You scolded someone in YOUR thread for making a comment. With this simple and easy Open Thread you no longer have to scold commenters, drive away visitors, and take food out of Ace's kid's mouths. Wasn't that easy? Posted by: Soothsayer's Lovin Spoonful at June 28, 2015 01:26 PM (5jPLo) Posted by: Soothsayer's Lovin Spoonful at June 28, 2015 01:27 PM (5jPLo) 5

It is very clear that what drives traffic away from this blog is (1) no content and (2) a-holes commenters. Have a nice day. Posted by: Y-not at June 28, 2015 01:28 PM (RWGcK) 6

You did something that even Ace never does, which is give a commenter -- a visitor to the blog -- a hard time for making a comment in a comment thread. And I'm the bad guy. All I said was put up an open thread and then Everyone will be happy. But noooo, I get this. So Greek banks will be closed until after the vote because they have used all the EU emergency funds.

Apologies for my own contribution to "politicizing" the stereotypes thread. Of course, not being able to find refuge from "politics" - actually, from your neighbors running your life via illegitimate state power - is kind of the reality in post-constitutional America, so the inability to keep threads politics-free is, can we agree, very appropriate and symbolic? Hmm, gottasmall position in a leveraged short against the Euro (exchange-traded fund or ETF). Wonder if she's gonna pop on Monday? It's done OK the last year, for the same reason (Eurozone instability). But I wonder if such a mechanism is going to face some problems delivering its value as/if things get worse for the Euro. Complicated derivatives can collapse, like a company stock going to zero, not because they lack value but because the mechanisms they rely on cease to function on the edges of the curve. The episode is based, I believe, on a Frederick Brown short story. Basically, Kirk and the Gorn have to fight to decide which of their species will win. In the short story, there is no happy ending unlike in the episode.

"BURN THE HERETIC!!!"
There were certain episodes that I liked. Not to mention that WoK in my opinion was very good. There was one episode of TNG I think, an alternate history where the Federation was continuously at war with the Klingons? that was very good. Much of the rest of it? That empath character. Agauman of space? The list of ST annoyances is too large to post here. Posted by: Tim in Illinois at June 28, 2015 01:45 PM (91eZY) 25

Posted by: Tim in Illinois at June 28, 2015 01:38 PM (91eZY) I liked the original Star Trek as a kid. Watching it as an adult, the acting is as wooden and as hell and there is way too much lefty politics. Fuck it who needs it. Posted by: TheQuietMan at June 28, 2015 01:45 PM (DiZBp) 26

Rottenberry had several other tv series, too. Earth: Final Conflict is one. Never watched but I might soon. Andromeda is another; which I liked. Shatner wrote a bunch of scifi books. They even made a tv series based on his books in the early 90's called TekWar. I never bothered watching because it looked dumb. But I'm gonna watch a couple of episodes this week. Kirk should've painted his log-gun black so it would be more cool and tactical.

If we're thinking about the same Fredric Brown story (he said to the dead thread), it does have a happy ending. The human race wins against a murderous xenophobic race with no casualties, because a godlike race intervenes and rules on the basis of a single combat between them.
