Say, is anyone else thinking about taking, oh, about a three month fishing vacation this summer? You know, to get out of a town one lives in that just might be nuked by Vlad, given how ably our JEF's diplomatic help has handled the situation?

I've been saying for a long time that as soon as Russia, China, Islamoloonz, North Korea, etc-

figure out just how personally weak, just how ideologically blinded and just how much Obama hates, hates to the core of his being, the United States of America

they will then realize that this may be the only time where they can achieve their nationalistic goals nearly cost free in terms of US military opposition.

They still just can't quite believe a President would throw away all the hard fought gains made in blood and treasure by the US, but-

Yup! Iraq and the rest of the Middle East clown show is the proof.

And Obama made a speak a few years ago - detailing the idea that if we were hit by a nuclear bomb, we wouldn't retaliate because, and I quote-

"we could absorb an attack."

So....we got that working for us.

History is calling, bitchez.

192 A man moved from Ohio to Texas as a child. In the '20s, he married a local girl and opened a General Store. He started the local Chamber of Commerce. When the Depression hit, he was openhanded with his neighbors, granting credit to the hungry. During the War he organized the scrap drives and sold war bonds. In his 50's, he served on the local schoolboard. Though never rich, he was generous to a fault. When he finally passed away in the '90s, his friends all chipped in to buy a monument for his grave that was worthy of him. His epitaph read 'He was almost one of us'.

It was interesting yesterday, hearing the FIFA corruption case, and the Clinton Foundation mentioned in the same breath. Apparently there was cash sent their way by the good slaveholders in Qatar.

I was wondering why Loretta Lynch's name keeps popping up with this investigation, but then somebody mentioned the Olympic bribing process, and I started connecting dots. The Obamas are still pissed over Chicago losing the bid for the Olympics, and now people are going to pay. I wanted to take my husband out to see where I grew up, but figured crossing Rabbit Ears would be bad for a Texan who'd never seen real snow, so we just went to Breckinridge instead since it's right off the highway without any scary passes.

Then our GPS sent us up Loveland Pass. At night. In a Charger of all things. We got to A basin and turned around since I didn't know what the other side looked like.

Husband did well though so perhaps next time we'll venture further out west.

I asked my Brother about it and he said it was Mount Hood, a famous known landmark for Portland. Every other time I was in Portland it was either too overcast or too foggy to see Mount Hood. In fact at the time that I saw the mountain, people in Portland were complaining about the horrible heat (maybe 85 degrees) and the blazing sun.

Sunny and 70, very little wind. You could see Mount Baker, another Volcano in the Northern Cascades, from our hotel room. That's 60+ miles away! The locals said they only get to see that far a few days a year.

"This
is Edward "Ed" Mezvinsky, born January 17, 1937. "Who
is Ed Mezvinsky?" you say.

Well,
he is a former Democrat congressman who representedIowa's
1st congressional district in the United States House of
Representatives for two terms, from 1973 to 1977.

He
sat on the House Judiciary Committee that decidedthe
fate of Richard Nixon. He
was outspoken, saying that Nixon was a crook and a disgrace to politics
and the nation and should be impeached.

He
and the Clintons were friends and very politically intertwined
for many years.

Ed
Mezvinsky had an affair with NBC News reporter Marjorie Sue Margolies
and later married her after his wife divorced him. In
1993, Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky, then a freshman Democrat in Congress,
cast the deciding vote that got President Bill Clinton's controversial
tax package through the House of Representatives.

In March 2001, Mezvinsky was indicted and later pleaded guilty to
31 of 69 counts of bank fraud, mail fraud, and wire fraud. Ed
Mezvinsky embezzled more than $10 million dollars from people via
both a Ponzi scheme and the notorious Nigerian e-mail scams.

He
was found guilty and sentenced to 80 months in federal prison. After
serving less than five years in federal prison, he was released in April
2008 and remains on federal probation. To
this day, he still owes $9.4 million in restitution to his victims.

About
now you are saying, "So what?"

Well,
this is Marc and Chelsea Mezvinsky. [photo]

That's
right; Ed Mezvinsky is Chelsea Clinton's father-in law.

Now
Marc and Chelsea are in their early thirties and purchased a
10.5 million dollar NYC apartment (after being married in George Soros'
mansion).

Has
anyone heard mention of any of this in any of the media?

347 "Economists, however, caution against reading too much into the slump in output. They argue the GDP figure for the first quarter was held down by a confluence of temporary factors"

Well, there's one "temporary factor" in particular that is suppressing economic growth, one which will be in effect for only about another twenty months or so. It should let up as of late January of 2017.

That said, here's the obligatory periodic reminder that the Obama crew fiddled with the GDP figures starting around the end of 2013.

Since Obamanomics was failing to produce tangible economic growth, they mashed a big fat thumb down on the scales in Obama's favor by artifically overweighting "intangibles" in the calculations. Adding roughly 2% to GDP with handwaving and rabbits pulled from hats.

So when you see a GDP print reported by the feds these days, mentally subtract 2% from it to get the actual figure as it had been previously totted up.

Anyway, the Mezvinsky stuff lines up pretty well with my understanding of the matter.

