23 I'm with John Stossel in that I don't think 'blackmail' should be a crime unless keeping that info quiet is in itself a crime.

You should be able to sell your information to the person it's about if you obtained it legally. In fact , first refusal is the right thing to do. Isn't giving the person a chance to buy your silence better than just selling it to the enquirer?

She wasn't strictly all-Catholic-all-the-time back in the day. In fact, I think she used to be in charge of the website. Heck, she used to stand in on Bill Bennett's radio show.
But then everything became about novenas and St. Agatha of Doofenschmirtz, etc., so I stopped reading.

122 Bob's House, hilarious comment (Doofenschmertz). Agree, never did read K-Lo much, as it was (even then, not sure when this was) already pretty much Boring Inside Baseball for Catholics sorta stuff.

McCarthy of course can be very good on concrete terrorism stuff, having been directly involved and knowing first-hand (though he doesn't harp on it, apparently not suffering whatever stupid-classless disease afflicting all lefty commentators) the astonishing failure of the Clinton years and how these led directly to 9/11 and beyond.

One thing, those who still read NR might be able help: has McCarthy engaged on the whole Libby lynching thing, specifically revising his seemingly mindless and furious defense of his buddy the prosecutor? We didn't need the rather dubious reporter Miller's book to know the whole thing was ridiculous - enough info in the public domain to know there was no outing of clandestine personnel, and there was no clear picture on who might have shared info about the CIA dummy in question, or why, in any case. But McCarthy foamed at the mouth in such a doctrinaire way to defend his pal at the time, wondering if he has exhibited any remorse or enlightenment on this.

As Steve Sailer points out, blackmail is fine as long as you have a lawyer work it out for you. If whoever blackmailed Hasert had gone to a lawyer, the lawyer could have worked out the legal way to blackmail him. Of course lawyers don't call it that but that is what it is.

Note that many have seen how NR became far less interesting or serious in the last few years. Emphasizing how barren is the info/analytical landscape for the sane, realistic, analytically-inclined American citizen. Even NR is basically a goner.
