It Sure Looks Like Greece Will Exit the Euro

What is surreal is these Political Priests crying over the failure of an ideological technocratic structure that never worked and has made the people under it fairly unhappy.

But zealots care little for three-dimensional human beings and their silly three-dimensional feelings; their only concern is for the Heavens built in the fourth dimensional world, abstracted away from this rotten world of matter and spirit.

This could all just be the latest round of bluffing and brinksmanship, but this could finally be the long-awaited end.

This statement was just issued:

Here's that full statement.

Note that the Gardening Thread is below, and it's a good one. But this seems like Breaking News. I hope Y-Not, Weirddave, and KT will excuse the stompenation.

12 The lenders knew Greece couldn't afford the loans when they gave them.
So what? High interest rate, awesome!
The corrupt Greek govt didn't care as long as they got their bribe and cut.

People want to teach Greece a lesson, but reality is Greece really can't afford to pay the loans.

Consigning generations to poverty under the loans isn't an option -- and anyway they tried that route, it just tripled their unemployment rate.

Just as the spontaneous whoops of delight and jumping for joy by American journalists at news of this week's various SCROTUS decisions must have been due to allergies, or, er, um, well, something something.

For a bunch who cast themseves as "objective, neutral, nonideological, nonpartisan professionals", the journos sure do appear to be pretty goddamned partisan every time the veil slips a bit.

30 I find it imboggible** that the element desiring the most handouts and causing the most problems ends up being the one most needing to change to make the entire thing work but not only finding it culturally impossible to change (probably true), but refusing to even think it necessary.

Lesson--10% cause 90% of your problems. Get rid of them if they won't fess up to their own issues.

Now their dealer, the EU, is cutting off the smack due to non-payment.

So what do addicts do when in with drawl? Yeah it will be ugly, violent, and sadly deadly. I just hope it does not reach the number of deaths Greece suffered due to starvation in WWII or as bat-sh1t violent as when the Communists tried to conquer Greece just after WWII.

40 There have been rumors floating around for a while that Deutsche Bank are sitting on a massive tangled bank of risky derivatives positions.

And by "massive", what is meant is "several multiples of total German GDP", so Frau Merkel is not going to be bailing out her banking sector if things go tango-uniform for the euromarkets in the wake of a Grexit.

Lehman Brothers on steroids and meth. Without enough money available to conduct a TARP style rescue. What could go wrong?

Presumably the board at Deutsche Bank got the inside word a few weeks ago that the Eurocrats really were prepared this time to let the Greeks go, and hence unwound some of the worst exposed positions on their trading book. Still, life could get very interesting on the bourses.

116 "They had cost overruns and delays which caused Greece to cancel their
order for 72 Eurofighter Typhoons because they could not afford both."

They actually nearly got the Typhoons. Since the Eurofighter consortium is basically just an overstuffed EU jobs program, there were lobbyists crawling all over Brussels trying to weasel out yet another dubious loan for Athens to let them buy the jets.

Ultimately what seemed to put the kibosh on that was that someone suggested if there were a Grexit, the Greeks would then immediately sell the Typhoons, free of export control stipulations, to unknown third parties of whom the oversight committee at Eurofighter might not approve.

Also, Lockheed Martin, long after it was clear that this was a total fever dream, were still aggresively touting that they had the Greeks signed on the dotted line to buy eighty F-35 jets, to make the program production numbers look better. Oops. Guess that's not happening either.

Your coreligionists are systematically destroying ancient relics throughout the world, as they have done since your religion was created

Soon, the only way to see the relics of the Levant will be the ones that were saved by being in the British Museum.

So, with all due respect, nothing will be returned until your coreligionists stop throwing gays off buildings, cutting off the clitorises of children, raping nine year olds, and blowing up ancient ruins

In short.

Go

Fuck

Sincerely,

What's left of the civilized world

Today, they have the financial levers of the world's largest organized institution, comprised of 18M people with the full force of thousands of pages of indecipherable law behind them, which is about the size of a big state like, oh, Florida.

Actually, the entire point of the EU and the euro was to attack the US and the dollar. That was it.

The fact that a bunch of royal wannabes got to make playthings of the population was just an added bonus. But attacking US hegemony and the dollar was the real motivation behind the EU and euro.

I might be wrong, but I don't think the size of the economy is relevant; it's the principle of a state withdrawing/getting kicked out of the EU. Specifically whether that can happen, and if it happens, how it takes place, and how that state settles up with the rest of the EU, how it re-establishes its own currency, and at what exchange rate, because precedents will be set no matter what happens.

It'd be kind of like Rhode Island seceding from the Union. Economically trivial, but politically and philosophically momentous.

457 There is a Spanish economist who stated that he didn't much like the Euro, felt it was not his favorite sort of thing since he preferred a specie backed, hard currency.
He did say that the one good thing about the Euro was that it took the printing rights away from individual countries, like Spain, that habitually printed more to make up for budget shortfalls. This has clearly come to an end.