Add to which that the younger Mezvinsky is the head honcho of a hedge fund that consistently loses money, but which always seems to have fresh new investors lining up at the front door regardless of its prior poor performance.

Almost as though certain investors are willing to lose money to curry favor with a certain politically prominent family. But that's crazy conspiracy talk. Tighten down that tinfoil hat before it blows away.

But it is weird how such a small part of the US's landmass (cities) dictate how everyone in the hinterlands must live and we think that's fair.

Wasn't there some issue about apportionment with congresscritters back in the day, where the rural areas wanted reps weighted toward landmass in the state and not necessarily toward the cities? And someone smacked that down. Something about "you represent people, not trees"?

They design commonly broken things to be difficult to replace.

I had a Chevy Malibu that you had to put up on a lift to change the spark plugs and even then the two reap spark plugs were too much trouble to change so they usually never actually changed them, although they always charged me for doing it. When I finally replaces the two rear spark plugs, one clogged with carbon so that it never sparked and the other had the electrode burned off so that it did not spark either. When I first started the car off with all eight cylinders firing, it blew dark black smoke out the tailpipe for about a minute as years worth of carbon accumulation burned off.

I really think conservatives should boycott all Big 3 companies because of the UAW. You're basically handing money to left-wing causes when you buy their products.

Even if you have no political angle, Big 3 products are garbage compared to their Japanese counterparts.

If you ever want to hear an interesting podcast, "This American Life" had an excellent story about the NUMMI plant that Toyota took over in the mid 80's from GM and created a partnership. I was amazed how honest it was despite NPR being in the tank for most leftist causes.

You'll never buy a GM product again after hearing it.

There are a couple of things where ZH have been on the ball.

-- Skepticism about Greece and the eurozone more generally

-- Observing the underreported "stealth inflation" which the Fed have produced via QE

By "ignition problem" they mean 200 pounds of shit on your key chain can cause the key to turn while the vehicle is in motion.

Which sounds more like a "driver problem" then GMs fault.

And if your car does die on the highway, just pop that bitch in to neutral and coast to the shoulder.

No biggy. I had a car that used to love to die on the highway. Luckily it was a stick, so I could pop the clutch, but... driving without power steering and ABS wasn't a big deal at highway speeds.

"If you ever want to hear an interesting podcast, 'This American Life' had an excellent story about the NUMMI plant that Toyota took over in the mid 80's from GM and created a partnership."

Since that's here in the SF Bay Area, in Fremont, I followed the story closely when it was later announced that the partnership was ending and GM was not going to re-up its participation. A bellwether moment for California manufacturing.

The funniest part was the plaintive overtures from the UAW local to Toyota to take over sole ownership and operation of the plant after GM announced they were bailing out. Despite the plant losing two hundred million buckaroos every year.

461 @448 - actually, EVERY car now has a pile of sensors everywhere, and in the powertrain it's pretty much required by law - the on-board diagnostic requirements are such that it's got to be able to identify a failing sensor as well as any other emissions-related faults, so you've got all kinds of control strategies for using one sensor's measurements to monitor another.

It's just a question of how long they're going to last, and some automakers are much better than others.

Today I drop the transmission out of one of our BMWs. 200K miles, so can't really complain. Need to make some tools to complete the overhaul (press jigs to squeeze the clutch packs down to get the snap-rings out) but the parts cost ought to be around $650 including a rebuilt valve body (no way no how gonna open that thing up.)

472 @465 - I'm not saying that CAN'T happen, but I will say that SHOULDN'T happen.

It's nice that modern cars will report all this diagnostic shit to you (I wouldn't be surprised if some were able to tell you whether the driver ate too many beans last night) on the OBD if you have the right software, but it shouldn't set the MIL for something non-powertrain-related.

Posted by: The Devoceleraptor at May 29, 2015 12:09 PM (o+SC1)

473 "actually, EVERY car now has a pile of sensors everywhere"

In some ways I like that. It's convenient to be able to just look up an OBD-II code to help figure out some odd little misbehavior. Also, monitoring codes can be a useful pre-failure predictive strategy. Saves maintenance money.

What's infuriating is how manufacturers are locking down those systems to outsiders. So a vehicle has to be taken to an official dealership service bay with a specialized computer in order to read certain codes or to reset them. At exorbitant expense. Germans are particularly bad about this.

479 @469 - required by law. There's a vacuum pump and a bunch of valves that are supposed to check that the fuel system holds pressure pretty much every time you start the car. Loose cap means it's not sealed, ergo MIL on.

Of course, in a lot of cars (in my experience VW/Audi products are about the worst at this) it's those system-integrity vacuum pumps and valves that fail, not the actual system plumbing...

You probably know if you are low on coolant the temp sensor doesn't work. I'm surprised it didn't go into 'limp home' mode.

Most of this on board diagnostics just add complexity and another failure point.

Posted by: just saying at May 29, 2015 12:17 PM (wkuqO)

500 @485 - you think that TEMPERATURE GAUGE is actually CONNECTED to something on the ENGINE that makes it display an actual TEMPERATURE from a SENSOR?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHHHAAAAAAA!

