So, Donald Trump

Republicans are starting to get kind of freaked out about this whole Trump thing.

“Donald Trump is like watching a roadside accident,” said former George W. Bush press secretary Ari Fleischer. “Everybody pulls over to see the mess. And Trump thinks that’s entertainment. But running for president is serious. And the risk for the party is he tarnishes everybody.”

Those risks were amplified this week after a trio of polls showed him likely to earn a coveted invitation to the party’s debates, which ironically were restructured with the very goal of avoiding the circus-like atmosphere of 2012. Giving Trump a major platform just as the country is tuning in is not exactly the Big Tent the party’s bigwigs had in mind..

“I’m not excited about somebody as divisive as Trump or somebody as obnoxious as Trump being on the debate stage,” one RNC member confessed.

First, a bit of throat clearing: Trump is an ass. He's a liberal. He's not going to be President or even the nominee.

With that out of the way, contra that RNC member, I'm giddy at the prospect of the GOP having to deal with Trump.

He's very valuable in one key way, holding a mirror up to what is wrong with the GOP. The "serious" candidates are awful. They are milquetoast.

John Kasich and Marco Rubio...hey, SCOTUS ruled on gay marriage, move on.

Jeb Bush...nuke the filibuster to get rid of ObamaCare? Gee, I don't know let me think about that.

Scott Walker says he'd nuke the filibuster to repeal ObamaCare but his personality isn't exactly...electrifying.

Trump is a clown but he's says things people are feeling. I know conservatives hate the whole "I have feels!" thing but guess what...people do. You need to acknowledge them, reflect them and connect with them.

Republican candidates are far more at home in the boardroom or the congressional hearing room than the living room and it shows in the candidates they keep picking.

Remember how Romney got crushed on the very important "cares about people like me" metric? I bet Trump, for all his money, scores off the charts on that.

Rubio probably comes closest but as you saw in his reaction to the SSM decision, he's really most passionate about amnesty, how much he loves America and a hawkish foreign policy. He never really talks about smaller government or out of control government. He just wants to be the rationale manager of it.

Unless and until the GOP can find a candidate who hits the sweet spot of being seen as a plausible President and caring about people's lives, it's going to be in big trouble.

7 I would never vote for Trump, but I'm all for him being on the debate stage, if only for the hilarity that is like to ensue.

"Romney wanted to bet Perry $10,000 in 2012. Pocket change. I'll bet any of you $100 million, to the charity of the winners choice, that I'm right and you're wrong. Not only because I really believe in what I'm saying, but because I'm fabulously wealthy, due to my off the charts financial brilliance."

And the other 20 or so people running are mostly clowns and/or corrupt aristocrats anyways, so what difference does one extra clown/ corrupt aristocrat really make? Especially if he's funny?

Seriously? Romney was the perfect candidate for the Dems to run against because he was a walking liberal caricature of Republicans. If anything, Trump is worse. Romney is a rich white businessman. Trump is a rich white businessman whose catchphrase is "You're fired."

That's not the kind of guy that "cares about people like me." That's the kind of guy that cares about money.

25 There are a great many clusters of low-hanging ideological fruit that the Party of Stoopid are ignoring, to their and the country's great peril.

Fr'instance: how come they're constantly ignoring the deficit? No American household can continue to function economically as this government is currently doing. Who the fuck gets to spend 150% or more of its income every single day? How does that even begin to make sense? Therein lies the perfect reason and justification for dismantling the World's Largest Organization (TM).

But is anyone in the GOPe field making that argument? If they are, I sure haven't heard it. The economy is dragging along the bottom, yet no one other than Cruz is even mentioning it.

Unless and until somebody decides to start talking about the things that are negatively affecting the majority of Americans and comes up with concrete ways to fix them, this will not change. There is no future that includes ignoring reality for long.

26 I really don't think any of these candidates has a snowballs chance in hell of defeating any of the Democrat nominees.

We've reached a tipping point politically and culturally where once the word liberal was considered the worst thing to be called or labeled, it's now conservstive.

