Open Thread: Summer Is Here [Y-not]

My husband, dear man that he is, has one weakness. He loves those dumb "fails" videos. I always know when he's watching them because he sounds like this:

Cringe-worthy.

That said, perhaps you are like him and enjoy those silly videos. If so, here's a link for your amusement.

If not, open thread for chit chat while we wait for the Gardening Thread to "bloom."

14 Since we are still talking about heat, me and all of my siblings are excellent swimmers, because my mother never really learned how, there not being a lot of need in West Texas, and she almost drowned in a cattle tank on the farm trying to learn. So she made sure that we took swimming lessons all of our young lives.

I was also made to take swimming lessons, Grump. Sadly, I failed. Really, they told my mother, forget it, she can't swim. I also did pretty crappy at the tennis lessons after that. They didn't like my 2-handed backhand. Of course, now, it's all the rage.

45 Y-Not, your hubby has only one weakness.

You're a lucky 'Ette.

Also, just got back from the grocery store, where a mother and daughter of color struck up a conversation with me due to the cap I wear that has a bass clef on it. Come to find out, the absent hubby is a jazz bassist here in town, we exchanged cards (Mom had one in the bottom of her purse) and we'll try to connect on FaceButt soon. Daughter is a classical pianist, btw.

We talked like we'd known each other for years. Renewed my faith in humanity, it did. It's really good to see that all these efforts to divide us along racial lines isn't working out like they'd hoped. They were nice folks who'd be great fun at anyone's gathering, and I look forward to seeing them again.

She has a Hartz Ultra Guard flea and Tick collar. I used zip ties to keep the damn thing on. It says it's good for 7 months. I replace it after 5. I take the cat to the vet every year for rabies/etc. shots.

So far so good. The cat would go crazy if we tried to keep her inside all the time. She is the queen of her domain.

Posted by: Peaches at June 27, 2015 06:20 PM (EgOr3)

74 I tried flea collars and they never worked very well. I just don't let mine out. And the presence of fleas outside really hinges on two factors, (1) a lot of lose dogs in the neighborhood and (2) a lot of sand. I have both.

90 Gay Marriage Ruling: Fine by me.

My legal reason: I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure the Full Faith and Credit Clause meant that marriage licenses issued in one state be respected in all others. If I'm correct, then it set up the absurdity of one state "banning" gay marriage while others legalized it. All gay couple A had to do was go to the state next door, marry, then come back. And that would a constitutionally recognized

My personal reason: I'm bi, married to the best woman in the world, but still might have ended up spending my life with a man. And I was raised to be a romantic when it came to marriage, to see it as a good thing and a symbol of personal commitment. So I can see with my own eyes, and through the eyes of family, friends and LGBT acquaintances that being married was important. Add to that the fact that marriage itself has been pretty much secularized in this country (a marriage between atheists performed by a judge is still called a marriage), that the religious objection to is a subjective moral one.

And I'm 100% against anyone forcing someone to act against their religious beliefs. That's the battle I'll be fighting for. I don't share the right's general Christian beliefs but I've always found them in general to be good and decent people maligned by the worst of the SJW online lynch mobbers.

as for Obamacare.......

I couldn't be more enraged. Obamcare itself cost my family several thousand dollars come tax time when the IRS counted the benefits on a plan we never once used for so much as a basic checkup.

The great failure that is Boehner and the house Republicans is compounded by this.

So, I'm in a happy-sad place. I'm a little more depressed at the vitriol generated by the gay marriage thing, but I'm trying to practice what I preach---which is tough, particularly when people go after your wife of all things.
