The problem is that Greece is way over extended and has no real way of paying off anywhere near what they owe. Germany should never have made the last several loans, and in a rational world Greece would have been kicked out of the Euro monetary agreement years ago. Then they could devalue their drachma to the point where they can make their lavish pension payments, and still pay off creditors if they need to.
But really... Germany knew they were never going to get repaid.

It would also depend on how the debt was structured -- if they were allowed to restructure in drachmas, easy. If they had to pay off in Euros, well... Eh.

Yes, a lot of big banks loaned them money. But the big banks get guarantees from governments for those loans. That is the way the things work. So if they default to the bank who loaned the money the bank comes to whoever guaranteed the loan. The country acts as a co-signer on the loan and we are stuck with a lot of that shit.

What does the opening of the Declaration of Independence actually say? What we're talking about here, right now in this thread is a /human political /event. We disagree with BOTH current american parties about their idea of what are good /laws and the /nature of the world and what we are entitled to as human beings. (it seems to me specifically freedom and personal prosperity.). But we need to start by discussing our /cause.

Because they don't have a reliable port for their Navy that doesn't freeze in the winter.
Except, well, Ukraine and the Kaliningrad Oblast, which is surrounded by, well, less than allies to the Kremlin and is still cold as balls..
But the problem with being in the Black Sea is that you're stuck in the Black Sea if NATO ally Turkey ever grows balls and shuts down the strait to Russian military ships. Don't know if that would realistically happen or not, but that's Russias fear.

appreciate it. yeah, the Greece thing makes sense to me from the Russian perspective. If they can pull off getting a naval base there.
They've been doing some upgrades to the Black Sea Fleet recently while mostly focusing on the North Sea Fleet. If that changes (more new ships to Black Sea Fleet), then that's a pretty good sign Putins thinking what I think he's thinking right now.

Leverage. Banks typically require collateral for loans. Greek government debt was some of that collateral. Whoever holds the debt based on Greek government debt can turn around and use *that* as collateral. And so on.
If the value of the Greek debt goes to 0, so does everything built on it. On awful lot of which is paper wealth in Germany.
Once the cross EU loans start popping, there's not much reason to preserve the the union beyond the bureaucrats' desire to own the continent without fighting another world war over it.

Germans loaned Greeks money they knew the Greeks couldn't pay back so the Greeks could keep buying German goods. Works great until the bill comes due which it now is.
Don't feel sorry for the Germans. They are going to get what they deserve in the default. Well, almost since they already bailed out their banks and left most of the toxic debt on the ECB's balance sheet.
And so why would Putin want a warm water port? Oh I don't know perhaps it has something to do with the fact that Obama and the neocons tried to steal the one he had in Crimea. Yes folks, the USof A is directly responsible for the overthrow of a democratically elected regime in Ukraine which didn't follow our orders to the letter. So now, faced with being encircled by obviously hostile forces in Ukraine, the Baltics and Poland, Russia is trying to strategically maneuver. The warmongers call it empire building . . . funny it isn't called that when they do it. And what would Putin want . . . maybe a way to pipe gas from Caspian Sea to Europe without having to pay a toll to the US-backed crooks who run Ukraine now.

I'm pretty wasted cuz over the past month I've given up on the last bits of being hopeful about the future for our country.

If we truly are broken as a country we need to figure out what is wrong, and examine the whole concept of America, land of the free. etc. I think it was a good idea, but man we don't have it now.
What I'm saying here is the american dream is dead. It isn't alive with us, inside of Conservatism or with the Tea Party, with Ted Cruz, or with Walker, Rand or Rubio or with god forbid, Sanders or Warren. It's dead, no one has it.
Why and where did we make mistakes?
Figure that out and then decide what action will be the most successful and positive.

The House is set to vote Thursday on Trade Promotion Authority, with GOP leaders employing procedural maneuvers and indirect promises to make sure the bill eventually gets signed into law.
Pro-trade lawmakers are moving ahead with a vote on TPA without Trade Adjustment Assistance, which aids U.S. workers displaced by international trade.
The success of their plan hinges on whether Democrats who voted for TPA will still support that measure without immediate certainty they'll also get TAA, which trade opponents voted down on June 12 to derail the entire package.
