOP controlled congress and the presidency but I think this has a more realistic shot then a convention of the states.

We need 38 states to ratify anything out of a convention and we simply do not and will not have the required number to pass any meaningful amendments, I'm not saying don't try but an Article V is simply not the magic bullet.

151 The UK MoD even had a White Paper proving that missile armed interceptors were the only way wars would be fought in the future.

Then Vietnam came along for the Americans who believed the same thing. Hence the F-4B/C/D Phantom IIs lacked an internal gun. But the Communists had never read those papers and when the furballs erupted the Americans were firing two AIM-7s at one target in the hope one would hit or even ignite, IIRC the AIM-7 success rate was about 7%. Even the AIM-9B would go erratic and miss. And once the Phantoms went Winchester all they could do was run away. Plus because of the missiles only mindset, tactics and training did not factor a gun into the mix.

Which meant the cannon and Sidewinder armed F-8 Crusaders became the MiG killing champs when looking at loss ratio.

158 With the advent of missiles such as Meteor, with comparable Russian and Chinese systems emerging, the real challenge in fighter jets isn't dogfighting.

It's BVR engagements, beyond visual range, getting killed by a jet way the hell off in the distance that lofts an ultrafast supermaneuverable homing missile.

Stealth has repeatedly been touted as the way to avoid getting killed in a BVR fight. If you're unseen you'll live.

Except that the F-35 brings one thing to the table stealthwise. Radar stealth. In other aspects, such as its infrared signature, the F-35 isn't stealthy at all. And can't be made better in its IR output due to constrained design issues. Meanwhile, IRST, infrared search and track, is the fastest progressing airborne sensor technology.

Hence the F-4B/C/D Phantom IIs lacked an internal gun. But the
Communists had never read those papers and when the furballs erupted the
Americans were firing two AIM-7s at one target in the hope one would
hit or even ignite, IIRC the AIM-7 success rate was about 7%. Even the
AIM-9B would go erratic and miss. And once the Phantoms went Winchester
all they could do was run away. Plus because of the missiles only
mindset, tactics and training did not factor a gun into the mix.

Which meant the cannon and Sidewinder armed F-8 Crusaders became the MiG killing champs when looking at loss ratio.

.We pulled the same stupid stuff with ships too. Missile only armed Cruisers like the Long Beach. What a joke.

222 "What we actually need are more carriers and air wings."

The Navy repeatedly reminded Clowngress of the rule of threes when it comes to aircraft carriers.

If you own three CVN, then at any given time, one is deployable (or underway), one is in pre-deployment workup, one is in refit.

Clowngress mandated by law that there be 12 CVN total, to hence provide three immediately deployable carriers at all times. Then only provided enough funding for 11 big decks.

Contradictions. How do they work?

The Navy said, uh, got a problem here. Clowngress said, oh, okay, you big sillies, you can go down to eleven carriers if you have to. We're sure there will be no problem.

Fast forward to a short while ago. A carrier battle group sailed home from the Indian-Ocean-slash-Persian-Gulf area, and was replaced on station by... nothing. Because there were only two available carriers.

Clowngress threw an infantile tantrum. Shrieking indignant butthurt. This is an outrage! Who is responsible for this huge lapse in America's capabilities! We demand answers at once!

Well, the Clowngress is responsible.

And this is with the GOP in charge of the shop. Sad.

Marbury v Madison may not have "caused" this, but it certainly set the stage. Much like the saying "No one became an alcoholic without taking their first drink," if the Supreme Court doesn't assume the right of Judicial Review, and leaves it to the States (where it belongs IMO), then a whole host of ills goes away.

There were certainly other steps along the way, each one making it harder to go back. The Civil War was one- the end of Federalism, and the beginning of a National government. Roe v Wade was another- the making up, out of whole cloth, of a "right" which does not exist in the Constitution. I'm sure the Horde can come up with a laundry-list of others.

243 "The Osprey had some developmental issues and bad press but it is a damn fine aircraft and very valuble".

It fills a niche that nothing else does.

It's also exorbitantly expensive, costing more per flight-hour than almost any other airframe in the inventory -- say, anyone remember when the Marine Corps had a culture of prudent frugality? -- and it has a nasty habit of crashing. Bad crashes. Most recently the lethal one in Hawaii.

Class A mishaps used to be defined as $1M in damage to the airframe. The threshold was raised by the USMC brass to $2M simply to keep down the number of Class A incidents involving the Osprey.

Of course, if he'd fight back earlier, he could probably reduce the damage he has to do, but that never seems to occur to people.

Maybe there's a lesson there.

248 if the Supreme Court doesn't assume the right of Judicial Review, and leaves it to the States (where it belongs IMO)

------

M v M had nothing to do with the states. I honestly do not understand how people have a problem with judicial review. Our chief complaint against Roberts is that he did not properly exercise judicial review over Obamacare. If Congress and the President pass a law that is contrary to the Constitution - the Constitution must control - as it is supreme. That law cannot be stand as it is extra Constitutional. That is judicial review.

Usurping the democrat process through the guise of substantive due process is not judicial review.

There is no doubt the Court and others have wrongly used M v. M to assert judicial supremacy. But judicial review is implied through the supremacy clause.

254 "But the left has learned the right's great secret - we won't fight."

The right will fight.

The GOP will not.

No longer synonymous.

It's a replay of the worst of the 1970s.

With America in retreat and decline on all fronts internationally, decay and chaos on the domestic front, conservatives sounding the alarm, and the establishment Republicans serenely saying,

"Let's not be hasty here. And by all means, let's not lose our heads and allow a dangerous extremist figure like Reagan to gain power within the party. Sensible moderation must be the watchword."

256 Oblather wants salaried employees to be paid overtime. I guess he will just wave his magic wand and make it thus.>>>

The
company I work for used to calculate the hourly rate on the salaried
employees checks based on weekly hours. Talk about a demotivational
tool.

he is an idiot and does not understand federal law.
Per FLSA a manager, which is strictly defined, is not someone who does something, he is someone who directs. As such his hours must be more flexible and has to be the sort of position that comes in off hours to fix issues.
Paying a non-management position a salary that does not account to at least minimum wage and OT for the hours worked is a serious issue, and can rack up thousands in penalties.

Make employers pay OT to managers and you now have destroyed all management positions that are not also officers of the corporation.
Everyone becomes an hourly worker, just some with management skills are "lead-workers". All that extra responsibility and prestige and job-skills that could transfer to another company or another position are now gone. People with extra skills are kept back to actually do useful work so the ass-clown drinking buddies and toadies to the upper management can get the management spots.
It will be just like most federal agencies.

258 When I was a kid, I never understood how old people were so nonchalant about death and dying.....not really upset about the prospect of passing on. I am beginning to understand how someone could say "I have seen enough. I am not able to be a part of this ghastly world. There is nothing here for me any longer." They weren't saying it with bitterness, just a sort of sweet resignation.

I ain't quite ready yet, but I am beginning to understand my grandparents and their friends having had enough of this shit. We are going to Hell on a sled.

I am full of DOOM this morning.

259 Boeing was shopping some sweet F-15 upgrades a couple of years ago, and I bet the F-15 STOL/MTD demonstrator with canards could kick the @ss of anything else up there today in a dogfight. Navy's pretty screwed, but maybe they can re-re-re-re upgrade the F-18s again. I don't know what the status of the Growlers (electronic warfare F-1 is, but I suspect they'd help for jamming and such.
