Quote of the Day I - A Fella Could Have a Pretty Good Weekend in Vegas With All This Stuff Edition

An upcoming workshop scheduled to take place at the University of Wisconsin-Madison aims to teach campus radicals and socialists how to manipulate campus resources to advance their agenda. One of the group's overall goals, according to their website, is to "reveal and challenge the North American university as a site working at the junction of settler-colonialism, neoliberal capitalism, hetero-patriarchy, white supremacy and other systems of domination and exploitation." The event includes sessions investigating what it means to be a thief, how to construct political narratives, and how to destabilise hegemonic spatial representations.
Being expected to pay your bills as agreed - say, those misspent student loans - is, we learn, a "means of oppression." Because destabilising hegemonic spatial representations is something that someone else should be forced to pay for.

-- David Thompson

Quote of the Day II

"The line between free speech and X" is often the rhetorical equivalent to "the line between vegetables and rutabagas": the author doesn't have a coherent argument that rutabagas aren't vegetables, but doesn't like rutabagas and thinks you shouldn't either.

-- Popehat

Robert Tracinski: Why is the Angry Left So Angry?

In short: immanentizing the eschaton.

For the secular leftist, the end state is social and necessarily political. It is all about getting everybody else on board and herding them into his imagined utopia. There are so many "problematic" aspects of life that need to be reengineered, so many vast social systems that need to be overthrown and replaced. But the rest of us are all screwing it up, all the time, through our greed, our denial, our apathy, our refusal to listen to him banging on about his tired socialist ideology.

For the Christian, the ideal end state is safely in the next world and therefore is never in doubt. For the individualist, it's in his own life, and it's mostly under his direct control. For the leftist, however, it is all outside his control. It requires other people, a lot of other people, and those SOBs usually refuse to cooperate. Talk about rage-inducing.

If the whole focus of your life is on getting everybody else to agree with you on every detail of your politics and adopt your plans for a perfect society, then you're setting yourself up to be at war with most of the human race most of the time.

Which means an awful lot for the Angry Left to get angry about.

Honoring the Amazing Life of Corporal Tibor 'Ted' Rubin

Almost certainly he's the only human being ever to survive both a Nazi concentration camp and a North Korean POW camp and to eventually be awarded the Medal of Honor. There's an amazing movie in his life story  - if only Hollywood was willing to make it.

He was born in Hungary in 1929, and at age 15 was sent to Mauthausen concentration camp in Austria. His first day there an SS captain told the assembled, "None of you will get out of here alive." Ted turned to the man next to him and said, "Nice fellow." Ted survived the next 14 brutal months of captivity, but most of his family perished. His father died in Buchenwald. His ten-year-old sister Elonja was sent to the gas chambers at Auschwitz, and his mother Rosa, who was slated for forced labor, chose instead to face death with her daughter. Mauthausen was liberated by the U.S. 11th Armored Division on May 5, 1945. With nothing left for him in Hungary Ted emigrated to the United States. He promised himself that he would show his appreciation to the country that gave him his freedom, and saved his life.

Ted joined the Army in February 1950, and five months later landed in Korea with the 3rd battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, one of the first American units sent to help repel North Korean invasion forces. Ted was soon involved in the fighting withdrawal to the Pusan perimeter. In one engagement near Chirye, Ted's company was redeploying from one hill to another, and he volunteered to stay behind to keep the enemy guessing until the movement was completed. As Corporal Leonard Hamm relates, "the North Koreans, thinking the hill was still occupied by a whole company, made an all out offensive with all their available troops. PFC Tibor Rubin had stocked each foxhole with grenades, and during the attack the following morning made his way running from foxhole to foxhole, lobbing, one after the other, grenades down upon the enemy, he became almost hysterical in his actions but he held the hill."

For this and other actions, Ted's immediate superiors recommended him for the Medal of Honor. However, before the paperwork could be processed these officers were killed, and a sergeant who might have sent the papers up refused to do so because Ted was Jewish. "Not on my watch," he said. After the Inchon invasion, the 8th Cavalry Regiment moved north towards the Chinese border, and was at the forward edge of the U.N. offensive when the Chinese Red Army entered the conflict. Ted's battalion was destroyed at the Battle of Unsan in early November 1950, while fighting a delaying action against Chinese forces swarming south from the Yalu. Hundreds of Americans were captured, among them Ted, who had manned a machine gun to hold off the enemy as the rest of the unit attempted to withdraw.