We are now a center-left country going ever leftward.

I don't see how that turns around.

34 One mild correction, Drew: teh Donald is not just saying what people are "feeling" (I know the HQ disdain for expressing "feelings"), but what they know.

For example: we know damn well that he -- alone in the world of wannabe preezys -- is telling the truth about the illegals that are flooding the country. In fact, to make a short story shorter, I have yet to hear him say anything (at least during his "campaign") that isn't true.

Which puts him far ahead of all the rest, from Choom Boy and Hitlery to The Cruz Missile and Marco Woobio and Jeb!.

Trump stands up for his own clownish self, not whining about what others "do to him" but asserting himself. If Scooty Walker got in a tiff with Oooooneeeveeeshun, he'd fold like a cheap suit.

So, far all his many faults, I think it's time to cut Trump a break. He's a nutcase, but by G*d, he's probably a far better American than 535 Congresscrooks, a dozen would-be presidents and one current president.

105 Just my two drachmas, but it seems to me we ought to be looking at this from a broader standpoint. I'd bet few of us are totally locked into a single candidate to the exclusion of all others; instead, we have them all sorted into strata. I'll put mine out on public display to start the conversation:

My front-runners: Ted Cruz, Rick Perry

My second tier that I could still vote for without major qualms: Scott Walker, Bobby Jindal... depending on my mood, Marco Rubio.

Don't like 'em but glad they're in the race: Carly Fiorina, Donald Trump. Trump would be an awful President, but he's speaking about issues I want to have addressed. Fiorina, I don't think she's ready for primetime, but for as long as she's in the race, she will be on the attack, and that's worth the price of admission.

Flat-out not getting my vote if they're the candidate: Chris Christie, Mike Huckabee, Jeb Bush.

Where he's right, he's very right and when he's wrong, he's gawdawful wrong: Rand Paul. The stars would have to line up just right to sell me on him, and the spectre of his father... 'nuff said.

It would be nice if some genius could synthesize everybody's preference strata and calculate the ideal candidate, but not holding my breath.

Since the age of Obama, I have disabused myself of the notion that extreme proficiency in cool, rational debate is what we should strive for. That we should stick to the facts and sober analysis.

Provocative rhetoric is clearly the way to go. Sure the facts are on our side (Math, Science, Reality), but we're going to be labeled as racist, sexist, denialist, and H8erz!

So the only way is to simply turn everything, and I do mean EVERYTHING into an attack. A relatively vicious one at that. Never, EVER answer a question directly, find the nearest Leftist analogue and attack, attack, and attack again. Say "Democrat Plantations" and name an inner city. Use "Fat Cat" and name Big name Donk donors and corporations. Talk about the 1% and toss off more big Dem names. Talk about the Donks destroying the big three entitlements to buy votes, "They don't care about the elderly or minorities, they only want their votes." Hell, that's mild.

The list of things is endless. Do NOTHING but hammer Democrat policy failures and hypocrisy. NEVER answer a charge or accept a question's premise.

This is pathetic, but even though the facts are on our side, we just keep losing on style.

Being known as the party of bloodless technocrats and weaselly double-talkers doesn't seem to resonate, whereas the guy who gets reactions like "OMG can you believe he said that!!! And he can't do mine. That doesn't mean I'm smarter than him. It darn sure doesn't mean I'd be a better neurosurgeon than would be.

The only thing I have to go off of politically as regards Ben Carson is what he's said about political matters. There, he has views on the Second Amendment which raise concern, and admits to ignorance on many issues (Right of Return is one, IIRC) in which the President cannot afford to be ignorant.

Between that, and a lack of a record, I am less than willing to support Carson in the primaries- and I sincerely doubt he'll make it to the nomination.

I haven't even *heard* Fiorina's political rhetoric, so I can't make a judgement there, but her resume at HP leaves much to be desired.

