SECOND HACK STEALS SENSIITVE PERSONAL INFORMATION OF 2.9 MILLION MILITARY & INTELLIGENCE OFFICERS SEEKING SECURITY CLEARANCES

And fourteen million were exposed in the first hack, the one originally claimed to have merely (ahem) exposed 4.7 million.

Obama's as angry as anyone about this!

AP's Ken Dillian and Ted Bridis:

WASHINGTON (AP) — Several U.S. officials say hackers linked to China appear to have gained access to sensitive background information submitted by intelligence and military personnel seeking security clearances. The break is the second cyberbreach of federal records revealed in a week and could dramatically compound the potential damage.

The forms believed accessed, known as Standard Form 86, require applicants to fill out deeply personal information about mental illnesses, drug and alcohol use, past arrests and bankruptcies. They also require the listing of contacts and relatives, potentially exposing any foreign relatives of U.S. intelligence employees to coercion. The applicant's Social Security number and that of his or her cohabitant are required.

The officials declined to be quoted by name because the details are classified.

The Office of Personnel Management had no immediate comment.

Correction: I confused two numbers. The original AP article was very brief; now they've added more.

The fourteen million figure refers to the number exposed in the first hack.

The second hack exposed 2.9 million more:

Nearly all of the millions of security clearance holders, including CIA, National Security Agency and military special operations personnel, are potentially exposed in the security clearance breach, the officials said. More than 2.9 million people had been investigated for a security clearance as of October 2014, according to government records.

In the hack of standard personnel records announced last week, two people briefed on the investigation disclosed Friday that as many as 14 million current and former civilian U.S. government employees have had their information exposed to hackers, a far higher figure than the 4 million the Obama administration initially disclosed.

I sure hope Obama enjoys the shit out of his Golf and Sports Center this weekend. God knows, he's deserved it.

He's like James Brown -- he just works too hard for us. His stagehands have to guide him off the stage, because otherwise he'd give us So Much Show it would give him a heart attack.

Oh, by the way, the Administration is being as candid as usual with you:

12 Also, yesterday I made a mostly snarky comment implying that the "upside" to the hack was the at least it affected only govt. workers. And later in the thread, people took offense at that.

First of all, I apologize. Mostly I was just joking and being snarky.

Second, I wrote that comment prior to all the updates saying the hack was much bigger and applied to contractors and military and so forth. When I was snarking, I thought the hack only affected feet-on-the-desk beltway career do-nothings and Big Govt petty fascists. Minutes later, I realized it as a much bigger problem.

So -- sorry!

THe ultimate goal of Obama's form of Corporatist Socialism is to have 100% of the employed citizenry working for the Federal Government. Half the workers will be part of a massive all-emcompassing bureaucracy, and the other half in nationalized industries.

The other name for this type of economic system, when it was first proposed in Italy in 1919, is Fascism. Not lower-case euphemism for "bad" fascism, but the actual economic-political philosophy known as Fascism, which really is corporatist socialism.

Including spies working under carefully constructed aliased cover identities who can now potentially be identified via data mining.

Remember that a large chunk of the organized crime in the USA today is made up of Chinese triads and tongs. PRC intelligence view those as useful auxiliaries, you can be sure.

324 So I've enjoyed reading this blog for some time, but this is the first I've been moved to comment.

As a Captain in the Army, and I am very familiar with the Standard Form 86, and it is not simply a source of personal information that could cause the loss of personal information. The Standard Form 86 is essentially a biography covering the past 10 years of the applicant's personal life.

On this form, you must spell out in great detail all the places you lived, worked, and went to school, the people you were close to, with their addresses and methods of contacting them. You must list your entire immediate family, and much of your extended family and provide their addresses and methods of contacting them. It will contain any and all criminal history, financial or legal problems, and other issues the applicant may have.

As far as a personnel data spillage (as no doubt the data loss was as a result of a "spear phishing attack, and therefore the data which, at least should have been, in the secure server was compromised), this is probably as bad as it can get, as it gives such people every piece of information necessary to do grievous personal harm to anyone who has applied for a security clearance.

BTW - a seemingly innocuous bit of info they ask is about your family and loved ones. Who may have a hold sway in your life or matter to you. Foreign or domestic. Like loved ones in China.

Also - I wouldn't be surprised if info on people who have sought to purchase a firearm or get a liquor license was taken. A lot less info, but depending on who actually got hacked. Where.

