The problem was that Byers was actually honest about this, and NYT expected him to get in line.
I can look down my block and see half a dozen cars that are more expensive than Rubio's boat, two houses that I know own motorhomes worth more than his boat, at least one neighbor wtih a boat bigger than his, and I live in the relative cheap-seats of the SF bay area. We're talking seriously middle-class stuff, and thankfully not everyone buys the NYT's perspective that everyone ought to be paying $2500 a month in rent and limiting their transportation to the subway and their recreation to a mountain bike. I've been meaning to write something up on 'defining middle-class down' but as I don't have a blog I never really get around to it...
When I was growing up my family doctor - drove an older Buick, lived somewhere one tier up from where we did - owned a Piper Comanche. Think it was a 180 but have no idea now, wasn't a twin. Anyway, this was very much the kind of thing that you aspired to as a dirty-white-collar kid, it wasn't a plutocrat thing, it was just a tier or two up from where you were. A friend in high school, her father was a shop teacher at another school, he owned a boat about the size of Marco's. Had one Chevy (Mercury) inboard, not two big-ass outboards, but once again I'd go out on the boat with them, it was a middle-class sort of recreational activity and they were far from rich. I get the feeling that these NYT reporters simply do not understand how people live, or at least want to live, outside their own little Sandinist Paradise. Am currently trapped in a hotel on business. In the hotel sports bar CNN intoned about "two different narratives" about a "pool fight" in McKinney Texas, in which one girl was interviewed about when "one boy went to help" the girl being arrested and then when "another boy went to help her" the police overreacted.
Look I don't know about whether the cops actions were appropriate or not but this was no "pool fight" but clearly a significant, dangerous, out of control mob, and you don't "go to help someone" being arrested as much as you are (or will surely be perceived) as trying to interfere with the arrest --particularly when multiple people try to "help" in the arrest process in the middle of a melee. To be sure no point was lost the next story was about the disgraceful shooting in South Carolina, which of course has zero to do with teens rioting in Texas and exactly how a cop is supposed to protect property in a group of rioting teens without touching anybody. The next story was about two white convicts (pictures duly shown) in a recent prison escape, which I'm sure was entirely coincidental to the flow of news. The next story was some legislative hack being interviewed by a CNN "journalist" about the disgraceful lack of competence by the TSA, from which point the "interviewer" immediately began several questions on whether this has anything to do with "budget constraints" and "those who are asking for security without resources, etc." Oh, and this AM I got USA Today delivered to my door. Headline: "Obama [our fearless Leader] Targets Russia at G-7" Excuse me but when was it written into law that every hotel and airport must constantly dispense and only dispense prog propaganda? The Times should maybe send a reporter to Florida. They'll find that it looks a little different from Manhattan, and that houses with pools and people with small boats are pretty damn common.
Curious how the Times showed no interest at all in the free-spending Obamas, who lived paycheck-to-paycheck in Chicago, despite both pulling down big salaries (Michelle's was purely a make-work, political patronage job too -- the type of insider crony deal that would outrage the Times if it was a Republican wife doing it). The Obamas also bought themselves a big house in Chicago, but they didn't have the money for it (because they'd never bothered to save), and had to rely on the generosity of a big donor (Tony Rezko) who was also a well-known crook. (More stuff that would have been front page, screaming headline scandals if Republicans had been doing it). Posted by: TrivialPursuer at June 09, 2015 05:52 PM (o8Gus) 113