Pretty much every temp gauge these days, I think even in cheap cars now, is driven by the engine control computer, and it lies to you. The engine temp can vary 30-40 degrees and the gauge will still read resolutely normal.

One thing to watch out for in "pre-owned" cars is that people will go into the instrument cluster and pull the bulbs behind the warning lights, or wrap them in black electrical tape, just to get the nuisance to go away.

Sometimes it is just a nuisance issue like a sensor with transients.

Other times, though, not having that warning light visible to be heeded will result in something very expensive getting replaced.

Posted by: just saying

Most of that is simply the advent of fuel injection where you can have a precise mixture of fuel to air.

In the days of carburetors, you had a richer mixture where gas mixed with motor oil and washed down the cylinder walls. Engines basically had a 100k miles service life. Engine overhaul shops are now few and far between.

But the upcoming technology the automakers though are being forced to undertake as a result of crazy CAFE laws are going to be a nightmare. Volvo just introduced a supercharged AND turbocharged 4 cylinder engine for their full size SUV. That kind of stuff is going to have to be the norm unless the law is changed. It might sound cool, but that car is basically going to be disposable outside of a warranty. Just too much technology for a consumer to service.

Posted by: McAdams at May 29, 2015 12:40 PM (vRHxQ)

558 Just like the tire pressure sensors.

Kind of nice to have.

But they wear out and cost $250 to replace. Oh, and if you want to put snow tires on a set of steel rims for the winter, either get used to the stupid light being on at all times or pay $1000 to get the sensors installed in all 4 wheels.

And again, can't pass inspection with the low tire pressure light on. So if the sensors break, gotta fix it if you want to stay street legal.

...Another federal mandate, by the way.

I don't remember ever seeing a "check engine" light that lit up for anything more troublesome than a minor emissions-system defect or a loose gas cap. Nothing that would cause thick smoke, horrible grinding noises or an engine that went terminally silent.

The closest thing was the oil-pressure light. Years ago, my ex-wife ignored one of those. She called me when I was at work, advising me the car had stalled in downtown traffic and the starter wouldn't even turn the engine over.

I soon learned Volvo engines were easy to rebuild, and used replacement crankshafts were plentiful. The machine shop could only turn it down so much.

Needless to say, a stern lecture about The Meaning of Red Lights soon followed.

589 @524 - it is intentionally non-informative.

Most 'check engine' indications are not particularly serious, but the regulators want you to think that a loose gas cap is a crisis because suddenly you're emitting vapors to the air.

As a general rule the serious, park-the-car-now stuff comes up on some other gauge or indicator, the 'check engine' light is a 'when I get to it' thing.

You can get decent OBD-II dongles that'll talk to smartphone apps via Bluetooth for a few bucks.

The manufacturer-specific diagnostic software that'll allow you to get more detailed codes and test/interrogate systems not covered by basic OBD-II codes is either (a) more expensive or (b) 'borrowed' via torrents and links from message boards.

597 Yeah, check engine light turns on for ANY obdII code.
It's confusing to some, but usually right there in the front of the manual is an explanation of the difference between red and yellow lights.

things were simpler when they had an idiot light, and if you didn't pull off and shut down, you're and idiot. Now you turn the ignition on and so many lights temporarily light up, you can't recognize them all.
Fortunately, if there's a problem, a light stays on.
Unfortunately, what they consider a problem and what I consider a problem are two different things.
Being a few pounds low on air pressure when it is zero outside is to be expected, and just conditions folks to ignore their warning lights.

625 OBDII is actually pretty consumer friendly for troubleshooting a car's problems.

I can understand why it's simply a "check engine" light because you'd otherwise have to have a 100 different idiot light that 99% of people wouldn't understand. The system before was incredibly arcane and there was no uniformity across manufacturers.

A code reader can be found for like $50, and the ones that attach to a smartphone can really do a lot for next to nothing if you want to go deeper.

A "cheat" you can do it your Check Engine light comes on for a catalytic converter is put a $3 "spacer" in between the O2 sensor and the catalytic converter rather than buying a whole new converter.

Someone said the other day that they remembered George W. Bush preparing America for a long war, in the aftermath of 9/11.

What's infuriating is that Bush, who was a staunch proponent of strict message discipline as a campaigner (remember the "catapult the propaganda" comment that lit up the left with indignation?) suddenly forgot all about that as an actual officeholder.

Instead of steady and regular warnings that jihadi terror wasn't going to be defeated in a few short years, instead we got an incoherent mix of MISSION ACCOMPLISHED and oh, wait, so sorry, not done quite yet, surge required.

Similarly with bin Laden, on the subject of whom Bush randomly wandered from Public Enemy Number One, wanted dead or alive, to "I don't really think about him very much. I'm not that concerned."

Posted by: OneEyedJack

Depends on your state.

My state just does a "scan" if your vehicle is post-1996, it doesn't hook it up to a sniffer. Most states are the same way, but I could see California being different.

If you have no check engine light, your vehicle is in emission compliance so you pass. That's why the OBD system was designed.

The spacer trick is only if the Check Engine light comes on for a bad catalytic converter.
