So Romance + Dinosaurs Fighting = Box Office Gold?

Despite lukewarm reviews and accusations of sexism Jurassic World had the highest-grossing global opening of all time with $511.8 million this weekend.

This may be the magic bullet for rom-coms: write out your Girl Meets Boy story, and toss in a dinosaur fight every single time the guys in the audience start fidgeting.  I'm not talking out of my rear on this one, by the way. I pitched my idea to my wife on the way home from the park, and she nodded vigorously at the idea.  Added a good wrinkle, too: dinosaurs that bond with individual humans, forcing the Girl and Boy to work together to. we dunno. Capture the old Alpha dinosaur, or something.

The point is: romance + dinosaur fights = gold. Gold, Jerry!

I'm surprised that Hollywood hasn't picked up on the rom-com-dino-action/rom-dino-action genre before this. Just imagine Romancing the Stone only with large mutant crocodiles or The African Queen with a cryptosaur subplot. And for an example of what you can achieve in this genre with a small budget checkout Monsters (2010) which is a mix of Before Sunrise and Cloverfield.

Jurassic World

Fred Schwarz: Is It Just Me or Does Hillary Talk Like a Robot?

She truly is a terrible, awful candidate.

Seriously, she does. Not only does she pronounce the word "a" slowly and distinctly, like it's the answer to a multiple-choice question, without linking it to the words before or after, and not only does she sometimes put little pauses between each word ("it's . . . America's . . . basic . . . bargain") or in inappropriate spots ("it's the same old . . . song"), but she often puts odd stresses on words, seemingly at random: "too many of our kids never learn as they should"; "we see far more opportunities than threats"; "fight back against those who would drive us apart." Toward the end of her speech she began to seem a bit more natural, but for most of it, she sounded like a machine that had been programmed to synthesize speech and was still learning the fine points.

And her campaign re-launch was about as organized and thrilling as you'd expect from Grandma Hil:

If you've ever been to a high-school pep rally, it was almost certainly better organized than this event. First a blind college student gave a so-so rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner," and then a "DREAMer" who recently graduated from the University of Texas came out and told her presumably inspiring life story - in Spanish. They were followed by a drum line from Brooklyn, which lent an incongruous note of excitement to the soporific proceedings. Then a decidedly mediocre rock band came out (after 15 minutes of setting up by their roadie) and did three forgettable songs whose lyrics no one could understand. The bass and guitar guys wore suits with the trouser cuffs rolled up so you could see their ankles. The band was followed by 40 minutes of silence, occasionally punctuated by random people wearing ID badges who walked onto the stage, looked around, and left. Then Bill Clinton showed up in the audience, and everyone got more excited for him than they would for Hillary. Finally, just before noon, Herself arrived. Before the event began, nobody who was standing on line had any idea when Hillary was scheduled to speak; evidently, neither did the organizers.

...Hillary's speech contained more boilerplate than a steamboat factory, but the gist of it was: "I'm down with the working class and I have lots of innovative new ideas." Yeah, that'll work. (She quoted lyrics from a Beatles song to explain that the GOP is stuck in the past.)

...Hillary also said: "No nation is better equipped than ours to meet the threat of cyber-attacks." She actually said that (and was cheered for it). Evidently she's been too busy to read the paper the last couple of days.

Mistress of Disaster, Jamie Gorelick, Now Defense Counsel for the Clinton Foundation Against Freedom Watch's Racketeering Lawsuit

The Clinton Foundation has also pulled in a legal big-gun, former Deputy Attorney General Jamie Gorelick, to lead its defense against the racketeering suit filed in March by Larry Klayman of Freedom Watch.

In her first filing in the case last week, Gorelick - a partner at D.C. law firm Wilmer Hale - called the claims in the lawsuit "fatuous." She argued that Klayman's grievance is derived from what he contends were incomplete responses to Freedom of Information Act requests his organization filed with the State Department. Klayman contends those responses could not have been complete because Hillary Clinton used a private email account and server for all her email and only returned some of her messages to the department at its request last year.

Her last federal litigation experience was defending Duke University against a lawsuit filed by members of the Duke lacrosse team over persecution for a non-existent rape. The university settled out of court for an undisclosed sum.

