The new bed was perfect. But it meant the old bed had to go. With no small amount of huffing / puffing my wife and I dragged off the mattress and put it in the sun porch, but how to get it downstairs and out on the boulevard for the trash persons?Answer: close the door to the sun porch and forget about it. Eventually one's wife will ask "is that going to stay there forever?" and you can say, if you are so bold, of course not; in the short term the house will fall down. In the long term the sun will expand in a fiery ball of all-consuming destruction before it collapsing into a dense brooding cinder. Not sure I get your point. Nothing lasts forever. I used to think the universe would eventually contract back into a single point then begin again in an inconceivable explosion, an idea that made the birth and death and rebirth of the firmaments something akin to the rise and fall of breath, but I'm starting to think that universes pop out of black holes in an endlessly renewing sequence of creation, with the old universes eventually fading away through heat death like an expired gust of life that takes a billion billion years to exhale and fade away. I'd like it to be so, because it's intellectually and emotionally satisfying, and that's should make one suspect of the theory. The laws of the universe are not written with our own happiness in mind. The universe is pitiless; the only act of grace it contains is the creation of circumstances in which intelligent life can arise, behold it, and seek out its mysteries. Which is a bit self-centered, really. It's like having kids just so they can write your biography.

Why Does Ursula K. Le Guin Hate Amazon?
Mostly because she's old (85) and she doesn't like capitalism. Here's her rant:
[Amazon's] ideal book is a safe commodity, a commercial product written to the specifications of the current market, that will hit the BS list, get to the top, and vanish. Sell it fast, sell it cheap, dump it, sell the next thing. No book has value in itself, only as it makes profit. Quick obsolescence, disposability - the creation of trash - is an essential element of the BS machine. Amazon exploits the cycle of instant satisfaction/endless dissatisfaction. Every book purchase made from Amazon is a vote for a culture without content and without contentment.
And here is Tyler Cowan's rebuttal:
The same argument was made in the late 1990s against chain bookstores like Border's. It wasn't a good argument then (see Tyler's masterpiece, In Praise of Commercial Culture) but at least at that time it was debatable. Le Guin's attempt to resurrect the argument today is bizarre. Does anyone doubt that it is easier to buy a niche book today than it ever has been in the entire history of the world? Indeed, does anyone doubt that it is easier to buy a Ursula K. Le Guin book today than it ever has been in the entire history of the world?Larger markets support greater variety. A bookstore that only sells locally can't stock many books. It's the smaller store that fears taking a risk because the opportunity cost of shelf space is so high. Amazon lowers the cost of stocking books through efficient logistics and by warehousing in relatively low-cost areas (subject to being close to markets). The fixed costs of distribution are then spread over a much larger (inter)-national market so it pays to stock many more books.
Amazon makes a lot of money selling niche books. The precise numbers are debatable because Amazon doesn't release much data but Brynjolfsson, Hu and Smith estimated that the long-tail accounted for nearly 40% of Amazon sales in 2008, a number that had risen over time. Indeed, since costs aren't that different it's not obvious that Amazon makes much more from selling a million copies of a single book than from 10 copies of each of 100,000 books (especially if they are ebooks).
In fact Amazon caters to niche interests and makes books on esoteric subjects economically viable by connecting them to customers with those specific interests anywhere in the US at any time.

Not only did she file a gag order request in the wrong court but it turns out that she may have helped set up the conditions for Freddie Gray's arrest in the first place:
Second, it has been revealed that Mosby directed Baltimore police to ramp up narcotics patrols with increased "targeting" at an intersection near where Freddie Gray was arrested. Mosby's directive does not, of course, bear on the question of whether police officers committed crimes in their treatment of Gray after he was arrested. An order to ramp up patrols isn't an invitation to injure people.However, Mosby's directive seems to undercut what's left of the criminal charges she filed in connection with Gray's arrest, as opposed to his treatment thereafter.
...Here's where her directive to target the location of the arrest for ramped up narcotics patrols comes into play. As Megyn Kelly and Trace Gallagher pointed out last night, the Supreme Court has ruled that reasonable suspicion is enough to stop an individual who flees unprovoked in a high crime area. Mosby's directive will make it difficult for her to argue that the area from which Gray fled is not a high crime area.

In 1943, Vesta Stoudt had a job in a munitions factory where ammo cases were sealed with paper tape and melted wax. This is the type of bullshit that runs folks out of blogging. It's time consuming and exhausting to fight the battles with spam and trolls and try to keep and open forum for folks to come and go without registration.
I kicked off my blog again last year and just the fight to battle spam alone was enough to make me throw in the towel once again.