And then his life got really interesting.

The Horrible, Bad, Bad Racism of Serving Mexican Food at a Sci-Fi Event

You can see why this is problematic right? No? Then try relaxing your mind, working outside the logic box, and coming up with the most racist thoughts that those other bad people must have in their heads. Ok see it now?

Yes, it's ludicrous and pernicious, and not at all accidental. Dr Golz and her peers are in effect saying to students, "You should want to be the guy who bitches about the alleged racist subtext of party snacks. And if you do choose to behave that way, we'll reward you and flatter you and make you feel important, while making other people jump through clown hoops to appease the feelings you pretend to have." And the more implausible and contrived the claim of victimhood is, the more status points accrue, supposedly on account of the complainant's heightened sensitivity and mental prowess. He has fathomed an injustice mere mortals cannot see.

And bewildered onlookers are expected to pretend that this is a high and noble function of an academic institution.

New ONT Feature - The ISIS View: Slave-Girls or Prostitutes?

By Umm Sumayyah Al-Muhajirah, ISIS magazine columnist. [No this is not satire silly kuffir.]

Saby (taking slaves through war) is a great prophetic Sunnah containing many divine wisdoms and religious benefits, regardless of whether or not the people are aware of this. The Sirah is a witness to our Prophet's (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) raiding of the kuffar. He would kill their men and enslave their children and women. The raids of the beloved Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) convey this to us....

The scholars of Sirah mentioned that the Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) took four slave-girls as concubines, two of them being Mariyah al-Qibtiyyah and Rayhanah an-Nadriyyah [Zad al-Ma'ad].

...Yes, Allah has opened the lands for His awliya', so they entered and dispersed within the lands, killing the fighters of the kuffar, capturing their women, and enslaving their children.

I write this while the letters drip of pride.

Yes, O religions of kufr altogether, we have indeed raided and captured the kafirah women, and drove them like sheep by the edge of the sword. And glory belongs to Allah, to His Messenger, and the believers, but the hypocrites do not know!

But then he had to go there.

And who knows, maybe Michelle Obama's price won't even exceed a third of a dinar, and a third of a dinar is too much for her!

Millionaire Dot-Com Adulteress Says Women Too Weak to Negotiate Salaries

Ellen Pao, interim chief executive of Reddit, announced last month a ban on salary negotiations at the social media company. Her stated goal: to eliminate the persistent disadvantage that women have at the bargaining table.

..."Men negotiate harder than women do and sometimes women get penalized when they do negotiate," Pao said. "So as part of our recruiting process we don't negotiate with candidates. We come up with an offer that we think is fair."

According to Feminists women are akin to mentally challenged children who must be protected and coddled from a harsh patriarchal world, and also Sisterhood is Powerful - well unless she happens to dig your husband.

Two exit questions:

1) Do you think Ellen Pao tried to negotiate her salary before taking the job at Reddit?  Or do you think she said, "I am a girl.  I must obey and accept whatever is offered" without asking for more?

2) Given her history, do you think the Reddit's board of directors should try to keep her away from male employees who are married?

The Joy of Dishwasher Cooking

If it was good enough for ole Vincent P., it works for me.

On November 21, 1975, horror movie icon Vincent Price appeared on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and proceeded to horrify the audience with his strange and abhorrent behavior. He cooked salmon in a dishwasher.

Price was a gourmet cook, which is another story entirely. The real takeaway here is that he may have pioneered-or at least popularized-the art of dishwasher cuisine, using the appliance's steam-filled enclosure to poach food in a manner MacGyver would envy.

26 Kinda bummed. Hadn't been planning on moving, but about 2 weeks ago I came across what should have been a sweetheart of a deal on a house- nice sized, sitting on 30 wooded acres with a separate 5 car garage and a lovely pool and hot tub area. The place needed rehab- mostly because of the horrible late 80s Miami Vice decor and the fact that it had been sitting since last year as the foreclosure worked its way through. Walked the property with a specialist and came up with a rehab budget of 80-100k. Put in a bid last Wednesday, and found out today that the bank took a different offer.

