We are so utterly fncked: Robot builders at MIT have created a cyber-creature that can run and jump over objects without human control. The DARPA funded Cheetah is capable of jumping over walls more than half its own height and continuing to run as fast as 22 kilometers per hour (13MPH). The robot uses a Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) sensor in its nose to scan the road ahead, and measure the height of an obstacle and its distance within 100 milliseconds. Onboard software plants the two front paws close to the wall, pushes hard on those to bound over it, then pushes again powerfully from the front to bring the retracted rear legs over safely. www.theregister.co.uk/2015/05/29/robot_cheetah_video And then it rips open your skull and gleefully feasts on your still warm brain. Your delicious, delicious brain. Posted by: Laurie David's Cervix at May 29, 2015 10:28 PM (kdS6q) 105

I posted this in one of the morning threads. My husbands friend and band mate was killed yesterday in a head on collision. A SUV's tire blew out and crossed the highway. Dave was a great guy with a big heart and huge musical talent. He played bass for the original hellhounds in San Diego way back when. He was a Proud Vet. He was an Army Medic who served in Central America. He died transporting a patient in his medical transport van. The patient was also killed. I was worried Season 8 would not hold up after 7 years, but when you consider that the movies and Say Goodnight were just compressed seasons, they never really lost their stride. S8 has some interesting twists (Corey returns but not Trevor; T has more screen time than J-ROC; Ricky becomes a grandfather) and Talk-O the weed-eating swearing parrot is hilarious. The staples of the show (original insults, a grand caper, tension between Randy and Lahey) are there. It seems slow, so, time for my rant:
Reason #2793 Why I Hate people I decided to take the doggeh for a walk today. We went down the street, through the schoolyard (passed about sixty kids practicing baseball), back out of the the school, around the corner, etc. Almost a mile? Anyway, two blocks from home, we see a lady & her six-year old pulling weeds. The little stinker kept whining and wanting to cross the street (I don't hold his leash, he follows me wherever I go). Eventually, I realize that this little girl is staring at him, so I walked him over - "do you mind if he says hello to your daughter?" Of course!, she says. Little Samantha played with Tucker for thirty minutes... Turns out, the lady had lived in the house her grandfather built in 1955 for three years, and I'm the first neighbor that actually stopped and said hi. She hasn't even met the next door neighbors. Remember what it was like back when we were kids? In short, People suck. Our cat Daisy came to us 15 years ago on a cold, dark December night. Her people had moved and left her. So one night as my wife came home from here evening commute Daisy appeared and wound her way in and out of my wife's legs as she came up the walk. I was waiting for her as usual along with our lab Misty at the door. Daisy came in sat right down and proceeded to mash on Misty like they had been life long friends. She was a true waif, thin delicate and a beautiful long haired orange tabby with fine white hair like silk. We fed her a can of tuna and she stayed through multiple moves and dogs, always the Princess at the right hand of my Queen.
Last month she slowly began to fade, never sick and mischievous to a tolerable degree until then, her appetite faded and I knew she wanted to go. But we didn't, we fed her and gave her syringes of water which she resented more and more but we kept hoping she would bounce back. On Saturday my wife took her in for on last vet check, we almost let her go but couldn't. On Sunday we had a terrible accident picking her up to take her to her litter box, she growled, twisted out of our arms and hit her head on a chair, instantly she was in agony, meowing in pain and grasping for breath. We live 45 minutes from any emergency vet and I knew I had to do the most terrible thing I have ever done in my life, I covered her in a royal purple towel and as gently as I could I suffocated my baby until she was gone and no longer in pain. There is never a right time to send a furbabie on, but there is an appropriate time. We missed ours. Love them well, love them well as long as you can, but let them go when God tells you to. “No, father, its not for me to say,” Paddy replied. “Was it Siobán O’Reilly?” “No, father, I can’t tell you.” “Linda Mallory?” “No, father, it wouldn’t be right for me to mention any names.” With this the priest told him to sin no more and gave him penance. Shortly after moving to America Paddy Finnegan walked into a Boston pub and ordered three pints of Guinness. He sat drinking a sip out of each one in turn. The bartender said to him, “You know sir, a pint goes flat after I draw it; it would taste better if you bought one at a time.”
Paddy replied, “Well, you see, I have two brothers back in Ireland, Sean and Donovan that I used to drink with everyday. The day I left Ireland I made them a promise. I told them that even though we were hundreds of miles apart I’d have a drink with them every day. So I drinks one for each o’ me brothers and one for meself.” The bartender admitted that this was a nice custom, and left it at that. Paddy became a regular in the pub, and always drank the same way; he ordered three pints and drank them in turn. Until the day he entered the pub and ordered only two pints. All the other regulars took notice and fell silent. The bartender said, “I don’t want to intrude on your grief Paddy, but I want to offer my condolences on your great loss.” “What loss?” asked Paddy. To which the bartender replied, “You only ordered two drinks. Which one of your brothers died?” “Ach! Me brothers are fine!” replied Paddy. “It’s ME that’s out of sorts. I haven’t been feeling well lately so I’ve taken the pledge and quit drinking!” Posted by: Grump928(C) at May 29, 2015 11:10 PM (rwI+c) 281