I've known a couple of women married to physically abusive men. It is very frustrating because for whatever reason, they won't face reality.
One woman had her boyfriend arrested when he hit her in front of his young daughter. She took him back and married him. She said that he only hit her because he was out of cocaine. The marriage lasted 1 year.
When Judge Judy gets these cases in front of her where a woman brings up that a man hit her, she asks the woman if she went back to sharing a bed with him afterwards.

I have three things that I do every time I visit Portland to see family. The first is always a trip to Powell's bookstore. They have a lot of stuff that I simply won't be able to find anywhere else. In fact, the girl who was thrown to the ground by the white cop was not some random party attendee, but was one of the 15-year-old DimeGirls -- which accounted for her disrespectful attitude, because she thought she was a "star" of the show.

So, in my last gig in internal audit, I had this very talented Filipina woman working for me who probably weighed 80 pounds soaking wet -- and I'm more than 80 pounds over my optimum weight. We had to do an audit on an English subsidiary of the client so we showed up the first day and set up in cubes -- and the staffers there were looking at me like I'd brought a 12-year-old girl along.
So, I went around and started to pull data and stack it up in her cube, and stacked, and stacked....until, in spots, it was actually higher than her head. And she started buzzing through it. At the end of that first day, we'd tested hundreds of transactions and found something like 15 clear violations of company policy.....and they were looking at her with actual fear in their eyes.
Anyway, at the end of that first visit, the director of the English subsidiary invited us to a social dinner and mentioned that you could only defend yourself in your own home with a chef's knife if you could prove that you were actually cooking when the assailant broke in. And my tiny auditor blurted out, "you're fucking kidding me."
Fortunately, the director and his wife began heartily laughing instead of taking offense. But, yeah....it's unimaginable to the average American.

It's been a long tradition in my family to NOT support the Red Cross. Ever since my grt uncle was charged for coffee by them in WW II.
I've heard excuses that the French govt made them do that, don't know, don't care.
They paid Lizzy Dole and others too much to head the organization. Why can't any of these groups find some rich volunteer to head them instead of paying millions?

We all use the fillers to some extent to soften speech or just announce our intent to make a point. And yeah, it can easily become a crutch.
In conversational Japanese, if you want to sound polite, it's required to use fillers to broach a new topic particularly when speaking in polite speech to elders, superiors, etc.

Amazon does offer used book options for some books. For a wider range of options, you can also check abebooks dot com and alibris dot com, both of which offer books sold by small book stores who choose to join their networks.
I rebuilt my entire SF library with old first or near-first edition paperbacks (Poul Anderson, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, Keith Laumer, etc.) using these sources. It was doing the research, searching and purchasing.

Old trick that President Obama never learned, or thought sounded too academic, is to say nothing at all when you're stuck or thinking, just pause. It makes you seem deep and thoughtful, and is actually dramatic. Takes a while to get used to and in conversation rude or impatient people will start talking to fill the silence out of nerves or confusion sometimes, but it works well for public speaking.

I got a Bernard Cornwell book there once, yeah. They pickings are spare but you can find some gems. I have seriously considered buying copies of my books and seeding the local Dollar Tree stores. They don't have any UPC reader, so you can guerrilla market their shelves still.

We're home for three days and then it's off to El Paso for the National Open Tournament. I'll be bowling about twelve to fourteen games over three days, and I hope to do well. Scores are low this year because it's a difficult oil pattern.
I'll be glad when it's over. Today we drove from Wendover, Nevada to Denver. About nine hours, but I'm glad to be home. I'm also glad I had the foresight to stock up on beer before I left. I'm on my fourth.

I've gotten a full can by asking for it more recently, but I'm 99.9% sure it was already opened for me. I think they just poured the drink into my cup and then left the can with me.

Superglue was created as a battlefield quick bandage so its not surprising that would work well. I'm not sure why they didn't keep using it for that, it is an excellent way to bind wounds up.

