Not So Good News: The Taliban Is Still Killing American Soldiers in Afghanistan

Actually, this is an example of a politician endlessly re-declaring the same thing to get more free media out of it. Obama declared the end of War in Afghanistan last December.

The enemy, Jim Geraghty notes, was unimpressed.

A 22-year-old member of the US Army from Whitinsville was killed in Afghanistan when an Afghan soldier attacked his American allies earlier this week.
John M. Dawson, an Army specialist, died in Jalalabad from wounds suffered when he was hit by small arms fire while on an escort mission, the Defense Department said in a statement.

That story is from April 10, 2015. Wow, that's practically as ancient history as World War II.

Mission Accomplished?

Robert Tracynski notes the Passive Voice President says these wars "came to an end" -- certainly not that America won these wars.

There are good men who gave their lives, or left behind an arm or a leg, to keep Islamic terrorists from establishing a home base in Iraq. Having achieved that victory, they then had to watch as it was all thrown away....
[W]hatever this administration's role, it is disturbing to see the president touting the peace that we are supposedly enjoying after the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have "come to an end." That’s an appropriately passive expression, since President Obama can't say that we’ve won those wars, only that they have "come to an end"--and only for us. I should also add: and only for now.

Worth recalling here that during his top-billed foreign policy speech in Berlin in 2008, Obama described the Cold War in essentially the identical way.

The delighted Europeans slobbered all over him. That's when the wheels got turning on the Nobel Peace Prize which Obama would be awarded early the next year, after only enough time in the presidency to have located the Oval Office washroom.

Funny thing, though: the Euros are no longer all that happy with Obama. They are visibly flustered and disconcerted that the great peacemaker seems to have left only wreckage in his wake, and two new wars starting for each old war that he has withdrawn from.

Normal? What's normal? Many people in the Reserves do one weekend a month and then 2 weeks a year Active Duty. But that is not across the Board. He could have either been tagged for a longer call up or volunteered for one. I do about 30 days Active Duty each year and another 60 days in Uniform for other Reserve Duty. It can depend on what your job is and how dedicated you are or how desperate you are to stay in. Your Rank can also have something to do with it. But yeah ask to see his Orders

yeah that's the usual. Since I am a DR and they kinda need me I tend to do more Active Duty than most, but that is mostly voluntary.

208 For example Reserve Duty in the USA is usually 13 Days for Navy Reserve.

Sometimes to go over seas it will be longer because of Travel and to make it worth the Military's expense in sending you it may be 3 - 6 weeks.

I'm going to Okinawa and it is 16 days.

Well I am in the Navy first of all, so NG Orders will look different anyway. Yes be careful, or Userra will get on you. But you are allowed to check if all id kosher so to speak

219 Goldman - As a guy who spent 25+ year Active and Reserve, no this is not normal. Ask to see a copy of his orders. They are generally cut weeks in advance, especially for NG unit "summer camp."
