29 The homily from Fr Tim this morning was one he said he did not wish to speak, but that the archbishop had ordered that the same message be spoken at all masses.

He said that we can expect to be persecuted, and that we can expect to be called haters. Then he said that we need to show those who persecute us, who will declare us haters and outcasts, who we are by demonstration of our faith.

As sometimes is the case at Sunday morning mass, a family was all together in the front pews, in support of a young couple with a baby, all there for a baptism. The second third of the mass began with the baptism, and I thought, how significant this is at this particular mass.

We all recited the baptismal vows along with the family, "Do you reject satan . . . "

All I could see in my mind during that litany were the faces of Obama, Ginsberg, her Latina girlfriend, and Kagan. The others were fuzzy.

Satan.

I now live in what used to be coal mining country. Maybe we can make catacombs out of the underground spaces.

And yes, there will be martyrs.

Why Democrats? Based on a study just done right in my head, a overwhelming number of Republicans let the military do their job when decision is finally reached to do something.. Democrats decide first ( for show) and then demand to ok each trigger pull. Too harsh?

41 Did a little New Hampshire day trip with the wife. At the end we were looking for ice cream when she spied a shop at the last second and I missed the entrance. Turned left at the next intersection to turn around, and lo and behold there was a building right there with a big ol' "Guns and Ammo" sign.

Pulled into their lot for just a quick little look see. Spied a GSG STG44 .22 on the wall. Looked good, felt solid (nine and a half pounds solid). Price was a bit under $400. This piece has been on my radar for a while.

"Ah", I thought, "But the magazines are a bit pricey, I think."

Owner sees me checking it out, says, "And I've got plenty of mags over there."

I look at a box full of mags priced at $20.

"Hmmm. This rifle has the ten round mag. Are those 25-rounders? Any chance I can swap the ten for a 25?"

"Sure, we can do that."

OK, at this point, the Universe is screaming at me to buy this rifle. It's kismet. I walk out with the rifle and two spare mags. $438 total, with no sales tax.

When I get home, I look online and discover the mags are $39.99. Damn, shoulda bought a couple more.

By the time I got home to Maine, the trunk contained three half-price Laconia Harley Bike Week t-shirts, four bottles of liquor, and a semi-automatic rifle. If not for free porn on the Internet I'd have looked for an adult video store to complete the AoS Lifestyle Scavenger Hunt.

My little boy escaped that nasty prison to turn his life around. He began as a Boy Scout and ended up in prison because someone tried to take advantage and he defended himself.

He was well on his way to graduating 9th grade when he was threatened for not joining the escape plan. That nasty woman teased my little boy by offering him sexual favors, and when he smelled the cooter after a long absence, he decided he wanted more and was compelled to escape.

re: the 30 mm Stryker

Apparently it's a rush job hack because the pantry is bare at USAREUR:

the 2nd Cavalry wants 81 of its eight-wheel-drive Stryker infantry carrier vehicles fitted with 30 millimeter automatic cannon.

The 2nd Cavalry wants the weapons because its the Armys frontline force in Europe. There are only two US combat brigades still based on the continent, the 2nd Cav in Vilseck, Germany and the 173rd Airborne in Vicenza, Italy, a light infantry formation with very few vehicles of any kind and nothing as heavy as a Stryker. The Army has no heavy tank forces permanently stationed in Europe anymore, which the House Armed Services Committee has decried as short-sighted.

The Left, for many years now, have been trying to "reform" the US justice and prison system on the grounds they are racist.

It's all bullshit, of course.

But back in the olden days, young men were given the option: Serve or serve time. I believe that option has been off the table for a long time, ever since the liberal-leftists infiltrated the US justice system.

So of course incarceration rates are gonna be impacted! But that's the Left's M.O. That's Alinsky.

I've been waiting for the Army to mount the Oto Melara 60mm gun on the Stryker. This isn't a T14 killer, and maybe not even a T-72 killer, but it will handle everything else (including T-55s/T-62 in the ME and Africa).

Add a laser designator and a TOW or Javelin rail to the turret side, with 5 or so reloads in the chassis, and the system is ready for almost anything.

You just gotta love weapons systems designed, spec'd and developed by the "smartest people in the room", none of whom have ever spent a day in combat. But the important thing is the cronies got a good return on
their investment (campaign donations), a lot of retired admirals and
generals got cushy jobs at DOD contractors, and the military's capabilities
were diminished--a liberal trifecta.

From just what I saw it is a explosive anti personnel round which would be virtually useless against armor..

I have seen some of the aar's from the 1st Gulf War where Bradleys had confirmed kills against Iraqi T-55's. All of involve surprise on part of the Bradleys and multiple rounds need to complete the kill.

