Matt Bai: Unlike in 2012, What America Really Needs Now is a Distant, Ultra-Wealthy Elite With a Sense of Noblesse Oblige

Charles Cooke discovers, get this, Matt Bai making a case for Hillary Clinton quite opposite to his former rhetoric about Mitt Romney.

Bai, quoted by Cooke, is responding to Bernie Sanders' (mild) attacks on Hillary Clinton as "not like us."

His headline?

Hillary Clinton's not like the rest of us? Good!

....

Senator Sanders made this comment while sitting in what CNBC described as a “bistro near the Capitol,” which doesn’t exactly sound like Applebee's, but you get the point: Clinton is out of touch with regular Americans because she doesn't buy used cars or stockpile CVS coupons or save up for Disneyland like the rest of us do. To which I would only ask: why on God’s earth would we want a president like us? . . .

If you're asking me to choose between the self-made man or woman with resentments and identity issues, on one hand, and some arrogant oligarch who serves no financial master and is compelled to seek office mostly by some patronizing sense of altruism on the other (Michael Bloomberg, New York’s former mayor, comes to mind), then I'll take out-of-touch every time, and so should you.

Well gee that's awfully funny because the American people could have elected such a man in 2012 but the Matt Bais of the world screamed about Car Elevators.

That is a Presidential statement.

She establishes air superiority over Dem Shill Mitchell.

She tells the reader a bunch of things the American press has not told the American public.

She hints she knows the King of Jordan better than Obama.

And she's smart enough not to get into predicting an end-game before she's had a chance to arrange the pieces on the board.

Fiorina was ejected from HP because she wasn't part of the old-boy engineering culture of the company, she was a marketing parvenu and a little hard-edged and there's a lot of Silicon Valley types who will know nothing about her but that history, but I'm really liking her campaign...

But I'm still a Scott Walker guy right now.

-----------------

People don't want another lifetime Washington politician who is almost 70 years old and spent most of those years feasting off taxpayers.

People like this deny themselves moments like the one you describe. They fill everything with distractions. They can't be alone for long. When they're alone they have the TV or radio blasting. Even then they're probably drinking to "relax" or "come down" or "take the edge off". They live the ultimate unexamined lives.

The problem is not so much someone successful in the private sector, which undoubtedly Mitt was/is. The problem is his view of government as the solution to our problems; not the cause of them.

That's why the GOP is nothing more than Democrat light. The only difference is that they believe that they can run the Leviathan better than the Dems because of their business experience.

192 Wait, wait

They're bitching about Rubio's cashing in of retirement assets to do whatever....

That is in, fact, how most americans live. It used to be called the "home equity loan."

(FWIW, the wife and I are realigning our funds as well, we may "cash out" a few orphaned IRA's and 401k's to deal with things like student loan debt. When you do the math it's a bright idea. Cash out in quotes because we're thinking of taking a loan against the 401k, which basically sidesteps the tax penalties unless we fail to make repayments. But those funds aren't doing anything, they've just been sitting with 0 contributions for a while because they're from old jobs. And I could roll them into an IRA but given the current interest rates... point is it's not as stupid a decision as people claim.)

Apples to rocks, but Rick Perry did that in his last governor's race several years ago. Basically he put out a (not unreasonable-sounding) demand of his opponent and said "Until you meet it: no debates." Guy wouldn't release whatever it was- no debates.

Now, again, that's comparing apples to rocks. Rick Perry could basically have been elected Governor as many times as he wanted. Any debate would only have helped his opponent.

We're actually doing a ton to bring our investments into order over the next few months. They are a mess.

Haven't finalized anything yet. But since we're young, and handing retirement plans via other investments, liquidating to pay off debt (which FWIW got locked in at 6.5% because, unlike what the idiot demcrats would have you believe with #dontdoublemyrate, used to be the standard rate of Stafford loans.)

Anyway, liquidating it might be the most viable option (but we may go another route.)
Benefit to the loan sitatuion is it's basically a form of refinancing, but the interest is paid back into the 401k.

As it goes I'm planning on 2 things not existing 1) Social security
2) the supposed "pension thing" my wife supposedly has. I assume the federal government will go broke long before either of those apply.
(Acutally there's a sort of "3" in there too, I assume my wife won't have anywhere to work in about 10 years.)

Its interesting that team HRC is worried enough about her wealth to be preparing to defend attacks in that quarter.

It must be that of all her many faults, they know that having actual money is the only one that will actually register as a negative with her base.

