Anonymous Writer Asks NYT's "Ethicist" Columnist: A Rape Occurred In a Political Campaign I Was Involved With, and the Higher Ups Covered It Up; What Should I Do?

Via Twitchy.

My first job out of college was at a major political campaign. Late in the year, an intern told me she had been raped by one of my colleagues and that campaign higher-ups made the problem go away. I'm not sure what that means, but the police weren’t involved, nothing made the news, all the people involved kept their jobs. To my knowledge, this young woman told me and one other colleague. I kept the secret to myself for the last seven years until the other night. I let slip to a journalist friend the very basics of what happened, and now I’m being asked for contacts who can confirm that it happened.

...

The candidate I worked for is running again. I still support the candidate, and I do not want the opponent in office. On the other hand, I am aghast that the organization would cover up such a heinous crime.

Hmmm...

You know, not for nothin', but Hillary Clinton was still running for president 7 years ago, wasn't she?

37 Remember, a lot of rape accusations are not true. Also, if the young intern did not report it to the police it is her fault that nothing happened to the raper if it indeed occurred.

But, on the other hand, covering up bad shit in a Democrat political arena is as natural to them as breathing. Especially the Clintons who are as crooked as snakes and lower than their bellies in a wheel rut.

It is not your responsibility to report it if it is already 7 years old. However, if it had been within a few hours, or possibly a few hours, it is misprision of a felony to hide a felony. And that whoever covered it up is guilty of.

Of course, that assumes that a rapist has a conscience. There might be people in the campaign who have a sense of guilt and this might be an attempt to lure one or two out into the open to confess their sin and beg forgiveness.

82 @49. Because it is made up and about a Republican. I know, it doesn't say that. And like some Republican would write the NYT about it. But given that it would have to be a Democrat based on that, editors at NYT would never publish it.

Mickey Kaus told the tales about John Edwards after the fact. He said everyone knew but no one would say. He kept trying to hint it with "under news" in his column.

The point is that the press will ignore anything unseemly about Dems. So that means they are slow rolling a story here to get some Republican.

If she isn't willing to do that, what use is it for me to? I have no evidence at this point and am not an eyewitness. So it goes in the realm of 'story'.

Now, if this person wants to rat out the people who covered it up (supposedly) in the press or anonymously that would be a different story. It would still be unproven and possibly libelous...

I can easily buy that a campaign worker would keep quiet for years, though. You get true believers working at these places, the kind that would cover up a murder for their candidate. Eventually that zeal wears off and they start wondering if it was such a good idea.

From my reading of the "article" it doesn't preclude someone who has run for re-election between 08 and '16. The complainant(?) just claims to have worked for the campaign in '08, not that the candidate didn't run for re election in '10 or '12 or '14.

So it could be house member. I guess Senate wouldn't work (6 year intervals) unless there was some kind of special election going on in '08.

Which means nothing. If this was their "first job out of college," I doubt they were very high up on the ladder, which means I doubt they were privy council to the actual "major" candidate. In that situation, "campaign higher ups" could mean anyone from the candidate themselves down to the manager of a local campaign HQ. Much as I'd love to say "Hillary covered up a rape!"(and much as the Dems would love to say "(Insert Republican candidate here) covered up a rape!"), it's much more likely that it never even reached the candidate (plausible deniability, yo), and the closest it ever got was their campaign manager.

http://tinyurl.com/pbe2rd2

We have followed the performance of Marie Harf as a spokesman for the Obama administration foreign policy at the State Department. Harf gives the catastrophic foreign policy of the Obama administration a lighter than air, Valley Girl kind of feel. She is a walking self-parody. As such, she presents a novel use of expressive form.

Now comes word that Harf is being promoted to Senior Advisor for Strategic Communications to Secretary of State John Kerry. Like a helium filled balloon, Harf ascends. In her new position Harf will focus on negotiations between the U.S. and Iran on nuclear weapons. It sounds like a joke, but FOX News reports it as fact.

Yeah, that's how the media rolls.

"sexual assault" "non-consensual touching" "rape" "molestation" are all used depending on how they want to headline to read.

So if the Duggars were big Dem backers and the media was dragged to this story, the headline would have been "Duggar accused of non-consensual touching when he was in his early teens."

Instead they say "Duggar accused of incestuous child molestation".

That's just the way the media works.

So its a second-hand story, to boot?

Posted by: Pappy O'Daniel at May 27, 2015 01:09 PM (oVJmc)"

Oh, yeah. There are lots of issues with this story. The popularity of ex post facto withdrawal of consent means retroactive rape means that when the intern found out that a paid campaign worker is not actually a powerful or influential person, she might have had second thoughts about laying some nookie on him.

Or he might have bent her over the desk one night and had sex with her by force.

Or she might be as crazy as that woman at UVA and nothing happened at all.

In any event, the campaign decided that the thing to do was to make the problem go away. Maybe they paid her. Maybe they took her out to have a look at Adriana La Cerva's grave.

The point to remember is that Democrats are the New York Times' target demographic, not Republicans. It seems extremely unlikely that any Republican would be writing in to the New York Times "Ethics" column.

273 They knew this was out there. They knew there was a police report (initiated by an anonymous email to Oprahs show), why would they put their family through this by making themselves famous?

In theory the files are sealed at 18 and it takes a court order - which is not easy to get - to look into them. But I have zero respect for anyone in a reality show to begin with, no matter what their political or religious views.

I read the police report. not much there.

The incident that led to Josh being sent away for 3 months was when he touched his sisters thigh while the two of them were reading books to the younger kids. She ran out of the room and told her parents.

He then admitted to having impure thoughts and touching other sisters over their clothes while they slept (police report did not go in to detail). The other girls do not remember those incidents, as they were asleep.

