5 Good Morning Morons. Today is Thursday, May 28, 2015. On this day in 1937 The Golden Gate Bridge was officially opened for traffic. This is an amazing bridge to drive across and a little freaky on a motorcycle due to the winds gusting across it. It is even more amazing to sail under it on a ship.

LOL Kudos for GWTW quote

6 Do the Morons wonder why our fighter bombers can not seem to target the ISIS savages for more than a few measly strikes? Do the Morons remember LBJ micro-managing all the air strikes in Vietnam requiring him to approve all strikes before they can be made? Well those days are back and the pilots are pissed and the strikes are about as effective as they were in Vietnam. You can NOT micromanage military action from a desk in DC by a chair born SOB who has probably never seen action and COC who when he takes a crap goes out and wipes the area around a gopher hole.

7 E-mails show Scankles wanted to arm the Libyan rebels against Gaddafi despite it being against the rules in place at the time. And I suspect that she wound up doing it anyway and look at the mess we have over there now. Gadaffi was already pretty well contained and in a box.

8 The MFM is making a big deal out of the oil and tar globs washing up on Southern CA beaches. As we noted last week this has been going on before the Spanish even landed in CA. It is caused by oil seepage through the ocean floor off the beach. It could actually be reduced or even stopped if they erected oil platforms and drilled thereby reducing the pressure.

12 AP/Fox is making a big deal out of the Nebraska legislature overriding the governor's veto in a bill that would eliminate the death penalty in Nebraska. Oh a traditional conservative State has abolished the death penalty they say. No NE is not a conservative State. True they have been voting Republican in recent election, true they have two Republican Senators. But we have been running RINOs in the recent elections and both their Senators are RINOs as well. And eliminating the death penalty shows that their legislature is RINO packed as well.

20 Inholfe tells the EPA he will not allow their illegal land grab. I suggest he get the Senate to sue the EPA and ask for an immediate ruling by SCOTUS since this has already been adjudicated once. He need to stress that a political solution is not possible because the Democrats would block it and the lawless President would veto it. Of course SCOTUS could come back and say a solution is possible through impeachment, just pick it up off the floor. They have done that in the past too.

.
.This has really been bugging me. She is actively hiding from the press and everyone knows it, but why? They love her and wouldn't ask her any hard questions. I mean all they ever give her is puffball questions like; oh where ever did you get that lovely pantsuit, blah, etc.

One interviewer had her on the hook a couple of months ago and didn't follow up with a single question he asked, not one, so it's not like they are going to ask her anything difficult.

There has to be another angle I am missing, something else. She cant go through the entire campaign season avoiding the press, that will pi$$ them off.

61 Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes. Thanks for the news, Vic.

Here is a memo from Warner Brothers studio head Jack Warner. Is it real? I can't say. But it certainly seems like something he'd have dictated:

From: Jack L. Warner
To: Executive Staff

It's time I started thinking about the possibility of someone replacing me as the studio's head of production. I need your help. If there is any such qualified person presently working at the studio, I want him fired.

Bette Davis was a Warners star. Here she is in Fashions of 1934:

http://goo.gl/qkFxQi

How about another story?

Some of you might remember the actor Harry Carey, who began his career in Western silents, but became a memorable character actor late in life (his son, Carey Jr., was also a Western star). By 1936, however, his film appearances were few and far between and he was getting tired of the up-and-down nature of movie life. But, one day, opening the mail, he found an invitation to be a pallbearer at the funeral of MGM producer Irving Thalberg, one of the most powerful men in Hollywood, but a man whom Carey had never met.

Carey was nonplussed, but acted as a pallbearer anyway. And from that point on, his career went right back to the top. He never stopped working until his death in 1947. What he never knew, however, was that Thalberg's secretary had made a mistake. The invitation was actually supposed to have gone to Thalberg's closest friend, the screenwriter Carey Wilson.

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

87 >>Today is Thursday, May 28, 2015. On this day in 1937 The Golden Gate Bridge was officially opened for traffic.

I was there for the 50th anniversary celebration...which did not go as planned:

>>The bridge walk was the first event of the day, and it got off to a bad start. It was scheduled to begin at 6 in the morning, but the crowd that streamed up the bridge approaches through the trees of the Presidio decided on its own to begin the day at 5:30-- a half hour early.

The SF side went (I was in the first few hundred people and followed everyone else) and then when the Marin side saw, they went...and then gridlock.

We followed a marching band that was headed to the Marin side and got off the bridge pretty quickly. We were home hours before the flattening:

>>One expert paid for by celebration organizers predicted 80,000 people would show up. Instead, there were an estimated 800,000, with 300,000 packing the bridge at one time. Planned events were scuttled, porta-potties overflowed, chaos reigned and chilling before-and-after images showed up later, proving that the normally arched road had flattened under the weight of the pedestrians packed together like sardines.