Mark Steyn on Christopher Lee: Fangs, Light Sabers and a Supernumary Papilla

As he did so often in recent years, Lee gave it his best - to the point where the sincerity of Pa Wonka's scenes with Depp seems weirdly out of place in a film whose heart is icy cold and never shakes the feeling that everyone's only doing it because someone told them it would be an easy way to make a pile of money. By now, Lee, in his mid-eighties, had more work than ever. On the Lord Of The Rings trilogy, he was the only member of the cast who'd actually known Tolkien. Yet my favorite moment in the series isn't even on camera, but in the DVD commentary. It's the scene on top of the tower where Lee's Saruman gets stabbed in the back by Grima Wormtongue, for which the director, Peter Jackson, wanted Lee to let out a scream.

The actor felt obliged to explain to Sir Peter why that would be all wrong. He proposed to let out a small groan, a quiet gasp, as the air is pushed out of his punctured lungs. The director was resistant, so Lee said: "Peter, have you ever heard the sound a man makes when he's stabbed in the back?"

"Um, no," replied Jackson.

"Well, I have," said Lee, "and I know what to do.'" And from somewhere deep in the recesses of his memory an old SOE agent conjured the sound a Nazi makes when you plunge the knife in.

A full life, on-screen and off.

The Grexit is Nigh

Creditors have walked away from Greek negotiators but then as always Europe will delay the inevitable as long as possible, maximizing their pain and disruption.

There is a moment in Greek tragedy, called anagnorisis, where the hero, having pushed past the point of no return due to his own hubris, realizes in a moment of horror the full scope of his folly and the disaster to come. If the Greeks are lucky, something like that might be going on in Athens right now. The eurocrats have stopped talking (usually a reliable sign of the apocalypse), but there's still a way for Greece to come back to the table. Unfortunately, it would require something a lot closer to capitulation than a truly negotiated compromise at this point.

For a number of reasons, though, that might not happen. (And initial signs do not look promising.) Bunker mentality can be a strong force during a crisis-there's a reason why a government in peril (or the hero in Greek tragedy) is often the last to realize what's going on. Furthermore, woven deeply into Syriza's hard-left DNA is a series of impulses that might welcome a final split, either on monetary grounds or for the larger chance to build a Bolivarian-style socialist experiment on the Aegean.

Gawker in the Fight of its Life with Hulk Hogan Sex-Tape Suit

Between unionization and the likely payout from this lawsuit this could spell the end of Gawker. And good riddance.

Nick Denton is preparing for the biggest fight of his life. The Gawker Media founder and C.E.O.'s opponent: celebrated professional wrestler Hulk Hogan (real name: Terry Bollea), who sued Denton and Gawker in 2012 after the gossip blog published a supercut of his sex tape and refused to take it down. The case has seen numerous twists and turns over the past three years, but it's finally set to come to trial in Pinellas County, Fla.-where Hogan lives-on July 6.

Denton faces a judge and jury who are skeptical of, if not outright hostile to, his blog empire and philosophy of reporting the "story behind the story," and some inside Gawker say that they expect the company to lose the case. A loss, and an award of even a fraction of the $100 million Hogan's attorneys are seeking, could empty the company's coffers, forcing Denton to either sell the company outright or to hand much of its equity over to deep-pocketed investors.

Go ahead and call me a chick-flick lover if you want, but I really enjoyed it. Am also surprised it didn't get more love from Oscar, but it's an open secret what AMPAS likes and what the people like are two very different things nowadays.

I'm going to disagree with this notion of Glenn Reynolds' that the hack
of OPM, et al, is the cyber version of Pearl Harbor. It's espionage,
just on a larger scale than has previously been conducted (as far as we
know).

When a cyber attack takes down the electrical grid or the banking industry, then we'll we can talk about "Cyber Pearl Harbor."

Posted by: Country Singer at June 14, 2015 11:19 PM (nL0sw)

I disagree -- the OPM hack, like Pearl Harbor, was specifically targeted toward our military and government. Neither was targeted toward civilian infrastructure or finance. Both were un-announced acts of flagrant aggression. Both will cause large amounts of chaos and wasteful expenditures on ultimately ineffective countermeasures before successful counterstrategies are found.

That's a good question. I've never watched or heard an entire speech by her until Campaign Kickoff: Part Deux, but she was very mechanical. I also noticed that even though there were two teleprompter screens up she didn't use them and relied on a print copy on the lectern. I actually have a copy somewhere in this dump, under my current "compromised computers/bad network/cyberstalking" crap, which is layered over my "why the hell do I have 20 years of Keyboard magazine back-issues blocking access to the actual keyboards I own?" project, which was phase 2 of the "I can't see the damned guitars behind the stack of Guitar Player" project, which overlays the "I never really liked Dr. Dobbs....why did I subscribe for so long and save them?" dealio, which is on top of the "holy crap -- when I went to look at how much computer hardware I should scrap, I started labeling systems with 'A, B, C...' and ran out of letters" situation....