Now, having said that, is anyone aware that the various European national banks have been buying up old coins for the last 10 years or so? Especially Germany and France. I was confused by this and had someone suggest that new bills are fairly easy to print: but coining is harder.

I expect the various countries will go back to their own currency, at whatever discount on the Euro they feel like, and that will be that. Sucks to be Cypress and Slovakia.

I expect there will be a major shakedown no matter what, and any financial organization that holds Euros and Euro backed bonds is going to have to hope that someone is willing to take their paper.
The serious question is how the end of the Euro is going to hit the EU.
What is the interest in keeping a union together if the member states are now playing "trial seperation".

Of course, they might just throw Greece out like a voted out member in Survivor, and blame all the losses and bad economies on that state, as their own personal Snowball, but I wonder how well that will last.

465 Fortunately Democrats don't have these issues, they spend all they want on the children's credit cards, on the good faith and credit of traditional America, which they hate and seek to destroy.

They say this weakens the euro (Grexit), but maybe it's like pulling a bad tooth ... health gets better. And the euro hasn't been "printing" like US, but maybe they start if things don't get better.

Hard to say where all the leverage may be ... markets looking like they could roll over for the last year, this might push them.

This could just be last minute brinksmanship, but some authorities seem to think it is too late, no "ah shucks I was kidding" promise would be credit worthy at this point.

One of my peeves with the MSM is that they always frame exchange rate movements in a simplistic (and usually Cassandra-like) fashion.

Exchange rate down? Oh noes, our currency is weak. We can't have a pussy currency! Think of how much all the chi-chi locations in Europe will cost vacationers!

Exchange rate up? Oh noes, that'll hammer our exports! We need a weaker currency!

Posted by: Ricardo Kill at June 27, 2015 08:32 PM (pCePB)

When the adopted the Euro in Germany (I am told by people who were there) your money in your bank account magically turned from Marks into Euros overnight at the rate of, I think, 2:1. Any money under the mattress had to be turned in, I think at the same rate, with a specific date that it had to be turned in.

After that the coins were bought back at a severe discount.

I suspect something like that will happen in reverse. If some of the Eurozone stays on the Euro, that would be a way of liquidating the debt by the country rejecting the Euro and put the final nail in the Euro based economy:
Country A goes of the Euro for the traditional currency (the Ecu or the Thaller say), they make the citizens trade all the Euros in banks at some ratio, and promise to convert currency at a fixed rate for two weeks, after that they will treat it as a foreign conversion and charge a fee.
At this point, all transactions in the country are done in the local currency, and depending on market regulation, the currency stabilizes - with or without a black market (see Argentina's Blue dollar)
If they do it right, the central bank now has a bunch of Euro currency baled up, ready to ship out by the truckloads their international lenders saying "here, we are square"

If the lender accept it, the lender gets the massive inflation that drives them to their knees (inflation being too many units of currency chasing too little things to buy)
If the debtor doesn't accept it they have to explain why legal tender is no longer accepted to the international investors who may start to worry that they are next.
(one day I will write a well reasoned theory how this situation is what a liquidity trap actually is, not what Keynes thought it was)

The only way the lender can get out of the trap is to foresake the Euro, or find some precedent that allows them to refuse the money but continue to claim the debt.

I mean there are other ways out of severe inflation, but that includes hard, mature decisions that will make everyone howl in pain - like market based lending rates and long term reduction in the cost of government.

551 520 Swiss export industry is paying for the pop

Posted by: Ive been fooled at June 27, 2015 08:45 PM (wkuqO)

That's not the right way to think of it. The Swiss Franc is valued so highly compared to the Euro because the Swiss Franc has stability and trust in it, whereas the Euro is nothing but a piece of monkie feces. No one in their right mind would want to trade Swiss Francs for Euros, which is what the market had long ago determined about it. Exporting comes down to a basic trade of the local currency for the foreign one, and given that the Euro isn't worth wiping you ass with, this only makes sense. The Swiss Franc had value because it could be trusted and started being used by others as a reserve currency, on a small level. That is wealth for Switzerland ... which they were happy to try and piss away.

There is, of course, another side to this - the more important side. That is that Swiss Francs can go out and buy hard assets all over. They can buy land and factories in other places and they can buy gold and oil and bring it back.

When central banks purposely weaken their currencies just to enhance exporter profits, they are basically shifting the wealth of the nation into the exporters' accounts. Now, some like to do this as a function of dumping on the rest of the world - they are willing to pay this enormous expense in order to kill off industries in the rest of the world and then monopolize them. The Swiss are not going to kill off any industries anywhere by weakening their currency and giving the money to exporters, so there would be no point to this. The Swiss tried for a few years but finally gave up - thankfully, for them.

Better than having wasted all that wealth trying to weaken their own currency, the Swiss would have been much better off just giving it to the Swiss and letting them run around the world buying up all sorts of shit.