Oops.

We suffered a bout of that about ten years back. Funny thing is, secret line in state tax laws: when the valuation goes back down, the tax doesn't! Wouldn't be "fair" to all those needy agencies.

I've long felt that tax revaluations should be subject to "claiming race" rules: if the county says your $180K house is suddenly worth $240K, you should be able to say OK, give me the $240K and it's yours. That'd keep the riff-raff out.

145 >>>Common sense supports the idea anyway, as states have the power to tax and as long as there's a dollar left out there in the citizenry they should try to meet their obligations. Has any state ever successfully disavowed its obligations?
.
.
.
.One problem is that States can no longer issue money. All they have is the power to tax in US dollars. Before and during the Revolutionary War all States could and did issue paper currency which allowed them to actually operate with a deficit for short periods of time. They cant do that now and are required by State constitution in most cases to have actual balanced budgets.

As someone pointed out upthread there is currently no mechanism to allow a State to go Bankrupt as they are a Sovereign tax authority within their own borders. In theory they could set their tax rate at up to 100% to cover their debts and future obligations, but that will never happen. It is an argument that has been used against States being allowed to declare bankruptcy though. Sort of it's a problem of their own making let them solve it.

Santorum really is a decent guy with generally good ideas on a whole range of issues. I'd bet he would have beat SCOAMF in '12.

NB: this is NOT an endorsement of him as my candidate this go-round. But I reiterate, we could do a hell of a lot worse than him. And I'd wager he'd be a good president.

152 All of you folks who are having problems with excessive tax assessment on your house should get up a petition to have the county pass a law that allows the home owner to challenge an assessment by having their own assessment done.

We have that law and guess what? Few challenges. You know why? The law forces them to think twice and normally they under value their assessments to prevent challenges.

For example my house is currently assessed at 65K for taxes. Its current value based on sales in the same neighborhood would be close to $200K.

157 The steady spattering of a mild rain on the oak tree is mesmerizing white noise. Interrupted by rumbly thunder. (As differentiated from crackling thunder, that especially sends doggy over to my side for reassuring pets.)

We needed more rain. The mosquitoes weren't thick enough already.

Last year, if we hadn't had the well, the cattle would have been in a bad way. Now, the ponds are full. Some of the lakes are closed to recreation, they're so full. The rivers are rushing.

It's just remotely possible the drought is relieved.

Probably but I have this odd feeling that he also thinks "we" are now eating and drinking things.
I used to have a cat that became terribly alarmed if I didn't get up at 0500 to go into the hospital. She would paw me and meow and the whole deal but this one just assumes that if I'm drinking coffee at any time day or night "we're" having snacks.

Thousands of years together and they are still telling us what to do. We never should have agreed to be their pets.

I've got one who will wake me up when the birds start up by clawing at my face and the blankets, but will be fine on his own if the bedroom door is shut and he's on the other side. The other one will sit quietly staring at the bed until I wake up (then I get a torrent of verbal abuse, but at least I got some sleep), but will scratch incessantly at closed doors if he's shut in or out (I wonder if he got trapped somewhere bad in his previous life).

For about a year, I was able to shut them both out without the scratching keeping me up all night by covering the bedroom door with foil (FOOOOYYYY-LLLLL)*, but last night someone figured out he could scratch a different door and yowl for his breakfast O_o Not sure what's next.

Do they honestly think she'll play well with independents? I keep thinking she can't avoid public speaking forever, and eventually the public at large will get a good feel for he and reject her, even with all the favorable coverage she'll get. Maybe I'm wrong, or they're hoping being the first woman president will pull in extra votes to compensate.

Giant zombie cougars with mutant diseases are taking over America! (srsly. Animal Planet.)

How I Met Your Mother reruns can now be seen 24-7 on one station or another

Televangelist Joseph Prince looks pretty creepy stalking the stage and yelling into that wireless mic thingy

Psychics! Totes for real Call Now!

Chris Hayes telling his 5 viewers about some soccer scandal, Fox with their daily marijuana-scare story, CNN also talking about some soccer scandal, but they do it with Brit accents.

Finally gave up and watched the ONLY show I can stand on early-morning TV. Thank you, King of the Hill.

That beach now has offshore drilling platforms and no tarballs. And instead of ratty shacks dotting the beach it has multimillion dollar homes. My brother and I slept on a screened porch on a pallet on the floor facing the beach. And we were hyper the whole week on vacation. Sunburned, skinny, and exhausted when we drove home.

In return, Barry will give 90 minutes of his speeches on DVD.

I mean, if all Obama wanted was a job to visit Miami, I think there were better options than President of the United States
