My Pastor is the first white member of a ministerium of area pastors. (My church is close to one of the poorer, heavily black and Hispanic neighbourhoods in the area.)
At the installation of the new officers of the ministerium, you had black pastors saying "ALL lives matter." Not once did they say "Black lives matter." And aside from the NAACP guy who gave a short speech towards the end (it was a joint installation of the ministerium and NAACP boards), all the men and women of God who spoke blamed the communities problems on, get this, sin and bad behaviour and proclaimed Christ as the one who could change the society.
These black racists didn't ever blame the man or outside forces once but made it clear that we all face the consequences of our actions.
They warmed the cockles of my black racist heart. (Is that racist?)
Hillary Clinton may have been the stopped clock that happens to be right this time, but sdoes she ever even mean anything she says? This was probably a slip up on her part.

After the South Carolina House voted 103-10 earlier today to debate removing the Confederate flag from the Capitol grounds, the Senate followed this afternoon by approving the amendment to debate with a voice vote.
The measure enabling debate required two-thirds approval; now the General Assembly will take up the question later this summer of whether to take down the flag.
The Post and Courier newspaper in Charleston has contacted every single legislator in the state and has a running tally of their current votes.
The House count is currently 63 Yes (take the flag down), 8 No, 9 Undecided. That leaves 43 who either refused to answer or have not responded.
The Senate count is 28 Yes, 2 No, 3 Undecided. 12 either refused to answer or have not respond.
The politics on this have moved faster than most would have predicted...

The moment it was reported that there were outside contractors involved
in the OPM scandal, no matter what their role, I just knew Obama would
immediately blame the contractors for all the troubles. Just like they
did with the healthcare.gov fiasco. "It's all the contractors' fault!"
Even if it were true, they never bother to inform us of who in the
government hired the contractors and who was responsible for keeping
tabs on them.
God these people are awful.

I've posted before my guess as to what really happened: (1) The people responsible for IT security at OPM don't actually do anything themselves, they just have meetings with each other and administer contracts, and many of them are affirmative action hires who have never worked for any employer except the Federal government; (2) the prime contractor for IT security at OPM is a Minority Disadvantaged Business Enterprise that actually doesn't do anything, but the employees have meetings with each other and with their government counterparts, and the work is subbed out to subcontractors; (3) most of the subcontractors are federal body shops that hire minimally qualified personnel at the standard rate and put their markup on it; (4) said minimally qualified personnel have little to no IT security experience beyond disabling internet firewalls, their last jobs were as Obamacare Navigators, and they volunteered for the campaign before that; but (5) there is an Asian guy, Wang, over in the corner cubicle who does most of the work and he is a Chinese spy. Now it turns out that apparently Wang was actually physically located in China. What a country.

That was my understanding too. The Argentine "company," as I heard it, was one man, and the Chinese "company" was another guy, and both of them had root access to the entire data file.

I recall after the Obamacare site disaster it came out that the federal employees responsible - the ones working w/the contractors - kept changing, and also held back, the system requirements. Like, months before the whole thing was supposed to go live. You don't have to be a software developer to know that you can't build an application if your customer keeps changing its mind.
I would bet serious money that this OPM fiasco was along the same lines - likely middle managers dicking around over details of what they want, changing their minds, etc. and making it near impossible to get things done.

Nah. Edelman did some good stuff (Gettysburg, which, I must add, included Confederate flags, so we must now denounce it) but Horner understood better than most that the point of music in films is to generate emotion, not just make noise. Titanic, the whole Battle of the Mutara Nebula sequence in Star Trek II (the whole score, really) the last sunrise on Genesis in Star Trek III, the suiting up and launch sequence in Apollo 13, so many parts of Aliens... See how he uses the music so effectively to generate emotion. Williams and Goldsmith were deeper composers, but Horner earned his place up near the top.

These things remind people that there once was a large segment of the country that said "no" to what they considered an overly authoritarian state, and those things must be removed so that those people no longer remember that rebellion is an option. It's fundamentally no different from ISIS destroying ancient artifacts; there can only be loyalty to allah, so everything remotely conceivable as not loyal to allah must go. Likewise for the leftist, there can only be loyalty to The Authoritarian State, and anything remotely disloyal to The Authoritarian State must go.