150 That does sound like the first sentence to a Bulwer-Lyton contest entry.

There was actually a Peanuts book where Snoopy was writing a Bulwer-Lytton-esque book, with help from the rest of the gang, and the actual book was printed on slick paper inside.

So fearless but dreaded Horde, what would be another way for Sluggor to end the story?

158 In case nobody mentioned it (I didn't read all the comments) The "NY Post" eviscerated HRC today
It started with a cover picture of a photoshop of Hillary in a Robin Hood costume with a particularly stupid look on her face (a scream/roar smile) and she is getting ready to fire off an arrow. The headline was Haillrt reboots campaign with attack on rich and RODHAM HOOD!"In the bolton right hand corner was an inset picture of a grinning Bill Clinton as Friar Tuck in a monk's tonsure. The article and editorials only got worse after that.

And re "National Review" and why Hillary talks as a robot. I think she had a strokes or several (worse than the media suggested) can't think clearly and she has been programmed to give her special talking points. 172 Here, in its entirely, is Snoopy's novel "It Was a Dark and Stormy Night."

* Part I *

It was a dark and stormy night. Suddenly, a shot rang out! A door slammed. The maid screamed.
Suddenly, a pirate ship appeared on the horizon!
While millions of people were starving, the king lived in luxury. Meanwhile, on a small farm in Kansas, a boy was growing up.

* Part II *

A light snow was falling, and the little girl with the tattered shawl had not sold a violet all day.
At that very moment, a young intern at City Hospital was making an important discovery. The mysterious patient in Room 213 had finally awakened. She moaned softly.
Could it be that she was the sister of the boy in Kansas who loved the girl with the tattered shawl who was the daughter of the maid who had escaped from the pirates?
The intern frowned.
"Stampede!" the foreman shouted, and forty thousand head of cattle thundered down the tiny camp. The two men rolled on the ground grappling beneath the murderous hooves. A left and a right. A left. Another left and right. An uppercut to the jaw. The fight was over. And so the ranch was saved.
The young intern sat by himself in one corner of the coffee shop. He had learned about medicine, but more importantly, he had learned something about life.

THE END

231 Anna, heroes want the Gold, the Girl, the Victory and to be sung about for generations to come after they have been shoveled into (possibly various) grave(s) after being found surrounded by a pile of dead enemies, or possibly after subjecting a kingdom to his will and setting out on games of Empire.

The Conan thing is that the machinations of a corrupt court tend to slip under the hero's guard. I don't know what got Slugor into a fix, but you clearly have to make the death interesting to you, or a way to get him out of it.
There is the Crockett/ El Cid besiegement, full of last minute defenses of the breach and desperate fights in the rubble
There is the Caesar action getting offed by your allies and knowing the bastards will tear each others' guts out within a month
There is the classic capture/imprisonment/blinding,
There is the King Lear type of exile...
There is sudden ambush, pursuit, prey turning at bay to counter ambush like a maddened boar, evasion, hiding in marshes, finding the woodcutters and screwing up the baking of the oat-cakes, and fear of betrayal while planning to retake the kingdom or slip off and join some mercenary band on the marches...

If he's gotta go down you can decide if he has the dagger marks in the front where he was fighting or in the back where he tried to outrun destiny

Also, big forest fire started up in Willow today. For a while we could see McKinley, and then it was blocked out by a huge smoke cloud. This fire, they are fighting, which is rare up here. But lots of folks live up that way, so, God bless those Hot Shots.

Sorry I can't reciprocate with a picture. (My brothers and sisters scarfed everything,up.) My dad is buried with my mom in the Rittman, Oh, veterans cemetery, which is only 4 miles from our house. We left some flowers on Memorial Day. Dad lived to 87, and my horribly lonely mom followed a little lover a year later (they were married 67 years.) The cemetery is only about 15 years old now, but they have made a beautiful place for our fallen soldiers/parents.

See, this is what I'm nervous about. Dad is a little frail these days, since his stroke. Mom can't remember much, but she is healthy as a horse otherwise. She's fine so long as Dad is there to point her in the right direction, but once he fails, heaven only knows what I'm gonna have to do.

250 Hey Jeff, life is good here, the wildfires are far north of us. We get a bit of smoke now and again.

Wildfires up here are mostly left to burn unless there are houses or people in the vicinity. This one in Willow was started by an idiot burning trash and not paying attention, and we had very little snow this winter and now almost no rain, so, it got big fast. The highway to Fairbanks is shut down since the fire jumped the road. Lots of folks and dog teams and such up there. But to my knowledge, everyone evacuated.

