2 The Chocolate Diet scam expose in the sidebar raises some interesting questions, but Gell-Mann Amnesia rules the day.

There's a dipwad in the comments of the article decrying the same kind of sloppy journalism and dishonest science about climate change, but only on the anti- side, because of the corruption of corporate money.

Apparently, corporate money is corrupting, but government money isn't.

The shocked aggressors cannot quite believe that their targets are suddenly serious and willing to punch back. Usually, the bullies foolishly press aggression, and war breaks out.

Which reminds me: I'm not sure why I thought of this this morning (it just kind of popped into my head): God is Pro 2nd Amendment.

Setting aside the "now go buy yourself a sword" thing just before Jesus was arrested, there's the fact that the Israelite army was a *citizen* army. Men of fighting age were called up, and (in many cases in the Bible) it is suggested they already had their own weapons.

This is especially true in the period of the Exodus and the Wandering, and then during the time of the Judges.

Just an interesting thought which occurred to me.

This is what has been worrying me. They get out of college with crushing debt, a terrible job market, and depressed wages due to immigration and H1B visas. How are they ever going to be able to afford to buy a house?

Basically, many of them will never achieve the American Dream. And if they can't afford to own property, they're less likely to respect others' property rights, and are ripe for socialist demagoguery.

One might almost suspect that this is being done on purpose.

Whoever the GOP nominee is will have to beat this theme like Todd Rundgren on a drum: The Democrat Party is the party of betrayal.

"I don't care if you don't like me. I don't care if you think I'm a knuckle-dragging cowboy. I don't care if you and all your elitist party hacks laugh at me behind my back. But hear me now and believe me later - if a Democrat takes over the office of President, he or she will abandon you, undermine you and make common cause with your worst enemies. And frankly, if you haven't figured out after eight years of the dog-eating crackhead who's currently infesting the Oval Office that a Democrat promise is worth jack shit, then, frankly, good riddance to you."

105 The JWF post on Hillary quoting Scriptures was funny. The only thing lacking was to quote S. Paul in Philippians chapter 1:

15 Some indeed preach Christ even from envy and strife, and some also from goodwill:
16 The former preach Christ from selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my chains;
17 but the latter out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel.
18 What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is preached; and in this I rejoice, yes, and will rejoice.

Excessive sugar consumption apparently contributes to the deforestation of the Amazon and causes climate change. It's therefore very important to stop eating sugar because to encourage sugar consumption is to contribute to the destruction of ecosystems and ultimately the planet.

155 Speaking of Liberals who don't understand basic reality...

I have to share this from one my lib brothers (the one in Education).

See he has a 5 year plan (yes, really) wherein he starts a Non Profit Organization to 'educate people' (his words) because "the only two viewpoints out there are 'Pave Everything!' and 'Blow it all up and live in mud huts!'" Instead, he views "bio-diversity on every roof and apartment patio."

Then, he wants his NPO to start a private school (the irony there is delicious in itself) 6 - 12 which offers exactly 1 graduation track (all focused on, you guessed it, ecology and 'biodiversity') "because private schools beat public schools because they can specialize, but public schools *have* to offer everything."

205 If you watch seventies-era sitcoms like 'One Day at a Time,' there was a huge push to destigmatize and normalize divorce; because that was the social left agenda at the time.

Now we know that easy divorce has had horrendous social consequences; broken families, economic dislocation, the rise of a one-parent underclass in perpetual poverty.

In current TV culture, there is an even stronger push to normalize gay marriage. The social consequences of this are unpredictable.

Like most bizarre little trolls, you miss the whole point of complementarity of "social conservative" issues and "fiscal conservative" issues. A country that consistently breaks its moral compass has to spend more and more money to pay for the Gods of the Copybook headings-esqueconsequences of that action. Please witness the breakdown of the inner-city African American city or the number of African American boys growing up without a father. That didn't happen because "so-cons" wanted it despite what your little mind will tell you. You had a breakdown of the moral structure in the community, coupled with and enhanced byJohnson's (*spit*) Great Society programs.

