Again: Department of Justice Awards $585,719 Grant to University to Study "Far Right Extremism" on the Internet

Terrorist threats must be excused away, apologized for, and tolerated, except the one hypothetical kind.

The Department of Justice is concentrating on "far-right" groups in a new study of social media usage aimed at combatting violent extremism.

The Justice Department’s National Institute of Justice (NIJ) awarded Michigan State University $585,719 for the study, which was praised by Eric Holder, the former attorney general, earlier this year.

"There is currently limited knowledge of the role of technology and computer mediated communications (CMCs), such as Facebook and Twitter, in the dissemination of messages that promote extremist agendas and radicalize individuals to violence," according to the NIJ grant. "The proposed study will address this gap through a series of qualitative and quantitative analyses of posts from various forms of CMC used by members of both the far-right and Islamic extremist movements."

The study draws more upon right-wing forums than upon the corners of the web inhabited by Islamist extremists.

"We will collect posts made in four active forums used by members of the far-right and three from the Islamic Extremist community, as well as posts made in Facebook, LiveJournal, Twitter, YouTube, and Pastebin accounts used by members of each movement," the grant said.

They should use that money to begin investigating British GQ, which recently did an interview with right-wing extremist Vince Vaughn.

On the American right to own a gun:

"I support people having a gun in public full stop, not just in your home. We don't have the right to bear arms because of burglars; we have the right to bear arms to resist the supreme power of a corrupt and abusive government. It's not about duck hunting; it's about the ability of the individual. It's the same reason we have freedom of speech. It's well known that the greatest defence against an intruder is the sound of a gun hammer being pulled back. All these gun shootings that have gone down in America since 1950, only one or maybe two have happened in non-gun-free zones. Take mass shootings. They've only happened in places that don't allow guns. These people are sick in the head and are going to kill innocent people. They are looking to slaughter defenceless human beings. They do not want confrontation. In all of our schools it is illegal to have guns on campus, so again and again these guys go and shoot up these f***ing schools because they know there are no guns there. They are monsters killing six-year-olds."

On whether guns should be allowed in schools:

"Of course. You think the politicians that run my country and your country don't have guns in the schools their kids go to? They do. And we should be allowed the same rights. Banning guns is like banning forks in an attempt to stop making people fat. Taking away guns, taking away drugs, the booze, it won't rid the world of criminality."

A movie critic and alleged writer greeted this interview the only way they know how:

Stunningly stupid?

Naturally. Because you don't want those dang Lutherans pulling off a surprise domestic terror attack or something. They also don't have advocates nestled into the federal government like Mohammed Elibiary ensuring that their "civil rights" aren't violated by profiling or unfair bias against their religion.

I'd like to ask anyone on the so-called Left to identify the extremists on their side.

There is no right and left. It's a false paradigm. You either believe in liberty and limited government as espoused by the Framers and the Scottish Enlightenment or you believe in an all powerful state that controls your life to a lesser or greater extent.

One or the other. Liberty or tyranny.

Well, I suspect that what Obama really means is something different than what those words mean to me.

In Obama's universe right wing extremists could easily describe the Rotary Club, or the Lions Club, or a host of other social clubs that are white, christian, and conservative.

12 That said, I give Vince Vaughn's comments the same weight I give Rosie O'Donnell's: next to none. I don't seek, nor do I care what these dancing monkeys think about my rights.

I pay your organ grinder a nickel to watch you dance. When your dance is over, get back in your box. When I want to see another dance, I'll pay another nickel. I don't give a damn what you think.

It is nice to see the occasional celebrity with the guts to stand up for rights, but still....

But what does teh gubmint say?

Nothing.

Or, more often than not, they dismiss them as "mostly peaceful."

Bull to the shit.

But no. Leftwing anarchist cults and black power groups and Communist hardliners are totes legit, folks. Destroying public and private property while wearing Guy Fawkes masks and screaming "FUCK THE POLICE! EAT THE RICH! KILL ALL MEN! DIE, HONKY!" is just their way of exercising their freedom of speech rights.

They have proven incompetent when faced by professional opposition.

'Right Wing' US Extremists, being Conservatives, are the very definition of Competent... and if it really hits the fan... ARE an existential threat to the Professional Political Class which this Government now protects...

ergo.... DHS and DOJ will focus on the real threat.

All of that changed starting in the '60s, and ahs now accelerated to the point where expressing extreme "progressivism" is not only commonplace but de rigueur in Hollywood.

That's why it a good thing that people like Vince Vaughn come out of the closet to help break the leftist monopoly on Hollywood opinions. The more who come out, the more the monopoly is broken, freeing more and more to come out. The floodgates will open.

303 So how *does* one reply to something "stunningly stupid?" Sometimes that's really the only explanation to things idiot leftists (BIRM) say.

I'm of the opinion that the reason they hold these "opinions" they are told they must hold is that they are truly stupid, but the dems have told them for so long they are sooooo smart for believing what they are told to believe.

It must be pretty wonderful to be mind-numbingly stupid and have such a powerful group tell you how smart you are. I do have to hand it to the dems; they have put together quite the army of drooling buffoons who will never turn on them. I'm not really interested in changing their little pea-brains (couldn't anyway), but... they're stupid. What's the best reply?

What else could they spend that money studying? How about the percentage of violent crime committed by illegal aliens? How about the percentage of American Muslims that believe in free speech? Maybe some studies on the rates of actual illegal voters, say by cross indexing registered voters with people refusing jury duty because they are non-citizens?

I always think it funny how money gets spent studying things that are not terrible relevant or important. I mean, the role that facebook and twitter have in disseminating "extremist" messages? Same role they have spreading all messages.

Our real issue as a country is with the parole and work release system. Last year, we had multiple prisoners escaping while on work duty. Like three in a three weeks. Some of them murderers.

And any crime less than murder or drugs means you're not likely to do any time at all, so we have all these recidivists on the streets, breaking into people's houses and escalating their crimes to another level. It's a mess.

But what do these 'activists' want to talk about? Too many black criminals in jail.

My impression is that his job is not to be conservative himself, but to study conservatives and present their position not as a valid philosophy, but as a study in aberrant human behavior. Sort of like an anthropological analysis of the primitive world of conservatives.

Much like David Brooks is a **wink/nod** "conservative" commentator, intended to present the conservative viewpoint for the bemusement of the "intelligentsia".