Easy come, easy go, and I hadn't been looking to move but...damnit, I'm disappointed. My mind was already picturing what I'd do to fix it up, and it would have been a lovely country estate when I was finished. I'd have lived there for the rest of my life most likely.

Darn.

I don't know how it worked in the rest of the country, but here in the SF Bay Area, the "Occupy" movement flamed out pretty quick once the local street criminal population realized that, hey, we've got a bunch of stoned college students who are carrying the latest iPhones and MacBooks, with the cops being kept at a distant remove.

80 Weirddave -

Had the exact same thing happen to me many years ago. Another house on the street that I live on became available and I loved it. But it was sold before I could even make an offer. I actually shed tears and couldn't figure out why I was that upset.

I'm writing this from the living room of that house. Because less than a year later it came on the market again. And I haven't let go of it since then.

Something will work out. You'll either find something even better or this house will become available.

256 so my house is undergoing renovation, and there are some holes in the floor to the crawlspace, and some nasty bugs here in japan.

There are also blue tailed skinks, and they are my friends since they eat nasty bugs.

Last week one got into the main room, wich is mostly finished but one wall is taped up paper as I put in new earth quake cross bracing.

I knew there was some kind of bug since one day I saw something out of the corner of my eye behind a wire shelf, but i put it out of my mind. I knew it could not be those damn jumping spider monsters since they are the only bugs I have ever seen that attack humans. If it was one of them it would have jumped at me.

well, two nights ago i woke up with a blue tailed skink on my fucking arm!!!!!!!

I, of course did not know this. I plucked something large off my arm, jumped up, turned on the light, and searched through the beanbag and pillows i had fallen asleep on. I saw something crumpled up, and it looked like a giant millipede. maybe 6" long, and black, and crumpled. I ran and got the shop vac, and sucked it up, and put tape over the hose to make sure it would not get out.

well this morning a skink was stuck to the tape, at the end of the hose, but open. my guess is it was a skink all along since a giant millipede would have felt hard and would not have froze when i grabbed it. and I have never seen 6" millipedes here in Japan (3" centipedes. 2" silverfish, 3" jumping spider monsters, but no 6" millipedes.

I let let the skink free out back, with most of his skin intact but a little bit stuck to the dollar shop duct tape. skinks are my friends.

300 In case anyone hasn't heard.....my email situation is precarious at the moment, due largely to the persistence of POP3 connections. POP3 connections allow for the "you've got mail!" thingies when you're not actually in your email program......and frequently survive a password reset -- so someone could be connected to your account with POP3 and still read and delete your emails even after you've reset the password on your account.

When you send an email, your program logs into SMTP to fling your message on its way. Each time. So you can be forcibly booted from your email account and not even know until you try to SEND a message from it. I learned a key data point when I'd been going "ping" "ping" "ping" from email A to email B, but then couldn't go "pong" from email B to email A.

Please use EXTREME caution in either sending emails to me or reading emails from me, under any email account.

It sounds counterintuitive, but try cutting back and washing it only when you really have to. Leave it as long as you can. Use a scalp massager in the meantime. Just rinse it instead of using soap, if you have to. Give your scalp time to recover and reassess. If that doesn't work you can then rule out oversoaping.

371 They key is portability and concealability. A 4" barreled .44 ( like a Smith model 29 or 626 )with a good BufBor load has enough oomph to kill a griz (so I've heard from a distant relative or something like that) without being 'too much', like .454 C, .460, or .500 can be in a giant hand-cannon. Not everyone can handle those calibers in a pistol, especially older folks with bad wrists and arthritis.

I shot a Puma .454 lever action rifle years ago, and always kicked myself for not buying it as you can shoot .45 Colt in it as well. At the time I bought a Marlin .45-70 instead, a Limited Edition with the full length 7-round tube mag and a octagonal barrel... and the rifle kicks like a really, really pissed-off angry kicky thingamajig with hot BufBor loads. Pretty rifle, but I wouldn't want to try and smuggle it past the green-clad Park Nazis if I want to wander God's Country. So the Smith .44 goes into the pack.

