What Is Still Good In Life? What Is Still Good In America?

My mood is dark, but commenters lifted my spirits by reminding me there are still good things in life, like gambling strippers who let you spin The Wheel of Anal.

What is still good in your lives?

What is still good in this country?

It doesn't have to be big things. Like, I just got a Police greatest hits album. The Police are really good, and I had forgotten that.

So that's good.

That, and the Wheel of Anal.

Which was actually a song on Regatta de Blanc I'm pretty sure (La Roue d'Anal).

Here's Something Nice: via Jane D'Oh:

Outside is wonderful.

You can fly fish there, maybe even with Mike Flynn, and you're surrounded by beauty.

THE TESTAMENT OF A FISHERMANRobert Traver 1964, (Judge John Voelker 1903-93)I fish because I love to;Because I love the environs where trout are found, which are invariably beautiful, and hate the environs where crowds of people are found, which are invariably ugly;Because of all the television commercials, cocktail parties, and assorted social posturing I thus escape;Because, in a world where most men seem to spend their lives doing things they hate, my fishing is at once an endless source of delight and an act of small rebellion;Because trout do not lie or cheat and cannot be bought or bribed or impressed by power, but respond only to quietude and humility and endless patience;Because I suspect that men are going along this way for the last time, and I for one don't want to waste the trip; because mercifully there are no telephones on trout waters;Because only in the woods can I find solitude without loneliness;Because bourbon out of an old tin cup always tastes better out there;Because maybe one day I will catch a mermaid; And, finally, not because I regard fishing as being so terribly important but because I suspect that so many of the other concerns of men are equally unimportant - and not nearly so much fun.Anal is also very good.

115 Home. Family. The outstanding, awe-inspiring raw natural beauty. Neighbors. Church. You can still rock in America. We still have stores packed with 87 times as much variety as even other first world countries. You can pick up the internet just about coast to coast. The internet is still pretty much an open wild west. Hot babes wearing skimpy summer outfits. Baseball season. The assurance that when we run the race, a crown awaits us in glory. The love of Jesus Christ. Hope in His glory.

Grr...gonna reformat so it's legible:

Outside is wonderful.

You can fly fish there, maybe even with Mike Flynn, and you're surrounded by beauty.

THE TESTAMENT OF A FISHERMANRobert Traver 1964, (Judge John Voelker 1903-93

)I fish because I love to;Because I love the environs where trout are found, which are invariably beautiful, and hate the environs where crowds of people are found, which are invariably ugly;

Because of all the television commercials, cocktail parties, and assorted social posturing I thus escape;Because, in a world where most men seem to spend their lives doing things they hate, my fishing is at once an endless source of delight and an act of small rebellion;

Because trout do not lie or cheat and cannot be bought or bribed or impressed by power, but respond only to quietude and humility and endless patience;

Because I suspect that men are going along this way for the last time, and I for one don't want to waste the trip; because mercifully there are no telephones on trout waters;

Because only in the woods can I find solitude without loneliness;

Because bourbon out of an old tin cup always tastes better out there;

Because maybe one day I will catch a mermaid;

And, finally, not because I regard fishing as being so terribly important but because I suspect that so many of the other concerns of men are equally unimportant - and not nearly so much fun.

I am also blessed to have someone in my life who gets me.

But what it is ain't exactly clear
There's a man with a gun over there
Telling me I got to beware

I think it's time we stop
Children, what's that sound?

There's battle lines being drawn
Nobody's right if everybody's wrong
Young people speaking' their minds
Getting so much resistance from behind

It's time we stop
Hey, what's that sound?
Everybody look - what's going down?

What a field day for the heat
A thousand people in the street
Singing songs and carrying signs
Mostly saying, "hooray for our side"

It's time we stop
Hey, what's that sound?
Everybody look - what's going down?

Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
It starts when you're always afraid
Step out of line, the men come and take you away

We better stop
Hey, what's that sound?
Everybody look - what's going down?

We better stop
Children, what's that sound?
Everybody look - what's going down?

220 I guess I'm too late to mention bourbon. (But I just got a bottle of Angel's Envy and it's the-bomb-dot-com).

Other good things, let's see:

The North Carolina shore, in July, near dusk, with thunder clouds rolling in. Lightning over the ocean at night.

Pavel Datsyuk. No, he's not from here, but he performs his miracles and wonders here.

The Ruger Model One falling-block rifle, safari grade, in 7mm Rem Mag.

Family, yada yada yada.