Not fun, and we may go up to help once it's all put out.

Just got a real job architecting up here again, so progress is being made. At some point, we may even get out of debt.

267 Apropos of nothing at all, I got a King Dick today. I was parting out an old car, and decided to take out the front bench seat. The bolts were real rusty, and hard to get at, anyway, so I got out the blue-tipped wrench and burned away the bolts and cage nuts on the underside of the floor, which I could easily reach. The left side of the seat broke free of the floor easily, but the right side resisted until I put some muscle on a big pry bar.

And there it was! Lying on the floor, under the passenger side of the seat, was the King Dick! And what's a King Dick, you may ask? Well, it's a pocket-sized monkey wrench, about 4" long, with the knurled adjusting nut embedded in the middle of the handle. Solid steel, and the opening of the jaws is at 90 degrees to the axis of the handle, and quite shallow. The jaw adjustment range is from zero to nearly two inches. I sprayed a little Liquid Wrench on it, and it works slick as can be.

Now, this thing is next to useless as an actual wrench, because jaws too shallow, and too bulky, and handle too short to apply much torque to the fastener. You could probably loosen the nuts that hold a bicycle wheel to the forks, if you were pressed, but that's about it.

But it's got "King Dick" stamped right on the sliding jaw, all in capital letters, with the K and D in a larger font. How cool is that?

We went to a window unit in the bedroom for just that very reason.....then finally went whole-house HVAC being that it was getting old hanging out in the bedroom (in the dark) all day. I can totally sympathize, and you're making the right choice.

When I lived in a place that got to 127 one year, our dogs loved to hang out in a cheap-o plastic kiddie pool -- the kind you can get for $20 at Walmart. They'd submerge their bodies and rest their chins on the edge.

311 Alberta - 271 Is that the wrench?

Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at June 15, 2015 01:14 AM (F2IAQ)

Indeed it is. I went out to the garage and fetched it. Man! beautiful evening out there. Jupiter and Venus shining in the western sky, buildings silhouetted against the fading twilight. A few clouds on the horizon, but clear, starry sky overhead, and still, no wind. Not quite full dark, but I needed my flashlight to pick my way through the debris field.

Yep, this wrench is exactly 4 inches long, and is like the picture, with the radius on the moving jaw.

317 At WDW, the Animal Kingdom park has a very nice hippo enclosure that allows them to show their natural behavior. The hippos go off to forage for food on land, then come back to the water for safety and digestion....and eventual excretion, whereupon all the fish who have evolved to eat hippo shit go nuts.

Remember, these are nutrients from Outside the Water, making their first appearance in an aquatic setting. There is a strong evolutionary bias towards being the first to exploit these nutrients.

(1) Ever considered doing the ductwork switcheroo to make the big boy cool the bedroom in 1/10 of a second? The small units do tend to last about four years -- and most of 'em don't have fittings to be recharged, they're just crimped-off, so they're throwaways.

(2) The pool will be an adaptation thing -- he won't go near it at first, you'll put him in it and he'll get all pissy, he'll start drinking out of it, he'll start standing in it to drink out of it....but, like I said, our dogs eventually got to lolling in it with their heads on the rim. Then they'd stand up, shake off, and trot around going, "I'm cooler than you are!" until they were dry and hot again -- when they'd climb back in.

(3) Emails remain a bad idea. Once I get my contacts back, I'll be lighting things back up (with a different email addy). OTOH, there is a certain situation that I am concerned about......and I think we talked past each other. So I'd like to clarify here by being intentionally confusing.

Someone (A) was trying to backchannel me. They thought they could through (B), possibly about a third party (C). (B), in fact, can only backchannel me through email [down]. You had mentioned something about knowing the (A) situation. (B) had mentioned sharing a telephone number.

I'm very concerned about (A), but if (A) was concerned about (C) and not on (A)'s own behalf, it's safer that I never contact (A) and that (C) be taken care of. If you know the (A) situation and (A) is under control, please advise and I will stop fishing for ways to backchannel (A).

Furthermore, if you know that (C) is under control, please advise so I can wallow in my own problems and not risk infecting anyone else.

Chief among which is cultivate human contacts at somewhere nearby. If Fidelity gets hacked, your retirement can be gone in seconds and you'll be notified when 1099's come out. If LocalYokel Credit Union is used to seeing you, you'll drop by next week and they'll say, "someone tried to hack your butt last week but they didn't know the name of your dog -- so we just laughed at them."