Criminal activity across the board? No problem.

Lying sack of shit? Required!

Atrophied female reproductive apparatus? Top of the short list!

Abundant personal financial resources? Evil.

Now, she is evil. But they don't think she's evil because of how she got the money, or Matt Bai would be struggling with both brain cells to spin the means by which she became fiduciarily enabled. The left just hates the rich, en masse, so that's her weak spot in the primary.

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at May 28, 2015 01:26 PM (Zu3d9)

Is this criticism or praise of Reagan? Because if it's praise it is misdirected as the federal government expanded quite dramatically under Reagan so he obviously did not know how to balance the budget nor did his appointees know how to do that. Now you can argue that because Congress was controlled by Democrats there wasn't much he could do. Which I think is largely accurate as we saw balanced budgets under Clinton when the GOP controlled the House. Reagan may have popularized the present conservative agenda but Gingrich had more of a role in actually putting it in place (however short-lived that turned out to be - thanks Dubya).

Made glorious summer by this daughter of Pork;

In the deep bosom of the ocean buried.

Now are our brows bound with victorious wreaths;

Our bruised arms hung up for monuments;

Our stern alarums chang'd to merry meetings,

Our dreadful marches to delightful measures.

Grim-visag'd war hath smooth'd his wrinkled front;

And now, instead of mounting barbed steeds

To fright the souls of fearful adversaries,

She capers nimbly in a lady's chamber

I've talked with some former Reagan people, two of them pretty high up, and they said that what it came down to was this: the absolute imperative to confront and roll back the Soviet Union.

It was the top priority of the Reagan team. And they understood, unlike Obama, that you can only have one "top priority" at any given time.

Achieving that goal required huge new expenditures, especially in light of Reagan having inherited Jimmy Carter's "hollow military".

And the Democrats on Capitol Hill refused to give Reagan funds for rearmament unless he quietly assented to business as usual on their profligate domestic spending.

Simple as that.

Liberals held American national security hostage in the crudest and cruelest way, just in order to keep their personal pork troughs brim-full.

How serious? They took the creme de la creme of the applicants for assembly jobs, and then found that they had to explicitly formally train the majority of them in how basic hand tools work. Which direction to turn a screwdriver.

It wouldn't be much different anywhere else in the country. And of course all of these people vote. Not only the creme de la creme.

I've been sending money to the Fiorina campaign. I like every move she's made so far. I like Jindal, too. And yes, in case you've noticed a pattern here, I also like the Chicago Cubs. Statistically speaking, the Cubs are bound to winthe World Series eventually.

410 Yes do you have any left handed hammers?

I used to ... but I lost them in a pile of pre-dug post holes I had behind the shed.

411 I can't believe CNN is more worried about IS than the fact there are twenty three companies making deodorant.

You have to cut Bernie some slack. His mother was killed in a horrible deodorant accident.

412 Reminds me of a boss who was on this "the power of 'and'" kick.
So instead of deciding which of two things to work on, A or B, apply the power of "and" and work on A *and* B.

Did the guy who said this actually believe his own bullshit?

413 tsrbike RE: Moore v. Regents

Which leads me to ask do we have ownership rights to our DNA? Say a great athlete. Could someone take cells, and do the magic stuff that turns them into stem cells, and clones the athlete. Who wouldn't want to be the mother of a great athlete, or Nobel Prize winning scientists.

415 Which leads me to ask do we have ownership rights to our DNA?

There was a story on Drudge a couple of weeks ago about (I think) a foreign country in Asia that was using DNA to create the faces of people guilty of some bullshit crime, littering I think. I think the idea was to shame the litterbugs by displaying their faces.

416 OMG! Rubio cashed in some 401K money for his kid's education and a fridgeadator? That Scalawag better have paid his pound of flesh to the gubmint for that.

417 It occurs to me the government the libs want is an awful like the one we threw out 239 years ago in a little tiff...

418 from #22

But I'm still a Scott Walker guy right now.

419 There are these stories... horrible stories about Russian immigrants to the U.S., going into a supermarket in New Jersey and then having a near nervous breakdown in the toilet paper aisle. You see, in Russia you went to the store .. they either had toilet paper or they didn't, but now they were faced with having to make s choice between dozens of different types of toilet paper.

420 This reminds me of the leftist "chickenhawk" charge: bad for Dole to use against Clinton, then ok for Kerry to use against GWB, then bad again for McCain to use against obama. Maybe the GOP are just on the wrong side of an alternating standard on rich people and veterans?