Silver Linings Playbook. Yeah, I know, it's a chick flick about dancing and shit, but that was a great movie. I've been looking for silver linings since I saw it.

The ability to commiserate with the like-minded during dark weeks like this one.

I was thinking about our earlier discussion of the Confederate Flag; and that bittersweet nostalgia of the great Lost Cause that draws people to that flag. And I was thinking: We don't really need to go back that far, now, for that feeling. I don't know; is that a silver lining?

Let's see. Legitimate good thing. This is pretty amazing. Click thru for the pics:

Kameya Kiyonaga is a Japanese confectioner that has a very rich history dating back to around 1617. This summer, for a limited time, the sweets shop is selling a very unique confectionary that is so breathtaking, youll probably feel bad when you take a bite out of it.

Not only does the packaging remind us of a cloudless night, but the sweet itself is a beautiful representation of the starry sky. This visually stunning dessert combines jelly and yokan (red bean paste, agar and sugar), but it also has hints of both passionfruit and lemon. The store recommends chilling the dessert in order to bring out even more of the flavors. We dont think there could be anything more perfect than eating it while gazing at the summer constellations.

What is good in America? Well, I still think Americans are basically friendly throughout most of this country. I think they make an effort to make you feel welcome, to be helpful, and to be kind.

We traveled last week to Kentucky, by way of Nashville, so I did a lot of people watching in the airports and interacted with people in a part of the country where I'd never been without anyone being an a-hole to me. In fact, some were nicer than they "had to" be. BTW, there were no signs of the big Race Problems that Progressives tell us exist. Black or white, people tend to treat me well (and I them).

Really, what I have is a mass market law tractor in John Deere colors.

My cousin had a B model that you started by spinning the flywheel. He had Internationals after that I think. My uncle had International I think. as did my other cousin Daryl and Daryl. Oh, they had a New Holland baler that had it's own gas engine to power it. You could hear that engine bellow clear across the field every time it swallow a big chunk of alfalfa, and crash and clank and spit out another hay bale.

Fox dictates the national broadcasts, to the point of nearly everything they say is scripted. I've been systematically buying up all the dvd sets of World Series that are being released, and it's amazing to observe the difference between Fox and when they were on NBC.

Fox broadcasts are so graphics-driven, there must be someone in the ears of the announcers telling them to mention this stat, or that little detail of a player's life, because they will show the graphics immediately afterwards, as if it was somehow spontaneous. And not the things anybody watching really wants to know. Just stupid stuff. Created by somebody in the graphics department.

405 Good things in my life:

Currently have the best group of friends, maybe the best I will ever have in my life, all in one place. I have been in relationships where you care more than the other person, it is exhausting. All love me for who I am, but inspire me to push me to be improve and be my best self.

Have an adorable kitteh that greets me at the door everyday and comes when I call.

Head full of new personal projects and ideas and I am excited to get them completed.

Family that loves me. Possibly the most important thing.

One other most important thing: God. Was in a serious depression a few years ago; with help and much struggle have descended above the clouds and am walking in sunshine again. Even current events won't be able to push me back to the bad place I was in. Life is good; don't let the idiots get you down.

411 There's plenty within America's borders that are great - plenty of memories, plenty of dishes, and lots of specific good people who are neighbors of many of us.

But.

That's it. Memories, things, and neighbors - all within America's boundaries.

Those "good things' that are of America? Like Liberty, freedom from Tyranny, independence?

They are dead. There is nothing but echoes of those dead things screaming as they are put to death by the Left.

No. Like the memories of democracy some in Munich had in 1938, or the concepts of Egalitarianism some poor sod had as he knelt before the guillotine in the Time of Terror - those things that were good about America are fading memories of dead things; of murdered principles and perverted innocence.

What is left good about America?

The memories of what it was.

The best baseball announcing is with crappy teams. If the team is doing well, they're entertaining enough to keep your interest. If the team stinks it up constantly on the field, the broadcast team has to be entertaining to keep you around. So they work extra hard. The best baseball to listen to is horrible, losing teams.

Wish it was an option. Just moved and hubby has back surgery in July. We're grounded for a while.

The fun part of moving (OK, that's a stretch) is finding all sorts of things - old quilting projects, old photos, and as my hubby refers to it, items from my virtual scrapbook, such as concet ticket stubs, little notes and drawings from my son, etc.

506 If Morons are looking for escapism, I thought Inside Out was charming and very clever. Perfect to take kids or parents to. I'm sure Pixar is leftist but they had a surprisingly conservative message in it. I cried a few times; how is it I am getting more cynical AND more weepy as the years go by?

