As for a kindle case -- I'm assuming you have a cheap one, I'd give it a shot. If it doesn't work, oh well.

My tablets are all in ruggedized (plastic with rubber edges) cases, so I can clean them with windex or whatever. Probably not the best for the rubber, but I usually upgrade devices long before the rubber becomes an issue.

I've just found that men are more comfortable in men-dominated office spaces -- or at least seem less like a human resources rep worried about "offending" people.

My company had us watch a video wherein we were informed that holding a door for a woman is sexist. My (female) boss said, "I consider not holding a door for me to be sexist. Choose wisely."

Which was hilarious. But I don't think she would have felt comfortable saying that in an office full of women.

My secretary used to joke that I needed a shrink's couch in my office. What a nightmare. The best part: they were both hired by my boss's wife to increase the distaff contingent in research, and when she couldn't handle the mess she'd made, my boss asked me to field the train wreck as a personal favor to him. The more drugs we make over the counter, the better, frankly.

People who abuse drugs find a way to abuse them either way. It's just normal people who are wildly inconvenienced by having to go to a doctor, get a referral to a specialist, go to that doctor, get a script, call it in to the pharmacy, then go pick it up. For something basic like birth control pills or mild anti biotics, or whatever.

I understand them keeping the opiate pain pills under lock and key, but a lot of the stuff "behind the counter" really doesn't have to be. Just seems like a way to drive up health care costs.

I figured that making drugs OTC benefitted the health insurance co's because then they wouldn't have to include them in there prescription drug coverage plans. And I'm OK with that for stuff like allergy meds, the pill, etc. I'd rather they focus on the more expensive stuff like blockbuster drugs (i.e. no generic available yet) and pain meds.

I think many times that's true, but there are legitimate reasons to do that with other drugs. Antibiotics, for example, which would be abused like crazy for every sniffle, which in turn would give rise to bacterial resistance. We already have a serious bacterial resistance problem, with some strains of some species susceptible now to a single drug. If they develop resistance to that drug, we're in deep sewage.

My girlfriend was briefly unemployed and tried to sign up for health insurance on the govt webpage (the state we lived in at the time had their own exchange).

Guess what? It wouldn't let her sign up for health insurance. It redirected her to sign up for Medicaid. Since she said she was unemployed. My formerly liberal wife got in a big argument with her still-very-liberal mother over the whole thing. The liberal argument seemed to be something along the lines of "well it's not like they live on the government. They've never done it before!" and "Oh, so we're all paying for it? Should we do the math and see how much each tax payer is paying for this pregnancy". Because Americans essentially pay all the costs of RD to commercialize a drug, and have to do so within the ca. five years typically left on patent life before the drug becomes generic. This is why pharma companies fight over the American market first and foremost.

All other countries free ride on sick Americans by buying drugs on a cost plus basis through their national health services. You don't like how much they pay? Tough. If necessary, they'll rescind patent coverage in their country and open the doors to all comers. India has done this more than once.

Well, the real answer is "ISIS is the outgrowth of an ideology that has a long history in Islam, whose recent resurgence can be blamed on the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, the rise and subsequent squashing by pan-Arab governments of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood (sayyid qutb), the power vacuums exposed in the ME by the "arab spring" which overthrew strong arm dictators and replaced them with strong arm religious warlords, and regional instability which has existed for thousands of years."

But that's not a cute soundbite.

"Hawkish foreign policy created the opening for ISIS."

Media cheers. Yay! A smart, mavericky Republican willing to cross the aisle!

follow up:

"You know, Hillary is a hawk. She voted to invade Iraq, here are some quotes of hers from 2002. None of us on the R side up on the stage in the presidential debates voted to invade Iraq...

Also, let's talk about Libya."

Felt good to pass it on, though. Said crappy boss left shortly after I did, at least I left voluntarily.

Chicken shit = raw materials for potassium nitrate and therefore, black powder

Posted by: IllTemperedCur at May 27, 2015 11:25 AM (ba0Bt)"

Well, sort of. Bacteria transform the nitrogenous waste into nitrates. Back in the good old days, King James of England used to license "petermen" to gather saltpeter or potassium nitrate from where it could be found. The ground under chicken coops and dovecotes was a particularly good spot. Floors of barns were good as well. Any place where birds shit or mammals pee and where the rain does not wash away the nitrate is a god location.

The process is to dig up the dirt containing the nitrates and put it into a barrel with holes in the bottom or a burlap sack and pouring water on it to leech out the nitrates. Ultimately the liquid is gathered into a cauldron and mixed with wood ash or potash as a source of potassium. The cauldron is then heated up and the water is boiled off. The white crystals left are potassium nitrate.

The digging up of floors was very disruptive and although the petermen were supposed to restore things, they were not all that good about it. People often paid bribes to the petermen in order to to have them not dig up the floors and go bother somebody else. One fact that I thought was particularly interesting was that the petermen used to dig up the dirt floors of churches. It seems that sermons went on for hours and women were pretty much always pregnant. Women generally did not wear underpants and they would just spread out their skirts and pee on the floor. That is one of the aspects of life in the 17th century that the Three Musketeer movies seem to neglect.

273 The donwside of the super low rates is car prices are higher. If you can get 1% or 2% interest, you can afford more car. If everyone car afford more car, all cars become more expensive.

So you save $50 a month on a payment over 60 months, but the cost of the car is $3000 more.

Same thing with housing. Lower rates = higher prices. In the end you don't really save anything.

99.9% of all new cars severely depreciate the first few years. Some depreciate more than others, but they all depreciate a lot. Toyotas which hold their values well relatively speaking still lose about 40% of MSRP in the first 3 years. And you can see excatly the loss based on lease residual values. Toyotas and Hondars are about 60% of MSRP after 3 years, Ford and GMs are about 50%.

Yes, thats true of course.

Which is why it's important not to fall in to the car salesman trap of "so, what do you want your monthly payments to be?" because they will structure it to be that amount, even if it ends up being a $30k loan over 6 years at 7% interest.

More important to agree on a price, then figure out the financing afterwards. And never reveal your hand (how much you can afford / want to pay monthly)

Rhomboid, I know this was sarc on your part, but I use it too. When the leftists say that Iraq was a war of choice, I point out to them that so was Germany. Japan attacked us at Pearl Harbor, not the Germans. Roosevelt tried his best to provoke an incident with Germany (e.g., establishment of the Pan-American Security Zone, occupation of Iceland), but the Germans never took the bait (they did sink one ship off Sierra Leone after letting the crew get in a lifeboat). Yet, the Allied strategy was "Germany First."
Admittedly, Germany (and Italy) did declare war on us in solidarity with Japan right after Pearl Harbor. But you could say the same for Saddam Hussein and his myriad firings on American aircraft patrolling the no-fly zone, along with multiple other Gulf War armistice violations.