I just got through cleaning up the mess caused by the Target breach. (Used my bank debit card at Target - big mistake! On the last day of the hack too...Yay me!) Scumbags waited four months to start empting out my checking account Valentine's Day in the evening, when I guess they thought multiple purchases wouldn't raise as much suspicion.
Now I'm getting emails at work (DHS) saying "All is well." "We'll let you know if YOUR information was hacked." But no word on howthey plan on mitigating this disaster. My sister in Canada was having a good laugh yesterday until I let her in on the fun factoid that they got all of HER information that was in my TS security clearance SF-86 too! So now she she gets to join in on the fun!
There are no words.....I....just....there are no words......
Thank god I am just one of the peons they thought was too useless to blackmail, and my info was simplysold down the river to the Darknet immediately. Just todayI discovered someone trying to use my email (included in the SF-86!) to try to open a new account.

When my mother was at the tender age of 19, she got the hots for a dude on campus. Then she learned he was a Red. So, despite being completely apolitical, to impress the guy and get into his inner circle (and into his pants), she actually joined The Communist Party.

Their affair was brief, but the FBI had moles everywhere and eventually got their hands on the entire membership list.

Luckily, this was during the transitional period when previously you'd be blackballed for being a known Red, to the new era when it became a hip badge of honor to being a pioneering radical. So it didn't really affect her too much. But they (the Feds) kept tabs on her whole family (that includes me) for a while.

Thanks to Bruce Jenner, we have established that DNA is not destiny so just as a Y chromosome no longer establishes that someone is male, it follows that a lack of African DNA does not mean that someone is not African-American and therefore entitled to all the affirmative action benefits they can get. This is actually good news. It means that we are well on the way to becoming a color blind meritocracy. Just like taking the SAT test is a preliminary process when applying for university admission, so too will be having one's race classification assigned to whatever is most advantageous. This means the end of the discrimination against Asian students and it also means that the faces on university campuses are likely to be a lot paler even though the entire freshman class will be categorized as black.

579 News on the OPM hack is not being served up by google or bing. You have to search for it. You have to know about it to search for it and all you get is the bare minimum of reporting.

So the chance of reporting its outing are minuscule.

581 The only data that Obozo's administration can protect is his birth certificate and college transcripts. Everything else his information security pants are down and his ankles, he's bent over and says "probe as you will". Just for Reggie Love and the Chinese, and whoever else wants a piece of the Obama administration.

583 And here I was thinking my military service to nation had brought me nothing. Not so, and I'm appalled at my ungratefulness. Now I can be publicly humiliated, financially ruined *and* killed on a VA waiting list.

And to think I was just going to have to settle for being socially despised. Thank God the U.S. takes care of its own.

588 I have a friend who has received Top Secret clearance on more than one occasion. He's thrilled that his information has been grabbed by someone.

Oh, did I say thrilled? I mean he's super pissed.

589 So, for the past few years, military service members have been told NOT to post on social media because terrorists might find out their personal details and target them and their families. Now we find OPM does not protect files that have detailed personal data on them, their families, co-workers and neighbors. Great. Just. Stinkin'. Great. Your gubmint, in action.

591 You want the O-man to be really mad? Put it on ESPN in the morning, and push nothing but this.

That's the way I felt when Tiger Woods got the shit beat out of him by his wife. Son-of-a-bitch's status report kept interrupting my Alabama-Auburn game. I've never forgiven him...not for diddling around, but for interrupting the one fucking game of the year I care about. Son-of-a-bitch can fry for all I care.

Oh, wait. So yeah...that's what you do to make the masturbator-in-chief actually care about the story.

593 "most CIA security clearance files not at OPM"

Some are more equal it seems. If the Feds had any futuristic nous any more, they would have aimed to decentralise everything into myriad local systems. That was the genius behind the internet, and friggin communist internationale with it's multiple cells. So the geniuses think progess means putting all the eggs in one giant basket. How 1850!

596 I was chatting with Barky over a Wedgie in the limo and I gave him some ideas.

This is a perfect time to hire David Axelrod to comb through those 4 million records and find all the Republicans.

Then we pick a Pub as a patsy blame him and fire all of the rest of the Pubs - all in one stroke. Then we wash rinse and spin in Op-ed section of the NYT. That would solve Barky's image problems!

I love the smell of 4 million wedgied rectums in the morning. Good day.