Moderate Muslims exist, in large quantities, and the few I know are nice people. But we all have to hope that they never get serious about reading their version of the Bible. It has problems.
Posted by: Splunge I think there are good reasons to avoid encouraging manachaen lines by forcing everyone into one or another camp, especially in the US. Non-practicing Muslims are probably worth cultivating on the side of the West and lower-case 'd' democracy in general. The US' nature has cooled some of the more fervent aspects of religion in some sense; no pogroms here, at least in comparison to those of Europe, right? Should we in the US be allowed to confront and make pointed demonstrations of islam? Of course. Do we need to make enemies with every person raised in an muslim household? Not so sure. The Scotsman agrees that she sounds pretty thick, but says his wife is thicker. "Just last week, she went out and spent $17,000 on a new car," he laments, "and she doesn't even know how to drive!" Paddy was taking a walk in the country. In a field he noticed something that intrigued him. Why doesn't this cow have any horns?
He asked the local farmer. "Well sir, cattle can do damage with their horns so we usually keep them trimmed down with a hacksaw. You can also treat young calves so their horns never grow. And some breeds don't have any horns at all," the farmer replied. The farmer continued, "But this cow doesn't have any horns because it is a horse!" An Irishman, an Englishman and a Scotsman were doing construction work on scaffolding on the 20th floor of a building.
They were eating lunch and the Irishman said, "Corned beef and cabbage! If I get corned beef and cabbage one more time for lunch I'm going to jump off this building." The Englishman opened his lunch box and exclaimed, "Ham and English mustard again! If I get ham and mustard one more time I'm going to jump off, too." The Scotsman opened his lunch and said, "Haggis again. If I get a haggis sandwich one more time I'm jumping too." Next day the Irishman opens his lunch box, sees corned beef and cabbage and jumps to his death. The Englishman opens his lunch, sees ham and English mustard and jumps too. The Scotsman opens his lunch, sees the haggis and jumps to his death also. At the funeral the Englishman’s wife is weeping. She says, "If I'd known how really tired he was of ham and mustard I never would have given it to him again! The Scotsman’s wife also weeps and says, "I could have given him cheese! I didn't realise he hated haggis so much." Everyone turned and stared at the Irishman’s wife. "Hey, don't look at me" she said. Winston Churcill has the final word on Islam.
How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries, improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement, the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property, either as a child, a wife, or a concubine, must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men. Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities, but the influence of the religion paralyzes the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step, and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science, the science against which it (Islam) has vainly struggled, the civilization of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilization of ancient Rome. Code of conduct? What's that?
-- They have a "Code of Conduct" for commenting there. No swearing. Not even swearing using special characters (no F#*@! for example). You have to use [expletive]. No discussions of anything raunchy, even if it's part of the news. So, for example, the Bernie Sanders story -- not discussed at all over there. A bunch of other stuff. Now, that's fine. I have no problem following commenting rules, but they have some people over there who are heavily invested in enforcing the CoC. And there is a tremendous amount of infighting between factions. The other guy says "Ireland." The first drunk says "That's cool! I'm from Ireland too! Let's have a round for Ireland!" They both drink merrily. Then the first guy says "So where in Ireland are you from?" "Dublin." "Dublin? Awesome! I'm from Dublin too! Let's have another round for Dublin!" Once again, they both drink merrily. Then the first guy asks, "So where did you go to school?" "St. Mary's, class of '62" answers the other guy. "Incredible! I graduated in '62 from St. Mary's, too! Let's have a round for St. Mary's!" An Irish priest is driving down to New York and gets stopped for speeding in Connecticut. The state trooper smells alcohol on the priest's breath and then sees an empty wine bottle on the floor of the car.
He says, "Sir, have you been drinking?" "Just water," says the priest. The trooper says, "Then why do I smell wine?" The priest looks at the bottle and says, "Good Lord! He's done it again!" Posted by: Grump928(C) at May 29, 2015 11:48 PM (rwI+c) 368