Certainly happened to the swastika. Started out good, ended up bad.
The Klan attempted to pervert the cross but the cross was able to resist the negative association.
The Confederate Battle Flag started out bad but was evolving to good. It was evolving away from being a symbol of slavery and treason to instead become a symbol of courage, fortitude in the face of long odds, and resistance to a remote, tyrannical government.
That libs real problem with the CFB was that it was evolving from bad to good in ways they found threatening to their agenda. So it had to be squashed ASAP.

I tried to get on the ONT last night for the first time in forever. And the blog, she was broke. Or something. So I crawled in bed and watched an Australian PBS show whose title I forget, but I loved it. Something something about a Jewish nurse after WWII living and working in Australia and dealing with issues. Fell asleep during it, which was a plus.

The majority of my friends/family are in the Philly burbs area (Montco, Upper Bucks, etc). Mom and dad live in Sussex Co, DE.
I'll be flying into Philly tomorrow, then connecting to Salisbury, MD. Mom and dad will pick me up there. I'll be in DE and Philly area until the 11th of July. I've been saving vacation days for two years for this. Disconnecting can be a good thing, though I will miss my husband desperately.

Pretty much every society has some kind of rules of war, at least when fighting against their own kind. Warfare tends to be much more savage between dissimilar cultures - during the middle ages English warfare against the Scots and Irish was much more savage than it was against the French, for example, and during the 18th century warfare between white and Indians was much fiercer than it was when fighting between two groups of whites.
These rules change over generations - the 17th century was incredibly savage, and the reaction to that led to much more restrictive rules during the 18th century and into the 19th. The 20th century was as savage as could be, and I think that because we tend to take that as the standard, it distorts our ability to assess historical figures (like Sherman, but also some of the stuff during the American Revolution) as well as how best to assess current conflicts.

No big legal arguments needed. They were certainly allowed to secede. They joined a union and then they decided to leave, which they did.
Of course, that means that Lincoln attacked (and took) a foreign country) which is also perfectly Constitutional (aside from the un-Constitutional acts he committed to American citizens in order to take over that foreign nation that the Southern states had become).
Obviously it was all legal and fine since the Southern states were forced to put anti-secession clauses into their state constitutions when they re-entered the union, making it clear that there is no legal restriction on state secession from the federal government level.

Germany has any number of different regions, tribes and historical issues and that goes for every other country. Hell, Spain practically is 2 countries.

It is still not a direct comparison, but closer than 1860.
Strong states, virtually no central gov.
I do not believe they will end up going the same way.

Yes, but what a couple of us have been pointing out is that wasn't necessarily Sherman's actual motivation - he apparently had a tendency to advocate extreme measures even when horrendously inappropriate to the situation.

Jane, I don't know if you read what took place above, but I don't see how you could think we think Southerners are a joke if you did.
That remark was aimed at a rather specific segment of people who are bitter and angry over the Civil War. A war a hundred plus years ago.
Southerners are every bit American as anyone else and no better or worse than anyone else.

We yankees think about the civil war the same way we think about the spanish american war. As in, not very often.
When I moved to rural VA, the most shocking part to me was that people still talked about "yankees" "carpet baggers" and "the war of northern aggression".
It's really not something we think about / talk about / relive.
I have a ton of sympathy for what southerners went through with shermans march and reconstruction and all that. I'm not a big fan of Lincoln, I don't think we should have invaded the south to "preserve the union".
All states should have the right to leave this voluntary agreement that is our federal government.
All that being said, southerners need to chill out about the civil war. It's over. It is what it is.

My bond to the Steelers went back over 12 years already, then, to the 1-13, 5-9, and 6-8 seasons before Noll's new team came together. But hell, that's just a sports franchise. If it had been something serious like the future of the country, I'd probably have run off like a spoiled brat, just like you.
Incidentally, when the Steelers hired Noll, he wasn't even their first choice. The Rooneys really wanted Joe Paterno, but he refused to leave Penn State. He was a loyal guy, too - but as we know, it doesn't always work both ways, does it?