So... a big nothingburger for the cops to act on. Plus statute of limitations had passed.

And the Duggars did, to their credit (?), contact a state trooper and have Josh get the shit scared out of him by the cop, who did not feel the need to even initiate a police report. (who, er, was later arrested for possession of child pornography FWIW)

A lot of people seem to have this glee at the idea of people who call themselves Christians messing up. But Christians are not perfect, they sin and they are perfectly aware of it. So I don't see something like this as hypocrisy so much as a mistake.

And I don't like them calling this 'molesting' when it was (apparently) more inappropriate touching, because those two things are very different.

But I don't watch the show and I probably wouldn't know who they even are except they live in Arkansas. So people gossip.

This is a lazy and pitiful attack on the entire Republican field of candidates.

Yeah, but we all know "sealed" records can become "unsealed" fairly easily if you're the wrong kind of person.

Obama unsealed divorce and child custody hearings of his opponents when running for IL state senate.

How? Who knows?

Also, the only reason this went public is because one of the victims went to court and asked for the police report to be destroyed. The judge agreed. The day before it was supposed to be destroyed, the local PD sent out a redacted (but obviously identifiable) version of the report based on an old FOIA request from a tabloid.

The church itself was about 100 years old, mostly wooden and had lovely architecture (it even had an altar rail, like pre-Vatican 2 Catholic churches). The pastrix was not only not a lesbian, but married and I think had one or two children. She was also feminine looking with shoulder-length hair, although she did not wear a lot of make-up, which seems proper given her vocation. While chatting with her at the reception, she seemed pretty traditional (with the obvious exception of her work, of course). The police report recommended no further action be taken, everyone involved was a minor, and the whole "protecting sexual assault victims anonymity" thing was at play too.

Nothing nefarious about one of the victims to want the report destroyed.

There is something nefarious about a judge ordering it destroyed, then the PD leaking it the day before it was to be destroyed.

Someone in the records department at the local PD clearly does not like the Duggars (or maybe just hates republicans or christians and sees the Duggars as representative of either group).

Anyways, I'm curious to see if the judge will go ape shit on the PD or not.

But by being honest about the whole situation (making the daughters available for interview based on an anonymous email to the oprah show), then allowing this police report to still exist, they shot themselves in the foot.

There's a lesson there.

There's also a lesson for any other family in a similar situation. Do not go to the police, lawyer up immediately if you are contacted by the police. Because anything in a police report, no matter how "sealed" is not private. Clearly. So yay to the PD for making it less likely that other victims will come forward in the future.

336 The Duggar thing gets my goat (back off Muhammid!).

There seems to be more focus on condemning him as a hypocrite than as a molester (which he may not have been either).

Look folks, the opposite of a hypocrite is not a saint. It is one who advocates the bad that he does, knowing it as bad and in spite of the damage it would do to anyone else who engages in it.

THAT is way more evil than hiding what you are ashamed of while speaking ill of the practice.

Ace, you are SO naive to think otherwise.

Huckabee, Santorum, and plenty of others ran in 2008 as well.

The charge will emerge publicly at some well-times moment, there will be a huge flurry of outrage, attempts will be made to smear ALL GOP candidates, a lot of analysis and essays will be written, the women's vote will be sewed up...

...and then...

...the entire incident will be revealed to have NO evidence backing it up, and will be as fake as the UVA or mattress-girl incidents.

But that will be too late. The damage will be done.

Obummer cruised into the convention the big winner while Slick Willy grumbled he ought to have been the coffee boy.

481 Or it may be just a new piece of the war on wymynz narrative, which would mean its probably fabricated and it's probably aimed at a prominent R (my guess would be huckabee, based on his defense of "molester" josh duggar) so that they can paint all R's with a "pro-rape culture" brush and spend hours and hours of TV time asking every R running for every office to comment on their thoughts on rape.

Posted by: mynewhandle at May 27, 2015 02:33 PM (AkOaV)

Trouble is that the 3 repub that meet the criteria of "running 7 years" ago Huckabee, Santorum and Perry have no chance what so ever of getting the nomination. So, an attack of this mature accomplishes nothing. None of the 3 will make it past the SC primary. So there is no "value" in an attack of this nature on the 3. Now Hillary on the other hand, this brings Billy Jeff into the conversation.

That would be simple demographics, the African American vote in that primary must be a huge percentage, probably a majority.

504 "Todd Akin lost and was running for Senate, but all of the prominent R's still got tied to him."

Let's remind ourselves here that various Christian social conservatives _actively urged Akin to stay in the race_, telling him that his faith was "being tested", and that an Akin victory was assured with God's helping hand.

This after anyone with even one functioning brain cell could see that Akin had become politically radioactive, had no hope at all of winning, and was inflicting enormous collateral damage on the rest of the GOP, including the top of the ticket.

I swear some of the socons must be long-term Democratic moles.

515 FAKE - if this was mentioned to a "journalist" friend, then the "journalist" should be able to put this together pretty easily

take the person who told you and back up their lives 7 years, see where they were and who they spent time with (social media was around, as well as any other number of records like where this person was employed etc), 7 years is not a normal term, so this person must have changed positions/elected office at some point . . . there is enough there, that a "journalist" should be able to put together some puzzle pieces and pursue this on their own

unless they are not able to punch their way out of a wet paper bag, which I imagine plenty of "journalists" are just lazy enough to find themselves in that position

I say this whole thing is FAKE for the "rape" angle and just drum up more proof that "the real victims are afraid to report it" so we can prop that one up more and more

Posted by: chelsea danger at May 27, 2015 02:58 PM (pBUj2)

516 Where is the evidence a rape actually occurred? I'm getting more and more cynical about rape claims as they collapse in heaps of lies and evasions.