Good evening, Horde.
I'm likely to be pretty much outta touch next week. Flying out Sunday to Seattle, for an Alaskan cruise. Ship has a cigar lounge, so I should survive, I think. Heavily armed neighbors will be keeping watch, and vet tech neighbor will tend to the cats. If perchance, I'm able to return with my weight in salmon, I'll consider it a week well spent. That said, it's a rotten time for a week away, what with the gold mine of damaged roofs in my market area. But, the tickets and fare were bought months ago, and are non refundable. So, a Morons gotta do what a Morons gotta do. Which in my case, will be smuggling two or three litres of bourbon on board. I've got a foolproof process for that, but can't divulge the secret, less Bob at NSA spills to the cruise line. I'll take lots of pictures for Teh Horde, of course! I occasionally check out Althouse and read the comments there. Althouse herself doesn't interest me, but she's managed somehow to attract regulars who are far more conservative and smarter than she is. It's rather amusing when her commenters set her straight and she gets snippy with them. I do give her credit for permitting it. But I'm sure she wishes she had a different leadership. But she supports Walker and so that makes her an automatic wingnut in the eyes of her fellow leftists. It doesn't matter how much she praises gay marriage or needles her readers in the comments section - I'm sure she's a pariah in Madison circles. Posted by: Donna &&&&&& V. Paddy got him a Guinness. He didn't like it, so he drank it himself. Next Paddy got him a Kilkenny, he didn't like that either, so Paddy drank that too. Finally, he thought he might like some Harp Lager? His son spat it out. So Paddy drank it. Then Paddy tought hmmm, maybe he'd like whiskey better dan beer - so we tried a Jameson's! Nope! In desperation, Paddy asked the barman for some rare Redbreast, Ireland's finest. He wouldn't even smell it. What could Paddy do but drink it! Posted by: Jinx ---------------- Meh. Ought to work. If you can use a lower shut-off pressure, it would save wear/tear on the pumps. Also, without any accumulator (tank) the pressure switch might drop in and out. The hose itself might provide enough buffering so that doesn't happen. OK, did they change a lot of stuff in the movies? Just curious.
... Not so much in the first two movies. There was a fair amount of change, but it's the kind of thing you expect when moving from a novel to a movie. I can't remember exactly what they all were, but I remember being jarred by several of them for Mocking Jay pt 1. I think Hollywood was offended by Susan Collins' artistic integrity. You can tell she meant the series as a slam against conservatism. In her mind, the evil Capitol was Republicans (I think she's even said as much in interviews). Her "good guys" were *supposed* to be Progressives. Except that by the time she got to that point, she realized that had flipped. The "Progressives" were the Capitol, and about the best she could do is make the people in District 13 "just as bad" by making them Fascists (and, therefore, in her mind, Conservatives). Except that didn't work *either* because they were very, very Socialist. To her credit, she let the story go where it logically was going to go. She didn't let the *political point* she wanted to make force the story; she left the political point on the cutting-room floor as it were. I don't think HWood liked that, though, and you can see it in the 3rd movie. District 13 is very militaristic, as it would have to be, but they seem to be avoiding some of the harder edges, so it's more clear that "they're the good guys." The books are much more ambiguous on that point. Posted by: AllenG (DedicatedTenther) - Not dead yet at May 30, 2015 12:52 AM (M1uf/) 488