258 Will millennials buy homes?
Probably not. I got in just before the full kick of the Dodd-Frank rules, which pretty much make it impossible to buy a home under 35 now.

The problem is that the easy cheap money drove up home prices making downpayments unaffordable, so downpayments got lowered (mine was comparatively tiny.)
But Dodd-Frank just adjusted those up, the market is such a mess, it just made them unaffordable again.

Add to that that most people my age recognize that a home isn't the stabile investment people thought it was 20 years ago. We've wised up. (Indeed, the reason the wife and I bought a home had less to do with "equity" and more to do with "freedom to customize" that you don't get renting.)

Finally, Property tax. It's being jacked up to cover big government.

Of my Mortgage payment about $980 is interest and principle, another $320 is for my Property tax and insurance. (About $110 of that is insurance.) And that's after the appraised tax value plummeted last year. But they keep talking about jacking up our property taxes more to pay for bigger government. And I live in a fairly low taxed area here.

If you look at the entire state, including NYC and the expensive counties surrounding it, I guess a $500k average price is possible.

But it's a nonsensical number regardless. It doesn't reflect reality.

273 This just struck me...

Remember when Obama sent the bust of Churchill back to Britain? People were upset about it, but I don't remember anyone asking why he did it.

Churchill was a realist about Islam and that means he had nothing good to say about it.

I think Obama sent it back for that reason.

Anybody can say they're a Christian. A Christian friend told me that once.

Go to "Trulia" National Home Prices page, it gives a handy graphic that identifies price (by listing price or sale price or tax valuation, etc.) by just hovering over a County. My old County , Worcester, MA averages $229,000, my "new" County in NC is $139,000.

Well, see, it's the rum. When you can't sell your sugar to US because of high import tariffs, you convert your surplus sugar to rum. But the duck faced Puritans who don't want anyone to have any fun at all put an even higher tariff on Rum from the caribbean. That's why places like Haiti are so poor.

And the industrious entrepreneurs back in olden times saw a business opportunity to smuggle sugar and rum and avoid paying the import duties. Everyone wanted a bit of sugar in their tea. That is why we have some much trouble with drug smugglers today. We've been smuggling something in to the US for hundreds of years.

See?

380 Still raining steadily here. Tried to go do stuff. Didn't work. I'm back, for a moment.

Scanned the comments... The Horde always demonstrate the best of the fine art of troll tazing. The troll imitators are usually hilarious, too. Even the serious replies flay the flesh off its statements. Doesn't even matter that such abuse enables the troll's masochistic behavior (trolling for abuse) - it may be abusin' but it's still amusin'. (No-prize to anyone who can name the character whose line I'm paraphrasing.)

Still, there is a percentage of the conversation that gets hijacked - I mean, what otherwise might have been communicated is disrupted and lost. Some folks tune out; relatively too-many comments focus on the foulball one way or another, including mine. In that regard, troll's mission partly accomplished, alas.

Purely wishful thinking, but I wonder, what would it be like to have a combination of all commenters utterly starving the troll, accompanied by lightning banhammer and swift deletions of its "contributions" as they are dropped? Oh, right. It would be like threads when troll's not around.

Carry on.

Oh, this thread is superceded? Fine. I'll leave this here anyway.

In some limited cases yes. But as a rule no.
As a rule progressives want the state to enforce all of their values. That's the entire point of "social justice" - any "social justice" issue is just too important not to be enforced by the state. But of course, if progressive social values were so popular the state wouldn't have to enforce them...and it is a progressive social value that the state eliminate resistance to the righteous social justice cause.

There is, however, a conspicuous effort among so-cons to shame people for watching pornography and create and maintain a stigma therefrom, which has our little troll's knickers in a twist. How dare people not validate his lifestyle choices! They must want to make laws against it if they dislike it so much.

I find pornography distasteful in the extreme, probably as distasteful asthose who disagree with me on the matterfind my views on it.