That said- just like I want Trump in the debates, I want those two in the debates. I think someone said it above, but it makes it much, much harder (though not impossible, certainly) for the MFM (delenda est) to make the narrative: "Oh, the GOP is the party of rich old white people!"

And that's a good thing.

I'm all for amping up style (see above), but the hard fact is that the GOP has been losing on substance for years as well. The facts may be on the side of conservatives, but the GOP hasn't been on "our" side for a long time.

The facts are that Part D, Amnesty, ObamaCare, endless ill-thought interventions abroad, "globalization" and other cronyist, corporatist fiscal policies that enrich the top 1% while the lower classes' wages stagnate and their jobs evaporate are bad for every American but the Uniparty commissars, apparatchiks, donors and chattering-class toadies.

What's this bullshit all about? Trashing all R candidates before we see anything from them. Who's your PERFECT candidate? The way the system is setup, we only get two (maybe three) choices in the general.

I like Cruz and Walker, but doubt they will get the nomination. But I don't TRASH the other (R)'s because we need them all to DEFEAT the (D).

It's like your family saying, "we're all going out to eat Mexican food." You say, "well I only eat burgers," and week after week they pick food choices that don't align with your ONE AND ONLY WISH, BURGERS. So you starve...

3. Likewise, Trump will speak his mind on the issues, tell the LSM to fuck themselves on taking sides, and explain why his ideas are better than everyone else's ideas. The idea of him politely (or not so politely) pouring scorn all over the Demokrats' platform on live TV (and probably picking up 20% approval) is appealing.

But it is a hugely diverse and surprisingly young group...well younger than the dem bench, at least. Yeah and a fully loaded Ford F150 is $50K. It's not about the cost, it's that the type of person who buys a Lexus SUV is a Democrat, usually.

Jeepster. You're a young man, aren't you?
Now that I think about it, were I a moderator, I would make that a question. Anyone who could not make a reasonable comment regarding the Jeepster, would be tossed out of the race. That would have saved us from Barry.

But would it kill these guys to win an elected office first to show us he can win in front of voters? Even a Congressional seat?

At the end of the day, I don't think he couldn't handle the job, I just think he couldn't handle a real Presidential campaign.

He's already stepped in it with saying some pretty outlandish, liberal things regarding gun control. For a grassroots candidate, that's not a good sign.

He seems though like a decent fellow, I just don't like gimmick candidates

Defend that assertion, please. What is the material difference if Jeb is President instead of Hillary? Rubio? I think you'll find very few here who "trash" Walker, or Cruz, and we mostly think that Trump, Carson, and Fiorina are simply not viable (as in- won't make it very far into the primaries), no "trashing" required.

So, of the ones we *do* actually "trash" (Jeb, Rubio, Graham, and a couple others), please tell the class what the material difference is between them and Hillary.

Please show your work.

Explain to me why the Army could not have maintained the Air Corps.

That said- "Army and Navy" were the only military forces in existence in any country at the time. Though if you insist on a Constitutional Amendment to add an Air Force, I'm good with that, too. The rules exist, and we should follow them.

Who does need a Federal Railroad administration?

Who does need a Federal "National Guard." Let the States have their "well regulated militia(s)."

491 Terrible Solution.
Have the local JP wave his hand over you and sign the doc. The church can have the religious ceremony. There were no marriage license required until the 17th century and then it was only a way get additional fees.

------

So it is not the Consitution but whether you like the agency?
---------
No, those three listed agencies were created by Congress as per Constitution ability to handle needful things, and are not a danger to the long-term of the health of the Republic. And neither the National Guard, National Bear Chasers, or the Coast Guard has been used by Statists to club us like the EPA has been used. Sure, we could fold the Air Force back into the Army and be constitutional in the technical sense, but it wouldn't change the "peace is our profession" mission of the flyboys and rocket crews.

493 "It's like your family saying, "we're all going out to eat Mexican food."
You say, "well I only eat burgers," and week after week they pick food
choices that don't align with your ONE AND ONLY WISH, BURGERS. So you
starve..."

Here's how that analogy applies to the GOP.

