23 So, I was out with Tenthette and the kids yesterday afternoon walking a "nature area" in town (because outside under the trees was cooler than my house - it sucks when your AC dies in Texas in summer), and I noticed deadwood all over the place.

And I realized two things: if I recommended that all that deadwood and undergrowth be cleared, a) I'd be called a Gaia hater and raper of the environment, b) one good lightning strike is all it would take to burn the whole area to the ground right now- and I live where heat-lightning is a thing.

But yes, there is something to be said for burning up old undergrowth and dead trees.

Exactly. Their options are to a) donate / support the wrong people (or no one) and get destroyed by the government OR b) donate/ support the RIGHT people and get crony hand outs and regulations written in such a way to harm their competition while helping them.

Really a no brainer. For a $1,000,000 investment, you can get a massive return if you just "invest" in the right politicians / issues.

You've noticed that too, haven't you? Goes back to what Ace posted a couple years ago about Jung and magical thinking being inherent in the human condition. When people banish religion, they don't get rid of the magical thinking, they just give it free reign to latch onto something else. That thing is usually government.

Given the history of benevolent governments, and the history of deities, I'll take deities any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Posted by: Washington Nearsider, Keeper of the Guards at June 29, 2015 10:34 AM (fwARV)

Possible. But I see it more as a "look, there are so many around the world who associate our flag with imperialism, racism, patriarchy. People abroad and at home. It no longer represents freedom. So we should rebrand out flag..."

And that way they don't have to "ban" anything.

Then in, say, 5 years, they'll say "well, obviously the people who still fly the old flag are making a political statement about how much they hate black people." or something, and it will be a social shaming.

Then, eventually, yeah, maybe a ban. Or maybe just societal pressure.

That's my guess at least.

Well the only reason you support the old flag is because you're a neanderthal racist who hates black people and loves imperialism and blowing up brown people around the world.

All tolerant people respect that others view the US Flag in a different light than maybe they or their parents did. Why go out of your way to insult people, when you can just fly a new flag? Tolerance requires us to not get in peoples faces with something that is so insulting to some.

Most of us, at the end of the day, don't really care that much about the tiny subset of the 2% of the population that is gay that wants to get married. Not really a big thing (in the short term, if you will) for most people.

Conservatives are hampered by their view of "law" as having a moral/ethical/traditional foundation to enable people to exist relatively peacefully in a complex society.
Progressive are more practical and realize that in the right hands (theirs), the "law" can be easily divorced for any semblance of morality, ethics, or tradition and used very effectively as a political bludgeon to bash the opposition into a weak ineffectual force while furthering the progressive agenda.

And our idiot GOP never really vets any of "our" nominees, because "litmus tests" are so icky so we get a Roberts. I'm still amazed, and thankful, that Scalia and Thomas survived the process.

The Dems discreetly vet the ever loving crap out of any of their nominees so that there is less than a 1 in a million chance they will not be in absolute lock-step with the progressive agenda du jour. Then, at crunch time, our GOP useful idiots (McCain, Graham, Hatch, etc.) say well, elections have consequences (at least when Democrats win) so the President deserves to get his appointees approved, and they vote for another card-carrying progressive political appointee.

And, yes, citizens would die. And, yes, SWAT teams would be brought in. But there are more of us than there are of them, and people *will* defend their guns. "You can take my gun from my cold, dead hands" is not just a pithy statement.

5 Steal all your entertainment

195 Conservatives are hampered by their view of "law" as
having a moral/ethical/traditional foundation to enable people to exist
relatively peacefully in a complex society.
Progressive are more
practical and realize that in the right hands (theirs), the "law" can be
easily divorced for any semblance of morality, ethics, or tradition and
used very effectively as a political bludgeon to bash the opposition
into a weak ineffectual force while furthering the progressive agenda.