We should be almost ready to list by Sunday, we're leaving for Mexico on vacation Monday early AM.
So that's not going to happen until we get back.
Plus we've had the following in the past 10 days:
Gingy's car went tits up, turned out to be the main computer: $1800 to fix
Our third car, the pickup went down: $375 to fix
The remodel of the downstairs from before all this shit came due: $1200
The basement decided to leak like a sieve, that's being fixed tomorrow: $3500
That's not counting movers, painters or landscape men. Get the picture? I'm getting fleeced like a sheep at Rhinebeck, and none of it is for the house that I really wanted, my lifelong dream house. We're just moving into another development. A nicer one, but it's a lateral move, not a move up. I thought this would be my opportunity to land the forever house, but it's just the "lot nicer" house. Oh well, something to work towards. Again. I thought I'd done that. *sigh*

Each of them as motivated to be there as I was - and several of them also opting for double helpings, and having to connive to get there in the first place. These guys are the most literal definition of "allies".
A good friend present in southern Iraq at the time can describe the intense competition/skulduggery Polish officers engaged in to stay longer - as serving alongside the USMC, in a war, pretty much exceeded any possible measurement of prestige, gratification, and excitement for a Polish officer. (I can only imagine the fury and humiliation of Spanish military personnel in Iraq when their country pathetically, histrionically, surrendered to idiotic terrorism after the Madrid train bombings)
So, free-ridership - gigantic disastrous problem. But underneath, an incredibly vexing, even infuriating reality of other people with a clue, trapped in countries unworthy of their sense and virtue.

I have a vague memory here about someone with a Saab who changed out their own headlight, and then had to pay a couple of hundred bucks to have a dealership service tech register the new headlight with the car's various computers. (Imagine the fun now that there are no more Saab dealers.)
One of my neighbors used to drive a classic diesel Mercedes. The sum total of the electrical systems on the car: radio, lights, wipers, heater blower, fuel pump, starter, glow plugs. Not a single bit of it digital or electronic. All these subsystems are independent of one another. That damn thing will still be around and driveable in the year 2050.

We mainly run on a half-dozen -- the main/social one in my room, the financial one in my room, the main one in the fiancee's room, the tiny traveling computer, the one on the dining room table, and the Windows Server piece-of-shit that's supposed to keep everything backed up. But I went through and identified all the boxes I had stashed around and ended-up totally cycling through A-Z and having to start on AA, AB, AC.....

The blood repository at any hospital you go to will do the two-minute check before issuing any blood whether or not you had bracelets, armbands, tattoos, or anything else. There's a girl from High School who went into that field that I chanced to talk to after she was happily married with two kids......blood bank operations was a convenient subject to talk about.

In the movie Terminator 2, Sarah aptly describes one side of the argument -- The future is not set. But QM implies that you live in BOTH futures. It just depends on a choice you made, or didn't make. Both can exist at the same time, but in the current you only see one. Choose differently, and you're in a different future. OK, so I was sloppy and was late to my own NHL season, which begins around Memorial Day (a joke the youngsters never get). So I missed the finals games until now, and hadn't seen either team before. Watched half of tonight's game.
I have never seen such a disparity in basic skills between two teams. The Tampa Bay team, for the most part, completely outclasses the Blackhawk players on the level of basic skills, strength, speed, even size. There were stretches of the game tonight that resembled two teams from different levels of recreational hockey. Tampa players would (consistently and sometimes easily) out-muscle Chicago players for the puck, lift their sticks, "pick their pockets" in their own zones. Blackhawks repeatedly did painfully stupid passes right to opposing players - in the slot, in their own zone - of the sort you cringe at in your own league play. But in the Stanley Cup?
Tampa players were making plays you see in scrimmages against over-matched opponents - close to the net, last-minute look-away passes, "extra" passes that result (if they work) in basically open-net slam goals. Toward the end, in the final flurries, when Chicago was just flailing helplessly around their net, I saw a play I've seen a million times in scrimmage and recreational play but never in pro play at any level. A Tampa player behind the net shot the puck so as to carrom off one of the bewildered and overwhelmed Blackhawks, including the goalie, back into their own net. He missed and it didn't work, but for a pro to actually try that - in the last minute of a Stanley Cup game - was amazing.
Don't care who wins, fan of neither team. But if Chicago wins this it will be amazing. At least forthe 2nd/3rd periods tonight - even though they won - they weren't in the same league with their opponents. Oh - and no fights (excuse me, pro-wrestling interludes)- or even idiotic jaw-boning stand-offs. Amazing how the b.s. disappears when the stakes are sufficient.

Gonna be getting one of the relocated AHL farm teams here next year. Prices look reasonable. Season ticket may be a bit much (in terms of time commitment) but a partial plan, sure. Good quality play. And in the minors nobody jogs out their grounders (actually doesn't apply in hockey, as you'd be cut or crippled by opposing players if you played at any level below 100%, but gets at the attitude thing).