Voter: I want burgers.

GOP: OK. let's go get burgers.

....driving... pulls over, picks up a guy in a suit riding shotgun and two illegals crowd into the back with you....

GOP: "Hey amigos, what do you want"

Three dudes you don't know: "We all want Mexican!"

GOP: "Mexican it is."

Voter: "Can we still stop for burgers."

GOP: "Nope. You're outvoted, this is a democracy. I can leave you by the highway if you like, or if you want to buy for everyone, we'll let you share some Mexican with us."

494 TRUMP ~CARSON 2016~~~~~~CRASS and CLASS!

Not politicians! Yeah.

BOTH a part of the national image for very different reasons.

BOTH say what they mean.

BOTH love this country. FIORINA Secretary of STATE! All of the above true about her as well.

495 Trump has the same appeal that Christie did back when he first became the Gov of NJ - Christie was something of a blowhard, even then, but he wouldn't accept stupidity, wouldn't back down from a fight and would tell you exactly what he thought. Trump seems to have a similar personality and that's exactly what the vast majority of the candidates this time lack (I'd give Cruz a possible exception, as he seems like he'll fight). I'd like to think Walker has fight in him too but he'll never be as brash as Trump and I do believe in this day and age, we want a candidate who's a little brash.

496 "Unless and until the GOP can find a candidate who hits the sweet spot of
being seen as a plausible President and caring about people's lives,
it's going to be in big trouble."

Any suggestions, Drew?

498 "Any suggestions, Drew?"

Not speaking for Drew, no suggestions - the GOP is in big trouble. If you assembled the ideal conservative candidate from everyone currently running, you wouldn't have a game-changer, if only because the rest of the party would fight Reagan 2016 tooth and nail throughout their administration. At best they'd accomplish just enough to lure everyone away from the lifeboats and back onto the dance floor, and we'd merrily resume ramming speed toward the fiscal iceberg in 2024 - "c'mon, we've had 8 years of austerity and the recession is (finally) over, let's spend more money!!!"

Politics as usual isn't working. People don't understand the grim realities lurking beneath the surface. A third party is only one step - Article V deserves support as well.

Rather than writing stinging dissents and getting back to business, we'd have been better off if Thomas, Scalia and Alito resigned in protest after writing dissents about the whole process as well as the case at hand. We need people who are willing to take bold steps. We need people who place integrity and reality above careerism and call the rotten system out for what it has become. It's about time someone on SCOTUS blew the whistle - they're legislators, not judges.

Two years ago, the exact same justices ruled that gay marriage was a matter for the states. They haven't "evolved" - they're merely pandering to public opinion. If that's going to be their compass, let them stand for elections and serve defined terms like other lawmakers.

To the inevitable Adjoran choir who'll rant about how stooopid it is to
walk away from power like that, I'll refer to Atlas Shrugged - unless
and until Rearden and Taggart walked away, their presence legitimized
the corrupt regime to the people and kept the kleptocrats in business.

500 Question: when people claim they are not Republicans or have left the party, what business is our debate situation of theirs?

Watch it, fine, review performances, fine - but you have no say at all in how our debates are structured or who is invited. That's part of leaving an organization, Zippy.

So butt out.

503 "nuke the filibuster to get rid of ObamaCare?"

So incredibly ignorant.

Obamacare passed under RECONCILIATION rules - simple majority. Therefore, simple majority to repeal.

Boehner, McConnell, and several SCOTUS Justices are on record recognizing this fact.

Don't need 60+ Senators in 2017 for full repeal. All we need is 50+ Senators (or 50 exactly and the VP) and a POTUS to sign the bill and we've got full repeal. Under Reconciliation Rules we need a CBO score showing the bill to repeal will reduce the deficit, but considering the vastly increased estimates on O-Care spending, and reduced estimates on its revenues, that shouldn't be difficult at all. Plus, of course, no reason it has to be a "clean" bill - could add in anything at all that reduces spending or increases revenues to ensure a CBO score that shows deficit reduction.