SPOILERS

I loved that the main emotion, Joy, starts being very self centered and assuming she should be the predominant emotion in Riley's life all the time. Sounds like special snowflakes, who only want the good emotions, never the bad. But as the film progresses Joy grows, and learns that the other emotions play a vital role, and that joy tempered with sadness is vital to leading a full life and handling the challenges life throws your way. A surprisingly conservative message.

Sometime in the mid-90s, when Joe Buck was just starting out in the business (yeah, I know), he would share the mic with his dad. One day Joe had the hiccups, on the air. Did his best to control/hide it, but they were there. Jack was silent... At one point Joe just sort of apologized to the listeners, then turned to his dad and said "you're not helping at all!" Jack busted out laughing, acted all innocent, and just let it happen.

Used to love Ralph Kiner doing the color for the Mets.

Not unrelated, a friend of mine used to work as a cameraman for WPIX-TV in NYC back in the 80's and did all the Yankee games. One day, the batter fouls a ball onto the plate which came back and hit Steve Balboni right in the nuts. He doubled over in pain and the game was halted for a few minutes. Tom Seaver, who was doing the commentary, tried to be genteel and said" Wow, he fouled that one right into his thigh. That's gotta hurt." Not missing a beat, Scooter Phil Rizzuto piped in, "Thigh, my eye! He rung his chimes! I could hear it all the way up here!" My friend laughed so hard that the camera was shaking and they had to cut away.

Emmes truth.

Of course it is still possible that the emotionally unstable among us will react poorly, lashing out for the sake of the exercise, and end up perpetuating the cultural shift by handing long term control to the left out of their misguided obsession with ideological purity on the right. But I try not to think of that.

585 Used to love Ralph Kiner doing the color for the Mets.

Not unrelated, a friend of mine used to work as a cameraman for
WPIX-TV in NYC back in the 80's and did all the Yankee games. One day,
the batter fouls a ball onto the plate which came back and hit Steve
Balboni right in the nuts. He doubled over in pain and the game was
halted for a few minutes. Tom Seaver, who was doing the commentary,
tried to be genteel and said" Wow, he fouled that one right into his
thigh. That's gotta hurt." Not missing a beat, Scooter Phil Rizzuto
piped in, "Thigh, my eye! He rung his chimes! I could hear it all the
way up here!" My friend laughed so hard that the camera was shaking and
they had to cut away.

Emmes truth.

Posted by: J.J. Sefton at June 26, 2015 05:14 PM (St6BJ)

They say Rizzuto was a treat to hear, and I believe it. I saw a film on the Yankees not long ago, and there was a segment on the guy who did the ballpark PA announcements. I can't remember his name. Anyway, you know who I mean. At the time they interviewed him, I think he was... what, 99? That voice. And that face! He looked like he belonged in a museum, and oh, the things he would have witnessed over the years...

605 There's another idea for a Sunday--what's the difference between a betty and a dowdy and a cobbler?

Posted by: HR braucht ein Bier at June 26, 2015 05:10 PM (ZKzrr)

Betty is like bread pudding but with fruit, brown sugar and butter mixed in with the bread instead of batter. Dowdy is like pie but with only a top crust which is usually made to look rustic with the pie dough cut in pieces of strips and laid haphazardly on to of the fruit filling.

Cobbler can be made several ways. My grandma made batter out of milk, self rising flour, melted butter, sugar, an egg and cinnamon, vanilla and nutmeg to taste which she poured in a pan and covered with fruit (so the batter rose through the fruit as it cooked. My best friend grandma had a similar recipe but she poured the batter on top of the fruit. Some people make cobbler with a streusel topping, too (although those people are heathens and hardly worth mentioning).

I just spent 2 days with my aging parents, helping them with things they used to help me with. I cleaned their basement, took stuff that was too heavy for them to lift to the computer recycling center, and I took them to trade in their old junkers on one newcar. Dad can't drive any more and is too frail to make any deals, so I negotiated the deal and got them a good car at a good price. That was cool. It was even cooler to hear them say thank you, and know they meant it.
And a good horse. A good horse will make up for a lot of the problems in the world.

676 The things that keep us happy are the same things that millions of people in other totalitarian regimes use to be 'happy'----plentiful alcohol, ready available drugs of other types, circuses(aka sports), and all the sex the internet will allow.
And a short, cruel death if we step out of line--as a sort of bottom line motivator to not trouble our delicate heads with hopes or desires beyond the gruel our rulers dish to us.