You reminded me of something. When I went from DC back to Wisconsin for a visit, my mom bought me a bunch of fresh Polish sausage from a small family butcher store to take with me. Now, I've had smoked Polish sausage in other parts of the country, but I found it impossible to find fresh Polish sausage out East, so I appreciated it. However, she packed it, along with some dry ice, in a cheap plastic carry on bag. It's only an hour and a half flight, mom thought it would be fine. However, there was a delay at O'Hare and we sat on the runaway for 90 minutes. And the frozen sausage thawed out. Fresh Polish sausage has a lot of garlic and it wasn't long before the entire cabin reeked of garlic. The flight was packed and people were turning to each other and saying "What the hell is that smell?" Garlic Flight 387 finally made it to DC and boy was everyone happy to get off the plane. I cringed all the way home. I was afraid the sausage had spoiled but after all that bother I was damned if I was going to toss it. I grilled it for friends the next day. Then she drops this big nest on them and thousands of these pissed off wasps fly out and sting the other kids, who run away (or die) and then she climbs down, and all the wasps are gone?
It's just that in the space of a few minutes of movie, there so many different examples of logical inconsistencies that I was wondering if the books were any better, and that Hollywood had just ruined them like they did with Tom Clancy's books. Crepe soled shoes, if you've got 'em. They grip. Flattest, softest soles you can find, otherwise. And do this. DO THIS. Get an old cushion from an upholstered chair. Many of you have probably heard this before, but when I was a wee little tad growing up in the suburbs of LA, my mom was a professor of mathematics. And part of the game of academia is sucking-up to TPTB.....and one of the ugly bits of bullshit that department chairs were eager to hand out to ANYONE else was textbook review. Since math is a STEM field, my mom ended up on the textbook committee for STEM subjects.
So wherever we went, we had all these pending science textbooks floating around. They were bathroom reading, they were holding up the short-leg of the table, they were on the coffee table in front of the couch and there was a big stack on the dining room table. And you'd pick one up and idly flip through.... And, as it turns out, there in physics and chemistry there was ALWAYS a chapter titled something very like "phases of matter" -- and it was ALWAYS illustrated with these pictures of snowflakes about 3" across. But, growing up in Southern California, I had never seen actual snowflakes -- so when they had the shuriken scene in the intro to Kung-fu, I was, like, "Son-of-a-bitch!!!!" The image of three-inch, razor sharp, ninja-stars of ice haunted my nightmares for a good period, there. Posted by: cthulhu at May 30, 2015 01:42 AM (T1005) 539

Posted by: ConserativeMonster, Rabid Puppy at May 30, 2015 02:55 AM (+2//H) I have been looking to migrate to a better configuration with harder security for a number of years -- but always have had to break-off to mow the lawn. And, as I've ranted frequently, vendors and suppliers have OBVIOUSLY marched me backward from my avowed goals -- long-timers may remember my rants when I got a hot new router and found that the manufacturer wanted me to web-config it; or when Intuit wanted me to have a uniform web identity across my financial situation. Well, now things have been re-prioritized and reoriented. Instead of "patch the crap in place to move slowly to the promised land", it's "demo the old, build the new." The new may include LINUX, Windows, and iOS in appropriate corners, but it will be bolted down (as it is not today). Which leaves me in the "I am safer than yesterday, but not as safe as tomorrow" mode. Posted by: cthulhu at May 30, 2015 03:05 AM (T1005) 629

In the "good old days", Unix commands were kept short because many of the interfaces were literally on 110-baud Teletype machines.....and typing "ls" took a measurable time less than Microsoft's later "dir". "k3b", a program to burn discs, continues this tradition. But it leaves old-farts who have been out of the game for 20+ years a mite irritated. I know what's in there.....I just don't know what it's called.

"You reminded me of something. When I went from DC
back to Wisconsin for a visit, my mom bought me a bunch of fresh Polish sausage from a small family butcher store to take with me. They raved about how great it was. Nobody got sick, thank God. Posted by: Donna V. (brandishing ampersands) at May 30, 2015 12:57 AM (+XMAD)" Garlic is a wonderful spice that makes any food better. The only people who don't like it must be vampires. What are the chances that you would be on a plane full of vampires? Well, flying to DC, probably pretty good. Anyway, congratulations on surviving on an airplane full of vampires. You were probably saved by the garlic in the sausage. Posted by: Obnoxious A-Hole at May 30, 2015 07:19 AM (QHgTq) 691
