Wait, wait, wait. Let me see if I can follow this:
The Obama Administration initially lied for political purposes, claiming the hacking was not such a big deal. They hoped to establish the Narrative -- a false Narrative, a fiction, a lie -- in people's brains such that the spot in their minds reserved for "OPM Hack" would say "Not a big deal, not very important" and would serve to block any additional, contrary information from filling in that space. They let this lie fester for weeks (as people's Social Security Numbers, TS clearances, etc.) were held in the hands of foreign hackers -- all because they were afraid of the political impact (which would be negligible) of the truth. This doesn't sound at all like the Barack Obama Administration I know. Why, he never dissembles with an opening, nothing-to-see-here lie in hopes that people will be bored by the story and will not be interested in follow up pieces. And why would he try such a stratagem? It would surely never work on our media -- they're all diligent, expert geniuses with a laser-like focus on all important things. Just ask them! WASHINGTON (AP) -- Hackers stole personnel data and Social Security numbers for every federal employee, a government worker union said Thursday, saying that the cyber theft of U.S. employee information was more damaging than the Obama administration has acknowledged. Sen. Harry Reid, the Democratic leader, said on the Senate floor that the December hack into Office of Personnel Management data was carried out by "the Chinese" without specifying whether he meant the Chinese government or individuals. Reid is one of eight lawmakers briefed on the most secret intelligence information. U.S. officials have declined to publicly blame China, which has denied involvement. J. David Cox, president of the American Federal of Government Employees, said in a letter to OPM director Katherine Archuleta that based on OPM's internal briefings, "We believe that the Central Personnel Data File was the targeted database, and that the hackers are now in possession of all personnel data for every federal employee, every federal retiree, and up to one million former federal employees." The OPM data file contains the records of non-military, non-intelligence executive branch employees, which covers most federal civilian employees but not, for example, members of Congress and their staffs. The union believes the hackers stole military records and veterans' status information, address, birth date, job and pay history, health insurance, life insurance, and pension information; and age, gender and race data, he said. The letter was obtained by The Associated Press. The union said it is basing its assessment on internal OPM briefings. The agency has sought to downplay the damage, saying what was taken "could include" personnel file information such as Social Security numbers and birth dates.

The law needs to make credit-grantors liable for credit they improperly grant and needs to make it a criminal offense to impersonate someone else for purposes of theft of goods or services.
Today, each of us is responsible for monitoring our own credit information and credit granted in our names. People steal that info all the time and police treat it like a minor annoyance. They put more time and effort tracking down traffic ticket scofflaws than they do Identity Theft criminals.
Both my parents have been victims multiple times, two of my siblings as well. One woman in the town next to me was shocked to find Bank of America had declared a mortgage on her property in default, a mortgage she never incurred!
Maybe now, with their favorite people (federal employees) affected, Congress will finally take on the credit card lobby and change things.

I'm a small l libertarian, and I really detest the idea of a national ID card, but the defacto truth is a SS# and a drivers/ID license is needed to live in today's world. SO I propose that we begin discussions on having DC create such a system, with some kind of ultra secure server to protect the password/biometric that would go with the new IDs.
Otherwise, none of us are going to have any hope of stopping having our identity stolen by some script kiddie.

I was born in '68 so I can't recall the period when everyone was convinced the nation was tearing itself apart (for good or ill). But my guess is, even then conservatives could hold to the belief that the core was still intact, despite attacks, corruption and fecklessness.
Now, today, it seems there's nothing left to count on, as the foundations have been (or are being) thoroughly undermined from the very institutions that we rely on to defend it. The whole center not holding thing. So now, hopelessness in spades is starting to set it far more profoundly than in, say, 1970.

We did our duck and cover stuff, but you could see the panic in the eyes of the teachers. My school was three blocks from Stapleton airport in Denver. I found out later that because the airport had runways long enough to handle B52's, it was indeed a target.
All that the duck and cover would have meant for me was that I would have been a more compact piece of charcoal.

Brooks in San Antonio a few years ago was couriering off site their back-up tapes for USAF/ANG/USAFR medical records. And somehow... the contractor's car was relieved of these tapes. And USAF assured everyone that no nothing would come of this but here is a year of free credit monitoring...

As I keep pointing out, the playbook that was run against Mitt Romney in 2012 was one that they pulled off the shelf and dusted off, having previously run the essentially identical playbook against Fiorina in her Commiefornia Senate race.

Fiorina got clocked among working class whites. The very same demographic who two years later on a larger scale were also none too thrilled with Romney.
Or at least not with the caricatures of Fiorina and Romney with which Democratic attack ads presented them. That bloc of working whites have endured a shit-ton of layoffs, pay cuts, benefit cuts, and curtailed life prospects, and aren't much liking anyone who reminds them of the people who inflicted these injuries.
I kinda figure that winning working class whites is going to matter a lot next year. Especially in that upper Midwest place. Maybe think about picking someone who isn't going to be on the back foot with them straight away.

By "core" I meant the more or less commonly held adherence to the fundamentals of the United States as founded...respect for the Constitution and Bill of Rights, the rule of law, free speech/thought, etc. All of that has been largely negated, seems to me. It's like finding a plastic model kit built in the '60s that the glue has deteriorated and so is now falling to pieces, but now no one knows how to glue it back together, are prevented from doing so, or that most believe it's better off in pieces because it'll somehow magically be replaced by a better kit instead of a box of plague-ridden feces. Bad analogy but you get the point.

We wouldn't have survived, Ivan certainly knew where we were.
They were sufficiently concerned for us to be weapons free in the event of a security breach, thank God nothing happened during the wait. No incidents at all, which I put down to the incessant training we did.