The actual info was that the Google folks were sincerely and enthusiastically about the mission of making water run uphill (i.e., magically create cheaper electricity that didn't contribute to their imagined, implausible, bugaboo of AGW). Not about personal jealousy. Actual substantive cluelessness. Especially about economics. From billionaires.
My main point was the astonishing - and catastrophic - economic illiteracy among the "elite". (who aren't, in almost any sense)

The hamburger joint couldn't really ask for the hamburger back since they had eaten it before complaining.
Then I recall the time I fell in with a bunch of college students who had figured out they could get half price meals at Burger King by dressing as homeless people while I continued to pay full price.
But I still have my self respect. Well, no, on second thought, no, I don't.

When you epoxy a garage floor, do a test patch first and give it a while.
I made a herculean effort, used the best materials, and it didn't stick for shit.
Probably works great on brandy-new concrete. Mine's from 19 and 48.

Marine sniper Matt Hughes was participating in the 2003 invasion of Iraq,
looking for a perfect occasion to shoot some dudes from really far away. He
found it in two Iraqi troops who were holding up the offensive. Hughes was
ordered to take them out. And not out to dinner, unless they both ordered a lead steak. A tiny one, shaped like
a bullet.
The problem was
that the wind was blowing tremendously. See, this is something that doesn't
come up in the movies -- when you're trying to shoot from far away with any
kind of wind, you have almost
no goddamned idea where the bullet will end up. Sniping isn't just
holding the cross hairs steady on the tiny soldier in the scope; it's trying to
predict gusts of wind that could push the bullet into some innocent tree trunk
50 feet away. And yes, that's how much of a difference wind can make. You can
not only miss the guy, but miss the whole house he's standing in.
Oh, and as if
his fate were being written by the vengeful spirit of a vaudeville comedian,
Hughes discovered that his targets were a little over a half mile away, which,
powerful wind notwithstanding, was beyond the range of the rifle he was using.
To make matters worse (and yes, there apparently was still room for them to get
worse), the enemy soldier he was targeting was covered in a fortified position,
with only a small portion of his head and torso exposed. Hughes would have only
one chance, because if he took a shot and missed, the Iraqi would simply duck
completely behind cover and never come back up. It'd be like if Luke Skywalker
had been commanded to park his X-Wing at the beginning of the trench, and to
lean out of the cockpit with a grenade wedged in his ass and try to power-shit
it into the Death Star's exhaust port.
Cackling in the
face of insurmountable odds, Hughes did his best to judge, based on the haze
from the heat, how to aim the rifle to hit his target. His judgment led him to
aim the shot 56 feet to the left and 38 feet high, which is another way of
saying "Hughes pointed his gun in a totally unrelated goddamn direction."
Either way, Hughes
presumably prayed to the sniper gods and let off his first and only possible
shot, not even remotely pointed toward his target, and watched as the arc of
the bullet formed the shape of a giant banana and struck the enemy soldier
directly in the chest. Needless to say, the Iraqi was killed, though we're
fairly certain his last words were the equivalent of "Oh, no fucking
way."

I always think of them as porters, building maintenance, hospital workers, etc. But I guess those jobs cross over to the govt. sector.

Horrible, horrible death.
One day years ago on the rider mower in some high grass, I hit a ground nest, and was instantly in the middle of a huge cloud of very unhappy bees. Fortunately, they were what I call "would-bees," big guys that don't sting, but that many could almost scare me to death with the buzzing. Anyway, soon as I saw I was (relatively) safe, I just turned off the tractor, sat a while, then slowly climbed down, and walked away. If they'd been stinging, I'd've been in bad shape.
OTOH
There was a day a single panicked bee inside the house stung my wife, my son, and a cat, and as I'm walking up from outside, my wife steps out and says, "watch out for the..." and I see a dot coming straight for me like a 3-D cartoon, and *wham* the little creep stings me in the forehead. Lucky by that time he was apparently pretty much out of venom. Some bees don't lose their stingers, apparently.
Aren't you glad you asked? Oh, you didn't?

For whatever reason the SCOTUS will not hear 2nd amendment cases out of NJ.
There have been several cases arising in NJ and the court has refused to hear them. The latest one just this week.
I find it ironic that Christies only pardons have involved people trapped by overzealous prosecutors applying NJs insane gun laws.
In addition to pardoning why doesn't the fat man propose to change these laws?

Unless GM really changed something big-time in the 'Vette this dude was in, I'm not buyin' the story.
In virtually every car I've ever driven -- and that's a pretty big number -- if one pulls on the inside door handle, it overrides the lock mechanism and the door opens. That's not rocket surgery.
Moreover, the story claims dude went in to get his coffee around 0800 and went back out to check on his dog at 1100? This time of year in Beaumont? The poor pooch was probably toast anyway by then.