Well Bill Clinton would not be caught dead on Rubios "luxury boat". There's no toilet on it; there's no little cubby hole bunk up front where ol Billy Jeff could snort blow off the firm hard belly of a 16 year old girl. Nope this is not a luxury boat for Billy Jeff.
Now in some sympathy to the New York Times twit who wrote that piece of junk. Housing costs in New York (and in Los Angeles where I live) distort one's view of what real life is like out in the red states. I live in what I describe as a $35,000 tract house. That's because what a new house like it would have cost in a middle class San Diego suburb in 1968 when I got out of grad school. 1,900 square feet. three bedrooms two baths and a two car attached garage. I bought it new in 1974 for $75K. I've put in a backyard pool and landscaped the place---and could probably sell it today for $800,000 or a bit more. I could probably buy an equivalent property someplace 50 miles outside of downtown Manhattan for the same price. But if I take that $800,000 down to Houston or Dallas I could double the size of the house, and maybe have a four car garage and a casita--where ignorant New York Times reporters could come goggle at my "mansion". These twinkies living in their hoveled apartments near the Hudson just don't have a frickin' clue as to what's available outside their miserable liberalsphere. No, the Dims and their allies aren't running a Quadrupel Secret Ten Dimensional Scam to fool us into nominating Rubio.
The Dims learned well with Obama. They know there is zero reason to enact their policies. There is zero justification because they don't work in the real world. We already know what works and that is free-market capitalism. However - what they want is easy money and power and Obama has shown them the way. They will run endless "First Evah (fill in the blank) Presidents" the Republicans are too pussified to say boo to a 1st Evah. So, next in line is The Ladies. Then I guess Hispanics (Hello, Castro Bros!) Then, eh, who knows Asian, gays, whatever...on and on. Rubio, or better yet, Cruz screws up their game plan. And President Cruz(or Rubio) with VP Fiorina really screws up their battle plans. It's nothing more than that....really. Their ideas are nonsense but worse old and olde fashioned- all they've got is division, the FSA, the LIVs, the SJW and group-on-group envy and hatred. The Dims want to preserve that. I can look down my block and see half a dozen cars that are more expensive than Rubio's boat, two houses that I know own motorhomes worth more than his boat, at least one neighbor wtih a boat bigger than his, and I live in the relative cheap-seats of the SF bay area.
I don't want to go Mr. Moo-Moo on everyone, but a 24-foot boat in my middle-class Texas neighborhood is nothing more than a comfortably-sized bass boat. And, yeah, my wife's car cost more than Rubio's speedboat, and we paid cash for it, like I have for every car that I've ever bought. I'm a cheapskate and have a crappy old car. to Maetenloch I am Ira Wetheral My Disturbance of some ONTs is directly in response to Cooth's INSISTENCE that I am responsible for his IT misfortune, luap nor AKA Tim in Illinois was also called out and harassed, but seemingly didn't get the ban hammer because he did the 'turn the other cheek maneuver' which is cool. I scream back at cooth, unperson, and a growing band of yahoos who seem to be swayed by his... Magnificence. Buzzion fell into this as well as bebe. The main point I want to make here, there is not and never will be any "evidence" pointing toward implicating me. One night he got a bug up his ass, and never quit. He is the sphincter in this case. My belief, is while his fiancee was out of town, He stumbled into some bad shit on a porn site. Maybe not, but he sure didn't get it from me. Now my pal Mr Hat has been given over to the dark side. Do I really have to wait for an apology from cooth? When will his expensive "investigator" finger the culprit, if ever? Late at night, all I have ever done was some silly back and forth you-tube music videos with hat and piercello. No fun anymore. I don't see a resolution to this in the near future But if you can, I'm amenable. Seriously, Ira Posted by: El Dorado at June 10, 2015 05:50 AM (HNB4q) 427

Just like the rubber bullets (foam earplugs) query at Ferguson, I expected to see a Twitter pic of a dinghy with some reporter asking the internets: "I believe this is a luxury speedboat. Can anyone confirm?"

My guess is that Carlos Slim is playing a layered game here. These B.S. stories accomplish two things, and one is galvanizing the Republican base around Rubio through silly and transparent attacks by the paper the right most loves to hate (of course, it makes lefties happy, and they're not going to question motives. Ever.). My guess is that if there is going to be a Republican president, as unlikely as that may be, the power-players on immigration would rather it be Rubio. That's not a good thing.

Rubio's home could fit in Thomas Freidman's garage