Posted by: Jay Guevara at June 27, 2015 09:06 PM (oKE6c)

Yeah. Fiat currencies can be blown apart by a three year old sneezing. The saving grace, these days, seems to be that they are all fiat currencies, so it's become more of a competition of relativity than actual value. Very, very unstable. And we all know that the crushing debts of most the world are beyond repayment. Some are fantasizing about inflating them away (which seems to be the prevailing delusion) but they like to skip over the fact that while doing the inflating the current costs rise even faster and the situation only gets worse ... until the fiat currencies actually dies.

There are some very bad days ahead. We've known that they were there since the credit crisis in 2008 when we elected to pay enormous amounts for a little time instead of letting things actually fix themselves. And when the dollar goes the world is going to see something it has NEVER seen - the destruction of the world's trade and reserve currency (both functions) with nothing left to turn to. Not. Pretty.

Be aware that Frog Lube is a good (short-term) preservative and an adequate lube for guns ...

... but not particularly good for lubricating mill ways (they really work better with a film of real 20W non-detergent oil).

Further, Frog Lube reacts with oil. The manufacturer says so. The result is not particularly good for metal protection or lubrication.

Cleaning your mill ways with acetone, then lubing them with 20W oil, then using the mill ... then, when you plan on storing the mill for a long time, removing the oil, and then applying FL as per their specs, makes a lot of sense.

They got elected on spending other people's money, and the solvent nations in the EU refuse to give them other people's money.

So they are going to hold a referendum to avoid blame for what happens next.

If the public votes for austerity ( unlikely ), the EU will allow them to stay.

If the public votes to continue spending, the EU not allow them to print Euros, they will go on the Drachma, which will hyperinflate immediately.

The subprime mortgage zit was about to burst in any case; giving a few players to understand that Soros, with his considerable demonstrated acumen, was worried about it would be like shouting in front an avalanche-prone cliff (to mix my metaphors).

The trade balance does matter, over time, as I see it. Especially if the money goes to enemies like China or Russia. Economic activity is generally good, but there needs to be a balance, and we can't allow China to defeat us economically.

Trade deals need to serve the American people first, not global corporations and a propped up stock market. And who pays for US being the world policeman?

But trade is good for world peace, it's just that we can't be the main buyer and keep going in debt.

Just look up Will Geer on Wikipedia. He was best pals with your friend Harry Hay. Well, more like "gay lovers". Well, commies too.

Kinda.....weird.

721 "Add me to the list of people that want everything to explode with Barry in control. The meetings alone, which will theoretically need his input, would drive him crazy."

I kept muttering for years about how the Republicans on Capitol Hill needed to deliberately mire Obama in boring detail regarding budgets, et al. With plenty of math.

King Putt hates details and has the world's shortest attention span. He is especially averse to math. Because he has no comprehension of it. (Anyone remember him saying that Obamacare would drive down the typical family's health premiums by "2500 percent"?)

Of course, this was back when I still suffered from the mild hallucinatory delusion that the Capitol Hill GOP had the intention of acting as an oppositional party rather than being collaborative rubber stamps for the White House. That condition of mine has since cleared up, thanks.

722 Jay, here's the Wikipedia entry on Geer (described as a "social activist"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Will_Geer

He was married and fathered 3 children so I guess he was a switch hitter.

Hrothy, it's still good. The cities will be shit. It's sad but, well. Can you get out of it? Get away from there as the old "Beverly Hillibillies" song says. Can you buy any piece of relative rural property?

728 The feds will do everything they can to keep the EBT cards going. They'll do the equivalent of raw printing of money (it will all be electronic for the most part) to keep that and probably SS checks going out.

If the EBT cards stopped working, just about all our major cities would be free-fire zones overnight.

They know this and will do anything, including sacrificing all the rest of us to keep that going just one day longer.

Hell the cities depend on any increasingly "real time" system of getting food in, and garbage and shit out. If that pipeline stops, the bellies get empty and the shit piles up fast.

I'm reminded of the prophecy of Babylon falling in a day and all the world's merchants weeping in disbelief. I never could shake the uneasy feeling that we are that Babylon.

Don't think I can at this point. What I have is quasi-rural, but not very defensible nor crop friendly!

A national strike of conservatives would be extremely effective if we - say - blocked I-80 in three places for four days.

Just sayin'. A convoy 1 mile long of cars and trucks parked in slanted rows might cause the Eastern Seaboard - some difficulties. Or San Francisco. Or LA/Hollywood.

734 Around here, if they forecast a chance of snow, all the milk and bread will be cleaned out of the grocery stores in hours (my parents say that started back in the 60s when it snowed heavy -- this is SC -- one day a week for three straight weeks and a lot of people ran out of groceries. There's a collective memory of that, they say).

Just extrapolate that to a "event" here nationwide. The underclass in the cities, which is stupid, poor, and herd-like, will be freaking out under those conditions, and the cities will be burning, nationwide.

You've got to realize they will be gone. Like Lot, don't look back.