Thank you, she is my favorite despite my knowing you aren't supposed to feel that way.

When I was a toddler she used to damn near drown herself trying to "save me" from drowning in the lake we lived on....

I swam like a champ but she was convinced I was in trouble and the fact she was terrified of water...

the story goes dad finally snapped and explained to her... "he can swim better than YOU dear..."and he slung me into the water and I laughed...

When I close my eyes and imagine angels they bear her face...

she has never made me feel anything other than safe and loved in a time of my life when both were a dicey proposition.

Life is most decidedly and expressly unfair...

I am mortified of losing my mental acuity but I would gladly risk a dip in THAT lake were it to bring her back from that lake.....

Thanks again.

What is still good in your lives?

My 3 y/o and my 5 m/o.

What is still good in this country?

The people of the US. It's easy to get hung up on all the negative news, the shit coming out of DC, etc. But there is a reason that congress has epically low approval. They are not like us. They are not like the good people of the US, ready to give the shirt off our backs at the drop of a hat. The same people that, despite all the lies and spin from the media about hating brown or black people, would help them out just the same as a person of the same color.

In a year, the era of Obama will be gone, and we can get back to rebuilding this, still, great country of ours

Funny thing. Today was culture day for my 3 year old at daycare, where they were to bring something of cultural relevance to show and tell. Fuck that I thought, I sent him with an American flag (Disney Mickey) beach towel and a Captain America hotwheels. The teacher noted that, it was peculiar, because many parents did similar (American flag), and his class is epically diverse; white, black, indian (dot), asian, mexican, mixed, etc.

Fuck Obama and the left and their racial politics. It is not penetrating.

690 I just got a new stallion. Hes the best of his breed in North America, and i am going to breed him this year to my favourite mares. I am so damn excited that i am gonna have baby horses next year i dont even care that when i sell animals i gotta figure an automatic 50% goes to the FSA. i am gona have baby horses, man! that freaking rocks. I may be getting a new mare within 30 days. Thats pretty exciting, too. Why yes, when life sucks i DO retreat into my breeding program, and I am not ashamed of it. its more socially acceptable than drinking ad i can talk about it in public, unlike going to church, and christian outreach activities.

Also it seems I still got one barn cat and shes a sweetheart. No thanks to the psycho neighbor a block away. Shes smart and sticks close to home, and my asshole neighbor next door told me he kinda likes her, so shes safe there too. Couldn't believe it when he said it. But the mean old bastard was freaking pissed that the others were gone, and hes doing his best to make a safe space for the last one. That was a GINORMOUS surprise.

Friend of mine beat cancer. hes a tough cowboy and they had to go through his scrotum to get the last tumor. He had to give up a testicle and go through some hell this winter, but hes back to breaking horses and hes gonna do the restart on Uncle horse for me, because i am giving him a place for his mares to crash for the summer. Long live the no-money economy! He threw me up on my black horse yesterday, and for the first time in over a year and a half, i rode a horse without pain in my lower back. While I was weak as water, there was not a twinge while i did it, and no pain afterwards either. Woke up today and i am still good. No words to express my gratitude. so i rode around with my pal, whos just out of the hospital, and thanked God that he and I are good to ride again. I had been starting to feel like a bird with clipped wings.

There is plenty to be happy about on this farm.

762 My recommendation, unless it is a huge story on the lines of a disaster,
I have stopped watching TV news including FOX. The 24/7 drum beats of
doom and shouting is not good for your mental health.

--

Very wise advise. I haven't had the TV on at all the last 48 hours, but I've been getting away more and more from even watching anything on Fox. I'm so sick and tired of the doom and gloom, the non-stop bad news, the bickering of the eggheads that go on there to "debate." It really, really affects my mood. Plus, even Fox has an agenda and I'm not going to be a party any longer. I've only visited a very few sites the last couple days. Generally Ace and Insty. I can't even handle Drudge or WZ anymore. It's all so grim.

But I'm thankful always for my family. Despite what's happened to this once great country, I'm forever thankful I'm an American. I'd rather be American than any other nationality. That must mean I've got a shred of hope left.

Knowing this is not the (political) end. Exit polls for 2014: R's won 43% of voters aged 18-29; that's a pretty good starting point considering we are at "peak liberalism" culturally and in terms of bureaucratic/government control. I mean virtually every one of those 43% apart from a few million who were home schooled or privately schooled just recently spent 12 years being outright indoctrinated in the public school system so we could be doing a lot worse. We also won 54% of white people of that age and the same number of white women.