380 (1) I don't have central. Just a ginomrmous window unit. Ductwork would be very very Sanford & Son.
And the little units don't get tossed until they get scrapped.

(2) I may take some materials I have lying around & make a pool. If he won't use it, I will! Heck, I can even put an old sillcock on it to drain old water pretty easily.

(3) Here is where I need the bourbon to follow along...

Bear in mind that I was speculating about why (A) was trying to contact you. But I suspect it was about (C). (A) was looking for (B) first, i believe, tried for you, then asked (D) about me, but I was sleeping.

I have no backchannel to either (A) or (C), btw. Can only catch them when I see them here.

That said, I believe (A) was simply concerned for (C), and assumed (wrongly) that(B) had been in touch.
I'll bee keeping my eyes open -especially for (A) so I can confirm this and put everyone's mind at ease.
As to (C) - I really think we can only wait for the next cryptic message.

I hope I got all the characters right...

I don't want to sound too negative -- there is a nonzero probability that this massive data breach will not result in massive problems. I certainly wouldn't bet that way, nor would I commit any of my resources to a scenario where "no adverse consequences" was an input.....

If you're sick, only 2 things can happen: either you'll get better or you'll die.

If you get better, why worry?

If you go to Heaven, why worry?

If you go to Hell, you'll be so damn busy shaking hands with friends, you won't have time to worry ...

You seem to concur that (A) was really concerned about (C), and that I shouldn't concern myself with contacting (A). Problem being, I'm not exactly sure who (C) might be. I'd like to help. I have a feeling I need to check in with (B) once I HAVE MY EMAIL CONTACTS BACK.

397 So there's a documentary called Hot Girls Wanted on Netflix, about the amateur pron business. Not really anything earth shattering in it for me, if you have a basic understanding of the industry it's probably not worth your time.

It is sad though to see how many of these girls appear to just not be very bright and unable to get out after they reach the 2-3 month expiration date for "traditional" pron and have to start doing fetish scenes that are often violent and abusive. (not trying to scold anyone, I'm as guilty of watching it as the next moron, just thought I'd mention the doc)

Still don't get who (D) might be. I've been concerned about (C) myself, at times (not hyper-sensitive at the moment) -- but all my contact info is on the drive I won't get back for a few days.

If (B) gave (C)'s phone # to (A) [since it wasn't me or you and (B) said he gave a phone], that might be the best possible outcome right there.

OK, I'll be able to sleep tonight. If you would do me a solid and ask (B) to confirm that the phone drop was from (A) to (C), then everything's done. Please pass on my regards to (A) [via (B)], (B), and [by proxy] (C). They probably little know how dear they are to me.

That is what happens when you don't write your own stump speech. Skiming it in the limo on the way with the first time one reads it entirely is when it is given from the teleprompter will give the jagged delivery. That is why Nixon had the tapes. So his speech writers understood his off the cuff flow and work it into his speeches not collect evidence for his impeachment.

Colt has been sucking off the government tit for far to long on the AR's they sold to them. They do not make what could best be described as 'a wide array' of guns and because they put all their eggs in one basket they are now up the creek without a paddle and are about to start wading.

So why are people claiming that the Jurassic Park movie is sexist?

Do characters in the movie claim that the dinosaurs are acting all hostile because they're having their periods?

Are the female human characters not using the movie to bitch about rape culture?

Was their female nudity for no logical reason? Actually lesbians probably would like that.

*
*
When I read the headline last week that JW was "a big sexist mess," I knew right off I had to see it. Our Politically Cowed media would never complain about a movie that was sexist against men; so it meant the film showed men in a positive light. And so it did. Pratt's character is sharp, doesn't apologize for things that are true or that have to be done, and Gets Them Done. The redhead lady displays a good character arc; she starts off as someone who understands marketing and spreadsheets more than she does her nephews. But when things Go Really Bad, she yells for Pratt's character to help, backs him up, and doesn't get in his way.

Y'know, the way men and women used to be portrayed in movies.

428 One of HIlary's biggest problems is her actual speaking voice. I seriously doubt she can get elected sounding like that. Her voice is shrill and harsh, and if someone were to eq her levels with, say, a bit too much high end, well, it would even make matters worse. A person's speaking voice, the timbre, the frequency, the resonance have a lot to do with perceptions of leadership and competence. A voice has a subtle almost sub conscience influence on people. I predict that she could lose because of her voice alone. The repubes should do all they can to exploit her awful speaking voice. Seriously! Every ad they run with her in it should make her sound as shrill, harsh, and thin as possible.