I would personally suggest to the Pentagon that if you want to fight Tanks, do it with Tanks yourself. Or Nukes.

Good either way.

The upgun on the Stryker isn't for tanks. It's to give a longer reach and bigger punch against BMPs and Slav technicals.

Tanks, with the current forces, get serviced with ATGMs and air delivered weapons. Which assumes air superiority, but one problem at a time.

There's an HE round, and then there's an AP round.

Early M242 25mm APFSDS-T ammo used a tungsten penetrator. The improved M919 APFSDS-T used.... a penetrator that they didn't tell us what it was made of. The suspicion was DU, of course.

Same deal with the M44 30mm gun. Two different ammo feeds on each gun. You just choose what you want to shoot. AP or HE.

Low - "pushing" in anticipation of the recoil

Left - tell me you're not pulling the trigger with your knuckle instead of the ball of the finger

Possible cure - a penny. Put the penny on top of the slide on an empty weapon. Cock and "fire" making sure you don't let the penny move. Repeat until the penny stays nice and still. Now load live rounds and "remember the penny"

For those desiring a primer on modern military gun ammunition (i.e., more than rifle/MG ammo), I offer this link:

http://www.quarryhs.co.uk/

This link:
http://www.quarryhs.co.uk/WLIP.htm
has cut aways of relatively modern 30-40mm AP projectiles, a comparison of 30-40mm guns, a cutaway of an armor plate that has been hit my a fin-stabilized projectile, and much more.

This link:
http://www.quarryhs.co.uk/miltech.htm
has lots of resources

This link:
http://www.quarryhs.co.uk/tankammo.html
has pictures of dummy rounds (that, apparently, the author has collected), from the German 7.92mm rifle cartridge to the Oto Melara 60mm round, plus cut-aways. If you've ever wondered about the relative size of cartridges, here are several lineups.

There are also links to aircraft cannon

This link:
http://www.quarryhs.co.uk/ammotables.htm
has links to data, roughly correct, for most tank ammunition (up to 128mm)

There is, of course, much more. Anna and WW2 specialists will likely be lost for hours ...

235 Okay. The 30mm first three-four rounds hit and explode reactive armor, becoming, in the process, less effective as penetrators. That leaves a hole, or a couple of holes in the reactive armor array. The next four or five rounds might find the hole(s). If not, the next five.
Then it's scoot.
That was the plan, shoot and scoot, with the Hellcat TD which Churchill thought would prevail with speed and cunning maneuvers. But, sometimes, you need to take a hit.

284 249 Hi JTB
I shoot a 260 Remington for mid range (600 yds and under) and a 6.5-284 for long range (800-1000 yds). The rifles end up being all custom by the time they're done. My MR gun is built on Rem 700 action (Defiance Machine - Deviant Model) and the LR gun is built on a plain ol' Savage short action.

I'm about 30 minutes from Quantico - I live in VIrginia just outside of DC, but mostly shoot at Bridgeville in Delaware which finally opened a 1000 yd range a few years ago. The match shooting program at Quantico is not very active as far as I can tell.

Absolutely hand load.

On May 10, military forces from the Libyan government attacked a cargo ship named Tuna-1, registered in the Cook Islands and owned by a Turkish company, while the ship was off the coast of Libya between Tobruk and Dernah. Dernah is under the control of ISIL militants and the Libyan government claimed that the ship was approaching Dernah, and despite warnings the ship continued on its path, raising concerns that it may be smuggling arms into Libya.

I always get him confused with John Barnes for some reason. I can't stand Barnes either, so maybe that's what it is. But I went through a period where I absolutely refused to not finish a book I had started, so I've read quite enough Brin and Barnes. I think it was L. Ron Hubbard who finally broke me of that habit.

Anna, Hrothie, I too have seen the movie without reading the book. Try not to hate. I just put it on my library list.

I checked out "Il Postino" prepared to laugh at the flick since it had such a bad reputation, and I ended up enjoying it. Costner is sort of an old school Hollywood actor without a lot of "layers" or political baggage, and for that reason he's often dismissed. Liked him in "The Guardian" too.

310 Weasel, Thanks for the information. I consider 200 to 300 yards as long range but that is mostly cast bullet loads out of military surplus bolt actions and 45-70 black powder cartridges. (There's also the matter of aging eyes and a less than stellar level of marksmanship.)

I had assumed you would be using 30 caliber stuff at that distance. From reading I'm not surprised about the Rem. 700 action.

Good luck out west.

I am actually enjoying the book, even though I think it is too close to home! On thing is that even in the 1300's England had had some time to build up a societal structure that more or less work.