Leave Vegas Thursday for Reno to bowl the National Mixed Tournament on Friday/Saturday with a couple of friends that we've bowled with for years. Wife is taking eight teams to the Women's National Tournament so we're there until Tuesday when we leave for Denver. We get home on Thursday, get to do laundry and then leave for the Open Tournament in El Paso.
We arrive on El Paso on Monday and have an hour on the tournament practice lanes. Bowl Tuesday and Wednesday, then on Thursday I bowl the two side tournaments, the Bowlers Journal scratch tournament and the Forty Frame game. Leave Friday for Denver and I want to stop in Alamogordo and maybe Roswell.
Back in Denver by that Sunday. I will not want to bowl again until maybe August.

410 I think if spiders had little neck signs ("Hello! I am a SPIDER") they'd be given a lot more respect and lot less squashing.

Like sharks, they can't help how they look. And like sharks, they're not evil, not in the way that moslems can be. They just have that triggering look.

Decades ago, my friends and I were playing in the back yard and this huge bulldog emerged from the woods. Classic type, fangs from the bottom lip, scary as hell. We all scattered.

Minutes later, I saw that he was still out there. So I ventured out, came close and petted him. Lots of wagging from the tail area (no actual tail of course) and the guy seemed so happy to have a bit of affection. I learned a lot then--scary looks don't necessarily mean scary attitude (in animals. Not true for moslems). Still haven't petted any spiders, but gained a bit of respect for how God (or Nature) designs things.

We made some decent progress today. Today was safer than yesterday; tomorrow will be safer than today. It is literally going to take months and thousands of dollars to deal with this in a responsible way -- to say nothing of billable time. And there WILL be some changes in corporate policy, much as the bureaucracy would rather things stay the same.

I know that the head of Intuit security was VERY interested to find out that I'd had four telephone calls from tech support after I'd laid out my concerns to him across a table and he'd personally assured me they were baseless. I know this 'cause I talked with him -- he provided the lookup for the caller ID.
And, once again.....there's an opportunity -- the drives will be imaged. If the malefactor would 'fess up with every single piece of the malware involved, we can correct for that and move forward......leaving the imaged drives as backup if things go astray. That's going to happen and will cost (haven't got the estimates yet) about $1000 per suspected drive. Or I can have them imaged and cleaned at about $3500 per drive. Whoever did this to me could make things better for themselves by coming forward ASAP to fully state what had been done.

Since I have no 100% guaranteed uncompromised emails, send details to ace....I'll be around to pick 'em up shortly.

1) Malignant narcissism and always being correct and effete and knowing everything about everything and global warming you motards.

If you're not mad, you aren't paying attention!

However, the right is mad about certain things which can be controlled, but have gone awry lately; the left is mad about pretty much everything, including human nature and the planetary climate centuries from now.

Accountant. Hate to waste money.....and I likely even complemented their nic. If I can do an image for $1000 instead of $3500, I'd hate to blow the extra $2500 if it wasn't necessary. So I'm hoping he'll come forth, confess all, and limit the amount paid to specialists.....'cause big checks are about to be written. The Intuit security guy is going to put me in contact with the guy who did data recovery from that drive that re-entered on the doomed shuttle and was found in a field. He knows drives.

But I've got to say my buddy's got the Gift of Love -- I have a heartfelt discussion with Security at Intuit and later tell him about four follow-up calls from tech support; I interact with top levels at AOL and he says things are put to bed over the weekend....only to find the 5/23 ONT @30.....my buddy is doin' more to motivate folks than I could ever do.

There is one of those "Laws" named after some science fiction writer that I am too lazy to look up that says "90% of everything is crap". This is in response to somebody who was complaining that 90% of science fiction is crap.

The reason that there is so much good stuff from the past is because people usually only preserve the good stuff and the crap from the past tends to be forgotten. I suppose that this could be taken as an argument for conservatism. Many generations have produced a lot of stuff and it is worthwhile to keep the best of what they created.

Progressives, of course, believe that they are so smart and well intentioned that they can do better than everybody who has ever lived. And we can see from the domestic and foreign policy results of our progressive President how well that generally works out.

There is a part in the movie "Goodfellas" where Henry Hill is talking about what it means to be a Made Man, a full member of the Mafia. Part of the package is "You can fuck with other people but nobody can fuck with you."

That seems like the essence of supremacism. It is also worth considering that the Mafia originated in Sicily and that Sicily had been conquered and controlled by Muslims for centuries. In some ways, it seems like the Mafia is Islam without the religious aspects but keeping the violence, supremacism and the right to tax the kufirs.
