New York Times: We Didn't Get the Story From American Bridge; We Found It Ourselves and Pulled the Record with a Document Retrieval Service
Free Beacon: That's Funny, There's No Record of a Document Retrieval Service Pulling Records

Either the Free Beacon is wrong, or the New York Times is flat-out lying in order to hide the fact that American Bridge -- David Brock's Hillary PAC -- is behind their smear against Hillary's likeliest opponent's wife.

Now, if the New York Times used a "document retrieval service," surely it can cough up records of this electronic exchange.

Dylan Byers at politico says he will offer more information about this "document retrieval service" when the New York Times provides it to him.

So far-- nothing.

Brent Schrer provides his own update, though:

If the Times is found to have deliberately lied to cover up liberal bias -- this is going to be huge.

A much, much bigger story than Rubio's four traffic tickets.

One, Rubio is now the "likeliest" GOP nominee? So the US really is over, ace? Not one to over-emphasize the importance of individual politicians, but Rubio would have little chance of making critical improvements.

Second, the NYT caught openly lying about a simple factual matter central to a "story" would be "huge"?

In whose universe would it even matter? Those smart enough to not take the NYT seriously (for the most part - select reporters can be read with those possessing their own solid background in the given topic, there are some facts coming to light that way, but it's a small sub-set of the paper) will scream "dog bites mans?". The coastal-urban clueless/NPR listeners/high "education" low-comprehension types won't let it affect them. ...here's the problem: something happened to her in college. And I don't mean rape, or at least not rape-rape.

Based on JJ's little profile of her this AM it sounds to me like she was, through high school, about what you'd expect from her parentage - so you've got the GPA, the academics, the extracurriculars, I wouldn't be surprised if her parents - at least Mom - was a helicopter parent flying NOE with night-vision equipment and a full missile loadout.

And then she gets to college, maybe she'd already started to push back before that but she gets to college and the parental pressure's now at a distance, and she's got boys and whiskey and suddenly she's Miley Cyrus, but every now and then she's got a serious guilt attack.

You don't have to imagine. They could have put their resources behind investigations like this:

http://www.zombietime.com/obama_and_the_weather_underground/

That report was put together put one "blogger" (me) in six days.

Imagine what could have been dug up with the entire resources of a place like the NY Times, working for, say, three months.

Mind-boggling.

The amount of "dirt" on Obama is so vast, yet so unexplored to this day, that one is left speechless.

Also - was everyone here in a coma from 2003 to 2015? The absurd, Stalin-era type press campaigns against Bush were pretty much the same thing. (just finishing up re-reading the Great Terror by Conquest and I'd forgotten how much agit-prop lynch-mob publicity accompanied the purges - the analogy above, "Stalin-era type campaigns" is still of course over-drawn in terms of details but in context, this having been the US at one point, it's fitting).

Anyway...he was pretty much singlehandedly responsible for keeping the CHP from getting radar for a decade and a half, in part because - kind of a Biden-and-Amtrak thing - he had some family issues back in the Bay Area and routinely did the SF-Sacramento commute at Autobahn speeds.

Was a great loss to the drivers of the state of California when he left office.

166 Grump, I see variations on your comment all the time. To summarize: w/ the GOP back in the WH, *at least* some investigative function will be revived in the media, compared to the astonishing sort of police-state type PR service it has become.

WTF? Go back all the way in US history to, uh, 2008. Find an important story/problem/scandal assoc. w/ the GOP that was real, and important. Scooter Libby? Fired US attorneys? Katrina? Financial crisis? The anti-Bush elements of each "story" - or in several cases the ENTIRE "story" - were nonsense.

Or worse, as with the $$$$ crisis, the entire and direct cause (moral hazard/fed intervention in financial markets/Fannie Mae as corrupt social engineering and Dem Beltway insider racket disaster) was COMPLETELY ignored. So much so that when, years later, the NYT $$$ reporter did a book basically explaining what intelligent observers were saying literally at the time, it was"revelation" and "unconventional" take (admittedly it was risky in the stalinist inverted factual universe of the NYT for that reporter, but that underlines my point).

The press is essentially an extension of the most fascist, racist, corporatist, anti-American elements of the Dem Party and the sick alternate universe civic culture suffusing academia, pop culture, etc. They don't do "investigative" in the sense you mean. Small, occasional exceptions aside.

ot TGIF fun with words

someone wrote this on a wine forum about a bottle of wine I was going to open earlier

Rosewood color with violet rim. Multilayered nose of beef blood, seasoning salt and mint. The palate on this is more linear and restrained than the expansive 2010, making the wine less immediately accessible. However, the strong tannic support combined with the intriguing density of the nose makes me believe this will be a future standout.

it was a gift

one of a set of bottles we received as a gift upon our return from Spain recently (both Spanish wines)

I think I'll let it sit a few more years.

206 Yes, Ken, and I'd thought of that as appropriate context to add more "WTF?" to this fantasy that any level of press misconduct would ever matter.

The NYT pushes a comically implausible smear story on a presidential candidate, while also denying him space on their op-ed pages (an historically astonishing thing in itself, for those whose history of our political culture goes back past the 90s).

Tragically this will not sink Rubio. It also, regardless of where it goes, have no material effect on the NYT or any other outfit formerly known as "the press".

234 We're over 100 comments so OT:

Our congress critters must be getting a lot of heat over the trade deal.

I've emailed him MANY time over the years and this is the first time I've gotten a response.

I asked him very specific questions.

1) Have you read the trade bill in part or in full
2) How do you plan to vote
3) Will your constituents be able to read the bill before its voted on.

Check out his response and count how many things that are wrong with his response.

Dear Mr. xxxx:

Thank you for contacting me to express your concern about current negotiations for a Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade pact. I appreciate having the benefits of your views.

As you may know, the Obama Administration is currently negotiating a free trade agreement known as the TPP with eleven other nations: New Zealand, Canada, Chile, Singapore, Brunei, Australia, Peru, Vietnam, Malaysia, Mexico and Japan.

These negotiations are ongoing and are led by our U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), Ambassador Michael Froman, who was appointed by the President.

Recently, Rep. Paul Ryan (WI), Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee has introduced H.R. 1890, the Bipartisan Congressional Trade Priorities and Accountability Act. This bipartisan, bicameral legislation will increase Congressional oversight and bring more transparency to the process. In addition, this bill will give the Administration over 150 negotiating objectives, from reducing currency manipulation to protecting intellectual property, which must be included in any trade deal.

Finally, if signed into law, this legislation affirms that Congress must ratify any trade agreement before it can take force. On April 23, the House Ways and Means Committee approved H.R. 1890 by a vote of 25 to 13.

Please know that I will keep your concerns in mind as Congress continues to work on these important issues.

Again, thank you for contacting me.

Sincerely,

Rodney Frelinghuysen
Member of Congress

The lie may not be shouted from the rooftop, but it is still widely known. And they know that. And knowing that makes me smile.

293 If the Times is found to have deliberately lied to cover up liberal bias -- this is going to be huge.

You're kidding, right?

When has liberal bias ever led to anything bad for these people?

You seem to think the Left has principles that they abide by. They do not.

317 Obama Pays Parking Tickets 17 Years Late

The Associated Press
Thursday, March 8, 2007; 9:27 PM
BOSTON -- Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama got more than an education when he attended Harvard Law School in the late 1980s. He also got a healthy stack of parking tickets, most of which he never paid.

The Illinois Senator shelled out $375 in January _ two weeks before he officially launched his presidential campaign _ to finally pay for 15 outstanding parking tickets and their associated late fees.