Ouch! And BE CAREFUL. We had a wonderful elderly neighbor who painted (we have one framed in our living room) who had to go into an old-folks' home in Klamath Falls after falling in her garage. It meant the end of one life here among her friends and pastimes, and the opening of an entirely different chapter amongst strangers near her daughter.

Oh My Gaia! That's it! That's the way around that damn 22nd Amendment! Introducing...Mohammad Abdul Obama! Barak's twin brother! His records were...stored with Al Sharpton's financial records and burned in that same strange fire just before Al's audit! And Mohammad went to...not Harvard...Yale! Yeah, that's it, he went to Yale. Then he taught Constitutional law at...the University of Detroit. And he has a wife...Scamelle Obama. And they have two daughters....I forget their names but who cares. Okay, we will need a couple ghost-written auto-biographies...make them retro-active best sellers. And we will have to invent a few influential mentors, this time with no skeletons in the closet. We'll need a motto, something new and brilliant...Wish and Renovate! Yeah, that will work! It sounds good but really doesn't say jack shit! Okay, lets get on this people, we are BACK!

I'm going to get ahead on this one. If the sex if the individuals involved is irrelevant, than why is the number "two" so sacred? If you accept that one's sex is irrelevant, than there is nothing other than irrational animus to bar marriages involving more than two people.

In for a penny, in for a pound.

Fight duo-normative oppression.

854 Want to know what's still good in America ace? Well I would say look no further then your own words. You have said yourself that America isn't a place, a culture, a history or a group of people. It's an idea. Well there you go. That idea is still as good and beautiful as ever. They can take over the government change the culture change the laws and claim it all for themselves but they can never have "America" cause it's out of their reach. America is still as great and beautiful as ever and all we got to do is believe in it.

And just in time for the Internet.

871 What is good in life, and in America?

That people are more aware than ever that the First and Second Amendments go hand in hand, and eternal vigilance is required.

That my mother is able to enjoy a full rich life of independence and relative security (because nothing is sure in this life).

I'm grateful for my job, and my wonderful boss and coworkers.

875 To me what is good, and I've often thought of this, is at least my husband and I can sit in our house and have some privacy. I mean, the govt can't just come in any time they feel like it.

Oh, I know they can break down your door and kill your dog with no advanced warning if they think they have some druggie reason or something.

I'm not talking about that. I mean, I've often appreciated the fact that (with that brutal exception) they don't just have carte blanche to come in any time they want, go through all your stuff, or sit there able to tell you what to do, eat, say, etc. Yet.

And I'm serious. I really do appreciate this as long as we have it.

(I also appreciate the Internet, and have always thought it is a wonderful place of freedom, for now, so we should appreciate it while we've got it.)

887 So many good things in life! I could write pages about food, alone. That's why I'm dieting now, i like food too much man. Speaking of which, for super low fat salad dressing, get that Ranch Dressing mix at Costco or Sam's Club, and mix it with cottage cheese with a hand blender. Tastes just as good, and a fraction of the calories. It's the only way I've been able to stand to eat all this salad.

Here's some good stuff:
Tech stuff gives my soul peace:
Qt, gcc, bash, nodejs, angularjs, python, etc. etc.
digitalocean, cloud.google.com
namesilo, namecheap, and so forth
Audacity, blender, Unity, Krita, Sketchup, et. al.
open source software in general w00tw00t

books. i have more books in this house than I could read in the time i have left. good books too, history, technical stuff, some sci-fi, how-to, so many. BOOKS!!!! yay books

the earth is wonderful. let me find that quote... ah: "The moment one gives close attention to any thing, even a blade of grass it becomes a mysterious, awesome, indescribably magnificent world in itself." -- Henry Miller.

This universe is incredible, when I stop and pay attention to it. The more you look at it, the more detailed and magnificent it becomes. You can approach it scientifically, and learn physics and chemistry and mathematics and engineering, or artistically, and devote yourself to making impressionistic clay sculptures of protozoa, there is endless depth to this reality, not the least of which is the depth of the ways we are able to appreciate it. Being allowed to experience the sublime physical world was worth the cost and pain of incarnation.

the best one for me though is the love of a good woman who sees past my flaws, and still laughs at my stupid sense of humor after 25 years of marriage. i don't know what went wrong in her judgment to stick around, but i will capitalize on that to my last breath. life is better when you have someone to share it with.

Chin up Ace! This life was always a temporary ride, gather ye rosebuds while ye may and all that.
